Can't play if games crash all the time. My steam deck is definitely overheating. I ordered the "good one" but realized it would come from China so in a month's time. I decided to order the replacement fan from ifixit after. Yeah, this is becoming a real problem. I tried multiple things and yes, my SD is out of warranty. I noticed one thing: "outside" the steam app it last longer. I guess it accepts higher temperatures? Yes, I tried lowering the specs and even manually setting up the GPU. =(
Really liked the video, the game I am having issues is actually Cyberpunk, so this was informative. I have a SteamDeck OLED, does it make a difference? I can usually play with no problem, but sometimes I do notice it gets really noisy, hot, and in some ocasion it does freeze/shut off. I have the SteamDeck settings, so im not pushing it further that it should, I think. Could a backplate help? Should I contact Steam? I assumed it is a demanding game, and I only have issues sometimes, but I am worried newer games could take a greater toll, seeing you can run Cyberpunk with no issues on the anterior version of the console.
Try Iontophoresis, helped me a lot. You just put your hands in water with a low electric current for 15min every 2 weeks or so and your hands magically don't sweat anymore. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iontophoresis
I will say temp of the SD directly affects the battery life. I first hand watched my SD lose it's battery a lot faster on high temps vs lower. With that being said, that Jsaux v2 sounds good even if it increases how long i can play for at least 20-30 mins
What's your opinion on the fact that circle vent of JSAUX Backplate V2 essentially bypasses the airflow that's supposed to go through other components via the OG vent?
It’s hard to tell if it has any long lasting negative effects at this time. I know it possibly changes the pressure of the airflow in the machine, but I’m personally not worried about it.
One question, my steam deck gets really hot when playing a good game, and the battery drains really quickly, but the biggest problem is the fact that the smell coming from the deck smells like something is burning, could this be because I haven’t really used it for extended periods of time or should I contact steam, barring in mind that I don’t think it’s seen 24 hours of activity yet as I spend between 1 and 2 hours a night playing on it and I have had it for less than a month brand new?
@@JasonWitmerYT hi, thank you for your reply, I decided to plug my steam deck in to charge and then I just played contraband officer for 3 hours straight and I after about an hour the deck reached a constant temperature and it smelt really bad and then the fan kicked in and a massive cloud of something was blowing out the vent, I think possibly to much thermal grease was applied and it had dried up, so I think it should be fine, I did contact steam and they said it isn’t too common but it does occasionally happen
Let me list the cooling things I did to my steam deck... JSAUX v1 back case with exposed aluminum plate No name SSD copper heatsink to cool the WD SN740 SSD, which the bare drive DOES overheat during heavy transfer. This is just to delay the thermal throttling long enough that most operation would have been done. Removal of the EMI shield. Copper Cooldeck from youtuber Low Cost, and have it mated to JSAUX backplate via a thinner thermal pad. Drilling and grinding vent holes at the fan intake, making my back plate like V2's vent with V1's metal plate. You mean I get this thing to play game from steam??? I thought it is for competitive modding, which is the game... I did advise my friends... I'm screwing around for fun, they should just get JSAUX V2 backplate if they want a bit better cooling and lower fan noise to get similar results without spending a lot of time and money. Cooling does help components last longer, IIRC there's a industry saying that by lowering temperature 10C degrees, you double your component life.
My steam deck is freezing after playing a strategy game (Anno 1800) for like 2 hours… does that mean defective or would a cooler be a valid option? I mainly use it in handstand at a fixed position to accommodate my MacBook so I don’t really care about plugging it into a wall socket.
No problem, I addressed this in the video. Valve knows what it takes to cool the steam deck - they would not allow it to get so hot that it will hurt performance. You don’t need to do anything. Putting a fan on to it will not increase performance - just play it normally and enjoy ☺️
Hello crocodile. It really depends on what you want from a handheld. I did reviews on both of them, so go check those out and see which one makes more sense for you.
I’ve used the Steam Deck Oled for the last several months and can confidently confirm it’s become my single most used gaming device in ages! Highly recommended.
I fully agree with your conclusion when talking about the SD as a portable gaming device, but one use-case you didn't mention/test playing games at home on an external monitor or projector (where the added bulk doesn't matter, since it's docked anyway). Even with the old 1080p projector that I have I have noticed that some games will run fine for a while until random slowdowns happen due to thermal throttling (unless I lower the settings a lot). So I think I'll give the EasySMX a try. Thanks for the reviews!
I've never liked deceptive advertising claiming a product does something it doesn't. In the case of game console coolers like these, they claim to increase performance and make the console cooler. Yes, most "good" ones will make the Steam Deck cooler. But they won't increase performance. What wasn't mentioned in the video was that the Steam Deck was designed with a thermal performance range and as long as it remains in that range, its good to go. The coolers don't really affect cooling enough to allow overclocking nor would you want to if you even could.
can confirm the Jsaux blower style cooler works magically. It's a little bit loud but definitely tolerable. I will note I use the newer JSaux RGB backplate too, and you can kinda feel the fan pulling air threw the vent over the components. Definitely a must have
I got the Benazcap Backplate for $13, replaced thermal paste with PTM7950, and added extra to the cooler where it makes contact with the back plate. I also drilled some holes where the stock fan sits. average temp with backplate 71-74c temp with backplate fan on 65-69c most of the time hovers 66c. best $30 spent.
@@JasonWitmerYT well if the numbers are lower that means it's less hot, and then you can overclock it to gain more performance for higher graphical settings or even a higher resolution screen modification. You won't have to worry about overheating.
I would like to run the Steam Deck with OC. But since heat is a very big problem there, I think a combination of thermal cooling pads with the Jsaux v2 and a small additional fan can make a difference. However, I have read that many components are no longer cooled properly if you use the Jsaux v2 with the holes. Is this serious information? I mean, because the holes on the fan ensure that the air is not pushed out properly from the top. Another idea of mine is that you can replace the thermal paste inside the vapor deck with liquid metal paste and replace the original vapor cooler with a better one? So I have ideas of what I can do. But no decision. Any suggestions?
I personally use the v2 backplate - it looks cool and atleast does something. I'd say give it a shot and if you dont like it after a few days, you can consider returning.
Having personally tested the jsaux v2 cooling fan kit along with their carrying case mod I can tell you that cooling is very effective. In combination the cooling I ended up with a fan that’s unaltered and just the cooling fan itself on max the degrees was 64 Celsius consistently after about 2-4 minutes of constant use. Dropping from 84 Celsius. Completely worth it imo. The test was done multiple times on/off of course. Now I also had a ssd upgrade and swapped the “wrapper” tin foil from the ssd out for a full copper plate. I know it affected cooling a little but. But still this is massive.
ok. But the question is what's the point ? Is the Steam Deck prone to thermal throttling ? (meaning it cuts down performance to cool the device); I haven't seen this to be true. Or is the Steam Deck prone to actual overheating, like it'll shutdown/turn off. Again, I haven't seen this to be the case. I actually watched this video because I just got a Steam Deck, and seeing all these cooler accessories made me think I purchased a poorly designed console device. But this video clears up that the Steam Deck does not suffer from any thermal throttling nor shutdown issues from overheating. Thus, these cooling fans don't do much and they don't improve gaming performance.
Awh, im so sad. I was interested in getting the magnetic jsaux fan(admittedly, yes. For the added RGB. I love the colorful lights) but it doesnt seem as though they carry it anymore.
Hey I just stumbled upon your channel. Really like your content and humour. I have a question about the jsaux backplate v2. Would you say that "because it help with cooling a little" the deck is less noisy? I wouldn't say I care much about cooling, but man sometimes the deck is very noisy.
I wouldn’t say it reduces the volume at all, to be honest. It is possible to have a slightly lower threshold on some games, but I haven’t tested the noise thoroughly. Thanks for watching!

You're entitled to your opinion, but what will those 10 degrees get you? More performance? Truly, what do you stand to benefit by seeing the little number in the corner go down by 5-10? In my mind, it's another thing to charge/plug in and strap on to your portable device for no real life benefits. Theoretically, keeping temps a little lower MIGHT extend the life of the device, but unless you are cranking cyberpunk 2077 24 hours a day for years, i dont think its worth the time, money, effort to use any external coolers.
