    I'm a 57 year old female who just started mtb a year ago. I got interested because the trails looked fun, so I bought a used Specialized Hard Rock and fell in love with the whole thing. One of my first trips out I accidentally went a bit airborne when I hit a rock and discovered the fun of jumping! After that I started jumping everything, not very well, not like a kid who's been doing it for years, but like an old woman who felt young again! I have been trying to bunny hop for a year, watching all the videos, especially Seth's and Phil's, and I have finally got the hang of it! I can do it! I just bought a dropper post for the Specialized Crave I now have, and am so addicted. If I can learn to bunny hop, anyone with determination can!

    Mate, I’m almost 44 and have been bombing down mountains since my early 20’s (pre-wife and kids). I knew I always cheated with clip-ins and this Covid-19 lock down has given me the opportunity to rediscover my love for MTB’ing and re-learn some key basic skills. Your earlier video on how to bunny hop with the slow-mo and narrative helped tremendously...after visualising how to do it I am now bunny hopping properly and without clip-ins. Thank you....I’m still working how my wheelies and manuals.

    This video has probably helped me the most in understanding how to bunnyhop. It really shows it from the perspective of a beginner and helps people understand that a small bunnyhop is better then no bunnyhop mainly because when youtubers do a bunnyhop explanation they do huge massive ones that people feel like they have to match for a bunnyhop.
    Thank you Seth

    The wonderful thing I learned about teaching (I started teaching a trade at a college 3 years ago, a trade I have done professionally for 20 years) is that it forces you to find explanations for your techniques that you probably haven't ever had to think about, you just do them. For me, teaching greatly increased my understanding of the subject matter because I had to analyze every piece of a task so that I could express the WHY behind them, instead of just saying--"do it this way". Great video, and I learn something every time I teach a class.

    • @dongarnier5890
      @dongarnier5890 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So true. Everyone learns in a different way because what they hear and how they put the information together in their own head is a very personal thing. Covering every angle, even those that would never occur to the teacher(ie questions asked by students), allows the student to get a lot of information and take from it what works for them. In this case it's their body/bike combo and how they can make physics work for their own situation.

  • @DerEchteAndrej
    @DerEchteAndrej 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like this kind of videos. Here you see real beginners, not professional riders, who actually try to learn it like I do. This motivates me to keep practicing and prevent me from getting discouraged when I don't see any progress. For all people, who 'watch millions of vids an still can't' a specific technique... You already know all about the theory, you don't need more vids. just keep practicing - this is all you need to do.

    Wow Seth I admire you for taking your time to help teach people to bunny hop. You really are a good sport and need more sportsman like you in the community. I wish I knew someone like you when I was younger, I had to learn the long and hard way to bunny hop when I was small and young. Keep up the good work Seth. And I can't believe you're nearly on 100 000 subscribers!

  • @kings17court

    The bunny hop is a very subtle skill that is almost magical. It looks so easy, until you try to do it. When you watch people who have mastered it, working it into their riding, it adds a whole other level of beauty and sophistication. Watching them jump over things and clearing things with no ramp is truly magical.

  • @adamcvanwinkle

    Thanks for the inspiration Seth! I was sitting on my couch watching this video because I felt like I haven't been able to reach the heights that I want to on my mtb. So I went outside with a bunch of 4x4 pieces of fire wood and stacked them up, first three, then four and I even cleared 5! I haven't jumped anything that high on a mtb ever before. I still have a long way to go to match what I used to do on a bmx back in the day and at 30 I probably look ridiculous to my neighbors but today I was 14 again and that was hella fun!

    Seth, looked like an awesome day, and welcome to the life of an instructor. I was taught EDIP as an acronym explain, demonstrate, imitate and practice. So explain first then you'll demonstrate, your students will follow you and imitate and then you leave them practice. good luck and keep up with the clips

  • @ramblingmanslife
    @ramblingmanslife 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's really true, worrying about the feet too much has a negative effect. I'm just starting to practice to get better with bunny hops, and at first it was all english bunny hops. Watched about every TH-cam bunny hop video, and I finally started to get that the front wheel has to come up first. Once you do that, you really start to feel that it's all controlled through the bars, and your feet are mostly just along for the ride. Of course there's a little scoop from your feet, but I think that's the key to teaching a bunny hop, getting people to understand that, so good on ya there!

    i come from a bmx background and im looking into mountain biking. until last week i thought mountain bikers were crazy to go down a mountain like that with no traction on loose dirt and loose rocks, but my views changed when i saw two of my friends going to the beach before our class on their bikes, they asked me if i wanted to join them so i was like yeah. we took a few short cuts through bushes and a small hiking trail and hit a few jumps (messed up sidewalk blocks that formed a triangle and a few mounts form naturally in the trails) when we were riding they were pedaling pretty hard and i was trying to keep up with them and since i was focused on keeping up the whole scary part about loose dirt and rocks slipped my mind. after a few minutes into the trip i realized how much ive been enjoying it. i mean i had never done such a thing on my bmx. this was more fun cause i felt alive, the adrenalin rush made me try out a few bmx tricks while riding through a forest that was the most fun i had on a bike. now im buying a decent bike and gonna try to hit up a few trails. i go to college at upstate ny and its all mountains up here pretty sure there will be tons of trails for me to try out.

    A friend once told me a trick that helps a lot still to this day, what you need to do is look where you want to go rather than what you are doing (he told me to shout looking good to look for good lines) this helps with jumps and bunny hops because when you look at the ground you don't get anywhere near as much height

    I think it's a great thing that you're tweaking your lessons based on the difficulties that other riders are having.
    I'm in IT and always find myself thinking about things like "No internet? why the hell he didn't turn wifi off then on?". It turns out we overlook things that are simple (or even automatic) to us, but not to others...

    maybe different bikes too!!!
    what has worked for me was learning on a DJ bike before applying this technique to my MTB mullet bike..
    a smaller bike for a bigger rider is a much easier tool to handle.. i have worked on my skills in my DJ bike and then once i have a more comprehensive concept of the movement ..
    i move back to my MTB bike, which allows me to develop the muscle memory for things.. a BMX bike is so easy to bail-off when manualig or bunny hopping.
    also for me so far, it seems that you go into a "micro" manual for a second and the movement of the handle bar pull goes with a little pedal push forward to bring that front up more!
    ROW/ANTI-ROW (reference to joy of bike lol..!)

    +Seth's Bike Hacks would you recommend saving up more for a nice bike whether it is hard tail or full suspension or go ahead and buy a cheap full suspension this is considering I don't have a mtb I have a cheap crappy bmx mongoose

    Hey, I have some tips: put some small pieces of wood at the end of a long stick or plank like this |----| .. this will provide something that can be jumped over without it rolling. Then place some squeaky dog toys under this. Let people practice getting a wheel over it separately (front first, then rear, individually) and transition this into a bunny hop.

    Dude totally dig what you did here; I've been watching your videos to tweak my bunnyhop technique but my big problem is nobody rides trail around my area. I live in southeastern SC on an island; not far from you but isolated from other trail riders. Any advice to further develop a "bro network" of dirt guys?

    I know that this might be a stupid question, but do you need front suspension to do the thing where you push down on the handlebars to preload to bring up the front wheel?
