45 years ago, my uncle just discarded an avocado pit in my back yard. He just threw it there. Didn’t plant it. Didn’t bury it. Didn’t water it. Just threw it there as discarding it. Today my uncle has been gone for over a decade. However, the avocado tree that grew from that pit is now 35-40 feet tall and gives us thousands of avocados every year for the whole neighbourhood.
12 years ago I suspended the seed of a store bought avocado in water, it grew roots and a stem, I transferred it to the soil out back of my moms condo, it's been mowed at least once, I think that helped because it loss the one stem and grew three, through multiple hurricanes and today I am told it is always bearing fruit. It's great to know that something I did so long ago has survived so much. Now I'm hoping to have my son do the same. -- I believe the fruit grew after 5-7 years.
Mine dies if left outside in the ground in SE TN. The ones I’m growing now is in a green house but not sure yet that it made it in the cold we had. They are a year old so far. They grow for me but never have gotten past 3 years on any of them in the past. After 3 years I gave them away to some kids in CHATTANOOGA TN university students when we moved. Hopefully they still have them, it’s been 2 years since I gave them away. 😊
I had an avocado tree that was nearly 18 years old and it’s been cut down, accidentally, it’s been lightning struck, survived hurricanes in fLoRiDa. It had never bore fruit :(
@@joyceobeys6818 you need to acclimate or climatize your avocados if you're not starting the the greenhouse you need to start them at the solstice of winter December 21st or a little before hand, it's important for the seed to be in the freezing temperatures and sprout during those temperatures it may take quite a bit longer but your plant will be completely resistant to the cold.

The reason why the top is removed for the branches to grow out and not upwards is because of the plant's growth hormone called auxin. Auxin is produced at the terminal bud (the one you cut off) therefore, there is a lot of growth hormone at the top of the plant which makes it grow upwards. BUT when you cut the terminal bud you remove that large amount of auxin. The plant always has some stray auxin running around in its stem. This auxin will multiply in the sides of the stem making it grow more branches instead of growing up. :))

Extraordinary. video👏 I finally found. where my mistake was. Since I had tried this process several times but it always failed. The fact is that when choosing the branch of the other tree, I did not choose the correct one. Then the stem connected to the other root would dry up or die a week later. Very well explained. This video was so cool. I love the passion you have for grafting these avocados trees. Your videos are super encouraging and it makes me feel like i could really grow a tree that produces avocados. Definitely a new life goal I didnt know I had. I love the idea of failing a lot to get what I want. I dont mind the hard lessons that life teaches me, but sometimes I wish I didnt fail as much. But I should really learn to cut myself a little slack. Avocado trees are super hard and intimidating, but they are so worth it.

Pure inspiration. I watch your vids and always see something I missed, today it was to "pluck the bud from the top to encourage outward growth" . I have about 25 seedlings in my "shade house" ranging from 5 months old to babies and see several of the older ones I think need to be plucked. Thanks Tom for all you do. I just checked my avocado seeds under lights, three out of six have started to crack open. I can see something, maybe a leaf or tap root? Now what should I do? After watching your video again, I need to up pot them to bigger pots.
Update! All six seeds have a 1-2" tap root. I discovered this after checking the seeds after my last post. I immediately up potted them into larger 1 gallon containers. When should I up pot them again?
18 years ago I threw three seeds from the Florida variety (LARGE) into the ground. They began fruiting at 13 years and each max season (lots of fruit) they are getting larger. I didn't prune the trees, wish I had, and they are on the way up to the clouds.. Last year we lost a branch and after cleaning up the fruit, it was a huge fruiting year, I had 12 milk crates filled with Avocado. I kept one and brought the rest into work (largest hospital here in FL) and everyone had a field day. Now, the flavor of my fruit is wonderful, it bares little resemblance to a hass and is like enjoying a Brazilian nut without the crunch...I just love them. Currently, one of our trees is growing new branches to fix the top that came off. I don't expect fruit this year, it was very traumatic I expect.
Dinese, I'm sure your coworkers appreciate your avocados. I wouldn't worry about the broken branch, that won't stop it from producing fruit. In fact stress makes trees want to fruit.

I started a couple of seeds with my nephews (five and nine years old at the time) for them to see the connection between the food we eat and how it grows. Three seeds started growing and we did not prune them. One has now grown to the height of seven feet in about two years. Such as the Hass, Lamb Hass, Sir Prize, Nabal, Reed, Green Gold, Kona Sharwill, Gem, Jan Boyce, Carmen Hass, and Kahalu’u. When I was stationed in the Navy in Florida, I really enjoyed the “ Florida” avocados. I wish I could come tour your orchard. Keep up the great work and channel! Love the positive vibes and scenery. @@SleepyLizard i actually did try that, I did the graft and a couple day later my son pulled the graft off and the avocado died. I’ll check my area here, I’d really like to sample from whichever tree I’m grafting from. I’m in south Houston.

I didn't see they were selling trees, are they listed seasonally? I've killed two avocado trees from a crappy company and I have one coming this year from a great company. Lots of great info in comments too

I have a two year old, large Haas Avocado seedling, that evolved from an indoor jar with three toothpicks in tap-water, to soil, and afterwards spending its first winter outdoors; now, it is a bushy little shrub of a tree just under a foot tall. I will try my next seedlings directly in soil as you have recommended. I only save the seeds from tasty fruits, which these days seem few and far in between. Back in the 1980s when Haas Avocados were either 7 or 10 for $1.00 and the Pinkerton Avocados were 1 for $1.29, I should have tried to grow a seedling as I haven't seen a Pinkerton in the produce section for almost 20 years now and by now, I could have grown a full producing tree. Thank you on so many levels for providing information and inspiration.

My compost heap is turning me into a gardener. I find it incredibly rewarding. I'm learning so much about Life and myself growing fruit trees.
I found that if I take my avocado pit scrub gunk off of it so that it’s clean. And pop it on my hang on the back aquarium filter in the aquarium. It sucks up nutrients from the aquarium stays moist all the time and sprouts really quickly.

We definitely need more people like you to encourage everyone planting and living off their land! I’m from Eastern Europe and there everywhere you go you find a fruit tree of any kind or fresh vegetables during the summer time but now everything is based or bought from a store which it makes no sense to me. What if , there will shortage of food, we have to be prepared to live off our land have the minimum necessary to survive. I know it sounds weird but what if something goes south?
I know it’s common language but “going south” probably dates from years ago when northerners thought the south was backward and awful. So, a better expression might be “going wrong” or “going poorly”. 😊😊😊

Hello Tom (Avacado guru)... I have had lot of learning from your videos. I tried placing seeds in black polyethylene bag with moisture in a dark room for 3 weeks. I see the germination/ sprouting process fasten and more successful seeds for planting.
Love how you inform and show people the right procedure of doing things I have grafted trees and have good success and failure however I do not believe that I could grow avocado where I live because of temperature right now I have a pretty good garden growing where I give all my neighbors Tomatoes beans all kinds of squash and now I'm doing plum trees just wanted to say I really enjoyed watching you and I hope you all the success in the world and everything you're doing is a great thing
Great video, with such enthusiasm and joy. Yes, producing your own food is very satisfying, and IMO something that children should be taught. I was going to ask where to get the cuttings for grafting, but I saw the answer from SleepyLizard in another comment. We're living mobile (full-time in an RV, moving from place to place) so we won't be doing any of this any time soon, but when we settle down again, we definitely plan to (again) grow some of our own food. Maybe avocados will be part of that, depending on just where we end up. The bit about connecting Earth and Sun was a great imagery, but the plant is really getting its building blocks for growth, production, etc. largely from the air. That scary "pollutant" CO2 is the material source for the carbon that's basic to all organic material. Sure, that plant also gets some nutrients from the soil, but it gets a lot of material from the very air around it. Now, can someone explain to me why plants didn't evolve to absorb nitrogen from the air, instead of having to get it through the roots? Anyway, this was fun, informative, and entertaining. Thank you.
Thanks Tom for the many infos in Avocado care and farming... I noticed you discuss about Grafting and then Pruning avocado trees. Why not Air Layering (rooting) the branches to be prune? Then planting the Air layered branches once they have rooted? Thank you.
Air layering will work, but it takes a lot longer and takes up a lot of space while you’re waiting for the trees to root. And also the root system does not develop as quickly and robustly as grafting a seedling.

Watching you, i REMEMBERED Now, theres 1 Avocado tree growing 2 blocks from me.... Its always in fruit.. Small fruit... In going to take some cuttings... Its growing right over fence line. My first avocado is now about a year old. Deer got to it in the summer but it is still alive. Thanks for the pruning tips. It will be placed near my fig tree (huge) and add some flavor to the orchard! I have those, apples, pear, apricots, grapefruits, cherry and pomegranates. Need some rangs, too. Will try the grafting technique this year for some known goods. I like Haas but Fuertes are better. Greetings from Northern Cali!
I just discovered you and I am so pleased! I have been attempting to grow avocados from the seeds for years. Finally I managed to get two going about 5 years ago. I live in British Columbia Canada. However, last summer. we had a week of extreme temperatures of 50+ degrees Celsius and my poor tree fried, amongst many other things 😢. I was devastated. So I got started on another. It is now 1 year old and doing ok despite terrible weather and my lack of proper fertilizer. My question for you is can we grow avocado trees in Non-tropical regions. We are considered semi-arid desert here in the summer but we do get winters. I bring my trees in the house in the winter. I would love to eventually plant outside but I don’t want to kill it. Francine, I would have expected to hear the tree died of cold in Canada not heat...must have been so hot. You can grow the trees by bringing them in and out but I don't know how to make them flower or fruit.
@@SleepyLizard I was told years ago that you have to have one male plant for every 7 females. I took that as there are male plants and female plants as he told me the male flowers have a stamen and the females don't. Also said they take 7 years to bloom. This person worked for the County extension on plants. I had Hass avocado plants, not sure if each type has different ways or not.

My mom gave me a potted avocado when I moved out of the house into my own apartment and ever since I lost that plant, more than twenty years ago, I have been trying to get an avocado seed to pop open using the toothpicks over water cup method she used and have met with tragedy after frickin tragedy. I keep trying though. They are nice little houseplants.
You don't have to use the toothpick method. I have a compost pile from leaves & food scraps, a good mulch/ compost will do with some potting soil. Put the seed straight in the dirt. It will grow eventually. I have had dozens start like that.

Just moved into a home in south Florida that has an avocado tree. There was one left on the tree. I put it on the counter for a few days and it got softened. It was yellowish like butter and delicious. First time having a Florida avocado. Right before the rains came from Ian I laid down some organic fertilizer. I’m looking forward to the next crop. Hello from West Africa, please I have a question. I have tried growing avocado trees from seed without grafting until I watched your videos. Is it possible to graft using the scions from the tree I planted(without grafting) and still taste good when they grow to bear fruit ?
Edward, No, that's not something you'd want to do. The whole point in grafting is to take a cutting from a known tree so you replicate that tree's results. Taking a cutting from a seed grown tree that hasn't produced yet is the same as growing directly from seed. The graft will take but you'll still get inconsistent fruit.
Hi SleepyLizard, This video was most informative. I'm growing 2 trees from seed. Their stems are about 1.5 inches in diameter now and 4ft in length. After watching this video I'd rather go the grafting route using 2 varieties on each tree. Is there a specific grafting technique used for this method? Secondly, can avo trees be trimmed, and if so, are there certain do's and don'ts in this regard? We have limited space.
Yes you can graft more than one variety to a tree. You can try either cleft or veneer graft (tons of examples online). As for trimming a tree there is one big "don't" which is never remove more that a 3rd of the tree in any given year. Good luck!

I say "all around North America". It also snows "all around North America". "All around North America" is not the same as "Everywhere in North America". And even though you and I both know you already know the answer, Avocados grow in zones 8a and above.
You mentioned when cutting the scion that the bud should not be open. Does that mean you should only cut scions during a certain time of year when the tree is budding? Or can you do it anytime but it’s better for fast growth to get a cutting with a bud on it?
I am also growing mango tree just started a few weeks ago and the plant already sprouts, so I have made a plastic bottle that self waters the plant with a sponge inside plastic bottle, that soaks water in the sponge and provides water to the soil, now, just waiting on for my plant to grow healthy and strong. Thank you for the inspiration video I really enjoy it because I am proud of myself by using a seed that was about to go to waste, but instead gave life towards the plant 🌱 ❤. Thank you 😊

Bruce, that's incredible. I always tell people an avocado tree is a 30 year project but yours is almost a half century.

@@joyceobeys6818 you need to acclimate or climatize your avocados if you're not starting the the greenhouse you need to start them at the solstice of winter December 21st or a little before hand, it's important for the seed to be in the freezing temperatures and sprout during those temperatures it may take quite a bit longer but your plant will be completely resistant to the cold.

The reason why the top is removed for the branches to grow out and not upwards is because of the plant's growth hormone called auxin. Auxin is produced at the terminal bud (the one you cut off) therefore, there is a lot of growth hormone at the top of the plant which makes it grow upwards. BUT when you cut the terminal bud you remove that large amount of auxin. The plant always has some stray auxin running around in its stem. This auxin will multiply in the sides of the stem making it grow more branches instead of growing up. :))

I finally found. where my mistake was. Since I had tried this process several times but it always failed.
The fact is that when choosing the branch of the other tree, I did not choose the correct one. Then the stem connected to the other root would dry up or die a week later. Very well explained. Thank you Sr.

This video was so cool. I love the passion you have for grafting these avocados trees. Your videos are super encouraging and it makes me feel like i could really grow a tree that produces avocados. Definitely a new life goal I didnt know I had. I love the idea of failing a lot to get what I want. I dont mind the hard lessons that life teaches me, but sometimes I wish I didnt fail as much. But I should really learn to cut myself a little slack. Avocado trees are super hard and intimidating, but they are so worth it.

Pure inspiration. I watch your vids and always see something I missed, today it was to "pluck the bud from the top to encourage outward growth" . I have about 25 seedlings in my "shade house" ranging from 5 months old to babies and see several of the older ones I think need to be plucked.

I just checked my avocado seeds under lights, three out of six have started to crack open. I can see something, maybe a leaf or tap root? Now what should I do? After watching your video again, I need to up pot them to bigger pots.
Update! All six seeds have a 1-2" tap root. I discovered this after checking the seeds after my last post. I immediately up potted them into larger 1 gallon containers. When should I up pot them again?
18 years ago I threw three seeds from the Florida variety (LARGE) into the ground. They began fruiting at 13 years and each max season (lots of fruit) they are getting larger. I didn't prune the trees, wish I had, and they are on the way up to the clouds.. Last year we lost a branch and after cleaning up the fruit, it was a huge fruiting year, I had 12 milk crates filled with Avocado. I kept one and brought the rest into work (largest hospital here in FL) and everyone had a field day. Now, the flavor of my fruit is wonderful, it bares little resemblance to a hass and is like enjoying a Brazilian nut without the crunch...I just love them. Currently, one of our trees is growing new branches to fix the top that came off. I don't expect fruit this year, it was very traumatic I expect.
Dinese, I'm sure your coworkers appreciate your avocados. I wouldn't worry about the broken branch, that won't stop it from producing fruit. In fact stress makes trees want to fruit.

I started a couple of seeds with my nephews (five and nine years old at the time) for them to see the connection between the food we eat and how it grows. Three seeds started growing and we did not prune them. One has now grown to the height of seven feet in about two years. I have a two year old, large Haas Avocado seedling, that evolved from an indoor jar with three toothpicks in tap-water, to soil, and afterwards spending its first winter outdoors; now, it is a bushy little shrub of a tree just under a foot tall. I will try my next seedlings directly in soil as you have recommended. I only save the seeds from tasty fruits, which these days seem few and far in between.
Back in the 1980s when Haas Avocados were either 7 or 10 for $1.00 and the Pinkerton Avocados were 1 for $1.29, I should have tried to grow a seedling as I haven't seen a Pinkerton in the produce section for almost 20 years now and by now, I could have grown a full producing tree.

I found that if I take my avocado pit scrub gunk off of it so that it’s clean. And pop it on my hang on the back aquarium filter in the aquarium. It sucks up nutrients from the aquarium stays moist all the time and sprouts really quickly.

We definitely need more people like you to encourage everyone planting and living off their land! I’m from Eastern Europe and there everywhere you go you find a fruit tree of any kind or fresh vegetables during the summer time but now everything is based or bought from a store which it makes no sense to me. What if , there will shortage of food, we have to be prepared to live off our land have the minimum necessary to survive. I know it sounds weird but what if something goes south?

I know it’s common language but “going south” probably dates from years ago when northerners thought the south was backward and awful. So, a better expression might be “going wrong” or “going poorly”. 😊😊😊

Hello Tom (Avacado guru)... I have had lot of learning from your videos. I tried placing seeds in black polyethylene bag with moisture in a dark room for 3 weeks. I see the germination/ sprouting process fasten and more successful seeds for planting.

Great video, with such enthusiasm and joy. Yes, producing your own food is very satisfying, and IMO something that children should be taught. I was going to ask where to get the cuttings for grafting, but I saw the answer from SleepyLizard in another comment. We're living mobile (full-time in an RV, moving from place to place) so we won't be doing any of this any time soon, but when we settle down again, we definitely plan to (again) grow some of our own food. Maybe avocados will be part of that, depending on just where we end up. The bit about connecting Earth and Sun was a great imagery, but the plant is really getting its building blocks for growth, production, etc. largely from the air. That scary "pollutant" CO2 is the material source for the carbon that's basic to all organic material. Sure, that plant also gets some nutrients from the soil, but it gets a lot of material from the very air around it. Now, can someone explain to me why plants didn't evolve to absorb nitrogen from the air, instead of having to get it through the roots? Anyway, this was fun, informative, and entertaining. Thank you.

Why not Air Layering (rooting) the branches to be prune?
Then planting the Air layered branches once they have rooted?

Air layering will work, but it takes a lot longer and takes up a lot of space while you’re waiting for the trees to root. And also the root system does not develop as quickly and robustly as grafting a seedling.

I just discovered you and I am so pleased! I have been attempting to grow avocados from the seeds for years. Finally I managed to get two going about 5 years ago. I live in British Columbia Canada. However, last summer. we had a week of extreme temperatures of 50+ degrees Celsius and my poor tree fried, amongst many other things 😢. I was devastated. So I got started on another. It is now 1 year old and doing ok despite terrible weather and my lack of proper fertilizer. My question for you is can we grow avocado trees in Non-tropical regions. We are considered semi-arid desert here in the summer but we do get winters. I bring my trees in the house in the winter. I would love to eventually plant outside but I don’t want to kill it. Can they produce in containers? Thank you 🙏🏻☺️🇨🇦
Francine, I would have expected to hear the tree died of cold in Canada not heat...must have been so hot. You can grow the trees by bringing them in and out but I don't know how to make them flower or fruit.

@@SleepyLizard I was told years ago that you have to have one male plant for every 7 females. I took that as there are male plants and female plants as he told me the male flowers have a stamen and the females don't. Also said they take 7 years to bloom. This person worked for the County extension on plants. I had Hass avocado plants, not sure if each type has different ways or not.

My mom gave me a potted avocado when I moved out of the house into my own apartment and ever since I lost that plant, more than twenty years ago, I have been trying to get an avocado seed to pop open using the toothpicks over water cup method she used and have met with tragedy after frickin tragedy. I keep trying though. They are nice little houseplants.
keep trying. next time do a few...at least one will make it.
You don't have to use the toothpick method. I have a compost pile from leaves & food scraps, a good mulch/ compost will do with some potting soil. Put the seed straight in the dirt. It will grow eventually. I have had dozens start like that.
I don’t put them on toothpicks. I just put them in a pot and they just grow.

Just moved into a home in south Florida that has an avocado tree. There was one left on the tree. I put it on the counter for a few days and it got softened. It was yellowish like butter and delicious. First time having a Florida avocado. Right before the rains came from Ian I laid down some organic fertilizer. I’m looking forward to the next crop. This may have been asked, but when you grow from an avocado you bought at the store, and don't have access to a tree with proven fruit, what do you use to graft?
Stephanie, that is a challenge. if you periodically do a google search you'll eventually find a nursery who has some...it depends on time of year.
Find a neighbor who has avocados hanging from their tree and ask for a few small clippings of the size branch you need.
What else do you grow .peach ,cherries, apple, banana tree?.

Hello from West Africa, please I have a question. I have tried growing avocado trees from seed without grafting until I watched your videos. Is it possible to graft using the scions from the tree I planted(without grafting) and still taste good when they grow to bear fruit ?
Edward, No, that's not something you'd want to do. The whole point in grafting is to take a cutting from a known tree so you replicate that tree's results. Taking a cutting from a seed grown tree that hasn't produced yet is the same as growing directly from seed. The graft will take but you'll still get inconsistent fruit.

I'm growing 2 trees from seed. Their stems are about 1.5 inches in diameter now and 4ft in length.
After watching this video I'd rather go the grafting route using 2 varieties on each tree.
Is there a specific grafting technique used for this method?
Secondly, can avo trees be trimmed, and if so, are there certain do's and don'ts in this regard? We have limited space.
Yes you can graft more than one variety to a tree. You can try either cleft or veneer graft (tons of examples online). As for trimming a tree there is one big "don't" which is never remove more that a 3rd of the tree in any given year. Good luck!

It sounds like you're saying avocados could be grown anywhere in the United States and that's very very hard to believe.
What zones can avocados?
I say "all around North America". It also snows "all around North America". "All around North America" is not the same as "Everywhere in North America".
And even though you and I both know you already know the answer, Avocados grow in zones 8a and above.
You mentioned when cutting the scion that the bud should not be open. Does that mean you should only cut scions during a certain time of year when the tree is budding? Or can you do it anytime but it’s better for fast growth to get a cutting with a bud on it?
the latter, you can do it all year as long is it's not flowering.

I am also growing mango tree just started a few weeks ago and the plant already sprouts, so I have made a plastic bottle that self
waters the plant with a sponge inside plastic bottle, that soaks water in the sponge and provides water to the soil, now, just waiting on for my plant to grow healthy and strong. Thank you for the inspiration video
