Just ordered a black one! Regarding the price, yes there is an initial difference of £1000 but, with the Hornet, after adding the quick shifter @ £250 AND another £250 for an extra years warranty to match the 8S (Hornet only has 2 years as standard) you are only £500 apart. Also, as long as you get the 8S serviced by Suzuki, you can maintain the warranty up to 7 years / 70k miles!!!

Great choice, Suzuki have done a good job with this bike.

    • @photographerjonathan
      @photographerjonathan ปีที่แล้ว +1

I would never buy an extended warranty. the odds of a Japanese bike having some kind of problem in the first few years are so slim. but if you want help justify the price by adding a warranty into the equation that is up to you. I think the GSX 8s is nice and I don't think it needs justification when buying one. but it is a shame that it's so much more than the Honda Hornet. which is also 10 more hp. but it seems like Honda priced it to sell. and will probably sell allot more than the Suzuki, I was considering buying one of them. until I came across a 2017 Ducati 939 Supersport with 2159 km on it and it looks like new. for less money than the Hornet. and I couldn't be happier with it.

    • @NeilPhelps-p5w
      @NeilPhelps-p5w ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@photographerjonathanI made no mention of buying an extended warranty as I agree with your comments on reliability. The 8S comes with a 3 year warranty and if you have it serviced by Suzuki the warranty continues up to 7 years / 70k miles.

Hi Kate, I rode the Hornet and the S8 back to back 3 weeks ago, while the price difference is an issue I much preferred the S8 to ride, the looks are better too, for me!! I also felt the Hornet's quality was not as good which came as a surprise.. a swing arm that looks like its off a 125. and the frame and subframe joints looked cheap and old fashioned .. bought an S8 in Blue last week!!!

Done just over 1000 miles, fitted heated grips ,a tail tidy, belly pan and seat cowl , love it to bits , quick shifter is a lot better with some miles on it, took off a bit of preload, it pulls like a train from nowhere!! the only issue is I let my wife, who has a Kawasaki Z650 have a go, mistake, she's trading that in for one too!! @@ak-47821

There’s a lot to be said about the quality. I found exactly the same. If you have the money I think 8S is actually better value if you are a person who look at detail.
The Honda missed a few key things for me that I look for.
      - no place to add spools
      - no shock mud flap
      - no oil sight glass
      - unsightly small thin rear tire for it’s class, quicker turn it. Facts are it saves money on the build and makes the turn in more unpredictable.
      - swing arm is very cheap looking
      - the jerky throttle
All of these are deal breakers for me in the end. If you take the Honda for a 20 minute ride and do no further research it honestly feels like a super fun bike. Long term I think most would regret the decision if financially you had a choice. The Honda when looking into detail seems to be predominantly made from the parts bin. That is what seems to be have designed around. Again, still a cracking fun bike.

I've had this bike for roughly a week now and completed just over 400 miles. (I've got it in black).
I love that the power is available at almost any revs in most gears.. it's effortless.
The whole bike feels solid which seems to give it a premium feel.
Completely agree with the comment of not being able to rotate the bike on the side stand! I failed at this today...
I've not experienced the wind issue while at 'motorway speeds'. I'm 5ft11 85kg and have been riding in windy conditions.
The only negative I have so far is that the bike is quiet.. The exhaust sounds good, it's just very muted and you can't hear it at all over 50mph so only really get to enjoy the sounds at lower speeds.
It's difficult to get any customisation done yet, as there aren't many aftermarket options out. Saying that, I've just purchased a tail tidy and I'm waiting for the exhausts to be released.

I agree with everything you said. I have the bike and I’m the same height. I have never had the wind non sturdy steering issue. I’m sure it was the particular bike Kate had. That’s what warranties are for. Definitely don’t doubt what Kate experienced.
Exhaust, I love the standard sound. It has a purposeful sound about it. When you go higher speed you don’t get the droning noise which I very much appreciate. You still hear the air box when giving the throttle a twist. The Hornet has a better sound. But as is, I like not annoying the neighbour and personally not getting attention for the wrong reasons when riding in town. Perfect for me, but completely understand we are all different.

Hi Kate,..I had a test ride on the GSX 8S about a month ago , and in good conditions gave it a good work out for an hour and never found any handling problems at any speeds, just my guess I’m 100kg so perhaps the absence of weight made it a little flighty for you at higher speeds. Secondly in 30 years of riding many bikes , moving a bike I always sit on the thing to move it . Rather do that than making a buffoon of myself getting unbalanced and dropping it 😢. Dave

A few Months ago, I visited a Suzuki Dealership near Portland, and had a chance to sit on an 8s. It fit me like a glove! I have started from Honda 110 CC to Honda VTR250 to Honda CB600F to Ducati Monster 650 to Now Suzuki SV650 Full Power.
I did not like it in the beginning as have always been a Honda or a Ducati fan but I must say that now I do Love my Suzuki SV650 FP.
Have done some modifications to it which made it more awesome like Tail Tidy, RandG Knobs, Side Fairings, Mini Fairing, LED Indicators and a Yoshimura Slip On plus that Special Seat.
I was so looking forward to buy this Bike but I hate most of the Bikes getting more Plasticky at their front which rattles after some time and even a minor drop can mess it up.
By the way, so love your way of speaking. ❤

The twitchy front wheel is mostly the quite bad tyres. Same deal on the hornets that didn't get the Michelin, or even worse, the new honda rebel 1100. Some say Inflation to 2.8-2.9 bar helped quite a bit.
But, a steering dampener is something to add to the 8s and the hornet.

Great review, thanks. Regards the weaving, as someone has already said, maybe that bodywork around the front end has some effect. Also, as you will know, tyre pressures can have an effect too, but I'm sure you checked those!. Also, I think to some extent it's a naked bike thing, as they don't tend to put a lot of weight over the front. If it's any consolation, my Guzzi V7 feels very flighty at the front when it's windy, even moderately windy...

Hello Kate. I appreciated watching Your review. I have one in blue, and have covered nearly 1000 mls upon it. I have ridden it in all weathers, including fairly high wind. An interesting observation you mentioned. I was in something of rush the other day, and after passing safely around other motor vehicles I increased my road speed further when at a certain point the machine felt a little unstable, it wasn't at all pleasant. The first occasion it ever felt anything but so sure footed, I should add it was gusting quite strongly at the time, and this road is known for occasional strong side wind. Interesting watching and listening to you ride there. I feel there's a potential issue with my model, in that it will not ride seemingly smoothly down in the revs as you were demonstrating clearly here. I believe it could possibly be balance chain tension, ie slack. The engine also seems to noticeably make a clicking noise when picking up revs from around 3000rpm. I mentioned this at dealer first service, but felt it was ignored. Would love some info on possible balance chain adjustment procedure if any person could help please. Thank You for the great content.

I bought a Hornet before this came out and a few months later still think it was the right decision. I wanted a fun budget middleweight and you can't beat it for value for money. This is a grand more putting it only just under a grand off a street triple. It's all very well saying this has a quick shifter but you can have just as much fun on the Hornet without it if money is tight and add one later. You can't take it off this and get it cheaper. Having said that I do prefer the looks of this but not in white and it badly needs a tail tidy.

@@UsernameKate I think the front or rear instability can come down to rider position and weight balance, I'm significantly taller and heavier than you so I sit differently on the bike distributing my weight differently - that's just a theory, because the feeling you described is identical, feels really like a wrongly inflated tire, but it's not that.

Could be that someone wheelied your test bike and when they slammed it down the ball-race head bearings (if it has them?) made indentations in the bearing track? This, or over-tight steering head bearings could cause the weaving. I enjoyed watching the video. Then I found some TH-cam dyno tests and found they make well under 80 bhp at the wheel, which confirms my suspicions. For what they cost I’d like closer to 85-90 bhp at the wheel. I found myself running out of revs on longer straights very quickly.

Great review, I would say thought the complaint about 'lots of wind' seems... unfair? Any bike this weight is going to suffer in wind - indeed anywhere would tell you that riding in high winds is a bad idea. Pull over and wait for winds to die down if you get caught out in it, otherwise... just don't ride.

I wonder if the current fashion for long ears sticking out besides / in front of forks have anything to do with the weaving. They must become an aerodynamic factor at certain circumstances, like irregular crosswinds. You being light compared to the motorcycle could indeed make that more critical.

PS, having riden both bikes I agree on the Hornet's snatchy throttle. The Hornet also chugs quicker if you let the revs drop towards 2,000. Regrettably the test ride was too short and congested so no sense of cornering stability, etc. Love to hear your thoughts. Also suspension damping comparisons. Loved the GSX. I think the Suzuki naked bikes are windier than others. Somehow they do not get the wind flow as clean as their peers, including Honda. Also looks are challenging for the GSX in my view, but hey bikes are made to be ridden.

got to love the Gore-Tex trousers during those wet days, Have a great pair from Rev'it which have large vents on the thighs allowing a good flow of air inside on the warm days, ugh.... couldn't think of anything worse than wet jeans against my skin, especially with my sensory issues and clothing. Does the TFT dash allows Bluetooth connectivity, is there a Suzuki app for navigation through the screen via mobile like the BMW has?

Not trying to gaslight you, but it sounds like the weaving sensation you experienced on windy days but isn't there otherwise sounds more like sympathetic nervous response to potential danger , its not a nice experience to be on a motorcycle when its windy especially at 80 on a motorway . If it was the bike it would weave regardless of the conditions its being ridden in .

Hornets made in third world asia.. and the fit and finish is shite.
Suzuki is made in japan. If you look at everything the fit and finish is way above the hornet. Plus it has a quick shifter and is a legit all new bike. That's your price difference alone.
Honestly if u figure in the cost of what it takes honda to build the hornet your probably getting overcharged.
Also I drive hiboy van quite a bit. (Ford aluminum unibody) so u get the extreme end of the feeling
on gusty days driving open roads at 70 on dry pavement the wind can make it feel like your driving on ice.
