I want to thank you again, Mr. David Mbugua, for your time and effort in making these explanatory videos of subtitle edit, they are very didactic and well elaborated.
I also want to thank the developers of this wonderful free, open source tool who put a lot of effort and generosity into it for all of us to use.
Unfortunately I have to say that the transcription tool is still not very reliable, at least what I humbly tested.
I wanted to transcribe a video in English of approximately 40 minutes into Spanish.
And the transcription is still not good, but let's hope that in future updates all this will improve.
Subtitle version used edit 3.6.12 .

i was having the same issue, it's insane, you would think by this point ai would have made it more accesible but no, what we got instead is a thousand different site, all wanting you to pay 100 dolars for a subcription....i just plain cannot afford that and have to do work
I've been wanting this feature for years as I love watching foreign-language movies. I can understand German well, Dutch is okay, my French, though, is minimal, and as for Russian, forget it! But Subtitle Edit now allows me to generate subtitles, which I can translate to English either within SE or by using Google Translate. I never bind subtitles in a movie; I always use a .srt file. This really is fantastic software and I will be making a donation.

Nice video david! Do you know how one would use this to create word-by-word highlighted captions? Perhaps with the word that is being spoken as a different color (like green) from the normal text (white)? Do you know how you might stroke that font?

This portable version doesnt offer an FFmeg download like the non portable version. What m I doing wrong ? Where am I supposed to get that from ?
Have you tried navigating to Options > Settings and Waveform/Spectrogram?
Download FFmpeg should be available.

Thank you this helped me a lot with my own videos I make. For some reason the timecode in Premiere Pro was not in sync with the movie when it played in Vlc so my own manually made sub file was a little out of sync. When I used this software, it made everything right. Thanks for the guide which allowed me to learn this software.

hello maskednil. I ask you to help me, because mr.mbunga does not answer everyone, I do not know why he does not help me. so here it is: I have 2 problems with the subtitle edit. for the audio to tex, I only succeed with the French language and the English. even with version 3.6.11 with update and the large Vosk model of the Hindu language I do not I can't have the subtitle. But the audio to tex for the French language works with all the SE. I need the audio to tex for the Hindu and Arabic languages. And my second problem, I can never open the subtitle of a video. yes I slip the video into the white square, as shown by mr.mbunga, but for me it does not work. as you see I have asked several mr.mbunga for help, but he does not never answered me. @@danibanair2768 I'm sorry I only use the software as per David's guide and only English which is ok for me. I never tried other language. If you want to open subtitle you must generate audio-to-text like in his video. You can use the folder icon at the top left to open existing subtitle .srt file and change anything.

Hi David nice video. I have the SE 365 version and extract the subtitles from the movie, to record it included in the movie. In the Video/generate video with embedded subtitles menu, I have already set the font size from 38 to 47 in "Video/Generate video with embedded subtitles" , and in the "options" / video player menu I have already set the size of the letter in 24, but the subtitle inserted in the recorded video, is always small. where can I in the SE365 put the subtitles to be recorded in larger size. ( my LG-TV plays movies with separate subtitles I don't have options, to increase the lyrics. on tv. thanks

This is truly life saving, thank you! If you can spare a moment, I want to be able to go to next and previous subtitle and play/pause video while typing. I set my preferred shortcuts for "go to next/previous" and "play/pause", but I have to click on the waveform so as to be able to use shortcuts. Do you have any idea of why this might be happening?

Thank you David, you videos are excellent! I wanted to ask if it is possible to save the new file as something other than the original name? I am very new to the Subtitle world and understand that the software will save the new subtitled file as the original name, is this right?

Hi I have this problem when I saved a new file in Subtitle Edit using a different guiding format then trying to open a different file in subtitle edit, the newly open file kinda follows the previous saved format of the previous file. It's pretty hard to understand from my writing but I hope you can help. It's always like that. Can you help me with this? thank you

If i do as u showed on this video, the translated subtitle have a str (subrip) format instead ass (Advanced Sub Station Alpha) and if i just save, it generates the ass subtitle. Why? Why does it not work for my video?
If I use other speech to text software, they can recognize and transdribe just fine.

what i was able to do with this program is to extract the subtitles from the dvds, and to translate the subtitles. my big problem for months is not being able to have real subtitles. I have only words as you know in the subtitles there are words of agreement but also sentences. so today eight I tried to transcribe a French film to test, and I also had only words and what is funny it is that I chose of course the original spoken language spoken in the film, and what I got are still words in Hindi. because I need the subtle edit only for Hindu films. as you are an expert. I hope you will help me, I don't really know where the problem lies. I see that many people manage to transcribe films without any problem and unfortunately still not. I would like to send a photo so that you can see my result, but I do not know how to do thank you very much and my respects. and happy New Year
Hi, may i ask. what is the default font name and font size used in the video box, because when I try to burn the subtitle in the video, i can't find the font style that it used.
The default font and font sized used in the preview window is Tahoma (bold) Font size 12. You'll probably need to adjust it and preview before you burn subtitles to your video in the burn in window.
Minimum PC requirements to run Nikse pack?
Unfortunarely for Japanese at least it appears to only do individual vocalisations (words and esp sentances are not consolidared resulting in a huge file with predominantly one and two character lines - could reflect the smaller (as opposed to Chinese for example) langauage file from Vosk?? This review (thanks) is excellent but perhaps for the future do English (as it's so universal ) AND another non-Latin type language?

Thanks, Isaac. I'm not sure what the minimum requirements of Subtitle Edit are but it's a light weight program and I don't think it'll burn your computer.

I need to extract Chinese characters from a Chinese video. Any chance to do it using Subtitle Edit to EXTRACT OUT the transcript file or .srt file?

Can I extract the time codes only without having to do the transcription step? as it takes too long on big videos. And it can't pick my language anyway.
I'm not sure you can do that at the moment without doing the transcription. You can Nikse, the creator of Subtitle Edit to add that over on GitHub.

Wonderful! I also want to ask if there is a free program for Windows just like this but doing the opposite? You write the text in subtitle format. It vocalizes at the correct time.
I have Subtitle Edit 4.0.6 and it has text-to-speech. From the Video menu, select "Text to speech and add to video..."

Thanks..I prefer an srt file as my Pot Player often stops playing embedded subtitles after a few minutes. VLC doesn't do this.
