He is similar to my rescue dog, Mountain. He was an obese stray. I adopted him after he sat at the shelter for 5 weeks without being reclaimed. He's about 10 years old. I call him my walking ottoman. 🤣 He was 75 pounds and is 64.4 pounds now. He's still quite wide. Vet wants him 60 pounds and then reassess to decide what his ultimate goal needs to be. If my old guy Mountain can lose it, this cutie Snuffalupagus can do it too! He's absolutely adorable.
We adopted a 9 year old English Lab/Mastiff mix in May 2016. When we adopted him, he weighed 115 lbs., down from 119. Poor baby couldn't even hike his leg. By August, he was down to 80 lbs. This is a dog who never met a meal he didn't like, and ate every meal as though it were his last.
Mufasah, I have adopted many dogs of all types. My most recent is Robyn, a B&W Aussie Shep Humane Society picked up from the street. Ten years (est) at adoption, needing a couple of surgeries & extreme arthritis. Now 3.5 years later she is happy, well-adjusted and far healthier. Aren't Senior doggies great?!! Woof! 🐶😉💓
The way his face looked before you finishing tidying, my thoughts were "you turned this doodle into an oversized terrier!" Very cute dog, and amazing groomer, as always.
Yeah, as she groomed him, I was thinking "terrier crossed with lab?" Which would also explain his size, cause labs are very food motivated. @@jennyanswer42
His Groom turned out good. I understand that these grooms aren't always going to be perfect, but the most important thing is your helping these fur babies.🐾🐾🐾
He was so cute. You could tell most of that was really new to him. He just seemed like he was saying, “are you sure about this?” The whole time, all nervous and skeptical but trusting you anyway lol
Mr. Snuffleupagus has such a fitting name, because he definitely looks like the animal sidekick to a group of plucky children in a 80's adventure movie.
He seems fairly well socialized and well mannered! Also seems intelligent. Every time you introduce him to something new, he does seem initially startled, but he settles down as soon as he understands what's happening as long as it's not actively causing him physical discomfort.
I am a volunteer dog walker at the Niagara County SPCA ( American side). These dogs are so loving and even though we miss them when they are adopted it's so great to see them go to a new home. Thank you for all you do!
Oh, that’s not far from my neck of the woods! I volunteer at the SPCA in the city of Buffalo & I’m always shocked at how many beautiful, loving, loyal dogs & cats that are discarded like trash, for whatever reason. I’ve been volunteering at shelters since right out of HS, but it still amazes me how awful some people can be. We had someone surrender their 10 year old shepherd not too long ago…..then had the audacity to request an adoption form for a puppy. Thankfully that beautiful boy wasn’t with us long bc another volunteer’s brother gave him a forever home so he could live out his senior years with lots of love & in peace ❤
From a snuffleapagus to the most adorable thanksgiving turkey... he must have felt so much better after this! Thank you for all you do for rescue dogs.
Such a well-behaved, sweet chunky fluff. Hard to believe, this was his first groom. His previous owners obviously trained him well, but showed their love by giving him to many treats, poor thing. Also, loved the causal way he just slipped off the Happy Hoodie, as if to say: "Yeah, thanks, but no thanks." Hopefully, he'll be adopted soon by a family who takes him for long walks and plays around, so he can lose these lovehandles
Let's not forget obesity is a disease, diseases weaken you. That's why he may appear calm. He's too weak and too exhausted to react. It's a somewhat common method to overfeed or underfeed energetic, hyperactive or reactive dogs to weaken them and make them calmer. I'm sure the behavoiral issues will show up eventually - especially once he looses that weight.
💥💥 When you oil your blade, turn it to the side and pointing down. OIL exactly where the blades are agitating on each side. Forever Barber, believe me your blades will Thank you. ❤❤
@@Adierit I'm pretty sure the person you wrote to didn't mean that an energetic dog is a behavioral issue. They meant that behavioral issues that *may* be there, will come forward once he's healthy again and have the amount of energy a dog with a healthy weight has. But he may not have any problem behaviors at all, he might just be in dire need of some house training and getting used to long walks.
His coat doesn’t seem like any doodle….no curls, no softness. It almost seemed kind of wirey, like many terriers, even though his body is more like a Lab, though that tail doesn’t look like that of a Lab. My own Aussies aren’t fans of getting their nails or Grinch Feet trimmed; they will tap dance like this tickles.
His tail is wagging here and there, and he seems very good natured. I think he'll find a home quickly. Hopefully his future home is with someone who understands how important grooming is.
Anytime a dog that normally keeps a long coat is shaved, I always have the reaction of, "He's naked!!" Kinda like when you remove their collar. What a good boy, though! Good luck, Snuffleupagus and great job, Vanessa! ♥
Reminds me so much of my uncle's dog, he took her from the shelter and she looked so much like him, she was such a sweet and lovable girl and so calm and patient, she was born around the same time as me and lived to be 17 even with her medical troubles she just ended up dying of old age thanks to how much my uncle cared for her, loved her so much.
He was a very good dog! Apart from being an extremely kind thing to do, this is genius as it shows potential adopters the dog's temperament in a highly stressful situation. I would adopt Snuffy in a heartbeat! As an aside, I cannot believe how brave, fast and precise you are when doing the eye area. I wouldn't be able to get anything done out of fear of cutting them. You're the best.
@mariahgrimes207 they definitely can. Take the attitude of "Fake it till you make it" and learn to be brave together. There are lots of really good tutorials for nail trimming. Or you can even teach him to accept a nail file or a dremel if clippers make you nervous. If you decide to use clippers, make sure they're the scissor type and not the guillotine type. Guillotine nail clippers can crush the nail to cut it instead of cutting right through cleanly so it could actually be hurting his quicks even if you don't accidentally cut the quick. Source: I've been a dog groomer for 6 years
I always get a little nervous watching her trim around the ears even and I imagine it's quite easy to feel where the ear ends and the fur begins. Great point about showing the dog's temperament. I was thinking already it would be good for adopters to see the video to know what the coat situation will be like but it is a great insight into his behaviour as well.
With a dog that thick- and long-haired, and that large, it’s very demanding physically and/or financially to maintain his fur in good shape. Some people are not able to do it even though they love the dog.
I think it’s important to give people some grace and assume, since this was an owner surrender, that something terrible must have forced them to give up this dog. We don’t know if it was a sudden struggler with money, a debilitating illness, depression… could be a lot of things that made it get this bad. I had to rehome my dog once when my living siituation became untenable, and it was one of the hardest-if not THE hardest--things I’ve ever had to do.
Mental health issues? Sudden disability issue? Maybe he was given as a pup to an older person and as he grew they couldn't continue to groom him? Livestock guardian dog that got loose and lost? I can think of many reasons how he could have gotten that way and none of them are "intentionally neglected". 😢 I hope and pray that he's able to be adopted by someone who is physically, mentally and emotionally prepared to consistently groom him. 😢❤🙏🏻
This dog was so well behaved, I have to believe someone showed him a lot of love, if not, adequate diet and grooming care. Perhaps they didn't know how, or couldn't care for him as well as they should, but once he got comfortable with you he seemed very happy to receive your attention. I hope his next owners continue the attention you paid to him and put him on a healthier diet.
We adopted an overweight collie from the Dogs Trust (UK) his elderly owner had died - we called him the furry coffee table too ❤😂 - put him on a diet and exercise regime, he couldn’t climb three steps or walk much at first. Then the first time he ran properly I cried and cheered like a loon!! I hope Snuffleuffagus has a great new home now xx
Aww, what an absolutely adorable dog! I would definitely want him fluffy, though I'd have to learn how to maintain his coat properly, of course. He is SUCH a good boy and I'm glad he found a forever home! All the snuggles and walkies for Snuffy and his new family.
Snuffy is absolutley adorable. He was nervous at first, but he understood you weren't going to hurt him. I had a Boston that HATED having his paws touched. I had to take him to the vet and even they had trouble. He literally screamed so loud he could be heard outside the clinic. And he was not being hurt. All that for a manicure. I still , 20 years later, miss my Jiggs.
Bless his fluffy heart! This boy sat so well for something he clearly has not had done often! I'd adopt him today if I could. Someone is going to be lucky with this dude!
We can see when he gets onboard with the groom. It's in the shower, just like you said, and when you're washing his face, he's like, "This is pretty nice!" I don't care why he got the way he did. Someone surrendered him to help him, and I hope he gets the forever home he deserves. Some family is going to luck out with this boi!
Snuffy looks like he's a Bouvier des Flanders mix.. Typical double coat issues when mixed with a Labrador. Wirey outer coat from hybrid gets the under coat matted, heat dysregulation and tendency to get overweight.. He's adorable.. Looks just like my girl. No mistaking that hair pattern.. 💛Wish I was closer, I'd SO adopt him!!!!
Comfortability with paws being touched is something that usually has to be taught from a very young age, and even if you teach them to tolerate it you can’t really teach them to like it. Most rescues especially don’t like their paws being touched because they aren’t used to it. I was really surprised by how calm and well behaved he was❤️
As a Canadian only a few hours away, I would adopt this boy in a heart beat if I had the space! I hope he doesn't stay in shelter too long, he's so sweet! Where ever he goes I wish for the best!
*THIS SWEET MAN IS STILL UP FOR ADOPTION!* He has an amazing temperament and would be great for younger teens who will walk him and doggy parents who will brush him daily❤
Poor Mr. S... watching you shave him was like watching a sheep shearing! The tail wag in the shower though is precious. He's so well behaved, all things considered!
What an awesome dog he is. Living at a shelter, coming to another strange place for a groom and was only s little twitchy about his front legs and face. He'll make some lucky person a great companion. You did a great job. I could almost feel the relief watching the dirty matted fur fall away. 👍
Poor baby. What a sweetheart. The fact that he was overfed likely means he was loved but in the wrong way by someone unable to care for him properly. Hope he finds a great home soon. ❤
The Humane Society is amazing to have rescued you. The same goes for Vanessa. Vanessa’s willingness to talk him up also helps with his and other’s adoption. You are an angel
For a rescued dog that's never been groomed, I'd say Mr Snuffleupagus was so much more well behaved compared to some of other owned dogs who were drama nominees lol. I suppose it's YOUR aura that helps him be calm and to know that you're there to help him. Dogs are truly the best.
Gosh, the way he wagged his tail when he got in the shower! He was obviously quite stressed on the grooming table but he was so good. His new owners will be very lucky to get such a sweet boy.
OMG! You are marvelous in grooming that neglected dog. It's good that this dog did not bite you. He made a noise of complaints but he looks like a good dog. Thank you so much for sharing your vlogs. I am learning how to cut the dog hairs from you. Take care and God bless. You got a very hard job. It's not for everyone's job to groom a dog. It takes a lot of patience and passion to care and love animals. The dog can sense it if he is being taken care of very gently. More power to you.❤
As of November 3rd, "Snuffy" is still listed as available for adoption on the website of the Niagara SPCA. I'd adopt him if I could but I'm in no position to take care of another dog: if you're in the same way, please consider making a donation to the shelter so that they can continue their mission of rescuing and finding safe, loving "fur-ever" homes for Snuffy and so many dogs (and cats!) like him.
What a good dog he was for you. I hope he gets a wonderful home soon. I rescued a northern dog two years ago. He was considered a community dog living in Dryden Ontario. Honestly he has been the best dog, well mannered and loves everyone we meet. Snuffleupagus deserves a home full of love as do all animals. Thank you Vanessa for all you do for the animals you support.
Its heartbreaking to see such a kind and mellow dog being referred to as disgusting. Especially because it's not his fault, he's not greedy or mean, just had bad humans.
As a groomer myself, I find that using those exfoliating gloves that we use in the shower, an awesome way to help with bathing. Especially for really dirty dogs. I love what you do and as I can no longer do this job, I miss it so much.
Snuffleupagus needs a propper meal plan indeed. He also ideally needs an opportunity to swim (water therapy) and be outdoors hiking to loose weight and feel comfortable again. The groomer did an exceptionally job as always. Thank you for giving him a splendid start to a new life!
This is the first dog that I genuinely feel like I would ask about the adoption process had I not lived on the other side of the world. I truly wish this nice little fella will find his forever home soon❤
GWTD: What gentlemanly behavior for a dog that has so obviously been neglected. He might start to get a complex if you continue to refer to his extra husky size. That boy is going to be a great dog for the "lucky" adopter. His expression with the second attempt of the Happy Hoodie is solid gold. All he needs is a proper meal plan, grooming, and lots and lots of love!

Great job on your dog! Every ounce they lost they gain in quality of life and longer lasting friendship.
For an old man I’m really proud of his weight loss! You’re an excellent owner and I’m sure he feels great with those nearly 11 lbs off!
Thank you for saving your sweet dog!!
Yeah! That is a very terrier face
Honestly he reminded me of a light skin Tramp from Lady and the Tramp XD
Yeah, as she groomed him, I was thinking "terrier crossed with lab?" Which would also explain his size, cause labs are very food motivated. @@jennyanswer42
@@tiarahatchett9192 I was thinking exactly that too.

His Groom turned out good. I understand that these grooms aren't always going to be perfect, but the most important thing is your helping these fur babies.🐾🐾🐾
The fact that he's so well behaved despite this being his first groom is a testament to his wonderful temperament. What a sweet boy.
Everything is a little scary at first, but I love how quickly he settles into each new thing.
He's so sweet! I wish I lived in the area, my partner and I are thinking about getting another dog I'd adopt this guy in a heartbeat.
I loved his "OMG you're KILLING me" expression for foot grooming.
@@terricolburn2011 yes. He settles into every new thing except feet. 😂
He's just looking around like "wow! I can see! This place is a mess!" He went from a chunky mop to an actual dog, and such a sweet boy!
It's always funny when dogs with bangs get them trimmed. You really can see them excited to be seeing.
I wish I could adopt him. He seems like a good, innocent soul.
He was so cute. You could tell most of that was really new to him. He just seemed like he was saying, “are you sure about this?” The whole time, all nervous and skeptical but trusting you anyway lol
You do a fantastic job. It's nice to watch someone who is really good at what they do.
Mr. Snuffleupagus has such a fitting name, because he definitely looks like the animal sidekick to a group of plucky children in a 80's adventure movie.
and Gus is great for short: D
He does also look like the Sesame Street character just without the trunk.
The rare short-snouted snuffleupagus, extra special. :-)
Named after my favorite and most rarely seen character on Sesame St. Big Birds imaginary friend
Those blades get so hot it can burn their skin
I love how everytime you do something new he has the exact same reaction of "AH! What's she doing to me?! ... Oh, oh that's actually really nice."
So HAPPY to read from the SPCA he was adopted a month ago! ❤ I hope it's working out very well. He seemed to be an absolute sweetheart of a dog. 🐩
He seems fairly well socialized and well mannered! Also seems intelligent. Every time you introduce him to something new, he does seem initially startled, but he settles down as soon as he understands what's happening as long as it's not actively causing him physical discomfort.
He is smarter than some of the humans
What a sweetheart, wish I was younger.
@@isitoveryet9525 we had 5 dogs adopted over the last few days. So great when they find good homes ❤️

From a snuffleapagus to the most adorable thanksgiving turkey... he must have felt so much better after this! Thank you for all you do for rescue dogs.
"adorable Thanksgiving turkey"😂 You nailed it!
Unrecognizable from his “before” photo. I would’ve thought it was a completely different dog-just wow.
@@plsstop7242 It's not a behavorial issue to be energetic, thats just normal dog behavior. They're literally meant to be out running around in packs.
@@plsstop7242LOL! Speak for yourself.
Aww poor guy. Its like watching a sheep being sheared his coat is so matted. Poor big guy.
He doesn't have an ounce of aggressiveness in him. I envy whatever family adopts this kind and handsome boy.
He’s obviously a very good-natured dog and you’ve done a super job with him. I’m so happy he’s already been adopted. Thank you, I enjoyed that.
Considering the amount of coat being buzzed off, he's really handling it all well.
He looked so happy and relieved afterwards. So good natured, what a lovely pup.
For being so uncomfortable, he's so good-natured and sweet. That tail wagging as he enters the bathtub - LOL
He’s such a good boy though! And so cute, even filthy.

"That was ambitious of you!" 🤣Honestly such a sweet pup 🥰
I get real nervous about toe nail trims.
I think the dog can sense it and freaks out?
I will never understand why anyone would neglect such a beautiful boy like Mr. Snuffleupagus. I hope he gets the best forever home.
Not knowing is what I assume for most of these older dogs, it seems very likely he was owned by an older person
My guess is his owner died.
I hope and pray that he's able to be adopted by someone who is physically, mentally and emotionally prepared to consistently groom him.
😢❤🙏🏻
i love how you talk to him like he's a favorite cousin , lovingly busting his chops while getting him ready for 'the prom'.
You truly are a wonderful lady for all of the rescue dogs you do at no cost 😏💐
Please let us know once Snuffleupagus gets adopted! And equally important, thank you, Vanessa, for giving him a groom.
It's in the shower, just like you said, and when you're washing his face, he's like, "This is pretty nice!"
I don't care why he got the way he did. Someone surrendered him to help him, and I hope he gets the forever home he deserves. Some family is going to luck out with this boi!
Very much agreed. Life conditions can change on a dime, like health, but he was obviously loved.
Right? He just realized, “oh, oh, i can actually feel that on my skin, holy crap”
So true! I do hope they are able to see what love he is getting now…❤
Poor dog. Thank you for caring for him.
I was really surprised by how calm and well behaved he was❤️
Most dogs don't like having their paws touched. I think it's more that it tickles than that it hurts.
@russlehman2070 Exactly ! It’s probably also got to do with it being a source of stability/balance for them

What an awesome dog he is. Living at a shelter, coming to another strange place for a groom and was only s little twitchy about his front legs and face. He'll make some lucky person a great companion. You did a great job. I could almost feel the relief watching the dirty matted fur fall away. 👍
I hope he gets a good home! He’s adorable! 🥰
Poor baby. What a sweetheart. The fact that he was overfed likely means he was loved but in the wrong way by someone unable to care for him properly. Hope he finds a great home soon. ❤
Considering he handles grooming so well despite his experience, I feel like he would possibly be great in a home with older kids to keep him busy
Thank you so much Vanessa for giving these neglected rescue dogs a second chance at life and adoption! Im sure they feel so much better afterwards!
They can definitely sense Vanessa's calm energy.
I’m think he has been groomed. She said she didn’t think he was a stray.
Gosh, the way he wagged his tail when he got in the shower! He was obviously quite stressed on the grooming table but he was so good. His new owners will be very lucky to get such a sweet boy.
He’s such a well behaved muppet. I hope he gets his new home soon. He’s so cute!! 🥰

Thank you Vanessa for all you do for the animals you support.
Not gonna lie, I loved him as an absolute fluff-unit when he showed up, but he left a handsome gentleman✨
Its heartbreaking to see such a kind and mellow dog being referred to as disgusting. Especially because it's not his fault, he's not greedy or mean, just had bad humans.
He started wiggling his tail as soon as he heard about running around back yard and getting treats. What a sweet boy ❤
He really was a good boy especially considering all he's been through. Amazing transformation. I hope he gets a great home very soon.
He is perfectly named. I’m sure someone will adopt him as he’s such a lovely well behaved boy ❤
Glad to see him running around outside briefly at the end. I'm sure the haircut was draining for him, but he needed it!
As a groomer myself, I find that using those exfoliating gloves that we use in the shower, an awesome way to help with bathing. Especially for really dirty dogs. I love what you do and as I can no longer do this job, I miss it so much.

It was obvious that Mr. Snuffleupagus loved being called a good boy, his tail wagged everytime she said it 🙂
Snuffleupagus needs a propper meal plan indeed. He also ideally needs an opportunity to swim (water therapy) and be outdoors hiking to loose weight and feel comfortable again. The groomer did an exceptionally job as always. Thank you for giving him a splendid start to a new life!
Some lovely water therapy was just what I was hoping for his future too. Get that workout without the joint pain!
