My new mobile DJ booth: Max Design Infinity L Console with mods & DDJ-1000, review + impressions

  • I decided to up my mobile DJ game on several fronts: I wanted a cleaner look for my weddings and events. I wanted a solution that could save me even more time on setup and tear down. After checking out the current market offerings and thinking through the prospect of building my own solution, I decided on purchasing the Infinity L DJ Console from Max Design. maxpbdesign.co...
    At the time of this review, I've had the Infinity about 1 month. I've applied a few modifications to the booth, and had it out for a few events to test drive. Overall I really love my new booth! It's achieved my goals and more. I have a couple small issues that I talk through, but don't think these will be large problems for most people. Danny Max, owner of the company, is great to work with!
    Here in my review, I do a full setup and tear down (time lapse), and talk through all the details of the booth and how I use it.
    In the video, I talk about an iPad holding arm, which is this product name on Amazon (thanks Andrew Rounds / Music Host Entertainment for the tip!):
    AboveTEK Sturdy iPad Holder, Aluminum Long Arm iPad Tablet Mount, 360° Swivel Tablet Stand & Phone Holder with Bracket Cradle Clamps 4"-11" Devices for Kitchen Bedside Office Desk Showcase(White)
    I also used a hole saw / drill bit to add power and XLR connectors to one of the legs; product names on Amazon for the power:
    15A Weatherproof Outdoor Power Outlet by Journeyman-Pro 15 Amp 125 Volt NEMA 5-15R Receptacle Kit with Integrated 20" Extension Cord + Waterproof Rubber Cover (GCR1-WHITE)
    Journeyman-Pro 15 Amp 125V AC Power Inlet Port Plug with Integrated 20" Extension Cord + Waterproof Cover, UL Listed, NEMA 5-15 Flanged Inlet (5278GCP1-WHITE)
    The Furman power strip I used is the PST-6.
    The USB hub I used is: Anker 40W 5-Port USB Wall Charger, PowerPort 5 for iPhone XS / XS Max / XR / X / 8 / 7 / 6 / Plus, iPad Pro / Air 2 / mini, Galaxy S9 / S8 / Edge / Plus, Note 8 / 7, LG, Nexus, HTC and More, Black (AK-A2124111)
    If you have any questions, drop them in the comments!
    NOTE: Max Design warns that we’re not supposed to have free floating items loose in the cubbies while the booth is in it’s case for transport. They even put a warning sticker on the booth- I disregarded it in this video, and need to come up with a hack to secure / tie down the items to keep my booth from getting damaged!

    I took your advice and for a beats pill plus to use as a booth monitor. For me it just doesn't seem to get as loud as I'd like it to. Is there something i could do to make it work out better?

    • @SmilestonesDJAdventures
      @SmilestonesDJAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure … there are two volume controls to manipulate- first the volume on the pill itself, then the booth out volume on your controller (if you’re connecting it like I do). It might not be loud enough for you in your environment or with your gear, but for me, for 90% of my events (weddings) it’s great!

    Great review! I think I'm 80% sure I'm going to get one. However, I'm still plugging my controller into a mixer for better control over sound. I don't trust my controller's mixer. I've got a little 4-ch Yamaha. You think that could fit under?

    • @SmilestonesDJAdventures
      @SmilestonesDJAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool Nathon! Definitely would fit but U will probably have to use 90 degree cable jacks because you won’t have clearance under your controller for normal ones. Plus it might be a little tough to reach up to the knobs on the top of the mixer, but probably not terrible.

    • @SmilestonesDJAdventures
      @SmilestonesDJAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! I didn't time myself but some others like DJ Rachel did on her Infinity review. I can say that I just did a corp event yesterday with my Infinity booth, 2 speakers on tri pods, and a fan (we were outside and it was HOT) - and the total setup time including unpacking the car, parking, etc. was 45 min. Probably 10 min of that was the booth.

    What deck saver do you use that fit on the booth and in the case?

    • @smilestonesdj
      @smilestonesdj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to use a deck saver from Decksavers brand, but I don’t do that anymore. The SKE case gives the DJ 1000 plenty of coverage. Plus once a slightly dropped the case wow my deck savers on, and that actually damaged the unit and I had to get a replacement for Danny Max.

    I do mostly like the look of these custom dj booths that many dj's seem to be making (or having made for them) and using especially US dj's. My only thing is I'm not sure that I'd want to use one for any event that I'm dj'ing at even if one was made especially for me. Personally, I'm happy with a regular bought dj booth/stand with star cloth/covering/custom logo, audio rack and controller case at events but feel free to donate one of these to me for my home setup (wink)!!
    For me a dj should try not to take away the attention from those whose event it is particularly the bride and groom at a wedding. That's not to say don't have a polished, organised and tidy setup but to me it seems dj's are going a bit extreme nowadays and never ever seem to be happy with their setups. I get confused why more and more dj's are creating (or in this instance buying) almost identical looking Dj booths and are constantly tinkering with their setups. I'd rather be spending my time on improving skills, music, playlists and performance aspects. Each to their own but I'm sure this would take longer to setup at events and how does a dj manage on their own with one of these especially if they got to climb flights of stairs! Also not sure why you would want to create this when just a year ago you seemed very happy with your Dj Case/Mod build. Appreciate the detailed video though :) One more thing that you mention in the write up is the transportation of this - surely it's more hassle and worry than it's worth!?

    • @SmilestonesDJAdventures
      @SmilestonesDJAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Craig, appreciate your comments. You have a lot of points. I’ll address what I think is your central question, why did I (and by extension, why do several other DJs) seem to like these style of setups?
      My decision was based on 1) I wanted a more sleek professional looking setup and I was digging what I saw from the market - Max Designs, Bunn Gear, ProX, etc. Also 2) I wanted to improve my setup and tear down time. This booth achieves both for me, so it’s a win!

    • @craigparry282
      @craigparry282 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SmilestonesDJAdventures thanks for the reply and good to see you are happy with the setup and of course that's the main thing! Just quickly I wondered why you choose not use a mixer in your setup and why do you choose a Furman power strip instead of a power conditioner?

    • @SmilestonesDJAdventures
      @SmilestonesDJAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@craigparry282 the ddj-1000 mixer works really well for me and with 4 channels, I haven’t needed an external mixer typically. However sometimes I add one if I am adding extra mics or something like this: once a groom wanted me to attach his 2 18” subs to the system. :)
      I actually am using a power conditioner. In the video and in the video description I mention the model. Its just in a different assembly than the typical rack mount. Works better for my application here!

    • @SmilestonesDJAdventures
      @SmilestonesDJAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did! It was a little stressful but I took my time, measured several times, staged the connectors/wires to ensure there would be enough space. I’d recommend talking with a friend or relative who is handy with woodworking before you jump in if you’re worried - but it’s not too big of a deal! I also figured that if I jacked things up really bad, I could buy a replacement leg from Danny Max.

    Great job…certainly lots of “opportunities” here…I just might have to invest in this…only limitations I can see now are (1) the weight and (2) having to fiddle with the connections before and after my gigs…right now I have my controller case streamlined in a similar way you had yours and it works so well…with that stated, I do think us DJs should always strive to get better and evolve with the times…this seems like a push forward. Thanks for the detail videos…

    • @SmilestonesDJAdventures
      @SmilestonesDJAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yes your #1 is a small issue but I’ve figured out how to handle the large SKB cases a little more easily, especially loading and unloading them into my SUV. If that would help I can make a little video on that.
      I know what you mean on the streamline… with this new setup I’ve still got a few things to setup (like the booth itself) but it’s honestly a bit faster than my previous coffin case on the Fastset table. I feel like it has helped me be a incrementally better, more modern mobile events DJ! And I love getting the compliments on how sleek it looks.
      Whether you go Max, ProX, Bunn, or even build your own, this style of console is a great upgrade to a traditional setup IMO

    Hey Kevin ... Great video and thank you for taking the time to really walk thru this booth! It's been a few months now since you made this video and just had a couple of quick questions for you ... (1) Now that you've gotten thru the rest of wedding season ... How is the booth holding up? (2) I love some of the mods you've made ... Specifically the power and xlr connectors. The question I have is can you drill those connections on the side of the panels rather than the back? (3) I currently have a few custom dj booths - all of which are mobilized with wheels which are transported in a commercial van. Do you think I'd be able to place 4 small wheels on this permanently? I wouldn't want to get the cases and put this booth together at every event I bring it to. Thank you for your time!

    • @SmilestonesDJAdventures
      @SmilestonesDJAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Chris! Thanks for that comment!
      Ok i was thinking maybe I should do an update video to talk about the experience with the infinity so far… but here’s some thoughts. The booth has been holding up very well. In fact it’s still looks brand new. I have to wipe it down with a damp cloth once in a while just because it will collect a little bit of debris or dust, but otherwise it’s great. I had one little mishap but it was my fault, I should talk about it in that follow-up video. About the mods, yes you could definitely drill holes in the side of the legs as opposed to the back. You would just need to watch out for things like obstructions from the bracing. Actually you might even reach out to the manufacturer, Danny Mac’s, who has been really great to answer any kind of mod questions. Yes I definitely think you could mount wheels or casters to the base of this unit with no problem whatsoever.
