I truly love how many different approaches there are to this technique, literally everyone who can hop has something different and new to share. Great addition to the collective of killer hopping videos!
My favorite channel on TH-cam. Simon , your the easiest guy to listen too on all of TH-cam. Not just MTB. One thing , that high speed hop looked more English than American,
New to the channel over in the UK, watched the manual video, went and practiced and made the most progress that I have in years, the tip on pulling shoulder blades together and down really helped. Really keen to get out and practice bunny hops after this video.
Despite being very comfortable bunny hopping on a BMX bike (and up to 36" last time I could really try, when I didn't have wrist injuries), a long 29er is a different animal, so I went out practicing yesterday using some things in here, and improved a bunch! He mentioned filming yourself, which I second. I did and saw I was shifting my weight much farther back (like for a manual) than I thought I was. The other thing I realized is that with the length and height of a mountain bike, it's almost like you have to wait half a second after pulling the front up to push forward, or else you have a low quick hop instead of a higher, more leisurely one, so also give that a try; it's more like pull-pull-pull-then-push rather than just a quick pull-push.
Load, pull, push. I’ve just taught a fellow fifty+ rider by using this as a spoken mantra. She liked how speaking it out loud at normal talking speed helped her lock on & time doing the three driving elements, she wasn’t worrying about peripheral things. Finally she’s feeling confident to go on one of our local flowing blue/red downhill trails where there’s a need to either bunny hop a dozen water-bars (fun) or crawl over them at slow speed (a drag). Result; thank you👍.
I've been trying to do the bunny hop, but I've been stuck at not been able to lift the back wheel. I think this new combo of steps load, pull and push may actually help. Can't wait to try it.
we need another more in depth video on this. Especially focusing on centered body position and how to lift the wheel with the arms, and the third part about shoving the bike forward. And how this approach contrats with the manual approach where movement of lower body moves farther back for a manual initiation
The way they are hopping in this video is how I naturally do it. I felt like I was wrong because other videos emphasized shifting your weight way back into position for a manual.
Man, Lee McCormack and Alex Bogusky put out the best bunny hop tutorial last week...but this might be even better! mtb coach wars! 😆 great job as always guys super helpful
this tutorial is more of the classic american bunny hop and it can go really really high. Lee puts out a video that gets the job done to hop small things (and easy to learn), but according to him if you want to do big hops, its basically back to this technique
This was the first time that I've bridged the gap between Manual lift and proper Bunny hop lift. My mind couldn't figure out how to shoot back, and then up somehow. Can't wait to try this out.
Thanks for all your support! Wheelies / manuals / bunny hops were definitely the last motion to feel good, but now it's like it never happened. 😁 -Linnea
This is the first video I've seen on this channel and my first reaction before the camera focused on Simon's face was like "Damn this young dude has a deep voice for his age and ripped arms for a mountain biker". I totally like the idea that you don't need to perform a complete manual for the bunny hop. Great video and channel btw!
Super interesting as always. As you probably know, you are proposing a different technique with less steps in it from the 'normal' pre-manual to explosive stand and tuck/scoop back with feet. Looking forward to trying this to see if it gets me higher by pulling up on the bars instead of trying to raise the front with the manual technique first
Surprisingly I've never watched any tutorials online or taken any classes on coaching technique. I prefer to just relay to riders what it feels like to me to ride after years of wanting to be the best rider I can. I actually started coaching before anyone I know of (1996) so there were no classes to take or TH-cam videos to watch. I do the same with yoga and other things I teach. Teaching is easier for me without any memorization of how to do things, or even without knowing how others teach it. Teaching is very personal and internal for me, even though I do share it with a lot of folks. I am often asked about manuals and hops, which you might have noticed I addressed in the video. Thanks for continuing to watch Oliver!
i really appreciate the smaller digestable chunks of video here in TH-cam, i really appreciate your Website fluidride, its really great stuff, but i often fall asleep watching those videos on the site :D.
In the old bmx days..70's & 80s we called the modern day bunny hop a Bronco..because it resembled a bucking bronco. The bunny hop was the English bunny hop of today. Made it a lot easier to distinguish the too.
I am going to get back to do some bunnyhops. I was trying them a year ago but failed, will try with your method. Would love to see one video like this for endos, especially around a switchback.
If you want to learn how to turn on the front wheel for a switchback, we teach that on our website at www.fluidrideonline.com. It's free for 2 weeks so you could see that at on charge. That is the most advanced way to do REALLY tight switchbacks, but is not the fastest in most instances. Linnea and I demonstrated proper switchback form earlier in this series which you can find on this page. hope that helps! -Simon
Nice informative video...I need to go back to practice bunny hops...I managed about 12” two years ago but now I’m having hard time clearing 6” for some reason 🤷🏻♂️
First off dude gives me hope that not only can you ride for a long time, but you can also continue to shred into our later year's. Secondly I need a woman like Linnea! Beautiful and obsessed with Mountain Biking.

Very different. With hopping, there is no jump to do the work for us. Jumping should be MUCH less physical. We have a bunch of tutorials on jumping, so be sure to check those out!
question on initial move: it looks like you are initiating the sequence by compressing, then shoving the bars forward ever so slightly before the leg extension. Is this accurate?
It's all done through the legs. Just stand over your bike with level pedals and enough bend in your knees to put them directly over your toes, then simply apply pressure down and slightly forward into the balls of the feet. (practice by pressing with varying amounts of force). -Simon
You're right! It is! We have winter tours headed there for the 2021/2022 season, check them out at fluidride.com/baja-mexico, maybe I'll see you there! -Kagen, Fluidride Coach
