    The first thing I would do, before removing all of your “ improvements “ is ask the landlord if you could leave your “improvements “. They certainly enhanced the look of the apartment and it might save you a lot of time not having to remove anything.

    I rent from a corporation in The Netherlands. Taking into account that every aparment I rented had no floors, no ceiling lights (only wires sticking out), no kitchen appliances, walls with layers of wallpaper riddled with holes and so the freedom of choosing the flooring I want, paint the walls in whatever colors I choose... if and when I move I take my own stove, fridge and washing machine, negotiate with the next tenant if they want to buy the floor from me....
    I just feel like landlords are much stricter than corporations. I can basically do anything I want. And when I moved into my most recent apartment I got a brand new kitchen counter for free (and I got to choose from like 25 samples) because the old counter was almost falling apart.
    Living and renting in this country is very different, but it's so cool to see what you do with your space!

    For your faux Roman shade, if you don’t like to sew, you can always use stitch witchery tape, available in any craft or sewing store, or even Walmart. This is how I hem everything! You still have to measure and fold over whatever edges you want to finish. The stitch witchery tape gets placed under the folded edge and then you press with a hot iron! Couldn’t be easier. And then you also don’t have any visible stitches.

The ONLY suggestion I would make is to not only show the project, but step back and show a zoomed out view of what the room looks like after … and stay on it for 3-4 seconds or so. I'd love to do some kind of stenciling on the walls to add some artistic flair...after watching this video, I think I will finally be able to some of that so it wont destroy the walls & then can be easily removed when I can move! Absolutely!! Mine also says nothing more than nail holes in the wall, but honestly, as long as you take the care and effort to remove all the changes and fill the holes with spackle, it is fine. I'm certain that clause is only in there because some people would just move out, leaving all the damage behind.

    7 ish years ago removable bead board was put up, granted not with command hooks but something similar. The adhesive had been on so long it kidna welded to the wall and damaged it when it came off.
    Spackle fixed it right up and it wasn’t major but it was annoying. I don’t think the adhesive used in products like command hooks and wallpapers are intend to stay up for years at a time, but they do keep the damages down when renovating.

    For the outlet and lightswitch plate covers, inexpensive to a bit more expensive foam insulation for these can be used for a bit of insulation. Plastic childproof outlet covers can be used. The outiet covers have the oval foam punch outs, which slits can be made and placed over the plastic caps. Great for adding a bit extra insulation. Especially for some outside walls in which when the outlet, light switchplate covers are removed, drafts of air are too cold in the winters. Not a whole house insulation solution, but on the inexpensive, easy to do list of inside insulation projects.

    Everything you’ve done in your unit looks awesome Ally. I always love your videos. You always do such a great job on your diy’s. It’s pretty hard when you are renting to make your home look nice and you do just that. TFS with all of us. Enjoy your week.

    I'd love to know what your metric for "renter friendly" is, so many of these would totally not fly in most of the places I've rented! haha.
    Anything that involves drilling into a wall is basically a no-go = (

      It's totally dependent on where you live for sure. My first apartment allowed nothing larger than a push pin. But my last two were ok with screws in the wall as long as they're removed and spackled over at move out. But I will keep that in mind for some future projects!

    • @asherritz7548
      @asherritz7548 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      You can get away with doing it anyway if you're willing to spackle and paint before you move out. I do this all the time

    Do NOT use those command tape hangers! My renter used tgem all over the house..every single one peeled the paint right off the wall. Some down to the drywall. Absolute mess! Removable doesnt always mean damage free..js

    • @jennytait1183
      @jennytait1183 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That totally sucks. Whoever removed them did not remove them properly. You need to pull the tab downwards for it to not peel the paint/drywall. If you just pull it away from the wall it will take everything with.

    Could you line the caned ceiling cylinder w/baking parchment paper to hide the origional fixture?

    • @magpie92766
      @magpie92766 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Of course you could. Or you could use spray adhesive to line it with a pc of sheer material. You can find cheap ones at dollar stores or thrift stores. If you use LED bulbs so it doesn't throw off heat, you could use adhesive frosted privacy film. It might stay up using a regular bulb, but after spending time on the project, better safe than ruining the privacy film.

    These are all awesome ideas! We live in a condo community in AZ w/limited outdoor space (zero privacy for that outdoor space due to a 2 story unit that "L's" to ours). Due to having that "fish bowl" feeling (combined with so many people using cameras/security cameras) it just hasn't felt like a comfortable place to hang out. Your ideas gave me some ideas & the some.So, hoping to hack your balcony privacy/screen hack in a way to remedy each issue. Thank you for sharing your creativity - what a gift!
