Your story is very familiar. My husband had a brain tumor at age 37. While benign, the Schwann cell tumor was large and first damaged the auditory nerve. He was misdiagnosis in his twenties with hearing loss w/o further xrays or scans. The side his face went numb one day that lead to the dx. 12 hour surgery. After he has the paralysis, 100% hearing loss in one ear, 80% in the other, and the issues with his eye. Swallowing and eating were issues. The nerve grafting was successful and made a big difference. He had a long recovery but he is now 64 and has lead a pretty normal life. Thinking of you and your family through your journey to recovery. It can be very scary and isolating. Sharing your story will help others.

We have the same case, im 38 years old now 2x operated year 2013 (March & August) i have a brain shunt too since then
And yeah, its a long recovery.. . All you said are true.. .
In my case i loss my right eye sight & right ear Profound deaf
That problem with depth perception took me a lot of time so i really have to take everything slow
Its hard, because not everyone will understand what your going to even your own family
You have to be strong enough to go on alone

Thank you. I’m happy to hear it worked for him. I just had a Sural nerve transfer to create a cross facial nerve graft, cranial nerve “5 to 7 transfer” with parotidectomy. I am not happy your husband went through it but I am grateful to hear your story knowing someone else has successfully moved through it. My grafting was this past Tuesday 8/6 a 10 hour surgery and as you mentioned more long recovery and rehab down the road. Yes it has been scary & isolating, lots of unknowns and not a lot of knowledge out there unless you search for it.

Honestly, in my experience, women especially do not want to acknowledge the stress and anxiety around health issues for fear of misdiagnosis. Often we are told symptoms are due to stress or anxiety rather than the physician working towards a true cause. So, by the time a diagnosis is made, we still don’t want to acknowledge those things because it was what lead to being gaslighted by the medical community.

Being a nurse no doubt steadied your approach to treatment. For a benign tumor to make such an impact, it is impressive that the sense of being overwhelmed you are experiencing is so well managed in the presentation of your own story. Nerves of steel balanced by a sense of humor and a curative sense of curiosity for your own recovery! Patient advocacy within surgical intervention must be in your future!

I just had something similar but different removed a month ago. It was a vestibular schwannoma, aka acoustic neuroma. The first sign was early last year, when I noticed changes in my left side hearing. After it got worse, I had a brain MRI in October, in which it was discovered. Another MRI in April revealed that it was growing fast, and it had to go, or it would press against my cerebellum and brain stem. The end of June they used the retrosigmoid approach and made a hole behind my left ear and took it out, and they got it all. The surgeon had warned me that the chances of saving my left side hearing were small, and sure enough, the hearing nerve was withered to almost nothing and couldn't be saved. The balance nerve had long since withered away, and I had already learned to compensate, so balance issues are minimal now, bc I already had dealt with that. My facial nerve is not functioning fully right now, but early indications coming out of anesthesia were good; it was normal then. What is now in play is swelling, and it could take half a year to recover, but the chances are good that it will. That is important to me, bc I play oboe professionally. That is the scariest part, and I have suffered some anxiety through this.
I must acknowledge that so far, I have had it easier than you have. My heart truly goes out to you, and I wish you the very best as you continue to recover.

My understanding is that contrast MRI has gadolinium toxicity. Maybe makes symptoms worse or creates new problems. Diagnosing for mental problems around this furthers prescribing drugs, profiting pharma. Chemo also part of the Iatrogenic pipeline. God bless you. Prayers to you for continued healing.

Thank God I no longer have Lyme Disease anymore. It was diagnosed weeks after the tick bite. Lyme is curable if caught early. Otherwise you manage it. My Lyme was completely cured. If you have headaches, it is a Lyme symptom. Get a blood test. You then get a brain scan if it’s not Lyme. My advice is don’t ignore headaches. My headaches turned out to be weather related. Take ibuprofen with Sudafed for weather headaches. I hope this helps. A side note: this lady has a droopy side of her face. Don’t know why but check yourself for a stroke if you have that. I think hers is a side effect of a medicine. Praying for her.
