This is the exact upgrade I made last week. The 2020 M1 16gb, was running perfectly fine, but for $599 the deal was too good to pass up for this M4. Was curious about the actual speed tests, thank you for posting this!
I believe the ssd speeds on the base m4 mini are slower relative to a 512gb and higher disk of the m1. If you up the m4 ssd to a 512gb version or higher, you'll likely see faster speeds from it than the m1, though maybe not by a lot.
According Tomsguide and the Verge, the the 512gd offers a small increase in speed(around 6 percent). However, the pro version increases the SSD performance by around 85 percent. The absurdly priced pro 4TB increases that to basically double of the base model, although that's a $1,200 upgrade to go up to 4TB from 512GB.
My external tb4 drive is 60% faster than the internal ssd in my m4 base model. My m1 MBP is even faster than that. I hope, that apple will work on that issue with a firmware update.

This is the exact upgrade I made today, yay! Also the new design looks great
I have an M! Mac Studio with 32 GB. I got my secretary a new M4, replacing an Intel Mini. The M4 is very snappy. Thanks for the video!
Thanks so much for doing this! I’ve been hoping to see a video like this since the Mac Mini M4 was first announced.
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
