    Becky ... I 💞 you!!! I have had my SnC for a year, but haven’t been able to figure out how to do this. I adore McKenna Ryan art quilts, but there are so many intricate pieces that my old hands just can’t do all the cutting, hence the Scan and Cut. This video was perfectly detailed. I hope you do more of these. There is a definite dearth of good SnC informational videos out there specifically geared toward fabrics.

    Sounds like it will work like a charm but apparently just writing you is helpful. I figured out with the online version that hitting the projects button at the upper right of the page acts as a refresh and suddenly all the scans I’d made this morning are there. I am able to add the scans together to build that owl so I think I’m on my way.
    If I’d watched your Simply Applique videos earlier I would have known Simply Applique and BES4 were related. I’m still searching for manuals for all this. It would be so much faster than 45 wrong attempts to figure something out, accidentally finding the answer and then not remembering two days later what you did.
    Thank you for your extremely quick response and thank you for your service. Welcome to retirement. I can’t imagine how much you’ll be doing now that you’re retired considering how much you did prior.

      I guess you could. But then you wouldn't have a low tack mat (if that matters to you). Since I never use the low tack mat and I have a scanning mat, it basically is a back up mat for me for fabric cutting should I ever need it.

  • @cherylpalian3254

    Becky I know you have the top of the line scan & cut. I was looking at the one you recommended. Does it work the same way yours does or should I look for and upscale model. I’ve never used one before. Also I have fabric for tons of the snowballs you made. Will I need a different cutter for them? Thank you for your help and all you teach us

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The model I recommended works just fine. The only difference is that it doesn't come with the low tack mat and it can't scan a 24" mat (however it will cut on a 24" mat). Also, the 125 doesn't come with the gold-topped thin fabric blade and it can be purchased separately if you want one, however the regular blade will work just as well. Here's a great website to see the difference between them. I got a great deal on mine coupled with another purchase which is why I got this model but if not, I'd of gotten the 125 myself. www.alandacraft.com/2018/09/21/scanncut-sdx125-vs-sdx225-comparison-whats-the-difference/

    Omg what a great “just in time” video! Looks like I’ll be dragging my CM350 ScanNCut out again😉. I started machine embroidery and “free motion” embroidery and a this will be a game changer for all the appliqué items in my portfolio! I abandoned it when I got my 2 Cricut Explore and my Maker machines, but there are just some things that my ScanNCut was just better at. Thanks so much for a straight forward tutorial. It gave me a quick refresher of the features too. Just a couple questions: how do you determine the best blade depth / pressure for each fabric choice on the older machines? Can you mix fabric types on the same mat ex: cotton, felt, linen, vinyl, or best to run each individually? Thanks again💕

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the CM350/650, I'd stick to one fabric type per cutting run. On the 350/650, the best way is to run a test using the circle shape. I usually made the fabric about an inch taller than needed and I'd run as many tests in a row until it cut cleanly. Then I'd go ahead and cut the shapes out.

    Love Love Love your videos, or maybe its just your voice. Seriously, have been wanting a cutting machine for a while, but with so many on the market, makes it very confusing to select one brand over another. Do you have any experience with other machines? Can you advise which Brother you have in that regard? I've noticed that a lot of designs and in the hoop projects now include a SVG file with the designs. Makes it a lot simpler. Enjoy retirement and stay safe.

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have had a Silhouette in the past and sold it because it didn't work well for my needs with paper applique patterns for quilting. The machine you want will depend on what you want to do with it the most. A Silhouette or a Cricut are great if you just use it for buying SVGs off the web like for vinyl or paper and cut those. But I'm a quilter and many of the applique patterns I have are paper patterns you get in a quilt store. I don't care for cutting out applique pieces so I prefer the Brother SNC because it is the only cutting machine with the ability to scan the paper applique pattern in and then cut those pieces out. Yes, it is more expensive than the others, but it's definitely worth the money IMO so I don't have to trace and cut the pieces. As far as which model, I do a lot of applique and I cut many pieces at one time so I want one that will scan a 24" mat. All of the SNC models will cut on a 24" mat, but only certain models will scan a 24" mat. I don't care much for the models with Disney characters in them because I don't have a need for Disney. My current machine is the SDX225. If you're shopping, recommend you call Allbrands.com Hope that helps!

    Becky - Thank you for all the tutorials you’re doing. I have been frustrated all day trying to separate the parts of one of the owls in the Animal Parade ‘Whoo Dat?’ quilt. The parts overlapped, not like the distinct center of your flower (wings partially over bodies, etc?). I tried to trace the parts of the raccoon quilt in Animal Parade 2 a few months ago, then scanned them in to the scan n cut and my lines look crazy wobbly once they are transferred to Canvas Workspace. It took hours to smooth them out so I’d rather not try tracing again. Plus I wouldn’t have achieved the efficiencies I bought the Scan N Cut to achieve. Do you have suggestions or could you please do a tutorial on separating more intricate designs?
    I bought the suite of BES4 software rather than Simply Appliqué so I’ll have to figure that out on my own in order to program the appliqué embroidery once I get those owls cut out.

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try making multiple copies of the same pattern page and then only cut out the shape you want on each page and do it every carefully so you get a definite black outline on the shape. It doesn't have to be exactly on the edge of the shape - in fact, it may be better if you're able to cut within a solid black line if possible. Then scan those individual pieces into the SNC. Group them so they make a cohesive design in a single hooping when using the BES4 to create the applique. Simply Applique is a module from inside BES4 so the instructions in my videos to import the .fcm file, move them around, rename, and turn into an applique should apply. I'm also getting BES4 (came with my new 10 needle) and I'm interested to see if the "Remove Underlying Stitches" feature works better in the full version of BES4. In Simply Applique, it's hit or miss. Please reply back, I'd love to know if my multiple copies suggestion worked. :-) Have fun!

    • @sewingmamawyo1281
      @sewingmamawyo1281 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uggh. At it’s simplest level your suggestion worked perfectly. However, I feel like I’m doomed to disaster with Canvas Workspace. I opened an online version on my Mac since there is no Mac version to download. Earlier, I had downloaded the PC version to the PC I’m borrowing from my daughter as the BES4 software only runs on a PC (which I don’t feel very adept at) and it seems like downloading from the Scan N Cut requires the intermediate step of Canvas Workspace. I cannot figure out how to create a project on the PC version so I can add each set of pieces to create the full owl. In the online version, the scans I made this morning are MIA and I can’t figure out how to search for them if they don’t magically appear under my projects. Scans done months ago for the raccoons are there. I don’t remember if I did something differently then. Do you know of a comprehensive manual that might address both versions of Canvas?

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sewingmamawyo1281 If you take a look at the last episode where we did the Warmest Wishes sew-along, I showed how to save designs in Canvas. th-cam.com/video/MoT1LVP2xa0/w-d-xo.html However, you might just try saving the designs to your machine where Simply Applique is operating. Create a folder for your project and use a USB to transfer the .fcm files from the SNC in the folder for the shapes to your computer. Save the shapes individually if necessary. Then put them together in Simply Applique. For instance, open a new screen in SA and File/Import .fcm/ and go grab the owl body. Do not convert to applique yet. Then open another screen project tab (New) and do the same for File/Import .fcm/ and grab the head. Then right click on the head and Copy. Jump over to the tab with the body and right click Paste. That will add the new design piece to the first tab. Continue to do that until your owl is built.

    Question; it depends on the file extension whether or not you have layers. Have you taken the pen files, they have layers, into a program like paint and resave it to a jpeg file it will flatten your files. Would that not clean up all the crap from the file?

      Well, just goes to show you that I didn't read the directions. :-) I always use heat n bond lite with the gold topped thin fabric cutting blade with no problems. Also, the auto-depth feature works the same. Auto-depth happens in the head that holds the blade vs. on the blade itself.

      You might try outlining the images (make a copy if you don't want to write on the original) with a dark Sharpie. The SNC sees what we can't and can make odd scans. Making a definitive line or shape with a Sharpie can make all the difference.

      Once you scan the image, you can go into Edit on the SNC and change the size of it there to your heart's content. If you have multiple pieces in an image (like eyes in a face) then after resizing, you can separate the images. You can also upload images from your computer into the Brother Canvas Cloud and resize there. Lots of options. :)

      I think you can do it too. I don't see why not. You can send svgs made by the Cricut up to the Canvas cloud and then be able to download the .fcm to use with Simply Applique. The trick is to get that paper pattern into a .svg file.

    I would like to use the blanket stitch on alot of my appliques. Is it a built in stitch like the satin stitch?

    I was wondering if I use the Kimberbell embroidery patter s if the scan and cut will work with them.

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you can cut out the Kimberbell SVG files using the SNC. However I recommend you enlarge them just a teeny tiny bit - like 1/16" to no more than 1/8" larger before cutting. For some reason, those Kimberbell svg's come out just a tad too small. Copy and paste them on the mat to create a second set and cut one set just a little bit bigger. If the original is too small after the tack down stitch, put the larger one over and do the tack down again. The satin stitch will then cover all the edges. Good luck!

    At approximately 20.53 it has a pic of it scanning. The screen before shows you pushing the cut button ; mine goes right into cut and I did not get the screen shot of my design and my fabrics to move the design over the fabric? What did I do wrong?

    Do I have to have Office 365 to use simply applique

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not at all. Simply Applique does need to work on a Windows operating system on your local computer (it won't work if you have a Mac), but it is completely separate from Office 365 which is group of apps in the Microsoft cloud for office productivity,

    Becky, will Embrilliance software work with SnC?

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately Embrilliance does not import SVG or FCM files so I think the answer is no. :(

    I have an svg I created in Cricut design space, will this still work if I convert the svg to fcm format?

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It should! You can upload that svg into Canvas and it will convert it to an .fcm file for download. 😊

      I guess I don't understand why the color is important. You'll use whatever fabric or vinyl in any color you like when it's stitched out right?

    Just wondering what the PES reader is on the dx225? Do you use it?

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I haven't used it. What is does, is it takes a .pes applique file and it will cut out the applique part on the fabric. Each .pes applique file has a placement, tack down, and final stitch. You get rid of the ones you don't want like the tack down and final, and it will create a cut file from the placement stitch. It alleviates printing out your embroidery file and scanning it in to create a cut file.
