My sons friend did a lot of things to his rental place. The landlord told him to leave everything, as it made the place look nicer. Only to try and keep his deposit for not leaving it how he found it. Good job he recorded the conversation. He won in court, plus extra money 😊

Hi Drew! I wanted to suggest a really nice hack for wallpaper and rental property. My husband was in the military for 26 years and we moved a LOT. One thing I would do that was super nice and easy easy . It’s using fabric as wallpaper and hanging it with Stay-blu liquid starch. As long as pre wash the super dark fabrics, it peals right off when you move and it’s really nice and works great. We did it so so many times. I’d keep and reuse the fabric from home to home and if I fell in love with a certain fabric I’d just get extra to cover future walls.
Please give it a try! Thanks Vicki 😊💕

@@poepoesie6390you pin the fabric to the wall and then use a roller to apply the starch to the fabric against the wall. Or you could roll it on the wall first put the fabric on, and then roll again. You basically want to thoroughly hydrate the fabric with the liquid starch. When you want to take it off you can use a wet sponge, or just peel it off. I did this in my college dorm and it worked out great.

Velcro command strips hands down. If something’s too heavy and wants to come down, the Velcro goes not the strip so no damage. Also the Velcro strips are easier to remove and I know 16 large ones can hold a glass shadow box that weighs 8lbs so those suckers are the best

I haven't read all the comments, so maybe someone else has suggested this, but I always make my own wallpaper paste with cornstarch and water (heated and cooled). It adheres really well, but when it's time to come off, you can just dampen the wallpaper and then wipe the cornstarch slime 😆off the walls. It does work better however if the walls aren't painted in flat paint. But rentals usually use some level of gloss for durability, so it shouldn't be an issue.

  • @deborahgraham4336

Not sure if you have this in the States but up here in Canada we have pre-glued wallpaper. You just drop the length needed in tray of water that is designed for it and then hang it like any other type of wallpaper. It's a bit slippy but that's good for moving it into place. For getting wallpaper off I'd suggest a water bottle with some fabric softener in it. Just spray down the wallpaper (make sure it's really wet) wait a few minutes and the paper comes right off.
Thanks for the rental friendly tips!!

With peel and stick, you can use the wet application method. (With vinyl decal adhesive applications, they use this method for signage companies.) There’s a solution you can make at home…usually with water and a few drops of dish soap, sprayed from a spray bottle. You lightly mist the adhesive side or your surface and you can position the decal/wallpaper in place and squeegee/burnish it down once in place. The solution will eventually dry and become more tacky again. This technique/method is more forgiving for alignment, if you don’t want to worry about it accidentally adhering in the wrong place (and ruining the wallpaper/decal and wall/surface). You can find plenty of videos on how to do it.

Yet the pricing is so much more affordable than real wallpaper, so.....And I've been thinking about getting peel-and-stick floor tile and also covering my outdated faux-granite counter in my hall bath, and so I appreciate your advice on those (going to move forward on the floor tiles but will pass on the countertops - worrying about seams and edges popping up would be a constant source of stress for me and I'd become hard to live with😅

Sadly, I live in FL and have textured walls, so no peel and stick for me. I did find something pretty cool that someone else did, though. My friend got some textured foil wallpaper, put it onto backer board, and screwed it onto the wall behind the stove. She painted some trim with metallic paint and glued it onto the piece with gorilla glue and VOILA! Minimal damage to the wall, and a beautiful metallic backsplash. Backer board is sort of heavy, so you have to screw it into studs, but it turned out beautifully.

This was a very helpful video. Great honest feedback. We have used peel and stick floor tiles as a solution while we save up for new floors. We had mixed success. It is sticking very well in the bathroom where it was installed over old tile. The kitchen floor was a pain because it is a wooden subfloor and not completely even in places. We used the special primer to paint the floor first but the tiles still did not stick properly. We ended up having to pull a bunch up and use double sided carpet tape where all the seams are 😝. Overall we are happy with the floors I just think I didn’t have a proper understanding of the product when I started.

Great to know which ones of these are 'Lone Fox approved'! Unfortunately for me, the only thing I've used peel-and-stick for is my kitchen countertops. 😞I can concur that it was a royal pain in the behind to install it. My sink is circular which made fitting round it even worse. The end result wasn't perfect but it looks better than what was there previously.
There was one spot where the backing paper somehow twisted round as I was sticking it. Turns out that the two sides of the backing paper are not the same and you can't peel it off the wrong side without leaving paper reside on the sticky surface. This left me with a patch near the sink where you can see a 'bubble' that's not fully stuck down, but I've managed to hide it with a rubber draining mat.
I can't say much about the longevity as I've only had mine down about 4 months. I did paint it with several coats of yacht varnish though to try to make it more durable. I don't put hot pans on it, and I do any cutting on a granite worktop board to minimise the chance of any damage. I'm not in a rental any more but I can't afford to do a proper kitchen reno. I used the peel-and-stick and painted the nasty melamine cupboards and gave them new hardware to give the space a bit of a facelift until such time as I can afford to get it redone (who knows when that will be? - not looking likely on current trends!).

For the wallpaper tip as well, make sure whichever you use is applicable for the type of paint on your wall. I decided to not use any wallpaper on my current apartment, though I desperately wanted to, because except for bathrooms and the kitchen, the apartment has flat paint, which I read is easily ripped off when you pull down wallpaper, even peel and stick.
I did read an article or two of a hack with using clothing starch to adhere regular wallpaper to the wall instead, but there are no videos on TH-cam recent enough that I would trust on this. Most who did this showed it in really old videos and weren't 100% certain on the type of paint on their walls when I ask them (and it was hard to tell what kind they had in the video).

@@evakinney3152 I'm moving tomorrow, ironically, and actually like the current color of paint on the walls there, but this is a great tip for whatever next place I move to, if I don't like the color :)

Hi Drew. There is a spray that you can spray on wall before applying the peel and stick and it allows you time to maneuver the wall paper around. I have not used it yet, maybe you can give a video on it to see if it works.

I have always changed out all sorts of things when I have rented a house/apartment (I have bought and owned several homes as well, but due to….life… (aka broken relationships)…I am currently renting again). But I’m also keeping my eye out for a nice home to buy.
Over the years I have gathered some really nice things that I like to use in the place I live.
So I swap the ‘cheap, average, character-lacking’ items that are standard in the place that I start to rent for my own lovely things.
I have several beautiful light fixtures, a great faucet, a few different sized cabinet grips and door handles, a camera door bell and more things like that.
The items that I take down, property of my landlord of course, I will always keep in a storage bin or bag and save them until it’s time to move.
In the meantime I happily use my more luxurious, my taste fulfilling, higher quality stuff.
And when I leave that rental place to live elsewhere, I simply get the storage container with the cheap junk and gladly put those back to where they came from.
One of the most important objects that I have and that I use in EVERY SINGLE place I live in (whether rented or bought) is my own set of LOCK INTERIORS (one for the front door and one for the back door) that both need/use the same key.
I ALWAYS change those IMMEDIATELY, the moment that I get the keys to my new place of living.
I do not trust on any promise or assumption that the landlord has changed out that lock between tenants and I certainly wouldn’t want to find some unknown person simply walking in using their old key!
Again I do the same: the lock that was inside the doors are kept in storage and changed back when I leave!

Love your content. Always watch. If I call the full home makeover you did, you used peel and stick countertops for their bathroom. Have you gotten any updates from the family?

I have done the electric tape hack in a Pakistan where we have a coastal humid temperature. It has stayed for a whole year so well. Just on very hot days it has shrunk a bit

The one thing that concerns me about peel and stick in older homes aren't square. It may help with that but sometimes what's on there before can warp the peal and stick flooring. 😃😃👋👋💖💖

    Upgrade 2: stick floor tile
I am taking off the stick floor tile I have put on my bathroom not because I didn't like it, I've had it for years and it was of good quality, but because every time water falls on the floor or when washing the floor, I noticed that water seeps under the sticks, so I thought this would be creating fungi and bacteria, so I decided to remove. But it's a shame because it's very easy to install.
Thank you for this compilation it is useful!
