My wife has been using the og regular M1 chip MacBook Air I got her when the thing first came out. Now that she has her full time career, the thing can’t keep up anymore. Definitely gonna surprise her with a M3 Pro MacBook very soon. The work isn’t M4 Pro level but M3 Pro should be more than enough, overkill even.
I had an M2 15 inch MacBook Air, but after thinking about it, I decided to trade it in for a M4 Pro MacBook Pro Base version, I decided to not upgrade the ram or SSD since I had a external drive and 24gb RAM is already really good enough when running multiple applications
A reviewer that finally shows the improvement from the models 99% of people would likely consider an upgrade from. I find it odd how many reviewers compare to the M3 which no sane person would upgrade from yet unless they just had piles of cash sitting around. A more realistic upgrade is going to be those with an M1 or still on Intel Macs. I’m also tired that video editing reviews only ever measure export of a mostly straight cuts only video. Something almost entirely handled by the media engine. It’s important to measure the complex processing tasks because that’s the entire reason why one gets a more powerful machine. So many reviewers claim the M4 is identical to the M1 just based on video export times. That’s a completely wrong perspective and not really providing valid information. This review covers both sides very well. Yeah some tasks may not be much faster but others will be.
The goofy part is that a solid 95% of people running the old M1 Pro will not need any upgrade for a few more years to come. The difference in performance is no *there* yet, and if they did just fine with the old one, there ain't a lot of reason to upgrade. That being said, I will be getting a M4 Pro, to switch from my current Thinkpad. It is time for me to upgrade, and I desire that combination of UNIX OS and well-supported media processing tool. I am sick of dualbooting to balance the lack of support on Linux with the utter jank that Windows is. I think the M4 will be useful to me for years to come, and seeing the M1 Pro, heck even the base M1, going so strong now gives me hope that the M4 Pro won't need a change soon.
@ it’s not that the difference in performance isn’t there yet. It’s more that most people don’t need that difference yet. We all feel our M1 Pro is good enough because in many cases it is. It flies through most video tasks with no problems at all. The stuff we do have to wait for is minimal. Apple silicon has way surpassed the computing needs of most users. Not be fair I feel like that’s true of most graphics cards as well. Even a cheap 3060 still handles HD games very well. We have reached a good enough level with a lot of hardware now. Outside of AI not a lot of computing tasks really need more.
Great video! This is how a video should be! Worth to note is that starting with M2 Pro, you got a much better HDMI port/output. So it that's very very important then skip M1 Pro. As I see it, the more money the time is, at work, then you should pick a as new MBP14 as possible. So if these time savers adds up and will save you a lot of time, then it's worth it. It's honestly not a huge difference between M1 Pro and M4 Pro. Not a game-changer...
I was hesitant to recommend people upgrade to M4 Pro from M1 Pro or M2 Pro in the video. My original script covered this, and said that IMO only professionals (those who make money from working on their laptop) should seriously consider it. Time is money, and going from an M1 Pro (for example) to M4 Pro is such a huge leap in performance. I ended up cutting that section out to save time and also because I hoped it was pretty obvious for those already looking to upgrade 😂
But that performance boost... depends on... so if you work for hours with the timeline in FCP and then the export takes 7 min with M1 Pro and 4 min with M4 Pro, then it's not worth the upgrade. It really depends on the workload :) I bought MBP14 M1 Pro (not binned) 16/1000 with that more powerful charger ~2 years ago. For the better config (RAM and SSD) plus more ports and a good display. Plus it was on sale. I wanted 32 GB RAM but that is so expensive. I always prefer the Pro products :)
I got the M2 Max chip in March of 2023 then they came out with the M3 later that year. But I needed more RAM so i got the M4 Max with 64 GB of RAM vs. 48 GB. The M4 is one hell of a computer but the M2 is just as good too.
I'm glad I didn't wait for the M4 and got the M3 Pro instead. Most important for me was battery life and performance. M3 Pro is perfect for what I was looking for and M4 upgrade is not worth it for me.
Great video. Would you say M4 Pro is a solid choice for video editing? A lot of exaggeration on here saying you need the Max chip but I’ve seen base M4 handle 4K fine??
M4 Pro is all you need for video editing. It handles multi-cam 4K timelines easily. HOWEVER, once you start doing very intensive things like lots of effects, 3D animations, or noise removal/object tracking etc (and typically all at the same time), the M4 Max will be better. M4 Max will be overkill for most casual editors. It's really only for professionals.
I appreciate your efforts in making this video. Adorable kitty cat at 8:26! 🐈 😊 I sold my 2019 i9 16” MBP. I know I want the 14/20 Pro chip, 48GB RAM and 1 TB SSD. 1. I’m stuck on what size to get. Is the 14” going to allow a good workflow for Capture One/Lightroom photo editing or video editing in terms of screen real estate? The 16” has a nice large display but it has a large footprint. What are your thoughts? 2. One thing you missed in the video (or I missed) at 1:09 you showed, but didn’t reveal, *which* display was the nano texture. If I had to wager a guess, I’d say the top sample was nano. It looks slightly less vibrant. I’ve been to the Apple Store a couple times checking the nano out and I love the anti-glare ability but it looks ever slightly “smoky” on a white background.
I saw some people saying nano-texture is not that good, colors are muted and so, as glossy panel has that vibrant look which obviously matte screen isn't going to provide, can you share your thoughts on that?
Those people are so wrong lol. The nano-texture does not mute colors, and it does not make text less sharp. Sure, the screen doesn't look "glossy" any more but the tradeoff is SIGNIFICANTLY reduced glare and reflection which overall is actually more comfortable to look at and is less strain on your eyes. Literally the only drawback of nano-texture IMO is the additional $150 USD cost. I will be getting it on all my future MacBooks.
for normal user this make zero diference .... i tried m4pro and i have m2 pro and i cant even see anydiferent... u need to do some specific demanding task to se what diferent its make
At this point I feel that NPU is left with the promise of, almost the same as Apple Intelligence, maybe it will change and I hope so, but there are so many companies using AI for so many new things that I don't know if what Apple Intelligence does will really end up convincing .
I’m early in the video, but you mentioned displays without mentioning the fact that Apple upgraded the M4 displays without telling anyone into quantum dot
I'm more of a Windows + Android supporter. I think the Apple laptops have really blown away the competition in recent years which is why I have a few questions that if you can answer, I'd be very appreciative. I know this comparison didn't involve any windows laptops, but I'm wondering, why do you think Apple beats the competition in practically every benchmark; even comparable to laptops outfitted with the 4090 mobile? Imo, it's really just ARM vs x86, but what are your thoughts? Is it possible comparing the M4 which came out this year isn't exactly a fair comparison to the 4090 + i9 14th gen mobile of a year or two prior? If I prefer to stick to windows, are you familiar enough with the space to recommend me to hold off a few months, maybe even another year for a laptop in order to see some more ARM integration? Besides that, I also love gaming and emulation doesn't really seem like the way to go. For those reasons, would you recommend that I even consider Apple/ARM which doesn't support many games natively? Should I continue to buy x86 or even wait until ARM is fully supported? How long do you figure that would take? Great video! If you are able to answer my questions, I will be very thankful! God bless you :).
ARM vs x86 is definitely part of it, but Apple also makes their own hardware AND software. So the two work in harmony and are designed to complement each other. Windows ARM integration will improve over the next 1-2 years, but not significantly IMO. Particularly with games, it takes a lot of effort to make a game ARM-native. Hard to predict. Same with Apple gaming - it will take likely a decade to significantly improve. So if you need gaming capability, either stick with Windows, or get a Mac laptop + a budget gaming desktop.
@@CreatedTech I think in my case, Windows does work better. It'll be interesting to see if intel is able to optimize x86 to have better efficiency, or if the architecture really is just cooked. If the latter is true, how long it will take for everything to get migrated to ARM or some other new variation. On a completely separate note, even though your content is mostly Apple focused, would you consider making some videos comparing Framework laptops? I don't have that type of money but maybe you'd be interested in comparing a bunch of modular laptops especially because you can do it relatively cheaply compared to other brands. You could buy the 13 inch model for instance and buy the mainboards (or maybe they'll lend you some for testing) and you could do the comparison using all the same parts, minus the mainboard. Maybe a bit too niche, but I would love to see your style of videos with their products (especially because I own one). P.S. I'm not affiliated, I just really love the idea of PC modularity for a laptop.
My office got me an M3 Pro September this year because it was the time (company policies laptops should be replaced every 3 years). And after quick search oh boy the spec bump from M2 Pro to M3 pro and M3 pro to M4 pro was sooo different. M2 pro to M3 pro only got insignificant update (if not decrease on CPU core amount). BUT... M3 Pro to M4 Pro was crazy huge. The camera, display, ports, everything are sooo different. Damn you apple I wish I could get M4 pro instead of M3 pro
Bro I just want to say an opinion as a 3 week old macbook 10 m4 pro non-nano texture owner. I wish I bought the nano texture one cuz, yeah its bright and its watchable in every way on any occasion but god as a man who is used to matte screens over a decade this is glares are so distracting, if u are buying a new please buy with nano texture option. Im getting along with mine but if u want to hold your laptop for years just take the guaranteed one.
If I have to go for a budgeted refurbished pro laptop, for not so heavy task to keep for years(I dont like to change frequently) which one should I go?
Great video and once again thanks for getting back to my comment last week about with M CPU to purchase. So I now know I'm going with M4 but I was just curious if you would recommend going up to the 14 cpu/20 gpu model and is it worth it for the extra price. Cheers
9 months ago I purchased upgraded 16inch m3pro with 36gb of GPU, 512Gb on ebay for $2080 +tax... now I want m4pro but 14 inch version.. Apple offers $1,190 for my 16 inch m3pro as a trade-in for buying 14 inch m4pro.. the remaining balance would be almost $1000... does the idea sound very stupid or slightly stupid?
hey there! I'm looking for a replacement for my MBP 2015 i7, so in same money I'm able to get MBP m1 14' or MBA m3 14' with. And TBH I cannot decide, i won't play games on this, mostly it will be focused on programming, learning, no graphic stuff etc. I know that based on what I said MBA sounds reasonable but MBP have better screen/ speakers etc.
@@dr.python Actually I would love some specific recommendations. Because I specifically chose all the benchmarks/real-life tests in this video to be the best indicators of performance differences. You mention MaxTech, but they are notorious for making videos riddled with errors and making 4-5 videos just to answer one question, unlike mine that compares all 4 in just 10 minutes! They also do not use PugetBench (gold standard for anything creative) and waste time on useless benchmarks like Figma or Speedometer. No hate to them, they have their own way of comparing, as do I.
@@CreatedTech I would love to give specific recommendations too if I was well versed with it, and I’m not saying don’t do these benchmarks, all I’m saying is that just don’t limit to the same things that are already covered by many others, I’d love to take away something new that wasn’t already repeated multiple times or known after watching newer videos, perhaps inbuilt game benchmarks which people don’t usually do, it can still reflect the overall performance even if gaming isn’t the intended purpose. Maybe there are other dedicated ray tracing benchmarks out there too.
@@dr.python I get what you're saying. With these videos I also try to walk a fine line between "too many" benchmarks to avoid overwhelming the audience, and not enough. Unfortunately the lack of variety in benchmarks is due to most software just not being optimised for macOS. There are very few games that have dedicated benchmarks that work on Apple silicon for example. PugetBench is only just compatible - Lightroom doesn't even work yet (don't ask me about the nightmare that was creating this same video last year!). I do plan on expanding the benchmark variety as this changes though.
@@mex5341 The M4 Pro has significantly less memory bandwidth, less RAM, worse GPU performance, basically the same multicore CPU performance with the M3 Max having the edge in some benchmarks and the M4 Pro in others, also half the base storage. The M3 max is objectively better than the M4 Pro (comparing the unbinned versions of both). The only advantages of the M4 Pro are the single core performance, which lets face it is great in all modern Macs anyway, and the Thunderbolt 5 (that's important for some people).
Just say what we all know it’s good enough as it is now stop trying to convince yourself that you more out of a machine that’s already giving you more than enough. People are trying to find excuses to upgrade instead of you telling them there’s no reason and honestly, you’re much better off keeping what you have then spending thousands of dollars on what is probably not gonna do a massive difference.

1:22 this is not correct. The maximum of 4 TB for M4 Pro is only on MBP while Mac Mini M4 Pro can have 8 TB SSD. This makes me wonder: why? Why do Apple do this?
But the title of the video is only about the chips, not MBP. It's worth noting about M4 Pro that it actually support 8 TB in Mac Mini. My summary some weeks ago: M1-M4: max 2 TB All Max chips: max 8 TB M1 Pro - M2 Pro: max 8 TB M3 Pro: max 4 TB M4 Pro: max 4/8 TB (MBP/MacMini)
@@cjeelde The title is so long already that the word "MacBook" can't be added. Regardless, it's obvious that this video is about the MacBook Pro. They are featured front and centre in the thumbnail, in the first second of the video, and verbally mentioned multiple times. It doesn't even matter because no one in their right mind would pay for an 8TB SSD upgrade anyway.
As I said, the title is about the chips. Maybe the title could have been "Ultimate Comparison: MBP M1-M4 Pro"? And yes, all normal clever people will never pick that expensive 8 TB option. I still think it's worth to mention that M4 Pro in Mac Mini actually support 8 TB. That can be done in the description box. But otherwise it's a really good video! I miss Apple's own info about TFLOPs for the GPU. They revealed it for M1 and M2, and we can estimate it for M3. Apple was more detailed before. I noticed that when M3 came out, when comparing Pro and Max, Max got much more "love" from Apple. Now with M4, Pro got much more "love". As I see it, M4 Pro is really really good! Much thanks to N3E and ARMv9! And maximum of 64 GB RAM!
@@cjeelde "Ultimate Comparison: MBP M1-M4 Pro" is definitely not a user-friendly title 😆. 95% of people would have no idea what that means. And why would I mention that the Mac Mini goes to 8TB in the description of a MacBook Pro comparison video? No one will see it and again, it's just not relevant to this video. This is for people searching for a LAPTOP. They are not interested in DESKTOP Macs. I get what you're saying but you're picking a really odd hill to die on!
Do you understand how much money this video cost me to produce? First, I had to buy all 4 of these MacBooks (Apple doesn't send them to me and I also don't return them). Then, I have to fund all the camera equipment and lighting etc used to record everything. Next, I need to spend 4-6 days straight benchmarking and comparing and writing the script to make it easier for people to understand AND recording the footage. Then, I need to spend another 2 days editing the final video. So all up about 8 days of full-time work minimum. And I also create chapters for sponsored sections so that you can literally skip the entire section with a tap of a button. It saddens me that you enjoy these videos but also don't want to be inconvenienced by me trying to fund their production.

Still rocking a MacBook Pro 2015.. which one do you recommend I should upgrade to
I had an M2 15 inch MacBook Air, but after thinking about it, I decided to trade it in for a M4 Pro MacBook Pro Base version, I decided to not upgrade the ram or SSD since I had a external drive and 24gb RAM is already really good enough when running multiple applications
I was waiting for this review from my favourite creator since the M4s launched lol
What a coincidence, because you're my favourite subscriber!
It really depends on the workload :)
I bought MBP14 M1 Pro (not binned) 16/1000 with that more powerful charger ~2 years ago. For the better config (RAM and SSD) plus more ports and a good display. Plus it was on sale. I wanted 32 GB RAM but that is so expensive. I always prefer the Pro products :)
Still good with 16” M1 Pro 1 TB , recall got $700 off in 2022
I got the M2 Max chip in March of 2023 then they came out with the M3 later that year. But I needed more RAM so i got the M4 Max with 64 GB of RAM vs. 48 GB. The M4 is one hell of a computer but the M2 is just as good too.
I have a M3 Air 15 and a M1 Pro 16. Air for on the go work, M1 Pro for heavy editing
I'm glad I didn't wait for the M4 and got the M3 Pro instead. Most important for me was battery life and performance. M3 Pro is perfect for what I was looking for and M4 upgrade is not worth it for me.
I have seen comments about how m3 chip is even worse than M2, what do you think?
Considering the price, if M3pro price is cheaper than M4 (both new), maybe it's a good choice?
Great video! Can you also make a comparison video about the base M4 Max? It's weird that so one seems to be testing this config.
That Tomtoc is like a dogbed for your macbook lol
Great video. Would you say M4 Pro is a solid choice for video editing? A lot of exaggeration on here saying you need the Max chip but I’ve seen base M4 handle 4K fine??
M4 Pro is all you need for video editing. It handles multi-cam 4K timelines easily. HOWEVER, once you start doing very intensive things like lots of effects, 3D animations, or noise removal/object tracking etc (and typically all at the same time), the M4 Max will be better.
M4 Max will be overkill for most casual editors. It's really only for professionals.
@makes sense, thanks for the reply! Keep up the good work!
I appreciate your efforts in making this video. Adorable kitty cat at 8:26! 🐈 😊
I sold my 2019 i9 16” MBP.
Tomtoc Defender-A42 is the best laptop carrier bag! Im using it sincs i bought an M4 pro! So I recommend it! ❤
@@CreatedTech thanks for the clarification
If you're on M1, it's OK to upgrade. Not necessary depending on your needs. If you're on m2 or above, wait for m5
for normal user this make zero diference .... i tried m4pro and i have m2 pro and i cant even see anydiferent... u need to do some specific demanding task to se what diferent its make
I swear every other video just says a bunch of crap without telling us anything or trying to get us to spend our money. THANK YOU.
At this point I feel that NPU is left with the promise of, almost the same as Apple Intelligence, maybe it will change and I hope so, but there are so many companies using AI for so many new things that I don't know if what Apple Intelligence does will really end up convincing .
I think I’m going to stick with my M1 Pro for another 2 year at least
I’m early in the video, but you mentioned displays without mentioning the fact that Apple upgraded the M4 displays without telling anyone into quantum dot
Imperceptible difference when side by side with previous version = not worth wasting time talking about.
Damn you apple I wish I could get M4 pro instead of M3 pro
can u do all base model m1 vs m2 vs m3 vs m4 mac book pro?
Real question, MBP 14inch M3 (not pro) 8Gb ram VS MBP 14inch M1 Pro 16gb ram.
when is the max chips video coming
Going to get the 24GB M4 pro 12-core, 1TB ssd with nano texture - good choice?
Sounds good to me. Nano texture is 🔥
yes mate !
@@alpgencgil4936 16 inch or 14”?
Does the base M4 have the new webcam too with the higher max brightness screen?
If I have to go for a budgeted refurbished pro laptop, for not so heavy task to keep for years(I dont like to change frequently) which one should I go?
MacBook Air m3 or macbook pro m2 which is best to buy a laptop???
That is, what do you need it for and what should you do, if you have heavy software work, then m2 pro, if not, then air will be fine : )
Great video and once again thanks for getting back to my comment last week about with M CPU to purchase. So I now know I'm going with M4 but I was just curious if you would recommend going up to the 14 cpu/20 gpu model and is it worth it for the extra price. Cheers
Not much reason to update M1 is amazing
9 months ago I purchased upgraded 16inch m3pro with 36gb of GPU, 512Gb on ebay for $2080 +tax... now I want m4pro but 14 inch version.. Apple offers $1,190 for my 16 inch m3pro as a trade-in for buying 14 inch m4pro.. the remaining balance would be almost $1000... does the idea sound very stupid or slightly stupid?
💀
Can we have other benchmarks that are unique and not already covered by bigger one like Max Tech
What other “unique” benchmarks do you suggest? This video covers a pretty wide range of workflows.
Anything most people haven’t already seen weeks ago, I’m sure you aren’t running out of ideas
Correct answer is apple refurb'd M3 Max.
if u're cheap yes . but M4 pro still would be better
Yeah I totally second that! but for the unbinned 16/40 M3 Max!
Ehh CPU, thermals and battery life are better on M4 Pro
@ If your workflow needs 64gb and 40 core gpu, M4 Pro doesn't get there.
thanks
Just say what we all know it’s good enough as it is now stop trying to convince yourself that you more out of a machine that’s already giving you more than enough. People are trying to find excuses to upgrade instead of you telling them there’s no reason and honestly, you’re much better off keeping what you have then spending thousands of dollars on what is probably not gonna do a massive difference.
Thanks for literally recapping what I said in the video 😂😂😂
m1 pro vs m3 air . please 🙏. its the same price now
M1 pro for sure
@Kratos30000 but it 2nd hand
@@itssremon m1 pro no competition - test it first or buy from somewhere you can return - the xdr displays on the m1 pro laptops are the killer feature for sure
The M2 Pro 14-inch is still a good value.
We’re not done with these videos yet? 😂😂😂
Still rocking my 2015 model ❤
1:22 this is not correct.
The maximum of 4 TB for M4 Pro is only on MBP while Mac Mini M4 Pro can have 8 TB SSD.
This makes me wonder: why? Why do Apple do this?
No, it is correct, because I am only comparing MacBook Pros in this video...
But the title of the video is only about the chips, not MBP. It's worth noting about M4 Pro that it actually support 8 TB in Mac Mini.
My summary some weeks ago:
M1-M4: max 2 TB
All Max chips: max 8 TB
M1 Pro - M2 Pro: max 8 TB
M3 Pro: max 4 TB
M4 Pro: max 4/8 TB (MBP/MacMini)
I pick none
M4 pro extra memory is NOT for free!
It is though lmao. They were all priced at the $1999 mark when first released, but the M4 comes with additional RAM.
Bro add some grain to your videos. The banding is destroying my corneas
Banding? I think you just need a better display 😂
M3 really is garbage huh
I understand you need to make a buck (and I actually like your posts) but the sleeve promotion had me turn off the rest of the video.
@@CreatedTech i thought your segue was pretty hilarious bro thanks for all the time you put in for these you have the good style
