Im 51 and love long hair so I needed this. So tired of stylists always wanting to do the mommy hair cut on my long hair. I also don't think that turning 50 means you have to cut all your hair off! I love his suggestions. This might be my new favorite channel.
Absolutely! I noticed that after I had a few other folks mention it. I edited that video without my headphones in usually use and I won’t make that mistake again! Lol. Thanks for the feedback!
Justin Hickox excellent! Nothing worse than having someone I actually WANT to hear talk and music overpowers their genius! Thx for being open. PS: Nice to find someone else that talks as fast as I do LOL! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Braids work really well. Also pull hair back like your putting in ponytail then twist and secure with non slip fastener.Works good with long hair not layered. Also been trying cloth head bands works well for the front of your hair.
I'm 53 year old with hair down to my waist, I don't color it, my natural color is brown (I'm Mexican) extra fine, (my daughter says it looks fake b/c at my age is rare to have this kind of hair) just getting some gray hair here and there, shiny lustrous and healthy. I get a trim or bangs whenever i feel like it. I don't care if I look older. I LOVE my hair!!
Yes! Love it! I grew my hair out during the pandemic lockdown after years of buying into the idea I shouldn’t let my hair get too long. I discovered I loved it so much and have continued to let it grow to my waist. I’m keeping it this long even though I’m in my 50s.
I totally understand, I’m very visual as well. It’s surprisingly hard to find photos online that aren’t super expensive that I can use because of copyright concerns. It would be very easy to spend thousands of dollars on one video just to find every perfect picture. So I add The best photos I can find within reason to display my point.
Thank you Justin you are right on target! My best tip for women with long hair is to find a stylist who also has long hair! Doing so, I now get great layered cuts, even with my fine silky (beautiful) hair! Most other stylists just assume I want a "Grandma cut" simply cuz I'm over 50. The ageism is deafening!
Music is distracting and diminishes the great quality of your message.

Maybe some low fi or a little jazz or something of your own musical taste in between when you are taking a breather. Also, maybe use your hands a bit less to express yourself. Would show more command & confidence. Speak a little slower.
I loved this video. I'm 46 and have really long hair. I am constantly struggling with whether or not I should keep it long or cut it off. I agree, "don't get stuck in your best year ever" and try to evolve with your style.
I have had bangs for 20 years and recently grew them out and cut in long layers. The extra softness around my face with some chin length layers made such a difference. Movement and shape is definitely key.
I am 60... I have very long thick hair... down to my waistline ... get LOTS of compliments... I keep it colored a medium golden brown... that compliments my skin tone... since I love variety, I curl it, wave it, put it in messy buns, pony tails, long fringe bangs... when my bangs get long, I twist and braid them back into my hair... most people think I am ten years younger than I am... plus I smile a lot... thanks for your videos... I enjoy them...
Hi Cindyjean, you look great btw. And im happy to hear someone who actually likes to have long hair. As long as it looks good on you, keep it long. I also have long hair and i love the variety of it. Can put it up or leave it down. You go gurl! ~ Whimsy Meadows
Smiling is huge!! Not just in the moment, but without it, the face in repose can look quite severe. Also.. Jowls. Ugh. I have to remind myself to smile, or my face falls off.
Greetings Justin- Could you please address fine hair, the styles that might be best to make it seem like more hair or maybe more movement. Enjoy your videos, your practical approach and wealth of knowledge!! Thanking you!! Ciao- ;-)
62 years young, started going grey, adding grey highlights with brunette, let it grow long (mid back), it has a wave and ringlets when I air dry, very full. Not sure what else to do with it, get lots of compliments. Thank you for the video. Loved it.
Just found you. (recently retired Cosmetologist) Your videos are wonderful. Don't change a thing and don't dumb it down. I'll be binge watching, thank you.
I loved my waist length hair with the short feathered look in the 80s. My hairdresser suggested an updated version of that. It's basically long bangs that I brush back and set with Mousse or spray. We were both happy with the outcome!
I'm 75. 15 years ago I looked at my roots and discovered my dad's SILVER. So I let the color grow off. Then when my hubby went to heaven, I wanted pictures to put on FB and other online places, but I didn't like them. So I looked at all my young pictures and found the ones I liked - all long hair. So I started oiling my scalp and hair to increase growth (worked!), and I now have long, silver hair that my hair dresser says women pay a lot of money to match the color. If my hair is long, I can put it up and make it look short and elegant. But if it's short, I can't make it look naturally long.
Same here. I'm 70 with salt & pepper. I planned to spruce it up with blue, purple etc colors on silver but it refuses to completely grow out. I'm now told women would pay big $ to have my medium length salt/pepper hair. I'll never get the "old lady pixie do".
I definitely think it’s the shape (not just the length) that makes a great style on someone. Long or short is about the person not the age or anything else?
I thank God my daughter became a hairdresser. My hair is long. She won’t cut it. She simply takes care of it for me. Very tired of people saying women over fifty should cut their hair. It all depends on the condition of YOUR hair.
exactly...I am 67 and live in an independent community living building for seniors. I hear it all the time..."you should cut your hair" NO, no, I should not. My hair is about halfway down my back, naturally wavy and a very dark brown...not a bit of grey in it (yet). I layer it but I am NOT cutting it short
I was blessed ,Genes inherited from my parents, at over 70 I have hair mid -back length ,shiny with minimal gray 20%. I use products marketed to women of color and wash my hair 1-2 times a week ,with coloring limited to semi - permanent on occasion and am using temporary color rest of the time. Air dry most of the time. Love everything about your videos. Thanks for posting.
That’s awesome! I wish I was blessed that great with your hair! Lucky. And thank you so much for the support I really appreciate that. I’m so glad you like the videos.
I keep my hair long to keep it out of my face by simply tying it into a knot. No accessories, no fuss. Looks a touch severe, but works somewhat with my face. For a more stylish look, I simply open the knot, run my fingers through the hair and it already has waves from being in the knot for so long. Not perfect styling, but a worthy compromise for next to no time spent on making it look good. Hair is straight and very smooth, so I don't even need to comb it to keep it tangle free for the most part. If it starts tangling, I need a new haircut. I mostly manage how it looks when not tied up with a good haircut. It is very forgiving hair. If it stops looking good, time to cut again. Length is always slightly more than I need to tie a knot securely, but I do have layers, etc. I like your idea of bangs - this may make the knot look less severe and not add any "work" to keeping hair looking good. More style for same/no effort.
Awesome! Yes, I think bangs would be a great option for you. Sometimes adding small things to a style that’s already working, can be JUST enough change to make a huge impact. Can’t wait to hear how it turns out if you decide to try it!
Im 57 and love my hair long ...ive worn it short when younger even had a pixie. ..but im now into my longer hair its feminine soft sexy ...im a natural redhead and really appreciate it now more than everrrr ...love all your content 💝💝
Hey! Thank you! It’s super subtle and it makes a HUGE impact. I believe many times, it’s the little things that add up to create the big differences. Thanks for the feedback!
I found after washing and letting my hair dry for a while, I use large Velcro rollers. When I first taken them out, my hair is a little too puffy, but it settles down and actually looks fantastic several hours later or the next day. I can put a pony tail in with fabric scrunching to quicken this process. Something about the Velcro rollers smooths all the frizzies in my salt n pepper hair. No heat needed which is a plus. Thank you.
As long as the topic is keeping long hair as we age, it is worth it to point out that for many ( if not most) women, hair thins with age. Hair follicles also stop doing what they used to do. Often the hair at the back of the head may continue to grow long, while the hair at the sides of the head stops growing at a shorter length. The result on women who refuse to notice this is a long, skimpy tail of hair down the center back, with wispy sides. I have had long hair all my life, and I understand wanting to keep it, but I have come to realize that the head of hair actually looks much thicker and healthier when the length is cut straight across at a length that all the hair can still grow to.
Absolutely a valid point for sure! There are so many different things that I can talk about in a video like this. I’ll definitely be doing more videos that talk about more concerns. There’s so much it’s just a lot to put into one video and people will stop watching it if there’s too much info. Does that make sense? But I do absolutely love this suggestion and I appreciate the feedback.
LOL! People get crazy on TH-cam! Say something that people could take mildly the wrong way and you can find yourself in a whirlwind of crappy comments LOL now I just played a little safer. LOL
I was thinking the same thing lol. You can tell people have stressed him out 😂 I could not be a TH-camr. People take offense to everything these days and always find something to complain about.
I have known some women can to flip out over their hair. I will grow back... often before you know it. I loved that he is not pushing for everyone to color cover up the gray. I am embracing it
Susan A LOL! Agreed!! I actually appreciate that he cares not to offend but says what he thinks anyway! It is IMPOSSIBLE to please everyone. I have never seen or heard of him until coming across this just today. I subscribed because of his explanations and honesty.
This was really useful, thank-you. I have just turned 50 and realise I haven't changed my brown, mid length hair for years! It does make you nervous to change though! I don't have bangs so I will check out your video now for bangs. Thank-you!
You're so informative, stylish, sincere and intelligent! I haven't been so glad to stumble across a tube in a long time. Much love! Can't wait for what's next, and love that you talk about color and you love to move around the studio
I have long hair that has thinned some with age.I add a few hair extensions ....what a big difference that makes. I feel like I’m in my 30’s again!! Love your videos 😀
WoW! Just found your channel and it is so refreshing to see someone who discusses having long hair and being older...thank you so much for your content!!! I am 54 yrs. old, my original hair color is black, my grays frame my face mostly, but the rest of my hair is still black, and I also have a grey streak which runs from the crown on the right side all the way down, which I've had since I was little and became more apparent as I grew up...I love my long hair and it is hard to find someone in my area who understands long hair, how to cut it and understands the texture change - mine went from sleek straight to course and wavy. I feel if I go with a younger hairstylist they tend to want to cut shorter, and if I go with an older hairstylist they seem to be stuck in the 80's. Thank you for the great ideas...and look forward to watching the videos you mentioned on bangs! And on how to cut your own hair! Thank you again!!!
Thank you so much! I appreciate that. I feel like I owe people the same time they're giving me, so trying to respond to all the comments is the least I can do! :)
I’ve let my hair grow very long and I’m 72. When I wore it a little longer I would blow it straight. I have bangs that I think soften my face. I keep it colored an Auburn color that lets me continue wearing jewel colors. Since I have grown it very long I curl it or do a Mermaid curl every other week. I wash my hair about every 4-5 days and find that my hair feels more healthy than when I use to wash it every other day. I liked listening to your video. It was good hearing someone talk about long hair on mature women.
Hi. Your suggestions are great. I am 61. Letting my hair grow a bit longer, but keeping layers. My hair is not gray enough for salt and pepper yet. I am dark haired, and my stylist throws in lighter highlights. It brightens up my face, and I get nice feedback.
I just stumbled on his channel today and find his info incredibly helpful. The one thing that sticks out in his videos so far, is the need to justify his advice……..Based on a lot of the comments below, I can totally understand why. Seriously, I’m grateful as a 48 year old woman that someone is even addressing aging hair. The last thing I’m going to do is blast his opinion or the content. I’ll take the nuggets of advice that apply to me and be happy. I’ll never understand the people that nitpick every video. It’s quite sad, really. @justin hickox, keep up the great advice and videos. I for one, am grateful.
I'm so glad I stumbled across your video when looking for tips on correcting layered hair. I liked my hair long (as I love pulling up), but as I've gotten older - and gained some weight - I noticed layering my hair to give shape and movement was more flattering on me. Otherwise, the long, uniform length would pull down my face (accentuating what gravity was already doing to my face) and making me look tired. The layers made me appear fresh & alert and gave me a more youthful appearance. There is definitly an ideal flattering length on me that I won't go past.
This is the 1st video of yours that I've seen, and I'm so grateful that I saw this. The incredible caliber of content, the photos to illustrate your point, and the range of tips that you offer make this a must see video! Actually, I watched it twice. How I wish that I could see you. Look forward to checking out more of your work. Thank you for the fantastic video! ❤
Thanks Justin. What a kind and considerate person you are. Great advice I can relate to. I am 55 with long hair. Still colouring. Have gone lighter but I am very tempted to go to Salt and pepper with dark highlights like you’ve said. I know that styling to make my hair smoother makes a huge difference to my overall youthful look. I will check out more of your videos.
I love my long hair and there are several reasons why. First the bony structure of my head doesn’t support short hair. I found that out the hard way. I just need more “fluff” to overcome that. Secondly I have a fantastic hair stylist. Actually she doesn’t style my hair in so much that she keeps my length from getting to long for my age. She respects me but advises me. She keeps it trimmed and softly layered. She’s been taking care of me for 35+ years. And she is the best colorist I know. You’d best not miss an appointment or it’ll be awhile before you get back in! She’s that good. What I’m saying is know yourself, find someone really good, and make regular appointments if you are able to afford them and be thankful you have that person. Last thought: sometimes I will come up with an idea of a new look I want. She ponders it and if she thinks it will work for me she’ll agree. If not I respect her answer. She’s never failed me. And my husband always loves my hair. That says a lot at 74 years of age. Enjoyed your presentation!
I happened upon this video today and it was very helpful, I am 53 and decided during all this Covid crap to let my hair grow longer, I have worn it in a stacked bob for years and I have been afraid to change my style but feel this is a good time to do it because I can always cut it if I don’t like it. I think I’m going to try your suggestion of adding bangs, I don’t really like the way I look with all my hair pulled back off my face so adding bangs might be the answer for me. Thanks for this great video and I am going to check out the rest of videos too!
I have super thick hair medium length. My stylist has been trying to get me to do an undercut. I live in the southwest desert and thick long hair is so hot in the summer. I finally did it and it has changed my life. I can pull my hair up on the crown and nobody ever sees the undercut. I used to have to wear it up in a pony or clip which doesn't work that great with thick hair. That's the tip. Literally half my head is shaved, no one can see it, and I still have a ton of hair. Best of all, it's cool to wear and no more triangle head.
I’m 68 . My hair has always been chôme coloured dark brown . Last year I decided to have a balayage and then gradually became blonder with contrasting darker roots . It’s long , it’s straightened with bangs and I love it. You are absolutely right . It was if you were talking about me lol
Great ideas for older women with long hair. Highlights and layers made a huge difference in my thick hair. I'd love to see a video on how to style long side swept bangs, especially for those with heavier hair.
Very helpful. So happy I found your channel. 50 is knocking at my door and I always had long, thin, stringy, blonde hair. I now live in Florida and it gets frizzy so easy now. My biggest secret has been finding a new hair stylist that understands my hair and I absolutely trust her. I now have that medium shaggy, textured kinda bob cut that I only wash once a week and I get so many compliments. I was actually told by another female at the store that I'm sexy!!!!! I have a 23 year old daughter and people think she's my little sister!!! I can't wait to use some of your tricks and tips to help me maintain my hair between seeing my stylist. Thank you from an almost fabulous fifty!!
I completely agree with you...you need to style your hair and you need to do it on a regular basis. Many women that have long hair, they wind up putting their hair in a ponytail and it just looks sloppy and lazy. I think a slide part looks super youthful 🦋🌺❤️🌈
I had long hair for many years. I finally decided to cut it off. It was starting to look straggly, at least to me. I went with an asymmetrical bob with a stacked back. My hair now feels fuller and even looks like there is more than when it was long. I have always had baby fine hair and felt better with it short to mid length. It is now just above the collar in the back with side down almost to my chin. I think this look does make me look years younger. Hair styles do depend on your hair and how it behaves, curly or straight. Not everyone can wear long hair nor short hair. I find just inbetween looks good on me but I still love the shag and pixie cuts. Plan to try one of those next. You just have to try different styles and have fun with them. I always say if it doesnt turn out to your liking you can always grow it back
balayage helped me to look younger. I started doing it 5 years ago and think it was the best decision. it gives some movement and volume. also, by experimenting a bit with the length I discovered that at my current age I prefer having my hair 5-10cm shorter than I used to have earlier. it is still long hair but makes me feel younger and more stylish.
I agree, I have salt and pepper hair. Actually very dark and very white in other places. My hair has gone fine and silky. I have never had to use straighteners ever.
Thank you for sharing your expertise. Seriously...I did not notice you were even gray until you mentioned it. I've been trying so hard to hide mine. Food for thought. Thanks.
Thank you! I’m glad I can help. It’s weird, some days my hair looks more gray and other days it looks less grade. He has to do a lot with the lighting I believe. I really appreciate your support!
Thank you for showing which flat iron you use. I ordered it and it showed up the next day I only had to run it through my hair once. On 350 . Was only 100 . Thank you Thank you.
Yup, mine is long and salt and pepper! Easy peasy. Can be wavy if the humidity is up. Straight in the winter. You just never know how it will turn out!
Liked your video and a good confirmation of what I'm doing with my longer, fuller s&p hair: wash, condition, serum then towel dry and let air dry in a loose bun. Sure it takes a while and the results are worth it. Silky soft and shinier hair!
I have hair down to the middle of my rear that is predominately straight, though after I went into peri-menopause, it did develope a slight wave. I shampoo & condition with Loma brand -only washing my roots while conditioning it all. I deep condition as needed. I wash every 2-3 days. I do color my hair (roots only) because at 51, if feel the lack of color washes me out. I was a natural auburn redhead so that is what I strive to keep to. However I do highlight around my face to behind my ears, as well as a few small strips at my part, only. This helps to blend my gray roots when they grow out in-between colorings as well as flows beautifully over the darker color underneath. When I have roots but not the time to color, I make my own root powder with cornstarch, essential oils and some bronzer mineral powder. This serves as both a root touch-up as well as a dry shampoo. Keeping the ends trimmed and neat is imperative to a classy, tailored look. I usually go get a trim twice a year. Once a year I go thru every strand and trim with iced scissors for any split ends as well, as bottom trims miss the higher broken strands. When I am wanting a more polished & elegant look, I give myself a blow-out or use the flat iron to smooth my hair. It gives it a very nice additional sheen to my already straight hair. I never lean back on or sleep on my hair, always moving it to the side when I sit or above my pillow when I sleep as ruff fabrics are hard on the individual stands. In the winter, I tuck it inside my coat; summertime I usually have it up in a messy bun or ponytail anyway, as it's so hot & heavy it's unbearable to me. I do use a natural bristle brush to distribute the oils and a natural bone comb to stimulate my scalp, as well. And I never brush or comb my hair wet. Usually wash my hair before bed and sleep with it wet as it takes hours to dry, this way I can avoid applying heat to it but only rarely. Thank you for this helpful video. I am.lookingnforward to watching the others you have.
I only started letting my hair grow long and uncolored during the pandemic. I'm 63. I'd been wearing the above-the-shoulder length for 30 years. I haven't had hair this long since the 70s. Anyway, one day in July 2021 I was having a bad day all around. On impulse I called a random salon and made an appointment for just a cut. It was nice to have a stylist listen to me and then give me supportive feedback and suggestions. Anyway, I started following your videos and I've been thrilled that my new stylist has been saying and doing the same things! I'm learning to find my beauty (it's in there somewhere) and I find much of that comes from my own confidence. So, now that I've got a good cut that I like for a change, I'm considering a suggestion from my stylist that involves "brushing" in highlights that will make my gray/white strands "pop" (your words). My old color is nearly gone at the ends and I'm getting a little drab. Not that I want the color again. My husband loves the way it's looking now and more importantly, so do I. Did I have a question here? Oh, yes, can you show videos of brushing? Is it like highlighting? It happens to be an Aveda Salon (I'm vegan) but I'm not sure that makes too much difference. I'm trying this now (February 2022) be ause I want my hair to look nice for my nephew's wedding this April and I figure this gives me time to play around with my hair.
I really agree with everything in this video. There are some really good tips and advise. I do have a question, though and I'll kind of explain before I ask it. 18 months ago I stopped coloring my grey hair. (I've been almost 80% grey since my early 30's.) The thing is, my hair grows insanely fast and I'd have a week of coloring that looked good and then after that this distinct line of demarcation between the dark dyed hair and my incoming grey/silver. It was a battle I was never going to win, so I have finally embraced it. When I first decided to stop coloring, I had my hairdresser lighten my hair and actually add in grey highlights. This really helped it look so much better while I transitioned over to all natural color. What a journey! Anyway, I just share this story so you will understand my questions and comments better. After this was all said and done, I realize that my hair really isn't grey at all, but instead a striking shade of white and silver with a bit of dark lingering underneath. It's a beautiful combination and I wish I had changed over to it years ago. However, I find that when I use any kind of heat styling tool, it causes a yellowing to the hair; Even on the lowest heat settings. Now, I don't have to use heat tools, and I don't most of the time, but I work in an office setting and there are times I just want to look my best, like for presentations, meeting new clients, etc. I find that the heat tools just provide me with a smoother, silkier look to my hair, but the trade-off is the yellow tinge that results, even with the use of a heat protective spray. . I can combat the yellow with a silver shampoo and/or leave-in toner treatments, but there is such a fine edge to leaving it on the hair long enough to get rid of the yellow, but not too long that I end up with a lavender hue that I don't like. Is there something that I can use to just prevent the yellowing in the first place?
Could it be that its actually the products you are using (perhaps even the heat protectant) that is actually turning yellow and not your hair itself? Its also possible that minerals in your water that are deposited on your hair are interacting with the heat. I would try clarifying your hair very well, then do a test patch with no product and see what happens.
Justin really appreciate this video on long hair. I have long hair but as you get older it since and I have asked many times my hairdresser to cut layers in it but the answer is no it will make it thinner. Very rarely do you have a full thick head of hair when you’re older. Obviously with the pandemic my hair is as you would say too long. I’d love to send you a photo to see what you think I concentrate on colour and condition but unfortunately layers are a big no-no unless you can tell me differently?
Thanks for the heads up! I noticed that when a few other people mentioned it but I can't change it unless I take the video down and re upload a new one. That will mess with the reach of the video so I can't do it. Thank you though!
JG Alegria I sprayed my roots with AGEbeautiful (I think there are many kinds of root touch up sprays). It was an annoying process (not gonna lie). It took me 4 months or so of root spray touch ups then I cut it into a pixie. It was that route or getting it highlighted to blend in with my hair color which was a medium brown. The contrast between white and darkish brown was HUGE and I was not going to ruin my hair by highlighting. You may not have that issue. Everyone is different.
Love your ideas and how generously you say it. I am close to 68. My hair is naturally white with great shine. I’ve always wanted long hair. Your tips have me good ifeas on how to have my hair cut. Thanks
I have pretty much rocked long hair for the majority of my life. For me personally, my hair is my spiritual antenna so I want to keep growing it out. I take biotin to help with hair growth and put different types of oils on the ends like coconut oil and rosemary oil. I also stay away from any type of heat on my hair unless it's a special occasion. If anything, my long hair makes me look younger. Long hair will never go out of style, it's like a classic black dress in your wardrobe. I do appreciate the tips even though I don't completely agree with you. Much love and light!
Thank you! I always appreciate another opinion. And I definitely appreciate someone who can agree to disagree. We all have our different insights and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Thank you so much for the feedback and I appreciate your support on the video!
Hi! Just popped in and your title of the video lured me in! I changed my style from long and dull to shaggy layers and bangs! I absolutely love it! I have thick dark red hair and the layers lightened the weight as well as softened the look. I’m too scared to cut my own bangs so still going to salon. Thank you for all your tips!
Going platinum/ very light blond, was the best thing I ever did with my hair. I have all white roots so that there’s never any jarring contrast between my roots and hair color. By the way, music seemed fine, nice background, not too loud, I thought it was just right. While I did see 3 or 4 older women in the photos you presented, many more older women photos, demonstrating what you were talking about, would have been nice.
Thank you! I hear ya with the photos. It’s really hard finding photos that illustrate my points and I’m allowed to use (that don’t cost $100’s per photos). I appreciate that feedback and support! Stay well!
Very good timing. I have just become fed up with my long hair because I haven't gotten it shaped. Now I'd like to get some long layers and bangs or pieceness put in to the front, like yesterday.
Love this! At 68, I have been through all these changes, longer, shorter, layered, differences in color, etc. I could have used a bit of guidance like this along the way.
Thank you Libby!!! I truly appreciate that! Side note: One of my very favorite clients was named Libby. She passed away suddenly last year, but she was an absolute light of happiness for all that had the pleasure of knowing her. Totally random but I had to say that when I saw your name. :)
Your information and expertise is greatly appreciated. As far as people voicing complaints over your skilled, time-tested (25 years!) and professional experience, if they’re here simply to criticize, they have the option to find another channel. The last thing I would do is to be concerned about that. Thank you for your time, effort to help us, and the fantastic tips. 😘
DISCLAIMER!!! There's a NEW version of this video WITH NO BACKGROUND MUSIC where I share some of these tips and some new ones to help you look more youthful in long hair. Make sure you check it out here! th-cam.com/video/8djrP46l2JA/w-d-xo.html
Hello Justin, thank you so much for your lovely response to my sad hair story at my son’s wedding. I really appreciated your words, it was so kind of you to take the time. I deleted my post, and was hoping you hadn’t read it yet, but you had. Sorry. Blessings to you and your family Justin, and thank you again☺️😊
Awesome ideas. Letting my salt and pepper grow in. Who knew it was so beautiful! Am loving it. Embracing my waves also and haven’t blew out my hair in forever. I have lots of new hair growing where it was thinner! I think it has been just being kinder to my hair. What do you think?
Awesome! That’s a great question. It could be due to a lot of things. I actually just read a study this morning that was talking about how if gray hair is induced by stress relieving that same stress can help reduce the actual gray hair. They were talking about how it could revert back to pigmented hair. It’s crazy with that can do, so who knows if that is playing a role as well maybe?
Hi Justine, love from NYC- One thing that really works for curly long hair is deep conditioning with a hair mask. I like the Curl Mix line and Shea Moisture products. One thing that I love about having longer hair is the movement and how it feels when the wind is blowing through it. Peace out xoxogena
Great tips for long hair! I totally agree that styling is the key to a polished, and good products make all the difference for a youthful look. The video on fringes (bangs) was so helpful. I wish I lived in Portland, I’d race to your salon in a flash. Keep your tips coming 👋🏼🇦🇺🦘
Hi Justin, I’m so happy I found your channel! All my life I’ve straighten or blow dry my hair to eliminate my curls. But last year right before the lockdown (CA) I’ve decided to let it be natural. I have 3B &3A (Italian/Greek/Mexican), medium thickness & tons of it. Due to pandemic my hair is too long one length, which I hate because it’s very heavy. Would like to cut it to shoulder length with layers, that’s my go to but in the past I never allowed my curls to show. I’ve finally for the first time love my spiral curls💕 but don’t know if layers would work. Can you please do a video for curly gals, options? Please. Thank you. Stay Safe & Well!
Thank you! Welcome to the fam! I will definitely be doing some videos on curly hair in the future. As far as layers go...yes. They’re a very good option!
I’m 54 no grey hair and it’s long. I have a long shag and I love it. I have tons of movement in it and it’s fun to play with. I get lots of compliments on it. I enjoy your videos Thanks for your tips.
I decided a few years ago to stop doing full colour, and just use high and low lights to blend with my incoming grey. It is way less maintenance for me not having to have a root re-touches every 2-3 weeks. I also find keeping some volume on the top and and a bend in my hair with layers really helps to camouflage or complement the grey nicely. And I agree, keeping your hair hydrated makes it more youthful looking.
Thanks for this video You’re awesome. I like to have my hair high lighted with different shades of blond and I always use a purple shampoo to avoid brassiness. I like the pulled back look with the softness around the face. I feel fresh and youthful with that style. Good posture and a nice smile speak volumes about how you feel about yourself. Thanks again for your video. Keep them coming !!!
nice video, with one exception for me. I have naturally curly hair, and do not use any flat irons or round brushes to smooth it! Curly hair is beautiful!
For me, just growing out my blunt bob (with a fringe) to long hair in the past years, now being 45, has made a big difference. I was hoping to hear more colouring tips in general, as not everyone goes salt and pepper at all. I'm also happy to notice that the "you must cut your hair short and auntie-style after the age X" has slowly faded away. I love my long hair, and learning to use flat irons next; thanks for the video for it. Future wishes: would like to see more example images and visuals. Thanks for all the fine hair info, too. subscribed.
Thank you for sharing the tips, Justin. I have been growing my hair out for the first time since I was a teenager and struggle with the right cut that is complementary to my features. I have a very healthy fully grown-out head of hair, meaning I do not add color. It is the healthiest it has ever been, and I feel it is a striking feature for me, except finding the right hairstyle/cut. I will look through your video library to see more tips for a style etc. Thanks again.
At 56 and having nightmare frizzy/curly hair my entire life, and having hairstylists wanting to do 1 thing: straighten, I’ve finally come to accept the frizz and be proud of my wild, natural style. Strangely, I get compliments frequently, because even though it’s frizzy, despite having used almost every product available, the layered cut keeps it full and looking like I have more hair than I do. I keep it well conditioned and focus on dimensional color. I think “frizzy” is actually a texture that people have been made to feel bad about.
They're straightening it not so that you look better but so they can charge you more for their work. Keep your gorgeous full head of hair and wear it however you want, not however they want to charge you for it
Fantastic video with helpful tips . I have long platinum hair I have noticed that I dont have the body in my hair when I was coloring it . Use specific products for silver/gray hair. thanks for sharing your tips.
I just discovered your videos a few days ago. Loving all the tips ❤️ I'm 40 and have had really long hair for years. I cut it every so often but always end up growing it back out. I wish I could have layers but my hair is way too long. So I stick to angles around the face and a side bang. Makes me feel like I have somewhat of a style lol.
Awesome! Thank you so much. I really appreciate the support. I totally hear what you’re saying with really long hair and layering, but it sounds like you’re on the right track with the face framing layers.
I liked this video. It was somewhat informative. I am 63 and wear my hair long. It is curly/wavy. I have completely transitioned to silver and grey hair and love the color. I do wear a lot of ponytails when at home. I have a hair appointment in April and now I am considering some face framing layers and letting them hang out when I put up my ponytail. Thank you
Blessed to have great hair genes on both sides of the family. At almost 65 I still have thick long hair. My hair has some volume but is straight with a wave. Hard to keep a curl long without spray but I blow it dry and tie it up in a bun and then when it comes down it's all curls and volume without hair spray. I was a gorgeous natural long haired blonde until I started fading to a mousey light brown in my 40's. I get my hair highlighted every 3 months with low lights and high lights to mimic what was my natural hair. I am just starting to go grey and my roots actually make my hair look blonder as my natural high lights are still there. I part my hair in the middle but always have it professionally cut in layers that pull my face/cheek bones upward. I look good with my pulled back and up too. With the corona virus I am leaving it alone and the roots are coming in blonde and silvery. There are streaks so it looks good so far. Use Nexus products. Thank you. I subscribed.
Blow drying at the root of my crown! That has been a game changer and blow drying at the roots in the opposite direction to provide more volume and height at the base
I have very long hair for most of my life. I’m 64 years old and for a few years now my hair has been thinning, mostly on top. I wear my hair up at work and I have some hair breakage around my face from it. Here’s the most unusual thing. My hair is graying in the front around my face and salt and pepper in the back. What I don’t understand is my hair from my chin down to my waist is my natural color of medium chestnut brown! I wear bangs and trim my own hair for years now. I used to color my hair blond many, years many years ago so I can’t understand why the ends are brown now. So strange. I asked my doctor and she has no answers for me. Love your videos and thanks for all the tips for long hair. I think I need to shorten mine so I can get the flowing hair I want to have. I get many compliments on my hair but I also get bored wearing it pinned up all the time too.
SmartCookiesDontCrumble I also have exactly the same as you , my hair is natural what they used to call chestnut brown , I also have the grey and the salt and pepper , why has my hair gone black with the grey in the middle very strange ,I put it down to medication,
I recently added some curtain bangs because I have to wear my hair back for work, a modern day bridgette bardot look, it has added so much style to my look and I love them! I also want to add some highlights to soften my dark hair and add some dimension. As I get older the long dark hair isn’t as flattering as it used to be.
I have a bob because my hair is fine... it definitely has helped to look thicker and more youthful... I tried the curly girl method for over a year... I try to keep changing... my next change is to fly to you!.., 😂😂😂😂... I wanted to try doing the natural look too!... the picture of the woman you showed, her hair is gorgeous!... love her color!... thank you for a great video as always!!!!💜💜💜💜💜
I finally grew out my gray hair..I had it cut very short and it's very easy to manage. I do however missed long hair, which I hope doesn't make me look older..It'snot completely gray, but have several variations of gray color. It differently complements my flawless olive complexion..
Hi Justin! I'm turning 50 this year and my hair is long I have heard from stylists that body size.. plus size. has alot to do with length and hair? Opinion /thoughts would be appreciated
Hey Roxanne. I think it can definitely effect it all but I don’t believe it dictates it. I believe it’s far more about the face shape, hair texture and most importantly, the persons comfort zone. The best length is the one you feel most confident in. Hope that helps a little!
This has some really great ideas and insight. Justin could you please deal with red hair fading to white...almost look blond now halfway down my back and bangs. What style? Should I color it?
I have some curl to my hair, but sometimes it gets frizzy. Can you suggest a product to use to maintain curl without weighing it down and not too costly. I don’t want to straighten my hair all the time because it damages it. Any suggestions?
That’s a great question. There are a lot of products out there that can do what you’re wanting. I need to do a video on a few that I really like. It’s also about how you use them as well though. Have you had a chance to check out my video about how to manage curly hair? I think you’d really like it. I’d love to hear your feedback.
“As we get older hair tends to change texture snd become more course and frizzy”...wow you are certainly not talking to me or many of my friends in our mid to late fifties. Change in texture yes, but the attributes are skinny, feather light, fly away, loss of volume, and stick straight.
Depends on the person, for sure. I’m 35, but I already notice mine is getting more coarse and frizzy every year! I have some grays, so I feel like that contributes.

I'm 53 and love my blonde colored hair, which is naturally straight, but I still flatiron it and it makes all the difference. My hair is super thin, but somehow it still works, as long as I flatiron it, which makes the style last for 3-4 days. If I didn't flatiron, it would look stragley. I only wash my hair every 4 days and that also helps a lot.
It's impressive that you don't want to cut my hair. I trim my split ends at home because I don't trust most stylists if I walk in with hair down to my low hip. But braids are easy, and I look forward to being seventy and rocking the long grey braids or the silver coronet.
Thank you! Absolutely, I don’t agree that every person on earth needs to have short hair. There are benefits to both short and long, but at the end of the day a person needs to do what they’re going to feel most comfortable in. Thanks for the feedback.
I don’t have gray hair even though I am soon to be 43 and I was so agains changing something that “was no broken” BUT you are right that a change either in style or color can be HUGE!! I wen from layered brown straight hair to layered hair with big waves and an auburn color that suits me and makes me look younger so I for one agree with your tips - thanks for sharing your knowledge!!!!! (Especially about deep conditioners)
Im 51 and love long hair so I needed this. So tired of stylists always wanting to do the mommy hair cut on my long hair. I also don't think that turning 50 means you have to cut all your hair off! I love his suggestions. This might be my new favorite channel.
Dont believe that bull
I turn 52 in June and for the last couple years have been wearing mermaid extensions. 👍🏻
It the same with 60 or 70 it’s your hair and your hear no one else gets a say in it
These videos are great , one suggestion could you quiet down the background music it’s hard to focus on what you are saying. :)
Absolutely! I noticed that after I had a few other folks mention it. I edited that video without my headphones in usually use and I won’t make that mistake again! Lol. Thanks for the feedback!
lose the music otherwise great!
Justin Hickox excellent! Nothing worse than having someone I actually WANT to hear talk and music overpowers their genius! Thx for being open.
PS: Nice to find someone else that talks as fast as I do LOL! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Loving the video & Beats 👍
Justin Hickox also you spelled ‘change’ wrong- you spelled it ‘chage’.
Why use young models when your talking to older women?
Exactly
My immediate thought also...sad for us to feel less attractive due to hyper-youth displays...
Exactly - this isn’t helpful at all lol
Ohhh yeaaaa
Bravo.
Would love to see quick updos for those of us over 50 with long hair and must wear it up for work...
That’s funny, I just did a segment on a local television show about that exact topic. I’ll have to make a video on it soon. Thanks for the suggestion.
Braids work really well. Also pull hair back like your putting in ponytail then twist and secure with non slip fastener.Works good with long hair not layered. Also been trying cloth head bands works well for the front of your hair.
Come over to : Long Hair Silver Sisters on fb. I run it and you will find some great tips and SUPPORT.

@@justinhickoxDid you ever do a video on this topic? I would love to see it!
More power to you 🙂
That's what counts! I also think unique looks make a difference. I refuse to ever get the "old lady pixie cut" cuz - everyone has it!
Yes! Love it! I grew my hair out during the pandemic lockdown after years of buying into the idea I shouldn’t let my hair get too long. I discovered I loved it so much and have continued to let it grow to my waist. I’m keeping it this long even though I’m in my 50s.
@@hopecreekranch365 I'm 71 and my hair is to my waist, it's also turned a blonde grey almost platinum....I love it!
Show more pictures of what your explaining, I’m visual and it’s hard to know exactly what you mean
I totally understand, I’m very visual as well. It’s surprisingly hard to find photos online that aren’t super expensive that I can use because of copyright concerns. It would be very easy to spend thousands of dollars on one video just to find every perfect picture. So I add The best photos I can find within reason to display my point.
Justin Hickox I guess I didn’t know about copyright infringements on pictures!
@@justinhickox Maybe take pictures of your clients' hair? Although you probably have to have them sign something first. Just a thought...
Me too! Show us what is right and what is wrong!!! Hair cuts!

I think using highlights and low lights gives you a more youthful look.
I can absolutely agree!
Thank you!!! I love that.
I have had bangs for 20 years and recently grew them out and cut in long layers. The extra softness around my face with some chin length layers made such a difference. Movement and shape is definitely key.
Nice, I’m glad you like your new look. And I appreciate the support and feedback.
The smiling a lot part is a HUGE pro! Not nearly enough people out there do that!
PS, my hair is to my waist, too!

Justin Hickox and maybe a video for solutions for thinning hair?
@@justinhickox Is it possible to shape long, very fine hair? Kinda like the shag haircuts of the 60s/70s? Thanks!
Fine hair & I don’t want a “bob” lol
@@lorece94 I have blonde fine hair and always looked great in shag haircuts! I really miss them.
62 years young, started going grey, adding grey highlights with brunette, let it grow long (mid back), it has a wave and ringlets when I air dry, very full.
Not sure what else to do with it, get lots of compliments. Thank you for the video. Loved it.
Sounds like you’re doing great with it!!! Well done!
Just found you. (recently retired Cosmetologist) Your videos are wonderful. Don't change a thing and don't dumb it down. I'll be binge watching, thank you.
Thank you SO much! I always think it’s SUCH a massive honor to have other stylists as a part of the community! How long were you behind the chair?
I loved my waist length hair with the short feathered look in the 80s.
My hairdresser suggested an updated version of that. It's basically long bangs that I brush back and set with Mousse or spray. We were both happy with the outcome!
when you didn't even notice the background music until you came down to the comments and now that's all i can hear
Dang! Sorry about that! I so wish I could change it now!
Justin Hickox don’t worry about it, didn’t bother me in the least.
Same here lol
I'm 75. 15 years ago I looked at my roots and discovered my dad's SILVER.
I went natural silver 15 years ago and never regretted it, but it's too long now due to pandemic. Silver fox forever!!
Hi, what oils did you use on your scalp?
Same here. I'm 70 with salt & pepper. I planned to spruce it up with blue, purple etc colors on silver but it refuses to completely grow out. I'm now told women would pay big $ to have my medium length salt/pepper hair. I'll never get the "old lady pixie do".
Good to hear a guy who doesn't want to cut our long tresses off.
I definitely think it’s the shape (not just the length) that makes a great style on someone. Long or short is about the person not the age or anything else?
Yes!!!!
I thank God my daughter became a hairdresser. My hair is long. She won’t cut it. She simply takes care of it for me.
Very tired of people saying women over fifty should cut their hair.
It all depends on the condition of YOUR hair.
It depends on the cut-some long hair is atrocious
exactly...I am 67 and live in an independent community living building for seniors.
Can’t wait to hear how it turns out if you decide to try it!
yeah that's nice,i like you comment,I'll send you hair from Brazil, just a gift...how are you?
Im 57 and love my hair long ...ive worn it short when younger even had a pixie. ..but im now into my longer hair its feminine soft sexy ...im a natural redhead and really appreciate it now more than everrrr ...love all your content 💝💝
Love the tip on “highlighting” by adding dark into salt/pepper hair!!
Hey! Thank you! It’s super subtle and it makes a HUGE impact. I believe many times, it’s the little things that add up to create the big differences. Thanks for the feedback!
Lowlights?
I found after washing and letting my hair dry for a while, I use large Velcro rollers. When I first taken them out, my hair is a little too puffy, but it settles down and actually looks fantastic several hours later or the next day. I can put a pony tail in with fabric scrunching to quicken this process. Something about the Velcro rollers smooths all the frizzies in my salt n pepper hair. No heat needed which is a plus. Thank you.
That’s fantastic! If it works for ya, keep it up! Thanks for sharing that!
Lol he's so worried hes going to say something to offend someone. What have you people done to him?? 🤣 All good man! 👍
It's long haired people, that is who he is afraid of offending. They are really hard to deal with.
This was really useful, thank-you. I have just turned 50 and realise I haven't changed my brown, mid length hair for years! It does make you nervous to change though! I don't have bangs so I will check out your video now for bangs. Thank-you!
Awesome Michelle. Thank you so much for the feedback! Can’t wait to hear what you think about that video
You're so informative, stylish, sincere and intelligent! I haven't been so glad to stumble across a tube in a long time. Much love! Can't wait for what's next, and love that you talk about color and you love to move around the studio
Thank you so much! That’s very kind. I truly appreciate that support! Thank you
I have long hair that has thinned some with age.I add a few hair extensions ....what a big difference that makes. I feel like I’m in my 30’s again!! Love your videos 😀
Thank you so much Ava! Yeah, extensions for volume is a big thing! People love them. Glad to hear they’re working so well for ya!
Extensions can ruin natural hair.
Oh my gosh your heart for people is so sweet. I can tell from the video but also your responses. Thanks for doing what you do
Thank you so much! I appreciate that. I feel like I owe people the same time they're giving me, so trying to respond to all the comments is the least I can do! :)
Wish I was closer to Portland! It’s SO hard to find a stylist who fits your needs, so much trial and error.
I appreciate that vote of confidence!! 💪🏼🙏
Thank you Pamela! I’m glad you liked the video. I appreciate the support and feedback! Stay well!
Thank you so much for that! I truly truly appreciate that feedback. And I really appreciate the support. You’re awesome!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that support.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the feedback. Can’t wait to hear how the Bangs turn out.
Thank you! I truly appreciate the feedback. I’ll definitely keep in mind for future video, I appreciate the suggestion.
Thank you! I'm getting my hair cut in 10 days. It's been long and straight for a long time. I can't wait to have bangs and some sassy layers again!
I’m not a hairstylist , however I totally agree with all your tips! I mean everything you said is just the honest truth! 👏🏻❤️👏🏻
Thank you! That means a lot to me! 🙏
Why were most the models “young “. I’ read the title of the video as being for older woman. Interesting interpretation.
I completely agree with you...you need to style your hair and you need to do it on a regular basis. Many women that have long hair, they wind up putting their hair in a ponytail and it just looks sloppy and lazy. I think a slide part looks super youthful 🦋🌺❤️🌈
Thank you! I appreciate that! And yes, a side part can be a great look.
I always say if it doesnt turn out to your liking you can always grow it back
I agree 1000% with this. It absolutely depends on so many factors and it is very individual.
balayage helped me to look younger. I started doing it 5 years ago and think it was the best decision. it gives some movement and volume. also, by experimenting a bit with the length I discovered that at my current age I prefer having my hair 5-10cm shorter than I used to have earlier. it is still long hair but makes me feel younger and more stylish.
I wish he would of talked about fine hair and it getting “finer” as you age. Otherwise very informative.
Thank you Justin, your vids are great and I enjoy your delivery and outward confidence as an authority on hair and styling.
Thank you so much! I’m really glad you like them. I appreciate the support.
Thank you for showing which flat iron you use. I ordered it and it showed up the next day
I only had to run it through my hair once. On 350 . Was only 100 .
Thank you Thank you.
Yup, mine is long and salt and pepper! Easy peasy. Can be wavy if the humidity is up. Straight in the winter. You just never know how it will turn out!
Love it! It’s like a lottery! lol!
@@justinhickox that's it!! I have lotto hair! Haha! Thanks.
Liked your video and a good confirmation of what I'm doing with my longer, fuller s&p hair: wash, condition, serum then towel dry and let air dry in a loose bun. Sure it takes a while and the results are worth it. Silky soft and shinier hair!
That’s awesome! I’m so glad it’s working for you. I appreciate the feedback.
Thank you for checking it out!!!!! I appreciate the feedback and insight!!
I grew out my hair (it’s white). It looks awesome and I get tons of compliments. Btw, don’t forget to put an “n” in change in your video.
JG Alegria I sprayed it with AGEbeautiful root spray for about 4 months then I had my hair cut into a short pixie.
Awesome! I really appreciate that feedback. Thanks for the support.
Don't cut your hair, you're a beautiful loving women...
Stay well!
Coloring my hair after years of working black hair really makes me look younger and youthful
Thank you!! You did amazing job with your hair advice
Coconut oil on the weekend Hair is amazing for rejuvenating.
It definitely gives some shine right! Thanks for that feedback.

You are so sweet! Glad I found you. It is not the most common name for sure :))

How about tips for natural-silver/white/gray hair?
Julie A. Hey Julie! Great idea! Anything specific you’re looking for insight on when it comes to natural silver hair?
@@justinhickox Hi! I would like tips on smoothing the hair without using high heat as it can yellow my hair.
Love your videos! 🥰 (noticed a typo in the word Change...) thought I’d mention it , hope you don’t mind 😉
Yes....very cool indeed!
Love it! Thanks for that feedback!!! Definitely great points.
I enjoy your videos
Thanks for your tips.
Your are SPOT on! Especially with the styling. Thanks for the feedback!
I hate the fact that ppl can nit pick on your videos. I feel greatful for all your advice.
Thank you! And you’re SO right! A smile is the most youthful and beautiful thing ANYONE can wear in my opinion! :)
nice video, with one exception for me. I have naturally curly hair, and do not use any flat irons or round brushes to smooth it! Curly hair is beautiful!
I agree! Curly hair is beautiful.
Thanks for all the fine hair info, too. subscribed.
Absolutely. I appreciate the feedback and suggestions. I’ll definitely be doing more videos on color for sure.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you liked it I appreciate the support.
That's awesome! Sounds like you did get some great genes! Thanks for the support! Welcome to the fam!
Blow drying at the root of my crown! That has been a game changer and blow drying at the roots in the opposite direction to provide more volume and height at the base
Awesome! I appreciate the feedback. I’m glad you agree with this and it works for you!
Hey! Thank you. That IS very interesting. I don’t think I’ve ever come across that before. Love to hear what’s going on if you ever find out for sure.
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback. Yes, darker hair can be tough in some situations
Thank you Linda! As always, I appreciate the feedback!!
I find when I gently pull my hair back and give it a twist the highlights look pretty. You are wise with hair and women. I guess all those years show.
Thank you! I truly appreciate that.

My hair is super thin, but somehow it still works, as long as I flatiron it, which makes the style last for 3-4 days. If I didn't flatiron, it would look stragley. I only wash my hair every 4 days and that also helps a lot.
That’s SO key! So many people miss the potential of flat ironing straight hair. I use it on almost every client! Thanks for the feedback!
