    I got my E-bike last month (got a second better bike this past July) and am currently selling my car (sold it back in April). BEST decision I've made in a long time! No insurance, no gasoline, lower maintenance/repairs (edited this part for the pedantic person in the comments), no titles and plates, just a reliable bike that can get me to and fro while able to go speeds of nearly 32mph.
    Edit: I also do delivery work on my bike for a living and have no issues with the adjustment. Just had to get some cargo crates and a cargo trailer (the latter for bigger grocery orders or orders that have bulky items).

I'll occasionally use it to commute 25 miles (one way) to my work, charge it there then take it back. Still have my car for when I need to make better time, or if the weather doesn't permit using the ebike, but it's an awesome extra option to have that helps a ton on saving on gas. I almost exclusively use it for doing errands in my town where I only need to travel a couple miles..Meanwhile there's people around me taking massive trucks to stores only a mile away from them, absolutely ridiculous.

    My problem of using this over a car is people stealing them. Even the best locks can be broken in seconds and if your bike is an expensive ebike or even a cheap one it's going to be a target. So it's not going to be something people can generally use unless it's to a work place they can bring their bike inside. Recreation is great but this can't replace a car in most cities. Sucks because I would use this instead of a car if it weren't for that issue.

      Hate when people say this like there isn't a million articles/videos on how to prevent bike theft. As someone who has been biking for 4 years, I've never had my bike stolen. I used to leave my bike outside for hours during work and never had it stolen. I go to the store several times a week and often leave my bike outside for 20+ minutes without issues. There are so many ways to prevent bike theft. For example, it's recommended to used atlast 2 locks. One around the back wheel/frame, and another around the frame. You can also put a bike alarm that sends an alert to your phone when your bike is touched/moved. Another thing you can do is add a tracker under your bike seat or in a bag on your bike so even if some one somehow managing to get past your 2 locks and your alarm system, you can still track them down. There, solved your theft issue. Not that hard lol.

      Not legally. The bike Vegan Gains is riding in this video is not street legal, nor any of the ones he recommends. He acknowledges this in the video indirectly by pointing out that all they can do is fine him, they can't raise his insurance rates or confiscate the video. In North America, the fastest street legal e-bikes go 45 KM/h, and are called "class 3" e-bikes. Regular bike shop e-bikes go 32 KM/h. Last I checked there were 22 states and no provinces that have allowed class 3 e-bikes (sometimes nicknamed "speed bikes"). However, I have reason to believe that British Columbia may be the first province to allow them.

    What a silly and shortsighted thing to say. How is insurance a scam? It's a very straight forward unilateral contract for the purpose of mitigating risk. You're not considering the fact that you could still be sued for bodily injury or property damage if you're at fault or partially at fault in an accident. Any idea of how much that can cost you?

    • @VeganGains
      @VeganGains  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a scam because it's highway robbery. Insurance companies charge far more money than they need to because they take advantage of the fact that so many people need a car. I understand why insurance is important but they get away with absolutely insane prices. I was quoted $10,000 for insurance per year for a 2003 suzuki GSXR which only costs $3,000.

    • @jimmytwotimes4782
      @jimmytwotimes4782 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vegan Gains , if you understood insurance, you’d mention more than the first party coverage for how your premium is calculated. The bulk of your premium is for liability coverage, not the value of your bike. You’re the primary risk that a company insures. You’ll wish you had it if you’re found to be at fault in an accident, especially if someone is injured.

    • @jimmytwotimes4782
      @jimmytwotimes4782 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vegan Gains that being said, that’s a damn high price to pay. I live in the US and I haven’t owned a bike so I don’t know much about those premiums. My car insurance is around 1500 a year. Maybe the underwriters watch your videos where you constantly fail to yield the right of way weaving in and out of stopped or slow moving traffic. That could be what it is.

    E-bikes are pretty good. I have built mine and i'm happy with that. BUT, if the e-bike is more than 250w (or more than 25km/ph), you have to put a number plate on it, means road tax, also insurance and in some countries you have to wear a motorcycle helmet and of course need a license. In other words, an e-bike which is quite fast and quite powerful, it's actually a moped, at least in Europe, which means you have to pay a similar amount as if you get a normal engine powered moped.
    A very good e-bike (eg Stromer ST5) costs around $10,000. My moped from 80's, brand new, costed me only $300 in '00s, means i can buy 33 mopeds like this for the price of a Stromer! The moped is also more powerful, faster and with tons of range (8 litres for around 600kms). Brakes, stability, frame, geometry are better too. Also comfort, as the seat is way more comfortable and for two, plus the suspension, the racks etc.
    So, my question is: why someone has to pay that big amount of money for an e-bike, which is actually a moped (with road tax, insurance, helmet, etc as any other moped), while he can get a real moped for 1/33th of the price with everything on it and everything better, and also can get a normal e-bike (with speed not more 25kms) for everyday exercise?
    P.S: I still use my moped after 20 years, still in very good shape, only 1lt of oil every year ($10-12), also 1.5 lt of mix oil ($9-10) and around 8-10 times fill up the gas tank (around $100). Means around $120 a year. I'm not sure how much the cost of charging the e-bike if i have to charge it everyday for a year, but a battery probably needs a replacement every 2-3 years if you use the bike in daily basis and a good e-bike battery costs more than $600 (Stromer's battery more than $1100). So, it seems like not the best solution.

      I wouldn't take a job if a car was required for it! :) I agree, other than I recommend pedal assist e-bikes as that way you can choose how much of the power comes from you and how much comes from the motor, while getting much longer range than throttle-equipped e-bikes.

    Hey VG I was wondering about your opinion on Effective Altruism. How do you feel about working for large sums of money to donate to charities providing nets to children with Malaria. Is effective altruism something that interests you?

    Hell yeah bro I’m selling my car and buying one after this summer. Only downside is I live in Buffalo, so will probably need public transportation in the winter

      I hope you invest in a good lock and some sort of tracker cos you won’t be able to park this like a car or even an ordinary motorbike.

      You don't need public transportation. People regularly ride in the rain and snow, as low as -30 degrees.

    When I thought you couldn’t get hotter. Like I’ve seen your other ebike vids and I agree with everything you say.. I just can’t get over how practical, intelligent, articulate and funny you are while also being so physically attractive. Bravo 😭🙌🏽🙏🏽❤️ I actually drive a Mazda 3 right now and I pay 400 in car payments a month, 300 for gas and ready... 474 for insurance because I have a couple of dumb tickets. If I didn’t have this thing leased I’d have an Ebike by now but you legit convinced me this Cyron is a great investment so I’m going to work extra hours and then sell the car. It’s literally a waste of money 😩 not to mention I do my oil changes at Mr. Lube for 89 bucks a pop for synthetic oil. And I just changed my spark plugs for 200 and my air filter for 50. Ebikes are the future. You’re the future Richard 😀

    As cool as this is I kinda need a car, 3 kids and camping would be hard with an e-bike lol. However having one on the side I would be up for it.

      Insurance and rego though with a car is outrageous in Australia too. What a rort but is needed as there are so many lunatic drivers on the road and that don't even know how to drive properly, grr!

      Legally? No.
      But no one cares if you are being safe.
      If you constantly hit people, you are going to have an issue.

    I ride an ebike in Sydney, australia. But you are only legally allowed to have a 250w motor on it. If you have more than a 250w motor it is technically classed as an unregistered motorbike. But that being said, the streets are flooded with people riding 1000w and 2000w bikes and the police don't care unless you are breaking road rules and stuff. But recently some guy was riding an ebike and killed a person and he is facing jail time because the bike was 500w www.bicyclenetwork.com.au/newsroom/2019/01/31/fake-e-bike-unmasked-in-pedestrian-death/

      Then park your car in the spring, and re-insure it in the autumn, and save money all summer.

    Hey man, I saw this video a few years ago before I bought my first ebike and it made me fall in love with the Sur Ron. Now i have one of my own because of your mention. It's the love of my life and I just want to say thanks for introducing me to this!

      I do have to say that there are some ongoing maintenance stuff with my bikes. You have to buy tools and new tires/tubes etc, plus you need to buy full gear to be safe. And the downside is that I have to make smaller trips to the grocery store. That's the only real inconvenience.
