    As a Canon 6D user I can see that the Sony A7iii has almost everything I would want, the killer feature for me being eye focus. However, I got about 20 excellent lenses, 4 flashes, L-brackets, remote controllers etc that would be shockingly expensive to buy for Sony - all accessories are very pricey in the Sony world, so I am planning on getting by another year or two to see what Canons ff mirror less will be like. I am very glad that Sony is pushing it this way, as consumers we stand to gain from competition.

    • @ladislavsvencik
      @ladislavsvencik 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Richard Rönnbäck you can use adapter at start and switch to Sony glasses later on. There are cheap but very good Godox flashes at really good value.

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Ladislav svencik Yes, I could, but I personally think that it would be a less satisfying option. Autofocus with adapted glass seems to be a mixed bag, sometimes working really well, other times working really bad, and when/if I switch I want it to be an upgrade, not only I features, but in experience. Godox flashes are great, I use them as studio flashes. I buy a lot of my gear used, and the secon hand market for Canon gear is enormous, and with good prices, but for Sony very limited and with few bargains, so a switch leads to having to buy new gear, which often has a Sony premium price tag, unfortunately. That is something that will improve over time, but right now the cost of a switch is prohibitive, for me at least.

    • @6gwilliams
      @6gwilliams 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Richard Ronnback, I was a pro Canon user for 40 years, yes 40 and switched to Sony mirrorless back in January 2017 and have no regrets. I used my Canon lenses with adapters for a while and then transitioned to Sony and Sigma glass. It was worth it. I sold all my Canon gear cameras, lenses, flashes and accessories to my camera dealer and got store credit for my Sony and Sigma gear. I lost some, but not as much as you might think. It was all well worth the change. I use Godox/Flashpoint strobes now. The Sony system is so much better than the best from Canon. Yes you could wait to see if Canon's full-frame mirrorless release will allow you to use your Canon lenses, or be brave and switch now. Your choice and your budget. Cheers

      @MuixEmXee 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      from 10 years of experience with Canon personly, I would suggest that you sell it and slowly build your arsenal back with Sony gear. Canon just has a much larger market share that they have not invested in innovative new products anymore. That is the only reason why Sony has this opportunity to come all this way from the noisiest camera bodies a decade ago. cheers..

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Glad to hear you are happy, and I suspect I would be too, but for me as an enthusiast, rather than a working professional, cost is real issue. The option of switching is always there, but if/when Canon come out with a FF mirrorless I feel my options for choice will be even wider, so with that in mind, I will hang out and use what I got.

    This was a very informative and practical review of the two camera systems. I bought an A7RII in 2021 for about 700us $ equivalent and was quite thinking whether I made the right decision. Had second thoughts about having a Canon 6D instead. But once I got used to how to shoot with Sony, it’s pretty amazing. Proved that my purchase was right decision. But as you said, you’ll have to set aside some decent money for lenses to match Sony’s performance.
    In 2021, there’s few amazing Tamron FE lenses for enthusiasts. I got the 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 and it is simply stunning for the money and versatility. Very sharp in the whole focal range, than any other non premium lenses out there.

    Dan in low light and tap screen focus which system is the fastest to use to acquire a focus point. The only reason I ask is I shoot events on stage (video) often I can't use the EVF or OVF fast enough or I need a elevated angle.

  • @PaulAmyes
    @PaulAmyes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +153

    Sorry but if you can’t shoot an event or a wedding with the 6d mkii that says more about as a photographer than it does about the camera. Pro photography has nothing to do with spec sheets.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      You absolutely can, but you absolutely shouldn't. The Canon 6D mkII is missing some key features that every event shooter SHOULD have given the choice... And you do have a choice! If the 6DII was the only camera around, sure...it's a great camera and I certainly could shoot just about anything with it. But when the A7III, D750, and even the 7DII exist, you have to ask yourself who should buy the 6DII over the other cameras. Pro photography is all about finding the best tool for the task at hand and there are not many jobs the 6DII is better at than other cameras.

    • @chosenbydestiny

    Man, nice review, however... You keep saying that "it depends on your usage", but then destroy Canon with on argument positive for Sony, and repeat that cycle again and again and again... You seem so innocent as if you are really trying to show that the 6d is actually OK, right before putting it down again.
    I'm trying only to give you a constructive remark. You focus way too much on how the Sony is better on specific points COMPARED TO THE CANON, and when something is good on the Canon you DO NOT SAY IT'S BETTER THAN ON THE SONY, while this is true in, not all, but many cases. This makes you sound way much subjective than you seem to aim for.
    The caps in my comment are only for emphasis.

    I love what Sony is doing with the A7lll. I shoot with the 6dmk2 and love the quality i am getting out of it. My only gripe I have with sony is I tend to shoot in the rain and snow often and Sony’s water resistance seems to be below their competitors. So far I have shot in downpours and blizzards with the Canon with no issues from it o my Tamron lenses.

    Love the comparison. Can’t wait to see what Nikon and Canon comes out with for their first FF mirrorless offering. I feel like the release of the A7III will mean that both Nikon and Canon will add additional features that they might have otherwise left out.

    • @6gwilliams
      @6gwilliams 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jimmy Ngo, I agree . The Sony A7III puts the pressure on Nikon and Canon to try and match features at the same price, a daunting task for their first full-frame mirrorless cameras.

    • @shang-hsienyang1284
      @shang-hsienyang1284 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Meh, only people who want to buy camera with high performance and good value would buy Sony. The majority only care about brand names and Canon would make way more money with the M50 than all three Sony cameras (a9, a7Riii, a7iii) combined.

      and canablise there existing DSLR lineup? no chance

    • @OrlandoMac
      @OrlandoMac 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jonneymendoza actually I think Canon will put out a decent offering it won't be Sony specs, it will be less all around with no IBIS but it will be good enough that most canon shooters heavily invested in the Canon ecosystem still opt to stay, and then the next day Sony will drop another camera that will miniaturize the Canon launch at half the price.. Sure Sony really hit it out of the park with the latest round of a7 mark 3 line-up.. But they didn't launch any new sensors really it was only reiterations of previous technology.. They are holding out waiting for the competition to drop their best, to dwarf it. That would be my opinion. Fun times unless you are on the board of Canon, and your bonus depends on a lazy R&D department that hasn't been funded properly in the last decade. Oops.

And high iso is clean) but i still prefer Canon color. I don’t have any Sony Native lens and i used my canon EF lenses with Sigma Mc-11 and i did not encounter any issue with it AND i can use Aye focus (which is a plus and saved me money buying FE lenses.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, you certainly can but you probably shouldn't. In theory I could shoot a wedding with any camera. But with cameras like that you are taking certain risks as they are not weather sealed, can't shoot dual cards for redundancy, and have more limited low light performance and a good portion of the wedding usually is shot over 800ISO. With the 6D II my main issues with shooting weddings are the lack of 2 card slots. Weddings are so important that I don't recommend taking any unnecessary risk and shooting them with a 77D and the 18-35 (even though I love both of those and highly recommend them) would not be my choice. I would 100% rent and use the 77D as my backup.

    Thanks

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So yes, Sony lenses will be more expensive than the Canon EF lenses but that's because they don't make EF cameras anymore so you are buying very old lenses and I'm sure the resale value of Canon lenses will be MUCH lower than Sony lenses in a few years. Portraits aren't the most demanding so both of these cameras would pull it off nicely but the A7III definitely has the most advanced autofocus system which will track focus on your subject better and will have more dynamic range if your doing more environmental portraits.

  • @thesharpercoder
    @thesharpercoder 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Dan says the 6D2 offers no improvement in video technology. But, it does. The 6D2 has digital video stabilization in video modes, and the next generation of DPAF.
    The Sony eye detection AF system falls short in low light conditions. Why do you think they keep releasing firmware updates for it? Because it does not work very well. It fails to focus quickly, if at all, in backlit shooting conditions, or low light shooting conditions.
    Why do people complain about the focus points being clustered in the center? I ask because these are the same people who tell you that they do not use all of the AF points, anyway. The 6D2 has 45 cross type AF points, while the Sony has zero.
    But the Sony has 693 phase detection points, and 425 contrast detection zones, you might say. Well, you are comparing apples to oranges, mirrorless vs. DSLR focusing systems, which use a separate AF sensor, instead of the main image sensor. So, how many AF points does the 6D2 have on its’ image sensor? With DPAF, that means each of the 24MP on the image sensor is a potential focusing point.
    With the high number of available AF points in the latest cameras, no one should move AF points around anymore. For one, it is too slow to move the AF point selector around the viewfinder. Most cameras offer a reduced set of AF points to choose from.
    Two, instead of focus and recompose, you should be thinking expose and recompose. In most cameras, spot focus is only available on center AF point. If your photography is so demanding that you need to focus and recompose, or select AF points, then you should also be worried about your metering.
    In most cameras, you can spot meter with the center AF point, and lock exposure. With AF tracking turned on, the camera will stay locked onto your original subject as you recompose the shot. Meanwhile, exposure stays locked onto your original spot focus point.
    No more need to move your selected AF point. Instead of focus and recompose, just meter and recompose. Let AF tracking keep your subject in focus as you recompose the shot.

    Re: dual card slots, I'm not completely sold on that one. I once had a card seemingly go corrupt and lost some of the images in a single card slot camera. I later discovered that it was caused by a loose battery grip and intermittent connections to the contacts. It would be interesting to know whether having dual card slots would've saved those pictures in that situation with those loose contacts. It would be good to hear reports from photographers who have had experience of one card going bad while the other was good still good in a dual card slot machine, as well as reports of incidences both cards going bad, if such a thing ever happens.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, dual card slots would have not helped you hear. It basically prevents against card failure. However, I love it as well because after an important event like a wedding, I will immediately remove 1 card from the camera and keep it in a different location from the camera and keep the other card in my camera. I will then import my images ONLY from the card in the camera and only after that card has been backed up in multiple locations and I view the images to make sure they are good will I delete card #1. That way in case the camera got stolen, there was an error during import, or my computer hard drive crashed before the images had been backed up on multiple drives, I still have my 2nd card. So for me, it's more than just card failure protection but also against loss, theft, and computer crashes

      @lifetimesofamultiplemediam1003 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      WOW!… Has any of that stuff ever happened to you?… or are you just a worrier by nature? I know you can never be too careful, but all those possibility/probability stats do sound a bit stressful. By the way, do you shoot weddings with two cameras? which would equal FOUR cards, and at least four hard drives as a result?…

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For weddings, I will do ANYTHING possible to never tell a client that I don't have their images of a wedding. That would be the end of my job. I shoot weddings with 2 cameras and have 2 cards in each camera so 4 cards total each shooting RAW so I will often have 350GB per wedding in images. But I am only backing up 1 of the cards from each camera (the other is kept untouched in a different location until I can verify card 1 pictures are good and backed up which is usually 2 weeks) and I will backup both cameras to the same drive. Thus I do use 4 cards but only 1 hard drive.

    I still feel that the characterization of the 6DII as an "entry level" camera is borderline insulting, it's still a $2000 FF body and as such we as consumers should totally expect more from it. My 80D (which I adore) has better base DR, 100% viewfinder coverage, better AF coverage, 1/8000s shutter all at half the price of the 6DII. The 6DII is only "entry level" in relation to the 5DIV and 1DXII, it should be better than the rest of the lineup in every way just like even the "cheapest" Lamborghinis are better than mainstream sports cars. The A7III is the leap forward the 6DII should have been and that's the biggest offender because Canon has shown with the 5DIV and 80D that they can make brilliant cameras. I'll always keep my 80D and maybe even upgrade it to the 90D if it's a worthy successor but my next FF body won't be from Canon, the bigger sensor and even all its intrinsic advantages aren't worth the $1000 difference and all the other ridiculous downgrades.

    • @peterjmsyoung
      @peterjmsyoung 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what Dan is referring as he was also comparing A7III is the "entry level" to A7RIII and A9, so equivalent to the Canon 6D is "entry level" to Canon 5DIV and 1DXII :-)

    • @B3ansGuy
      @B3ansGuy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter James Young I meant it more generally, as even when the 6DII was announced last summer people were trying to brush off its shortfalls by calling it "entry level".
      I don't disagree that the more expensive FF bodies should be better than these (relatively) cheaper bodies but as I said, $2000 is still $2000 and there should be bare minimums the consumer gets for their money.

      I'm assuming you have the Canon 400mm lens? It should work fine on the Sony but you will not get the tracking autofocus speed/performance that you would using it on a Canon or getting a native Sony lens like Sony's 100-400mm lens. It's good enough for when birds are still but I think it would be tough to catch birds in flight with adapters

      @sytwang 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that is correct, I have the Canon 400mm 5.6 f Lense, sorry for being vague. Thank you for your reply and input.
      I asked, because i was considering switching over. However, Sony lack the proper glass to make the switch, and i noticed a lot of sony shooters have metabone adaptors for their canon/nikon lenses.
      I saw another video, the youtuber mentioned that you will lose the 10 shots per second with adaptors... I guess i'll just have to wait for canon to make their move.

      Hey! So I live in Orlando Fl so heat is definitely a thing I deal with. I've had the camera overheat on me 1 time in direct sun outside on a particularly bad day after 30 min. The camera does have a setting that allows it to heat up much higher before flagging a warning so I turn that on before a big event like a wedding and I'm usually good. It's definitely still possible but much more rare than on Sony's previous cameras.

    What first lens should it get for the A7? I do NOT want to pay over $1000 for a a lens. For that I wouls just rather stick to m4/3 and fast primes which are tack sharp and better than a lot of sony lenses I heard. However I do want better light photos thus im considering an A7ii.

    i have no idea which one is better and, am I a dumb guy if I say someone pretty good using one of them will do amazing things? and not sure other people will know which camera he used? Because we are so much focus on the high tech comparing pixel that we forget the purpose of a camera
