My rule of thumb: If I have to alter a clothing item to make it what I want it to be, I’m not getting the item. A new item should work for me; I shouldn’t have to work even more to make it the right thing.
I'm paraphrasing, but in a video a few months ago she said that we shouldn't have to fit our clothes, but that our clothes should fit us. So true. I've lost count of how many clothing items I've bought thinking that if I just lost 5-20 pounds, they'd look great.
Yes! The Daily Conossoir talks about this. Minimalism is actually a life of luxury because you love everything around you and you make sure you love what you bring in!
I love how relatable you are. I love that you talk about things in such a way that really speaks to so many people. You have taught me so many things that I have never understood before and have changed my life. At 41 years old, I finally feel like I can be in control of my stuff rather than my stuff be in control of me. I truly believe God led me to you.
The timing of this couldn’t have been more perfect! I have lost 50 pounds in the last year, which has made purging my clothes almost a no brainer! However, I have so few clothes that fit, that I feel almost desperate to bring some things into my wardrobe…. Today I bought 2 pr of pants, 2 shirts and 2 jackets at Costco. Tried them on at home and was partly disappointed in the 2 shirts and 1 jacket. I’ve been stewing over them for 3 hours!! You just helped me make up my mind to return them!! I WILL find new shirts that I like!! I WiILL! 😁
congrats on your weight loss (I hope?) and yes, after such a journey, your new body deserves new clothes that fit properly, even if it is just a few pieces to get you started and help bridge the gap while you learn what you like the look/feel of in your "new you" frame :)
@Robin Batts exactly! Last year I lost 85 lbs, and tossy tossy was easy! But now, it's hard to find clothes that fit! Literally, in my closet are jeans ranging from size 12 to size 1, & they all fit pretty much the same. The 12 are a little big and the 1's are snug (can be zipped easy but show too much shape for an old lady 🤣😂) But everything in-between fits almost identical lol 🤣😆
@@mrsducky3428 congratulations!! I honestly did struggle a little to get rid of some of my larger sized favorites…. So many “what ifs”…. But then I just did it!! No looking back!
I have also lost 50 pounds. I did go to the trouble of taking in a few tops I love, and I am so glad I did! However, I let most go. I’ve had a pretty minimal summer wardrobe that was enough. (I just have to plan ahead so I have clothes clean.)
I really love the clothing videos. After each one I think to myself: “Wow! How come I never thought of that.” At first I was a little nervous that people would wonder why I wear the same things all the time. Then I changed my thinking and wanted others to do the same thing. Why in the world did I ever wear clothes that I feel uncomfortable in! 🤦🏻♀️ Thank you for helping the rest of us to build up that “lower your inventory muscle.” 💪
Over the years, I have found that the few people who actually notice it's the same and bother to comment are super insecure themselves. An easy reply: "oh this is my uniform" 😂
I could write a book on what has saved me thousands, I made a science of it during repayment years of medical school loans. But my current tip for saving thousands is to stay off eBay, Instagram and all the other shopping sites and instead choose to watch sites like Dawn's for how to get to the core of what you use and love and how to take in what a sense of sufficiency feels like which can really obliterate either temptation or unconscious spending. Another tip is to take up a passion that does not have to be expensive to master (for me, it's knitting) and to spend time taking walks to tap into self-reflection and gratitude
When I look at your kitchen or your bathroom..I don't get that reaction "Oh she's roughing it!" or "You've gotten rid of things that make life good!" I get a sense of calm rather than chaos, and something to aspire to! Good for you for sticking to your own convictions when dealing with the comments or convictions of others! 💗🙏🌺
I love this! When I shop I also look at the care instructions. If it’s dry clean or hand wash I usually say no. It’s more to maintain and I won’t put the time in.
Most of time “Dry Clean Only” can be washed, unless the fabric is really delicate. I’ve purchased many dry clean only garments at resale shops & every one of them made it through the hot wash just fine. If I were concerned , I’d look up the fabric content first.
When I first heard you introduce this question + the question, "Would I buy this again?"....both of these questions have struck me to the core. It has been utterly life changing within mine + my family's world! These two questions have poured over not into just consumption + decluttering but into relationships, sports, experiences and so forth. It has taught us true intention + value; along with peace + confidence. Thank you so , SO much! Just LOVE your beautiful face + spirit!
I was actually going to comment that the first blouse was not my favorite, so I’m glad you decided against it. The Michael Kors top and the short-sleeved blouse at the end were the best. I sometimes talk myself into keeping things I don’t love because I hate shopping and just want it to be over 😂😂
i was going to comment (before watching the whole video. lol. oops) that the blue top (or others that are kind of boxy or shapeless/frumpy) can often look better with a half tuck/side tuck... but I'm glad Dawn chose what she did, and her thought process when considering each piece
I use the concept "full body yes" when thinking in terms of a "definitely yes." A full body yes allows me to FEEL the answer to the question to keep or let go. The body is an honest communication tool. It's where intuition, our inner teacher, resides, and it knows what we really want... peace of mind 🙏
This is so true and such great advice also! I had 3 weddings this summer and needed a dress. I got a purple flowery dress that I thought I loved. It was cute. But it was a little snug in the top so my neighbor moved the button. But then I was tugging at it all night because it was a little too low and didn’t fit quite right. Even though I didn’t want to buy another dress and I couldn’t return the first one, I did find an all black one just to “try.” The moment I put it on I was like “YES! OMG! I love it!” It fit perfect. I felt great. I got a lot of compliments too. (Bonus.) And it has pockets! Lol. They were both around $35, so it didn’t totally break the bank. I’m sad I wasted the money on the purple dress. I’ll pass it on and hopefully someone else will fall in love with it. But I’m super thrilled I found the black one. I’ll hold on to this one for a while. 😊
I completely understand. I call it "going with my gut" because my brain and my heart often tell me very different things, yet my gut kind of divides the difference and tells me the reality that I need to know.
That question has helped me so much too. If it's not, heck ya! Then it's a no. The other question that has helped me cut my excessive spending is, "How have I managed to get by without this so far?" If what I was using before is used up, broken, ruined, etc. and there's nothing else on hand to put in its place to keep me functioning, then it's a legitimate need. Otherwise, it's a want and it's time to look at my budget, values, and priorities and see if it's time to add to my wants collection.
Everything you said was so relatable - it’s wild how immediately emotionally invested we get in something we “like” working as soon as we try it on. I have definitely found the “if it’s not a YES then it’s a no” works in every aspect of my life, but also just repeating to myself like “hey there’s thousands of other shirts and this one isn’t for you and that’s ok, you’ll find a perfect shirt and have more money for it when you do”.
yes! I have adopted the "if it is not a YES, then it's a NO" mantra, and apply it to my decluttering journey, as well as any time I am shopping. I am teaching two of my friends this concept as well, since they both have very small living spaces and very big $$ spending habits.
Yeah! I have to tell myself that there will always be new clothes made that I like, lol. It’s just for some reason, I have trouble finding the item I’m looking for when I need it. So then I’ll spend money on something else only to discover the item I was looking for has come out in stores. When she was saying all the things that ran through her head, I was like that is so me; it’s crazy making! Sometimes I’ll do that when trying to just choose a cereal! But now I’m going to use this question in every area of my life. ❤️
I was trying on jeans at Eden Prairie Center a few weeks ago and I was hemming and hawing over whether or not I could make them work. From the deep recesses of my mind I recalled you talking about this question. Immediately, I knew they were not a definite yes and I walked away! Love that you practically walked us through this concept looking at specific items today. I appreciate all you do, Dawn!
I really like how she mentioned sizing up or down in her determinations. I know a lot of women who are totally set on their size. If they wear a size 6 they would never consider sizing up to an 8 because they don't want to see that number on the tag. Being open to different sizes and not worrying about the number on the tag is such a freeing way of thinking and really helps me to find clothes.
Omergosh yes! Clothes even in the same size can end up different sizes after cutting the material sewing it etc. I worked in the mens department of a large department store and we had to measure every pair of pants we sold to make sure it was true to size. In the same brand and style a 32" waist would measure anywhere from a 28 to 36!! Plus foreign countries have smaller bodies and their XXL fits Americans like a Medium. So yeah insisting on one size on the label when you buy clothes is just asking for disappointments.
@@briannab5296I ordered some cute (but cheap) clothes from China. I sized up because I knew they run small. When I opened the package I swear I thought they were clothes for children they were so tiny! 🤣
I have your voice in my head when I go clothes shopping, reminding me that if I don't love it in the shop, I won't love it at home and if it isn't a definite yes, then it's a no. I hate shopping and am inclined to do a grab and run, settling for whatever will do the job, regardless of whether it looks the best. I am learning to put a little more value on myself thanks to your videos because they help me have clear questions and boundaries to focus on besides the anxiety that often cripples me in a wide range of situations. Thank you ❤️
I love the idea of a definite yes. This will save our family so much money in the future. You could apply this concept to so much more than clothing. Thank you for your perspective and wisdom....🍁🍂
I'm from the era when sewing was fun. I've actually bought clothing from thrift stores to use the fabric to make another garment. In over 50 years I have never bought an item new other than bras or swimwear. 🤗👍🥳
That is so aspirational! One of my motivations for minimalism is to reduce my environmental impact so I really respect your ability to reuse materials.
I went through this trying to find a pair of jeans that fit well. I found myself trying to talk me into compromising in the dressing room, because I hate trying on clothes. But I finally realized that it's worth trying on as many as it takes to find a brand that fits me well and I feel good about wearing. Otherwise they will just sit in the drawer anyway.
yes, exactly! I have always struggled to find "the right fit" in pants/jeans, and had just given in to the belief that I would ALWAYS have to alter them and/or deal with them not fitting properly. So here I am with like 15 pairs of pants that sort of fit, and about another 10-15 that I intended to alter (take in at the waist because I'm curvy, or hem them because I'm short) but guess what. Now the ones that don't fit my waistline are getting donated, and the ones that are too long are getting cut off/cropped (if the cut/style allows - and if not... they're being donated/passed on/ repurposed into crafts like cat/dog toys or hot pads) and several of them have been sitting in the "awaiting alteration" stack so long they don't even come close to fitting me anymore!
With jeans or trousers, when I stumble on a 'definite yes' I buy two of them. It may not sound minimal, but it's saving me time and frustration. Trying on pants is tiresome, and most of the time something is just not right about them.
@@cvdheiden1 I have a really difficult time finding jeans that fit me well. So buying two, if you find ones that fit great, makes perfect sense to me ; )
Thanks to you I’ve donated 100’s of pieces of clothing, shoes, boots, sweaters, coats, scarves, gloves, jewelry, and handbags!!! I now have a very minimal wardrobe and at the start and end of each season I donate what isn’t a 100% YES!!
I’ve heard some people ask “would I cut the tags and wear this out of the store right now?” to remind themselves of this idea, to make sure it’s a yes for right now, not a maybe one day I can make this work… How clothes make you feel is also so important and if you’re tugging and adjusting constantly you’re going to look and feel uncomfortable.
I just saved $50 today using this criteria on a shirt I was considering buying. I liked it but have nothing to wear it with. Plus only white pants would have looked good with it, and I don’t do white pants anymore!
I’ve been taking your advice you had in a previous video that if there’s one thing I don’t like about something, I won’t want to wear it. I used this on my recent shopping trips and took my 6 year old daughter clothes shopping. I would ask her the same thing and I was really surprised to see HER be the one to take initiative and say she didn’t want something. It has been so helpful!
So Dawn, that black dressy see through material was absolutely darling on you. The way it hung at the bottom was so cute on you. I loved it!! So if someone else tells you that it looks the best, is it still a definite no? It was perfect for dressy occasions!! But the question you ask will definitely help me!
Even if someone else says it looks good on you, but you don’t feel good in it, would you likely wear it, or pass over it in your closet? You have to love it and feel good in it or you are simply throwing away your money if it’s never worn. 😉 I’ll accept financial donations if you’re looking to give away money. Lol!
Every time I think I'm done decluttering and have gone as far as I can go, Dawn puts out another video and off I go to my closet and start tossing things into donation boxes.
It's that feeling you get when you try on something that you love. No hesitation, no negotiating with yourself about minor flaws. It's the HECK YES I LOVE THIS feeling that now drives each and every clothing purchase for me. It requires some patience and discipline - especially if you are down to the wire for an specific event etc. (which has happened to me far to many times over the years) - but so worth it in the long run. Go Dawn!!!
Love the two tops you chose! What I would’ve picked too! Right now I’m dealing with a maxi dress I bought thinking I could have it altered. The seamstress didn’t do it right, and it cost me $29! Now I have to take it back and have it altered again. It’s been such a time-suck and a $100 skirt has now become a $130 skirt I still can’t wear. Never again, lol.
I absolutely love your style! As I am now disabled and our income has cut in half; your advice is amazing. I wish I had a friend like you who could help me get all the inventory out of our house so it is easier for me to get around. My husband and I are implementing your advice as we can (our family all lives far away). Thank you!!!!
Just a thought - if you put the word out to your friends or even church family that you could use some help maybe someone would step-up and give you a hand. Good luck - (donna here using husband's computer)
My family has asked me "how many times are you going to purge the same closet?" I guess when they're all a definite yes. That space is definitely my onion.
This just saved me! I've been trying to justify keeping a few smelly items of second-hand camping equipment because I got them for free. Definitely not a YES 😬 and it's so much more relaxing to imagine myself not having to manage them and get my other stuff stinky. I think it's worth the effort to me to try cleaning them, but if that doesn't work, out they go! You're the best, Dawn! Also, I love the tops you chose to keep! Very flattering. :)
I still struggle with the absolutely yes rule as well in clothing 😂🤣 ...so like you in other areas of our home...we've been practicing minimalism for 8 years now and still loving how simple my life has become
This is a great reminder. I'm going to go through my closet this weekend because I know I have tops that I'm like...somehow I can make them work. In the long run..I probably will never wear them. Thank you for this video.
Great tip! Also, if I spend my money on things that are not definite yeses, I will not feel comfortable spending more money when I do find something that is a definite yes.
See, now I LOVE the black top on you! Love the bottom and how flow-y it is, love the sleeves and the curved hemline of the bottom - so flattering to any figure!
Dawn, thanks to you, understand exactly what you mean! The first video I found was when you were sorting through your son’s clothes asking, ‘how many pants, shirts, etc. do you need?’ It clicked and I kept watching and started decluttering. You’ve given your words of wisdom and coached me on and I’m 95% there. (Do any of us ever totally get there?) It is SO wonderful to have an uncluttered home that feels peaceful. It’s so quick to pick up and make it look presentable. And nothing in my closet is taunting me :-). Thank you!
I'm short also and laughed out loud when you held up the bell sleeves. I've tried to like them, but they are just not practical and always a little too long. You are such and inspiration to make good choices and have saved me so much money on clothing over the years. Blessings on your day!
Thank you for “permission “ to donate/toss some of my winter clothes and get a few new pieces. You may not have meant that to be the message but when i think of swapping summer for winter (South Dakota) I get discouraged because the things in my winter tub have gone from being old favorites to Blah. I plan to make a summer donate box when I swap clothes while I still remember which pieces i never wore. Love your videos, you make my day!
I used this trick today. Not only did it save me a ton of money, it saved me time too! I didn't waste any time trying things on that I might have in the past.
I appreciate your honesty and thoughts to consider; I do the same thing. I really like what you said in another video about: " would I wear this 3x in a week". Wow, that helped me in my "capsuling".
I’ve been following you for a few years now and because of that, you’re the voice in my head when trying to decide to buy or not. I’ve come to a place where if I do not LOVE it, it has no place in my home. Thank you for that!
Dawn is definitely the voice in my head too! When I'm tidying up the house for the 10th time, I can hear her say "do you want to keep dealing with xyz?" "If you throw it out or donate it right now you will never have to pick it up again." "Can it be replaced for under 20 bucks?" "Do you love this item enough to keep picking it up?" Haha Dawn has helped me move through clutter faster and I couldn't be more grateful. ~Anna~
@@joshuaboehlke405 I soooo can relate and agree! Her channel has come along way from the first videos and I’m so happy to watch her success! I ask myself those same questions. Thanks for the comment. 🤗
You are soooooo spot on with that one question! I was laughing along with you since I ask/bargain with myself regarding the exact same crazy questions about clothes when I’m shopping. Thank you for this video!
I think the reason we try to 'make something work' is because there is a high, a thrill we get from purchasing something new. We want that 'high' so we try to justify keeping it. Then 2 years later (when we've never worn it) the high has past, and we just need to get it gone.
That really is a very helpful question. Is it a definite yes? That could apply to all areas of your life. It was helpful about the overthinking part too. I tend to think that way as well where saying well maybe I could do this maybe I could hem it or something. Thanks Dawn.
I overthink. Sometimes there are too many choices, which can make decisions hard. Studies have shown that too many options can result in a lot of anxiety.
@@dale3404 I think this is a great idea. Why would I not love myself enough to only have what really works for me. I'm in a newly accepted season in my life. I'm an elderly senior now. I want to use my time and energy doing the really important things, not have to deal with making do or managing inventory that is actually not useful to me.
Where have you been all my life. I’m 68 and have just moved to a new province here in Canada and you have truly been a salvation for us. We have donated 20 boxes of “stuff” and I have twiddled my wardrobe to just a few pieces. After all we’re retired. We don’t need much lol. Ty and keep the videos coming
I could relate and loved you walking through all the things that popped up in your brain! As a mom with 5 little kids I can sometimes feel like “I don’t know when I will get time to even come look again/ever find things that fit/etc” and I am working against that mentality - I LOVED your answer! ❤️🙌 Thanks for bringing your perspective and attitude and “don’t put so much pressure” mindset too!
Do I love it? Really is the best possible question for clothes. So much I have wasted in the past, but no more. Thank you so much for sharing that you do buy just just a few new items each season. This makes me happy!
My mom always taught me that if I don’t love it in the dressing room, I’m not going to come home and love it and want to wear it. So if I don’t absolutely love it when I first put it on, it’s a no. Thanks for this video!
The cream sweater looked great on you. And your definate "yes" question reminds me of the other minimalist that recommends "do you love it?" I have found that to be a great one too to help.
Amen to that. I end up saying no to a lot of things because of that bottom thing and no waist definition. The right things will come along at the right time.
I've been watching Chi Li from petite dressing and it has really helped teach me how to shop for myself so I don't get frustrated or waste my money and helps me make wiser decisions for my wardrobe
Remembering all the times I've sorted through things looking for the "golden" and purging the "rust". Making the distinction BEFORE bringing something new into the house makes soonoo much sense.
Dawn. Confession. When I saw that blue Lucky Brand shirt on the hanger, my first reaction was to pause the video and leave for Marshalls. I KID YOU NOT!! Then, I remembered that I promised myself from here on out to only buy clothing that was ethical or second hand, of superior quality so that it will last, that I love, AND that is "French inspired". Those are my criteria. I definitely had to check myself. It was hard. Cute tops btw. Leslie
I totally fall into the trap of “I could make this work.” Totally a waste of time and money… and energy! Love, love, love the “Is this a definite yes?” approach so much better!!! 🎉 Thank you!!!
I love this video so much! Even though I'm doing so much better than I used to, something about you trying them on and explaining why there weren't a definite yes made me truly "get it". Even to the point I think I can finally declutter those clothes that I "can make work" and just keeps the one that I truly love. Thank you!
Dawn, I look forward to your posts. I love to peek into your life and learn how to have less inventory . Thank you all for sharing your lives. Ps I’m 62. Never to old to learn
I've been applying the definite yes to my purchases as well. Otherwise I end up with a lot of maybe in my closet. I just had a garage sale and the clothing that didn't sell went to a local charity immediately ! I feel lighter 😊 and happier.
I hated to spend the $7 or so Land's End charges for a return, until I changed my thinking to it's better to spend the $7 than to lose the $60 entirely when I know the items aren't a definite yes!
I like llbean because I have their credit card and that makes all shipping and returns free. I sometimes order two different sizes of the same thing to see what fits best.
I love that you are saying " oh I could do ...to it and it would be perfect". I have caught myself saying this and then thinking- I'm just making more work for myself.
Such great advice Dawn!! My problem is I am 4' 6" tall. I have struggled all my life finding clothes that fit. I cant really even find someone (an adult) that is my size to get hand me downs from. So I often have to buy pieces that almost fit. And in a way I am settling! But I am so short/ petite its just hard to find things that fit me well! I can get a way with the children's department to a point but there's a lot that has rainbows and sparkles on them so they look more kiddish than I want them to. If anyone has any ideas of where I can shop please let me know!! If I could afford my own taylor to make me clothes I would!! But again I love this concept Dawn!!! Such a great way to have a perfect wardrobe!!!!
Yes - Yes - Yes - all those crazy thoughts go through our brains all the time!!! I like your question - similar to the Marie Kondo “Does this spark joy?”
Similar to your question, my mom told me to ask yourself, “Do you love it with all your heart?” If the answer is “no,” don’t buy it! Easy peasy! Welll…most of the time! 😉
It's kind of like consent - it has to be an enthusiastic yes, otherwise it's a no! My decision making phrase is that it has to be a LOVE, LOVE, LOVE (yes... at least 3 loves) for it to be a yes. And YES - I try to talk myself into clothes using so many of those questions! The struggle is real! Also, having started to get back into sewing my own clothes, I can tell you that mass produced fashion is definitely not made to fit every body, so having to have your clothes altered is definitely not a fail. If you find something you really LOVE-LOVE,LOVE/Is an enthusiastic YES/is a definite YES, but doesn't quite fit right, it may be worth seeking out someone to alter it to fit your body properly (especially if it is a quality piece). I wish I already knew how to alter all my own stuff. I'm trying to get into making my own stuff first, and then maybe I'll figure out all the tips and tricks to alter existing clothing from there. Making my own stuff will definitely keep my inventory lower as I can only do so much sewing...
This is very helpful and supportive, thank you! I find that "When in doubt, don't" rule works well too! Thanks for all that you do!! God Bless You and your family!
Actually it is more time saving and really is wonderful to have things altered that you love but don't fit. I had a stack of clothes that I finally got around to altering by a great seamstress for a nominal fee and now I love them and wear them all the time. It's just a small investment but it is so worth it, especially when it is hard to find things that look and feel great. Historically there were no ready-to-wear clothes and all clothes were made by everyone and they would always fit, there was no frustration of wasting time trying on clothes one after the other, because they were all made to fit. Thank goodness that tailors and seamstresses are around and they are super busy because so many of us just can't wear most read-to-wear clothes. Many well dressed people and even a ton of celebrities have their clothes tailored to fit, because of how conventinet and time saving and how much worth it, it is in the long run. That said the one thing I've seen that makes oversized blouses look great is a French Tuck. You tuck in one side around your hip and it suddenly becomes very flattering.
I agree with the alterations. However the 'hip tuck' only works for people with well shaped hips, stomachs and rear ends. Not so much for the rest of us. 😉
I really really love that black top! I front tuck EVERYTHING! It’s a stylist trick that makes a top flattering. Please don’t discard that top without seeing if the front tuck - especially with that top- works!😊😊😊
As someone who is less than 5', I tend to hang on to my clothes just in case!! Your videos have helped me reduce the number of my clothes and enjoy what I have more. This video is perfect! It either works or it doesn't!!
I lost 35 lbs recently so it was time to go through my closet. Some of my favorite tops when I was larger I wanted to keep cuz they were comfy and pretty. I had a friend over who was the voice of reason. She told me when things were not flattering, where I was just going by how comfy it is. Well naturally the bigger clothes are comfortable. I will miss the pretty close I donated but I'm looking forward to new pretty ones. And I will use your tip Dawn, and ask myself that question. Thanks
My rule of thumb: If I have to alter a clothing item to make it what I want it to be, I’m not getting the item. A new item should work for me; I shouldn’t have to work even more to make it the right thing.
Agreed. Unless the store will alter it for me, it stays there.
I think I am learning that lesson in my old age!
I wish that worked for me! I am only 5’0” have to get lots of items altered.

I'm glad you kept the Michael Kors shirt because it looks amazing on you!
I really love the clothing videos. After each one I think to myself: “Wow! How come I never thought of that.”
At first I was a little nervous that people would wonder why I wear the same things all the time. Then I changed my thinking and wanted others to do the same thing. Why in the world did I ever wear clothes that I feel uncomfortable in! 🤦🏻♀️
Thank you for helping the rest of us to build up that “lower your inventory muscle.” 💪
Over the years, I have found that the few people who actually notice it's the same and bother to comment are super insecure themselves. An easy reply: "oh this is my uniform" 😂
I think people are more concerned with what they’re wearing that what I’m wearing.
My mom would always say “if you don’t know, don’t get it!” It has saved me a lot over the years!
Congrats on paying your student loan! Responsibility at its finest!
Love your tips, thanks for sharing them. Congrats on paying your loans and best wishes to you.
Dawn, you simply have the best tips and perspective! You don’t realize how helpful it is for us! Thank you ❤️
I love this! When I shop I also look at the care instructions. If it’s dry clean or hand wash I usually say no. It’s more to maintain and I won’t put the time in.
I add to that if I have to iron it lol. I even decluttered my ironing board.
I look at the fabric content, too. If a sweater is made of acrylic it's a big no because it pills so badly.
Most of time “Dry Clean Only” can be washed, unless the fabric is really delicate.
I’ve purchased many dry clean only garments at resale shops & every one of them made it through the hot wash just fine. If I were concerned , I’d look up the fabric content first.
My motto with most of my clothes is "If it doesn't go in the washer, it goes in the trash."
@@sunshine3914 I 've washed many dry clean garments as well. I think once you do that you just can't have them dry cleaned.
Thank you so much Angelena, this means more than you know!!! 🥰❤️
Dawn dropping truth bombs that apply not only to clothes shopping but also the dating world. 🙏
@@katiegleaves3792 I was thinking the same thing, tuck the long shirts in so it won’t look frumpy
Yes!
Very very good thoughts
Everything you said was so relatable - it’s wild how immediately emotionally invested we get in something we “like” working as soon as we try it on. I have definitely found the “if it’s not a YES then it’s a no” works in every aspect of my life, but also just repeating to myself like “hey there’s thousands of other shirts and this one isn’t for you and that’s ok, you’ll find a perfect shirt and have more money for it when you do”.
Absolutely true
I used this mentality with boyfriends. Eye opener.
@@ryanjacobson2326 exactly. That's what I meant when I said you could actually use this for all areas of your life it's really life-changing.
Way to go Anne!!! ❤️❤️❤️
GREAT 👍🏻 job!!
@@squisitissima2810 .. i hear ya! 😉
Thank you ❤️
I hit the LIKE button within about 30 seconds of this video! That whole “I could make this work” has been removed from the decision’. Thank you!!!
Yes same! Lol
Because it's so true!😂😂😂
Perfect timing, as always. If it isn’t a definite yes, it’s a no 💕 you are teaching us the word ‘no’ doesn’t have to be a negative experience.
And then you’ll keep decluttering, because some things that were a definite yes won’t be anymore… :-)
Good thinking. Clean rather than discard, time permitting...
No to the 1st blue top. YES to the black top with the sheer sleeves! Really flattering on you!
I still struggle with the absolutely yes rule as well in clothing 😂🤣 ...so like you in other areas of our home...we've been practicing minimalism for 8 years now and still loving how simple my life has become
When I'm feeling overwhelmed after other steps, you're like the little sister of sunshine who gets me over the humps. Thanks Dawn!
The Lucky blue shirt is soooo pretty. Maybe you could find it in a medium. But I do the same thing: If I don’t LOVE it, then it’s a no.
Great advice as I’m getting ready to go shopping for a few fall things that actually fit and that I like!
That is the best question ever. I also refuse to buy anything that’s not good fitting and flattering, but also very comfortable and good quality.
You are soooooo spot on with that one question! I was laughing along with you since I ask/bargain with myself regarding the exact same crazy questions about clothes when I’m shopping. Thank you for this video!
Good call on the striped blue shirt. I got blue pumpkin vibes when you put it on.
I think the reason we try to 'make something work' is because there is a high, a thrill we get from purchasing something new. We want that 'high' so we try to justify keeping it. Then 2 years later (when we've never worn it) the high has past, and we just need to get it gone.
Or a week later 😮😮
Love the cream sweater- it goes with black AND jeans, and dresses up or down. You look beautiful in that color.
@@dale3404 This is so true. Too many choices just makes my head spin.
The 2 tops you decided to keep are definitely more classic, flattering, & youthful.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You are so right and this is so helpful. Just hearing you say it gives me permission to “ let it go” with no guilt.
That's my rule when shopping. You generally love it most in the store, so if you don't love it in the store it's not going to be any better at home.
oh man...I needed to hear this one. Something about a "good deal" can make me settle SO MUCH for things that aren't a definite yes!
People that's NOT Dawn asking you to sign up for some stupid financial app...REPORT THEM!
The cream sweater looked great on you. And your definate "yes" question reminds me of the other minimalist that recommends "do you love it?" I have found that to be a great one too to help.
Really needed this video right now, thank you Dawn!! 💜🍂
Ug…need to look that up….I have a big issue being 5’2 and finding jeans or pants that are too long
She has good advice, plus she's an absolute hoot!
Ahhhhh... you keep inspiring me to to unload layer after layer of un-needed stuff. Thank you! And I love the two tops you chose!
Good morning Minimal Mom. Excellent video. Your frugality and minimalist skills are outstanding.
I love this video so much! Even though I'm doing so much better than I used to, something about you trying them on and explaining why there weren't a definite yes made me truly "get it". Even to the point I think I can finally declutter those clothes that I "can make work" and just keeps the one that I truly love. Thank you!
Dawn,
I look forward to your posts.
I think you'll look great in larger, more defined and more colorful patterns, because you have such bright eyes and smile!
Your videos are so helpful. This is a great question to ask when purchasing or decluttering - I’m going to ask myself this now. Thank you!! X
The V Necks really flatter you. Thanks for being so relatable and sharing your wisdom. It's changing our lives.
I hated to spend the $7 or so Land's End charges for a return, until I changed my thinking to it's better to spend the $7 than to lose the $60 entirely when I know the items aren't a definite yes!
It's definitely a matter of perspective. Paying the return charge and making the effort isn't worth it for a $10 return, but $60? Definitely yes.
I like llbean because I have their credit card and that makes all shipping and returns free. I sometimes order two different sizes of the same thing to see what fits best.
I refuse to shop at a store that charges for returns or a restocking fee. No way.
I love that you are saying " oh I could do ...to it and it would be perfect". I have caught myself saying this and then thinking- I'm just making more work for myself.
I can see this question working for me with everything, and especially clothes. Thanks for your insight, as always.
Love this! I've been practicing "it's cute, but it doesn't need to be in my closet for me to appreciate it"!
I know I am never going to alter anything. So, if that thought comes in my mind it is a definite no.
Clothes are my vice.....I need to declutter for sure...LOL
If you have to talk yourself into it, it's a NO.
I agree the two you kept are the best.
Similar to your question, my mom told me to ask yourself, “Do you love it with all your heart?” If the answer is “no,” don’t buy it! Easy peasy! Welll…most of the time! 😉
The black and white patterned one looked like it fit well on you.
I would be able to retire in comfort if i had my money back from all the crap i should NOT of bought!
As someone who is less than 5', I tend to hang on to my clothes just in case!! Your videos have helped me reduce the number of my clothes and enjoy what I have more. This video is perfect! It either works or it doesn't!!
I like the blue top. Just tuck in the front. It’s the style right now.
Tucking in changes it! 😀
Thanks
