Haz, you just surprised me for the first time! You said high quality food and in the same sentence Royal Canin!!! In the UK we consider this one of the worst foods you can purchase. Most GSD's react really badly to this. It's one of the foods that vets recommend here due to their sponsorship they receive from RC. Horrendous stuff! Fish based diet fully agree with you on. 👍💪.

Please keep Kevin. The way a CO bonds with their leader is something special. You taught him what life is, and im sure that he would LOVE to spend the rest of his life with you.
I 100% trust that you would home him appropriately, but it bums me out when "pack oriented" dogs lose their pack.
Either way, good job! I love seeing the CO handled appropriately. Too many of them live a life of confusion because people fall in love with the fluff

❤ Kevin, such an amazing dog! Glad he's recovering & getting back to his old self. Should def keep him, he clearly trusts & has bonded with you. Oddly my dog had a similar situation flare up a while back & found out he's got a poultry/chicken allergy and my vet basically said same thing you have recommended a fish protein based diet whether it be a salmon kibble or raw, worked wonders.

He was a pomeranian, Chihuahua, mini American eskimo, min pin with a trace of German Shepherd, 19lbs and despite all the annoying breeds he had in him except for shepherd, He was the coolest and most well-rounded dog I have ever had. I miss him every single day. So hard to find a dog that is smaller, not micro-sized, that is not a little s***

I am very happy to hear that KEVIN is now doing well after such a scary health situation. If I were you, I simply would do what is obviously best for him. Since YOU & KEVIN HAVE SUCH A FANTASTIC RELATIONSHIP it just seems to me that YOU & KEVIN BELONG TOGETHER ❤!! I don't believe that KEVIN can have any better life with anyone but YOU, HANDS DOWN!!! I say this to you as a breeder & trainer of champion Rottweilers with over 40 years of experience in the placement of dogs with very specific temperaments. As you know, certain breeds are very specific in their temperaments & simply do not 'TAKE' to other people than the ONE they have decided THEY WANT TO BE WITH. I have followed your journey with KEVIN since he was first brought to you. I believe KEVIN HAS DECIDED TO BE WITH YOU & I BELIEVE THAT IS WHAT IS BEST FOR KEVIN, RESPECTFULLY. PLEASE ALLOW KEVIN REMAIN WITH THE PERSON HE HAS CHOSEN TO BE WITH, KEVIN LOVES YOU, HE HAS GIVEN HIS HEART TO YOU. THANK YOU, FROM THE HEART ❤

Love that dog! My JRT has tons of problems with his diet. He’s allergic to grass of all things but I have to cook his food he doesn’t get kibble or any dog food. His treats for Training or Cheerios. They’re pretty neutral and don’t bother him at all. He gets basmati rice, green beans and other vegetables plus turkey that I cook. He has probiotics also. It’s a big chore though if you have a big dog like that.

Some dogs can't tolerate raw food as well as others from my personal experience, and in Kevin's case it could just be an ingredient allergy issue. That being said, I've had good success with freeze dried raw food with many dogs! Also I've frequently used the brand VitalEssentials as training treats because they are small pieces and have single ingredient protein products such as rabbit, duck, salmon, beef, and turkey. They used to have liver and tripe ones but not sure if they still make them. I'm sure there are similar brands now days. Also bite sized jerky pieces can be good single source protein treats as well.

Ours will be 2 in a couple of weeks, a few months ago in the heat he got into a puddle in the bush and drank what looked like brown/black pudding. And got sick as hell, off to the vet and the petite young assistant says I'll take him in the back. I tell her politely that he weighs more than her, is WAY stronger and not being himself may not be the best behaved while being prodded. The Doctor comes in and asked if I minded coming in the back with Charlie ?
Of course not. Good choice doc

I work at a dog rescue. We feed a bunch of foods because it gets donated. In my experience, the dogs do NOT do well on royal canine. They do do well on Costco food (except the weight management....they alllll do horrible on that worst food yet). Everyone always does really well on proplan too. Surprisingly, they do well on Eukanuba too.

My dog has had 3 episodes of AHDS…acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome.. She has been on Open Farm wild-caught salmon w/ancient grains…I can also give her cooked scrambled egg for extra protein…she can have treats like cod skins, one ingredient cod cookies. She stays on Fortiflora and I also use Native Pet pumpkin, apple. After much research, trial and error ..I am pretty satisfied with her diet. CANNOT eat any raw or freeze dried meats…Open Farm kibble is also great for a rotation diet…I can change protein with no transition… food sensitivity in dogs is very challenging and I refuse to put her on a prescription diet…too much junk and additives in all of them…my feeling is that a hookworm infestation caused all her problems…she was a rescue from a hoarder in WV..USA. Good luck with Kevin. Lots of great fish-based foods out there!!!!

Ime, Natural Balance fish (salmon) and sweet potato grain free LID is a Godsent for many dogs with sensitivities, provided they are not allergic to the sweet potato...
Some dogs can have reactions to the probiotics (and enzymes) as well...with dogs with sensitive systems it's a tight rope for sure.
Love watching you and Kevin hang out ❤

My CO girl(2years) has an extremely sensitive stomach. If she gets ahold of anything other then kibble “Royal Canid”for Giant dogs or Purina Pro Plan she suffers. She can have a fingertip size piece of cooked hamburger, any more she vomits and has Diarrhea for days. Dr. Marty’s freeze dried food for treats is safe. She sure as heck can’t vacuum up the kitchen floor like every other dog I’ve had. I’ve never had a situation like this. She loves cooked green beans. I’ll give her up to 2. She will eat dog 💩 when she can get to a fresh one🤮and doesn’t get sick. I’ve been inconsistent with correcting her because she’s outsmarted me. And yes I’ve had to tweak my use of the Ecollar in the beginning. Extremely sensitive.

The image with you and Kevin says more then 1000 words - he adores you. This brings me to an theory: could it's sickness be related to the fact that you were away? Dogs can react very violently to being left "alone" for a longer time.
About diet, fish is a good idea to bring him back to its former self.
In Europe, at least, Royal Canin is not considered the best choice (to put it kindly).
From my experience with our shepherd dog (fun fact: Ovcharka means also "shepherd dog") the best results we got is with BARF feeding (Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods) - I know, it's more time consuming and more expensive, but we never got any digestive problems of any kind and I consider he is worth it. But, to be realistic, this may not be an option for somebody who has several (many) dogs.

Royal Canin is not high quality lol. But glad Kevin is doing better. My working line black GSD has a pork allergy. He was very ill for some time. I did a home cooked diet for him so I could know for sure. Some brands add things they don’t list. Merrick for instance puts pork fat in ALL formulas, even those that say limited ingredient. I have to be super careful because he loses hair, gets secondary staph infections in the groin, yeast infections, and bad diarrhea, weight loss etc.

Thats only my humble opinion anyway.
