@@whisky2roxy I'll back you up on that. Saw them twice, both times they were a poor approximation of the album versions, and not in a good 'improvisational' way.
Pete Townshend's Guitar riff on Can't Explain is Priceless and more particular memorable in this live 2000 version than the 1966 original But as I will always say The Who essentially helped invent punk Rock Punk Rock was always around before the late 70s it was just more concealed and hidden with Bands like The Who.
Another prime example of John Endwistle's excellent showmanship. ;) ...As if he needed showmanship. He was already too badass standing there staring at his fretboad...
pure magic... blessed to have had The Who as the sound track to my childhood. When we lost Keith, it was definitely tough to get my head around it, but when we lost John, it was as if the movie suddenly stopped, the lights came on and the ushers pulled us from our seats and pushed us out the door into the dark night. As a bassist, I always knew that he was the one who had written the holy words onto the stone tablets and dutifully held them high for us children to see... Thanks for sharing this glimpse into some of the final moments of greatness
Try 10-22-21 at 9:20am in Hagerstown Md. Waiting for my client to come out. At 6'1" 250 lbs 65 yrs old black male still rocking THE WHO EX LOUD ! AND I STILL CAN'T EXPLAIN!
I was at this concert when I was 7! So lucky to have gone there!! I just noticed after watching one of the earlier performances of this song, that they use more distortion on this version. There is one positive thing in my opinion that has evolved in rock and that is the increase in distortion! This is probably the best version of this song!!!
I think this version of the song is the best version ever - far better than the original. What makes it so much better I don't even know. I guess you could say I "can't explain" why!
This is one of those rare tunes in that I like almost evert remake of it, by any band with real passion that gives it a try. None as good as these guys, of course. But I like them all, nonetheless. :)
The Who did some mighty stuff, but this, as far as I'm concerned was the best. Saw them live when it came out, and from then on, this piece always gets me on the move. No arty-farty stuff.
What a band! What a time! The mod band of the age, Vespas, Lambrettas, purple's and blue's and a weekend run down to the coast with hundreds of others to party till you dropped.
@ 1:14 I find mastery of a guitar, that riff could sustain me aesthetically for a good long time. And during the riff, if you watch, that Bassist is playing frets very quickly...
crazy how if some kid saw this as their first time seeing the who, they would go back and think wow the drummer didn’t age a bit 😂and they all sound the same
Best windmills since Silverdome '75. I was there: 5 Fahrenheit, 6 Schlitz, 3 liverwurst and mustard on rye; 3 peanut butter and honey, also on rye; 15 bucks, rockers, 100+ decibels, 4 buddies.

this is the greatest concert opening ever in rock history
Those boyz sounds just as fabulous as the first time hearing them do this ! Ringos son sounds and looks like Keith Moon ! WOW !
under my thumb was cool but equal
@@92908777 Under My Thumb in 1981-1982 sucked. Give me JJF over that every day
@@ctrlshiftqq9846 Remind me what we're talking about. I cannot find it.
Arguably, the best live post-Moon performance of "I Can't Explain" ever!
No, the best are those old grainy black and whites of the original when Moon was still alive.
OKAY I WILL ARGUE , IT IS IS NOT .
Agree 💯
I'm guessing Kenny Jones on drums?
@@gregv79 No, it's Zak Starkey on drums.
Pete Townshend is one of the most articulate people in the music business. If he can't explain, nobody can.
He's also allegedly a pedo so you enjoy supporting that weirdo
Pure rock 'n roll. Best 3 chords ever written.
Townshend gets me chills.
Yes... He is a ANGRY... EXPLODING ROCKIN REBEL WEAPON
How fitting that only Ringo Starr's son could come close to what Keith did on this song. Excellent drumming going on here.
GREAT SHOWMANSHIP!
YEARS AND YEARS LATER AND THEY STILL SOUND GREAT.
Godson to Keith
Moon taught him.
Also his playing style is close to Keith at times.......but he damn sure can play ! 🥁
Moon lived just up the road to the Starrs. Used to go over, grab the sticks and say, not like that, like this
Townshend looks to be the most dangerous man on the planet. Like a lightning conductor channeling energy straight from the Big Bang.
OH MY GOD!!!....the ENERGY....that comes through....on a damn computer screen!!!
Maybe the greatest live band ever... Amazing band, amazing journey!!! 👍🏾👍🏻🎸🎸🎯
I reckon they are. Total excitement.
Hard to argue with that comment.👍👌
I went to one of their farwell tour shows in 82😜
Saw the Who for the first time, I think 1970 in Cleveland. James Gang was the opening act, followed by James Taylor, then the Who. Best concert ever.
Saw The Who 1976 in Glasgow as a15 yr old. Goosebumps then and now. Saw many bands but none came close to these guys....
Park head, Alex Harvey Band supporting?
RIP Ox. You are missed.
Still kick ass like no other band ever
Best live rock band in the world.
Best rock band ever. The rule of thumb for acts was never follow The Who on stage. The Stones ,Chili Peppers, and others found out the hard way
Well except for Zeppelin !😀
Neither should have appeared within a Marshall of one another.
@@gregg06141969 Zep was an awful live band. Usually drunk, sloppy and boring. However, they have five of the greatest rock albums.
@@whisky2roxy I'll back you up on that. Saw them twice, both times they were a poor approximation of the album versions, and not in a good 'improvisational' way.
The perfect rock band. Keith and John sadly missed now. Seeing them live.. incredible
Never before, never since, wi) there
ever be anything as good as this.
Why does this song let me feel so great? I can't explain....
To be fair i think The Who,Mod influenced everything the best youth cult of them all, only my opinion....
HELL YEAH BROTHER THAT'S ROCK N ROLL
Pete is always IN YOUR FACE guitar playing. Gotta love that.
Nobody can windmill like him MISTER!!
Some of the best rock guitar performances ever, the last minute is pure onslaught 😵😵😵😎😎
No matter how many times i see the WHO perform this song it still sounds fresh and strong. BEST LIVE BAND PERIOD !!!
My favorite live Version. RIP John
Seen the WHO in north London 1973 . Started with can't explain. i can't explain how good this was. Never forget it. Ever.
Seen?
Another prime example of John Endwistle's excellent showmanship. ;)
...As if he needed showmanship. He was already too badass standing there staring at his fretboad...
Garetphelps should we tell him?
Bei tempi puro rock❤
Zak Starkey good job.
Have figure of all the young drummers in the world, he would be the least likely to have been "star struck" or intimidated at that first audition.
How many people think Zak is a better drummer than his Dad Ringo?
mary k not one person, including himself.
@@maryk446 bit unfair that, different styles different abilities. Horses for courses
@@maryk446 Even his dad said Zak is better than him. But Zak is an extremely humble man. A proper musician. Not egotistical prick.
Zak Starkey is a freaking monster!
best performance of i can't explain i've ever seen!!!!!!

The Who at The Royal Albert Hall, this is probably the best concert hall on earth!!
God help any band who had to follow there act. Such raw power!
Isn’t that why Hendrix set fire to his guitar at one festival?
NEITHER CAN I ??? ... ETERNALLY BLOODY BRILLIANT !!!
