Thank you for watching!! I forgot to mention on Friday, when we revealed the girls' bedroom that we have a play list of all of our project before and after videos starting with the kitchen almost two years ago (when Tom gave me a hard time for wanting open shelves ;)! You can find it here: th-cam.com/play/PLZ-AWUEixtg1NQkjA1xk2HFLzsfFv1_f_.html We hope you have a great day! Love, Dawn & Diana

This topic is so counter intuitive for me. It’s exactly like the toy issue. Less toys= better play. I noticed that with food, too. I can only manage so much, I am not Mrs.Cosco, I don’t have employees and things go bad. Thank you for teaching there is only so much we can manage. I haven’t gotten there yet 100% but I rely on you guys wisdom weekly. God bless you for helping so many

I am dealing with lots of Just in Case items - However, I am trying to focus positively on those items I have released. Thus cutting back on the guilt of those items I just can not yet let go of.
I don't have a bidet but use a Peri Bottle @ $1.78 ( includes tax) it is one of the best purchases I have made in 2020 ! It is clean, doesn't take up space, certainly paid for itself and comfortable to use.
I do keep several months worth of toilet tissue and other items on hand as I plan to retire in a few months and will work part time so prepping allows me security to know my food, personal care, and pet needs are taken care of.

Us, too! 5 kids and 20+ years of just in case or what if the kids feel sad if I give this away - so much to get rid of! Yet, so many decisions to make. We love Marie Kondo, and her show, but it is quite a process and I love the Minimal Mom approach
of giving away things and then gaining confidence as you go along.

Glad to hear others have long term stuff to go through too. I have 54 years worth of items as I now have the house I grew up in, along with things of my siblings and my parents. My struggle is the emotional side of decluttering. I can only go thru so much before I get overwhelmed. I am working on identifying items to keep for immediate use or donate, then setting aside all the other items that I cannot make a decision on into bins to go thru at another time. Yes it will take me longer but will also, hopefully, have a positive effect on my mental health.

Throwing out most of my craft fabric helped me actually use the rest!
I got rid of everything except what I needed for my three favourite ideas. After years of sitting in my loft I have recovered a chair, made drawstring bags to store my potatoes in and am more than half way through the patchwork quilt.
Lose the extra so you can actually focus on the ones you want to do the most.

I always love to shop, specially dollar store, home decor, clothes etc. I accumulated too much stuff and my home was so clutter. After following you and Joshua Becker I started to declutter. My home was so cluttered and with my toddler twins it became more messier. I was too stressed. But after at least 4 months of decluttering, i started to feel much better now. I have less stuff to take care of and my home feel much organized and clean. I have donated too many items bags to salvation army. With my toddler I don't have time to sale items. Each time we have donated we always pray to God please help someone with this items.
I don't have enough words to express how thankful I'm for you guys. You have helped me a lot and given my life a different and real prospective. Thank you for reminding us that often our extras can help others. I’m learning. I especially like it when it helps someone I hear about directly. My niece had to declutter her MIL’s home after she passed away. She was giving away tons of things. I ended up with about 20 cans of various kinds of beans. I live alone, so it was going to take me years to eat all of them. Then I “happened” to hear about a lady who was helping her neighbors in need of food! Imagine my joy when I could help her by donating my extras! It was so exciting to see the Lord using all of us to help these families. Yes, if we listen, we can hear His voice.
Thank you for your beautiful message and prayer!

I used to be the person that everyone would call if they needed something. I am almost 40, and when I was in elememtery school, my teachers called me a bag lady. I had enough pencils for the whole class, enough of ANYTHING. Even at church, for VBS, I had toilet paper rolls that I had saved... I am getting out of it, thru several years of watching organizing and decluttering videos. I saved EVERYTHING for just in case. I have a long way to go... I am caring for my mom who has beginning dementia, so I have to sneak some things out of the house, but now instead of being the just in case person to just being the prepared person. My elderly mother becomes anxious because she can't find the thing she is looking for amidst all her "stuff." Being raised in an era when she had very little and often did without has caused her to hang onto everything. She doesn't see this as a problem, but it gives me real peace of mind knowing that if I want or need something, I know exactly where it's located because it isn't covered up by a pile of other things. Dawn, you are SO right about how having fewer things to manage actually brings about a sense of peace - it's calming especially when things around us are so chaotic right now.

    • @EmmaAppleBerry
      @EmmaAppleBerry 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Same! Its been a real struggle to declutter even broken or such obvious things that need mending or arent being used but she thinks can be macgyvered. Maybe when things werent all made of plastic and most things were made of wood and metal and could easily be reused or would still be useful in 50 years it made sense especially when most people had the skills and tools to repurpose them but also lived in bigger houses with lots of storage and rarely if ever moved but now it really is a massive burden not just on the person who often doesnt realise but on the people around them.

I understand the anxiousness. I went through a bad divorce after appx 26 yrs of marriage. I lost my 3,000 plus sq ft home and my lifestyle. I had already lost my career due to health so basically I lost my good health. I had a grandchild pass on to heaven, my son became mentally ill so I feel like I lost all my dreams for him, etc etc etc. Now I'm afraid of letting go of things and not having the money (on disability which is not enough to cover the basics) to replace any item. I have nice furniture and knick knacks, and gadgets from when I was married. Nothing can be replaced if I get rid of it. So I understand her fear. I want to get ready of the clutter. I like things nice and neat and organized...however losing a big home and living in a small 2 bedroom mobile home there is no room for anything. I have to get rid of stuff. I just wish I knew the answer on how to overcome the fear and anxiousness.

Lori W my grandparents were great keepers. I think it was going through the war in Britain when everything was in short supply and rationed. They never threw away a pice of string, an elastic band, a piece of brown paper etc. I think in some ways my generation still has that folk memory of ‘making do’ and being frugal. But in a world of obsessive consumers that is no bad thing.

    • @loriw4765
      @loriw4765 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@TermiteVideo I agree. My grandmother died with these worn out, threadbare rugs on her cold bathroom floor. When my dad and his family went through her belongings, they found several brand new rugs grandma never used because her old ones hadn't completely fallen apart yet. My generation buys new rugs and towels just to change home decor - such a different mindset!

Last week, I pulled a large roasting pan/rack out of my cabinet that I have used only once in 27 years of marriage. We do host Thanksgiving for my family, but only every other year. And my husband likes to BBQ the turkey and this pan didn't fit our barbecue. But I was holding on to it "just in case" I ever decided to cook the turkey in our oven! So grateful to be able to bless another family with this really very nice roasting pan.

I started decluttering my home on October 2nd (2020, the crazy year) and have made excellent progress so far. My entrance closet, half bath, full bath, linen closet, living room, dining room, and kitchen are now done. My master bedroom is in process as well. It felt so good to get rid of some very nice casual clothes that haven't fit me in years. Covid was awesome for "what if" items, because in my mind. Covid was the what if moment. What if we can't go to the store... what if I get time to actually do the things... etc.
I was able to declutter projects that I was saving for "what if I had time"... well I had plenty of time with Covid and didn't do them, I also had no desire to do them... so they are gone now.
Another hard one for me is lounge wear, all clothes that are no longer nice enough to wear out gets downgraded to lounge wear. Well with covid, if I didn't wear it when my whole wardrobe was lounge wear, it went..
With that mentality I was able to declutter so much this year.

I'm new-ish in my walk with minimalism. I've grown up purging stuff often as we moved around a lot. We got rid of stuff and just bought new stuff. I've loved watching your videos because it has helped me stay on goal of, not just tossing and dontating what I no longer want or use but also keeping me accountable for not bringing on more new, sparkley things.
Today, after probably a month of searching for a clock I was convinced I needed, I bought one I love! But when I got it home a thought struck me. I'd love the look of it in the master bathroom...it certainly would make a "statement" but then I remembered that today I have to reset ALL the clocks in my house and this would be one more..way up high. More to manage.
I will be returning the clock and never even took it out of my car! 😂
Thanks for sharing your wisdom and helping keep me accountable with my goals for myself and family!

    Dawn,
I saw this quote yesterday and I immediately thought of what you and Diana are always sharing about how minimalism is also a spiritual journey. Thought you might enjoy it.
"It’s not barns full of fruit, which would allow us to take our temporal ease, that God wants to give. He wants us to be satisfied with the basics and devote our time, talents, and resources to other, more fulfilling pursuits. The kingdom of God stresses relationships, service, and developing our minds, talents, and character." -S. Michael Wilcox
Thank you for all your devotion to share that light and knowledge with the world. I appreciate all your hard work. Love your channel!

Aww I just love you girls!!! What a lovely message and tips on letting go...
Been watching the news off and on all day and getting flustered. I took a break and watched this and it just gave me such a sense of peace and feeling of being grounded and connected, and on track with my purpose and the work in front of me.
I like the idea of the liberation of NOT being the person who has “it” when it comes time to sign up and volunteer...of not keeping track “it”, or trying to maintain whatever obscure thing I use once or twice a year or have saved when the kids have a ...whatever thing!

Hi Dawn! I never comment because it’s not really my thing but I do watch ALL of your videos! I just wanted tell you that I put you and your whole family on my gratitude list this morning.
I realize that when you put out a new video and I see your face pop up on TH-cam I feel such a warm comforting peaceful excitement. You have given me so many great tips that little by little have changed my home and my life. I always feel like you present ideas in such an approachable that I feel inspired to do what I can rather than overwhelmed that I can’t do it.
I have been on a mission do beat Christmas before it beats me for the past 5 years. That means I get started early so that I can manage everything and prevent a last minute consumer frenzy. My best tip is that I take notes every year on what worked and what didn’t so I repeat the good stuff the following year but not fall into the same traps. I so appreciate your Christmas videos because I know we are coming from a similar space. I heard that you said one of your love languages is words of affirmation, which is why I’m taking the time to comment instead of silently appreciating you.

I"m a 62 year old Gramma of ten who just adores your wisdom and have been a subscriber for awhile. Interestingly, I was following Cas's Christmas Prep video and was working on the Kitchen declutter. Quite proud of myself and my efforts, I tackled each drawer of my kitchen. While doing so, I encountered a 2 inch half circle gray plastic piece of something under the foil wrap. I tossed it. Then had seconds thoughts and retrieved it. The next week, I was following instructions from Cas to deep clean my dishwasher.......low and behold, I had forgotten that the top spinner on my dishwasher had fallen off a year ago, and I could not fix it. Stuck it at the back of the cupboard under the sink. Since my dishwasher was newly sparkling clean, I decided to try again to fix it......Guess what? The 2 inch semi circle gray plastic piece was needed to snap on the spinner arm!!! Ta Da.....Clean and FIXED! So whether it was a God thing or not ( I'm gonna say it was) I'm so glad I didn't toss that unidentified piece! However, if it wasn't for my two awesome declutter channels.....I would have never known that piece was there. Love your content and thank you for your inspired words of peace.

Going through the first round of this pandemic really has mentally helped me realize that if we didn’t use it then, we’re not going to use it. I started purging this week and I’m not sure how I stumbled onto your videos. Usually I listen to audiobooks when cleaning. Most of your decision making concepts are applicable to everywhere so it’s a good repetitive motivator. I’ve heard these habits before but your genuine expressive nature is encouraging. However not til this video did I understand that you and your sister are my kind of people. Thanks for sharing your journey.

The one thing I have done recently is to ensure I have a week's worth of meals in the freezer in case we have to self-isolate at any point. I know once I get things pared down to where I would like to be it will feel more peaceful like most of the rest of my house has become. Thank you so much for encouraging everyone to pray for our elected officials. If everyone in the nation would do that, can't you just imagine how that would change our politics...and our outcomes?

I am working really hard to declutter my home and you have both been a great source of motivation and inspiration throughout my journey. I definitely feel more prepared for things to come having less things to deal with and also knowing what I actually have! All of our in expensive just in case items are heading out of our house. It's so freeing to be in the mindset of erring on the side of getting rid of things. I know that if I desperately need something that I don't have I can replace it. You are so right that you don't miss the things that you get rid of. I was such a sentimental hoarder but clearing things out and taking photos of sentimental items before sending them off to enrich someone else's life makes them feel even more special as their journey is not yet over. Changing my mindset has been a huge hurdle to get over but now that I have I am so grateful. Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement, they mean more than you will ever know! My "fantasy self" is the little girl part that gets extremely active when I am anxious or stressed (and she has been in overdrive since the onset of Covid-19). My mother died suddenly when I was five years old, in 1969, leaving my father with five children under the age of ten. Fifty years ago the understanding of what children need to process and move through grief was a mere shadow of what experts know today. My PTSD has kept me stuck in an inner world where catastrophe is right around the corner, and my possessions become the tangible replacements for my mother's love and the comfort and security I felt when she was with me.

Having been in the minimalist mindset, I find myself packing only two or three personal items. It is SO easy to pack (and unpack) and I haven't missed a single "just in case" item! Thanks for spreading your ideas!

I feel the exact same way! And whatever comes, we will keep doing what we have always been doing and strive to do it a little better every day.
