Thanks for showing how all of those avocado varieties are handling the cold temperatures! The Lila, Joey and Fantastic are taking the cold like champs!
Wow! Just realized more than half way through the video that they were in pots! Bravo!!! I can't grow them in Michigan, YET!, 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽but I can live vicariously through you for now! Lol
Yes, Avocados react to the change of season, and those Texas varieties (Lila, Joey, Fantastic, Poncho) like to start budding for flowers in December. For the grower, it's not so much a problem of protecting the trees from cold, as it is protecting the flowers. The flowers are the first to freeze, then new leaves, then mature leaves. The flowering phase does last a while, though. On my Lila last spring, I think I was still finding isolated flowers on branch tips up through late March.
I also live in zone 8a, have tried the Fantastic and Mexicola in a greenhouse without heat. Temperature dropped to 11 degrees F here in Texas last year 2023, and they survived. The fantastic did great in winter, the mexicola lost its leave then it came back. My issue with cold hardy avocado trees is that they hate the heat, and I moved them to underneath a plum tree shade. How ever they did not survive the summer. I am experimenting with a small about 3 feet joey and so far it survived summer underneath shade and now in the same greenhouse waiting to see if it survive winter.
I'm in NC and brought mine in for the winter. One of them had been on my back porch and seemed to be just fine with the freezing temps, but I brought it in with the rest of my plants. I've been growing 3 or 4 of them from seeds I brought back from Calif last year.
The fantastic is probably the most hardy for this weather. They can survive temperatures as low as 10 degrees. But only for short periods of time. That Haas looks good though.
I’m in midlands SC and I put my advocado trees in the garage during recent cold, not taking a chance till they get big to handle cold better. They are in 15 gallon pots so that wasn’t easy. I have a fantastic, Lila, poncho, and winter Mexican
I have been looking for the poncho. I walked past tons of them, never knowing that they were super cold hardy. Now that I know, I can’t find one to save my life🤣
@leadfarmer73 Hey Lead! Thanks for sharing. Have you ever seen avocado trees for sell at the big box stores in Columbia, SC? If so, which store? Thanks in advance.
Where do you get your Avocado 🥑 plants? I live in 7A zones. We have extreme cold temperatures in Tn. Last year we got down to single digits for one week.
Hey lead, in your opinion, when is the best time to put the trees in the ground. Someone gifted me 2 actively fruiting avocado trees, but no label or info on what type it is. Mine are doing good in the cold so far 👍

Great news! Im following. Would love to grow some in my greenhouse in upstate ny. Zone 5b-6

Awesome!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you my sister GWH 🌹
I'm amazed to see Avocadoes in zone 8A. This means people can grow them in somewhere like Virginia Beach, Va. Better yet, Washington DC.

I think it's always best to bring them in if you can!
I have two Avocado trees from seed and one tree is still dropping Avocados in December. Orlando Fl. Blessed food in our Permaculture home.
Thank you sir! This is very helpful!
You are so welcome 🙏
❤❤❤ Thanks Lead

We got mixed results on our hardy figs. Glad yours did better.
it’s super cold there right? 😂
@@leadfarmer73 Avocados, not figs. LOL It is getting cold here. Low 20's at night.
Thank you leadfarmer73.
How is that possible? Fantastic
Hi Lead, have planted 2 Avocado trees each year and have lost a total of 6 trees. Im in 8b N. FL. Not sure why they are not lasting thru the winter.
what kind are they?

What size pots r u using? fast draining citrus soil? full sun? any Mexicola Grande variety?
yes I forgot that one. it is also taking the freeze like a champ.
@@leadfarmer73 what size pots Mr Lead?
Definitely cold 🥶

I’d wait for the warmer temps to put them in the ground!
If you have nights below freezing in winter, try to grow them in pots until they have woody trunks, before putting in the ground.
@Avo7bProject Thanks !
Looking good!!!
It's cold but they're growing!
Hey LEAD, this is totally off subject, but is financing land a good idea?
It depends
Are they growing on own Roots or grafted?
Grafted
Would it help to cover the plants at night?
Yes
What is your growing zone?
