HEY SCOTTYI HAVE A 2011 NISSAn SKYLINE 250GT WITH A 174000KM ON IT. IT HAS A P0102, P0300 AND P0031 CODE ON IT, BOUGHT NEW MASS AIR FLOW SENSORS AND THE CODE P0102 IS STILL SHOWING WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST I DO?
Hey @Scotty Kilmer Great videos on your channel and you definitely have a subscriber here. Question- I have a 100 mile a day roundtrip commute daily (90% highway miles). What is a reliable, sporty (good acceleration), used car that I can get for under 15K right now? My Buick LeSabre is undependable and I have been looking at used Lexuses, but they seem way overpriced or have been bought from Ontario. (I live in Michigan so cannot do a RWD vehicle.) Please help as I am looking to buy something AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Scotty, I too am an ASE master auto tech (retired and disabled). I too eat and breath cars. I also taught in the high schools and post secondary schools. I admire what you do to inform the public honestly. Keep being you.
It's amazing isn't it? If not for scotty I would have got another hunk of junk to appease the wife, even though I always knew Japanese cars are better.
I bought an 05 Mazda 3 hatchback with 177 k miles for $700 last year, it needed a new clutch kit, master cylinder and slave cylinder and a couple sensors. I'm in about $1500 with the cost of the car, parts and labor. Took a gamble on the car and so far so good!
I bought a 2010 Mazda 3 with a manual transmission with like 140k miles on it. I’m just over 210k miles with, minor issues along the way but great car overall.
You know how many extremely mechanically sound cars I bought in my life for dirt cheap because they were “ugly”? 😂 I was the king of the 3 Tone paint job; the gray car with one green door and one primer black Q panel lol. I also was 42 years old before I ever made one car payment in my life 🤣
Scotty dispensing some good ol' college of common sense knowledge! I think I'll hold on to my 20 yr. old Crown Vic Panther with 160k... still drives like new!
Hi Scotty, as a former Mazda technician, my experience with the Mazda Protege was one of very few transmission warranty or CP claims. The effected cars with the associated transmission issues were the 626, mx-6, and 929. Basically the effected cars were the car built at the Flat Rock, Michigan plant. The car built in the Hiroshima, plant were pretty much bullet proof, save the Rx-7. That includes the millenias, mx-3, and Proteges.
Yes you right! People have hard time understanding that made in Japan is always better because they're uneducated and never been anywhere. I had a 1992 Mazda 323 hatch that was made in Japan had close to 300.000 miles and never touched the transmission while my sister had a 94 626 with a ford automatic and it was nothing but junk.
That Mazda is amazing, runs like new! Definitely a keeper, every day she runs that thing she is in effect saving money, just change the oil, keep up with basic maintenance and I bet it will go another 50,000 miles! When it goes kapput then buy a Toyota!
People keep forgetting that where you live has a huge factor in what will need replacing sooner than later and hwy vs city driving. I live where in the winter it gets just downright wicked cold and summer can be hot as hell. Temp will wear out a car as well. Cold starts are hard as hell and heat is a scavanger as well
Just bought a 2004 Lexus ES 330. A family asked me what to do with it. It has 160,000 miles and it needs brakes, rotors, spark plugs and change the timing belt that has never been done. They wanted to take it to a junk yard! Bumpers need repainted, but otherwise a wonderful car. I offered them $2,000. They took it in a heartbeat. My 18yr old and I just did all the needed repairs. Drives and shifts like a dream.
Scotty has made me buy used cars that are dependable. I have spent so much money buying new cars and even BMW and Mercedes. I would never own either again endless money pits barely 80k on both and started falling apart and I made decent money to own them but not waste it on fixing plastic crap. 😂😂😂my 2006 Toyota Solara with almost 200k works like a clock.
I bought my aunts 2001 5speed protege for $1. It has 226k miles and runs like a champ! A little sluggish up hills, but I'm impressed with the gas mileage and the zippyness :)
I'm about the same age as you. $500 when we were 17 is just about the same as $6000 today! That Lexus looks like a pretty good deal compared to your old Maverick!
Owned the 2001 version of sane car. LOVED IT!!! Wasn’t told of an issue it had. Every morning upon startup blew white smoke. Would not do it again all day. Had to sit for like 8 hours to do it. Still loved it. Ran excellent. No noises. Ran smooth. Sold it when I moved out of the state. Bought it because had older Protégés before that and all reliable. Always bought older ones to save money then sold to buy a newer or better version of an, again, old Protege. Owned every year Protege at one point. Only the 94 had a terrible tremble when in gear and stopped at a light or anywhere. An annoying issue with small 4 cylinder car of all makes in the 90’s. Even Corollas we’re doing it as the mikes got higher. My 98 Protege I got for $400 in excellent shape when owner was told by dealership engine blew. I replaced the cracked intake hose and all was well. He bought a new car there. Some of these stealerships are criminals.
Mazda only began making cars with Toyota this year. Their tremendous increase in quality began in 2014 when they split from Ford and has nothing to do with Toyota.
They split in 2009, They we’re just transitioning to independence between 09 and 13, switched to their skyactive engine in 2012 from the L series engine they designed which Ford still uses
Just what I needed. I’m 16 and have no experience on vehicle’s and I’m planning on buying a 2010 Ford F-150 for my first vehicle, 4.6 L XLT is what I’m hoping on getting
@@nickdial8528 It's possible. I truly believe that Japanese auto manufacturers qaulity control has gone in the dumps from what it was in the early to mid 90's. Make no mistake about it though Toyota, Lexus, Honda and Acura still had their fare share of problems through the years as well.
My 2010 Ford Focus rides better than the 2004 Chevy Aveo I bought new. Got rid of the Aveo after eleven years and bought a five year old Focus. Never going to buy Chevy subcompact cars again.
My last rental car was worse. Nissan Versa. Base model, I’m lucky it even had power windows. I referred to it as the Matchbox Car for all three days that I drove it
I have an '07 Focus wagon. It was an auto, swapped it for a 5-speed. 152,000 miles and it runs like it was built yesterday. Also have aftermarket intake, exhaust, header, cams and throttle body plus eibach springs, upgraded sway bars, SVT rims , wings west body kit, fiberglass hood and 0% window tint. It's quick it handles better than anything I've ever driven and it looks really good too.
My daily driver is a 1999 Mazda 626 with the same 2.0 L. I also purchased it from a rental company for about the same price. I've used it for more than twenty years and at the current 270,000 miles, I can say the engine still runs great with very little oil consumption. I believe the engine was designed with oil squirters for the cylinders and might have something to do with the longevity. Also, as Scotty mentioned, the transmission is the weak point. Back in 1999, Mazda was using the Ford CD4E transmissions for this model. My transmission died at about 170,000 and was replaced with a rebuilt transmission at an AAMCO shop. The Ford CD4E may have been improved over time since I know someone with a 2003 V6 Ford Escape, same CD4E transmission, and it has over 285,000 and is still running strong.
We've had a white one for 10 years we bought it at 77000 miles and drove it to 250000 miles and religiously maintained it. It felt like it could do another 50000 but it was time to give it away who needed it more. We had so many experiences with it that most people would wish to experience in a car, the best car we have owned
I miss my mazda. I had a 2010 mazda 6 and had over 266k miles and it ran like a top. My wife got rear ended and they totalled it due to the mileage. I am still upset over this lol.
For the Chevy Aveo owner on the P0300: the ignition coils can go bad. My wife had one and it went through 3 Coil packs. The OEM went out at about 80k mi. The 2 replacements went out within 1k mi. It also needed the rear wheel bearing replaced. Basically, 80k mi was the junker sentence for that particular car. I've seen other owners get many more miles than that on the Aveo. It just wasn't going to happen on this one. The Aveo was actually a re-badged Daewoo. Just look under the hood for the Daewoo sticker on the underside. That made me silly with laughter.
My wife bought a 99 Protege when it was a year old and we sold it in 2018. Same color as the one in the video but it was the base model. 1.6L, 5-sp manual and very fun to drive. The only options were A/C and the 6-speaker cd stereo. It was a very dependable car; the 1.6L even did not have an EGR valve. I did get a set of 15-inch factory aluminum wheels to be able to get high-performance all weather tires since it did not have anti-lock brakes and there are no good 14-inch tires available any more. It averaged about 30MPG in mixed driving. I still kind of miss it.
My first car at 17 was a 97 Honda civic with a dented and chipped hood with a rusted exhaust that i "fixed" by putting a smaller pipe inside it and clamping it down. Had 228k miles when I sold it and it still ran pretty damn good
Bought a Silver Protege brand new in 2001. Ran like a dream until it got totaled by our daughter, she survived the accident though which is a good thing!!
Scotty is the only American that straight up looks like an Aussie and looks like he's supposed to sound like an Aussie LOL but is not an Aussie but has all of the delicacy in his personality as an Aussie would WTF love this guy hahaha thank you scotty!😅😅😅❤❤❤
The secret to having you car last is driving a manual transmission car... a good one with a solid reputation of making good solid and simple manual transmissions. I'm almost 40 and can't even imagine the amount of money I have saved over the years driving standard... plus it's WAY more fun and helps you pay more attention to what's happening in front of you!
I ask scotty a question about my car yesterday and today here is my car.I was convinced that the ford auto box is miles better than those jatco pieces of crap and its confirmed in this video. Mine is a 2002 with only 35000 miles on it and was owned by an elderly lady who only put 2000 miles a year on it. Auto box shifts like a dream. Cheers scotty from england.
Scotty as a long time Mazda mechanic for many years Mazda claimed their brakes squeak when backing up because they're not designed to go backwards they're designed to go forwards.
I bought a Honda Civic 7th gen 2 door hatch several months ago the car have 200k miles and still runs like a dream all I had to do was change the timing belt which was dirt cheap and I was good to go it ain’t the fastest thing in the world but it’s not a heavy car also so it’s fun to drive I would recommend this vehicle to anyone who don’t want to spend a fortune on repairs when it breaks down
My brother bought a 2001 Nissan from a rental company, for my mom many years ago. It had 40k miles on it. 2021, it has over 200k miles and still runs good.
I always buy used vehicles & drive them into the ground. I’ve spent a total of $9500 on used vehicles over my 18 years of driving. I’ve always bought Fords & drove them well over 300,000 miles with little to no major problems. I just bought an mint condition 2007 Lincoln MKX with 130,000 miles on it from an older couple (original owners) for $4900. I know I have a lot of life in it because I had my mechanic look over it & she couldn’t find any problems other then needing the brakes replaced.
had this exact car for over ten years (zero trans issues). in 2019 I had an injector got stuck open so i had to change that out. I also had a misfire I couldnt get rid of (changed spark plugs and coils) I ended up giving her to my father who still drives it. Had zero issues leading up. Ended up with a 2016 mazda3. I feel like mazda has always been under rated as hell.
I had one of these with the 1.8 L so virtually the same motor. I got over 40 mpg on the highway. Wooden steering and average suspension aside, it was fast, handled well, was utterly reliable and had a cracking factory CD. Should have kept it.
My first car was a 93 Protege LX 1.8l engine. The transmission between 1-2 always shifted very rough. Then the transmission died, and we bought and installed a rebuilt transmission in it. Same model, but it was a completely different transmission.... it still jerked between 1-2 gear.
Here in Australia my dad used to own a circa 2002/3 Mazda 323 ASTINA which is very similar in body style and engine to the protege. We have the protege here as well. Great car, but MAKE SURE you change the timing belt and water pump. My dad didn't and the engine blew up in the middle of NSW lol. He still missed that car. When we towed it to our local mechanic he said he'd had a bunch of astinas in there with the same problem. Many people don't service the timing belt and it ruins the motor. The mechanic liked Mazda's a lot and bought the shell of ours for 300 bucks and he put a new engine in it.
If he blew it must have been something else, these engines are not interference meaning it doesn't bend valves, mine snapped and slapped a new one and back in the road, and water pump doesn't run with the timing belt ,but is behind it, might as well replace it, as far as I'm concerned most mazda engine with timing belt aren't interference, change the mechanic
And ever since Ford partnered with Mexico, whatever brand that is, their cars have gone downhill. I as a mechanic cannot reccomended a Ford to someone, unless it's older.
On the 4th generation of the GS350, just a headlight is $1,800 - $2,200!! I believe there's aftermarket support but still not cheap at all. I love mine though.
Even with the good cars, the Toyotas and the Hondas and their spinoffs, what I’ve noticed is that right around 180K-200K, stuff starts going bad and needing replaced.
As a chronic, I have always preferred a car that does not attract attention... Mazda Protoge' is top not for non-attention, especially if it looks like it's falling apart- right ride for Kentucky blue grass
Mazda 323 and Proteges were made in Japan and NEVER had transmission problems. It was the models like 626 and 929 that were associated with ford and made here in the US that had a TON of transmission problems.
My Mazda Protege from 93 back in the day didn't last long without its transmission going caput. I would take it over and over again to get "refurbished"; but it would only last a year or two until I had to go back again. The transmission was definitively the Achilles heel of the car.
Bought a 2003 Pontiac Vibe in 2003 from Enterprise Car sales (former rental from NM/AZ). Had 23k miles on it. I drove it to 300,000 miles, and bought a 2007 Pontiac Vibe with 135k on it. The first one then went to someone who had the time to spend to rebuild the front end. (which would have cost me more than just replacing, as I didn't have the time.) He put another 20-30k on it before the tensioner bolt broke, and it sat until he passed it to someone else who was going to get the bolt out. The 07 still drives fine, but it now leaks oil from the timing chain cover. I have to replace it, because pulling the engine will cost more than the car is worth (it was attacked by a rabid 18 wheeler at an intersection).
Hey Scotty, what about the tires? With a long commute the tires should be in really good shape. I wouldn't let my wife or mom drive that kind of commute with bad tires.
Bought an 02 Impala from a rental agency Good thing I bought the extra bumper to bumper warranty Engine blew on Interstate, leaving me stuck for hours until AAA showed up. Steering linkage failed. Transmission clunked and failed. All of this was happening on a car with less than 20K. It was the bad 3.4 liter 6cyl. Traded it off for a Ford Custom Conversion Van. It ran flawlessly. Never buy previously rental vehicle.
TIP: If you get an old / higher mileage car... DRIVE IT LIKE THE PREVIOUS OWNER DID! If it was taken care of { not floored to get up to speed & the brakes weren't slammed on all of the time etc. } But you start driving it that way, it will likely start having problems within a few months. Oil leaks from you now abusing it, compared to when the engine and transmission was babied for example. Brake oil leaks or blown brake lines from you braking late { and therefore hard, instead of looking ahead and getting off of the gas earlier and lightly applying the brakes. } Also: change the engine oil no later than 5,000 miles, no matter what the manual says. Keep that engine oil as fresh as you can and don't let the old & burnt oil stay in there. This will extend the life of your engine for about 1 extra oil change per year for most people. If it's an automatic transmission, DON'T manually shift gears when you're moving. This is NOT good on these older transmission, they weren't designed for that. { New autos can have that ability but NOT all transmissions, even new ones } Treat old cars as flying carpets made of cardboard and you'll get the full life span out of them.
Scotty!!! What should I do for a manual base Toyota Matrix 170k km (105k miles) NO maintenance history!!! Carfax shows 7 pervious owners nothing else! Guy I bought it from only had for 5000km. Ontario so it was certified for every owner. I got an oil change, new front bearings/brakes, checked all the fluids and swapped/cleaned all the filters. Serp belt is new, previous owner did it. 15 year old car and looking forward to the next 15 years!
I had 2001 Mazda protege with 227000 and still running stong easy. SOLD it and got a protege 5 love my protege 5 very much too but SOLD that too and got a 2015 Mazda 3 GT love love love this car everything about is super awesome 👍👍😎
The Mazda/Ford 4F27E is a very reliable trans. Torque rating twice as high as what engine puts out. I had it in 2 Focus with way over 100k miles. Ford says in manual to change trans. fluid and filter every 30k.

My 06 solara has 243k on it
I payed $500 for my first car too ! No front fender! Ran great ! Ford Granada with a 300 straight Six !
I bought my aunts 2001 5speed protege for $1. It has 226k miles and runs like a champ! A little sluggish up hills, but I'm impressed with the gas mileage and the zippyness :)
$1.00, now that's a bargain.... Lol🎉
You still drive it?
You ripped her off, it should have costed $2. 😂
The Proteges were tuff as anvils. A great product from Mazda and a worthy successor to the GLC & 323.
Yeah 😎 my mom did have one of those long time ago, and 🇵🇷 she had a accident and Lost it
I'm about the same age as you. $500 when we were 17 is just about the same as $6000 today! That Lexus looks like a pretty good deal compared to your old Maverick!
I was gonna say, I don't know how old Scotty is, but $500 in 1975 was a little over $2,500 today according to inflation calculators online.
"The way it looks nobody is gonna steal it..." I think Scotty just described my sexual life in just a few words.
Scotty you have told us many times how you, as sympathetic mechanic, treats hire cars. Imagine how others treat them! She was a lucky lady.
This was highly entertaining. I’m shopping for a used pickup.
Thank you YT suggestion algorithm.
God don't stop what you doing you're the best teacher ever had I was openly honest God bless you
Mazda only began making cars with Toyota this year. Their tremendous increase in quality began in 2014 when they split from Ford and has nothing to do with Toyota.
They split in 2009, They we’re just transitioning to independence between 09 and 13, switched to their skyactive engine in 2012 from the L series engine they designed which Ford still uses
Yep get away from European and US brands... quality comes back. 😁
Just what I needed. I’m 16 and have no experience on vehicle’s and I’m planning on buying a 2010 Ford F-150 for my first vehicle, 4.6 L XLT is what I’m hoping on getting

My Chevy has been much more reliable and cheaper to fix then my Toyota.

I have 2 Focus a 2001 w/58k miles and a 2002 w/200k miles. Super reliable. Auto and Manual.
My last rental car was worse. Nissan Versa. Base model, I’m lucky it even had power windows. I referred to it as the Matchbox Car for all three days that I drove it
@@BigEightiesNewWave I used to have an 2008 Ford Focus manual. I miss it so much. I hate people who text and drive and ruin other peoples day.
Ford is always superior to Chevy. And I think the focus shares Mazda technology in some of the years...
Knows a good car when he drives one. The real test.
😢Sorry about that. I have 2009 and love it to death, it’s a stick shift😁.
I wish I were computer savvy enough to put Scottys hand gestures to a classical song. He is, in my opinion, the Maestro Mechanic!
A coworker I barely new showed up in an Aveo one morning. I said, "Oh my God. Are you okay?" She said, yes, it's just a rental.
My first car at 17 was a 97 Honda civic with a dented and chipped hood with a rusted exhaust that i "fixed" by putting a smaller pipe inside it and clamping it down. Had 228k miles when I sold it and it still ran pretty damn good
I have a 08 ACCORD v6..with 220k miles on it.. And it still runs like a top
I owned a 86' Mazda 323 one of the best cars I've ever owned.. 1.8 liter Fi.. Handled like a dream..
2:52 When scotty drives, the roads make way for him.
The secret is just to baby ur car. Dont drive hard. Keep up with maintenence. Thats it
I ask scotty a question about my car yesterday and today here is my car.I was convinced that the ford auto box is miles better than those jatco pieces of crap and its confirmed in this video.
I'd never buy Ford's just a rolling pos
@@DylanL69 of each there own. I think GM is garbage & I’ve never had one that lasted past 80,000 miles without the engine & transmission went out.
Last September I bought an 01 Protege with 118k miles for $500. Cleaned it, did a little maintenance, and sold it last week for $2900.
How much damage can you do in the first 25k miles?
Me: Hold my beer
had this exact car for over ten years (zero trans issues). in 2019 I had an injector got stuck open so i had to change that out. I also had a misfire I couldnt get rid of (changed spark plugs and coils) I ended up giving her to my father who still drives it. Had zero issues leading up. Ended up with a 2016 mazda3.
I feel like mazda has always been under rated as hell.
That hand thing scotty does when explaining. I like that. 😆😆😆 Means he's tellin the truth.
I have the hatchback version of this and it drives like a dream. Highly recommend as an economy car.
I had one of these with the 1.8 L so virtually the same motor. I got over 40 mpg on the highway. Wooden steering and average suspension aside, it was fast, handled well, was utterly reliable and had a cracking factory CD. Should have kept it.
I am with Scotty, a car is to get you from point A to point B. As long as it runs is all that matter.
“No one is gonna steal it!”….. Most important these days!
Since leaving their partnership with Ford, Mazda has gotten better especially now they've partnered with Toyota
I just got rear ended im gonna be car shopping soon good info
Mazda 323 and Proteges were made in Japan and NEVER had transmission problems. It was the models like 626 and 929 that were associated with ford and made here in the US that had a TON of transmission problems.
Valuable advice. I’m keeping my old car for now.
Had a 2001. Drove it up and down california. Manual though. Great car.
My Mazda Protege from 93 back in the day didn't last long without its transmission going caput. I would take it over and over again to get "refurbished"; but it would only last a year or two until I had to go back again. The transmission was definitively the Achilles heel of the car.
My 1981 Honda Civic still gets easily over 40mpg, daily driver over 50 miles mon-fri, hard to tell me I need a new car.
From point A to point B I'm sold.
I had the same thing, black with a 5 speed. Loved it!
Tight, Saved...put upkeep in. Great TOP's. Cheaper ta keeper
Hey Scotty, what about the tires? With a long commute the tires should be in really good shape. I wouldn't let my wife or mom drive that kind of commute with bad tires.
Bought an 02 Impala from a rental agency
Good thing I bought the extra bumper to bumper warranty
Engine blew on Interstate, leaving me stuck for hours until AAA showed up. Steering linkage failed. Transmission clunked and failed. All of this was happening on a car with less than 20K. It was the bad 3.4 liter 6cyl. Traded it off for a Ford Custom Conversion Van. It ran flawlessly. Never buy previously rental vehicle.
TIP: If you get an old / higher mileage car... DRIVE IT LIKE THE PREVIOUS OWNER DID! If it was taken care of { not floored to get up to speed & the brakes weren't slammed on all of the time etc. } But you start driving it that way, it will likely start having problems within a few months. Oil leaks from you now abusing it, compared to when the engine and transmission was babied for example. Brake oil leaks or blown brake lines from you braking late { and therefore hard, instead of looking ahead and getting off of the gas earlier and lightly applying the brakes. }
Also: change the engine oil no later than 5,000 miles, no matter what the manual says.
Thank you for your help. I will get either a Toyota or a Lexus. I was a two door though. A coupé is the word I think.

The Mazda/Ford 4F27E is a very reliable trans. Torque rating twice as high as what engine puts out. I had it in 2 Focus with way over 100k miles. Ford says in manual to change trans. fluid and filter every 30k.
in nz we have alot of second hand mazda 3 with the 1.5 engine. good little cars and they hold their resale value very well

What is a reasonable lead time to get a car to said mechanic for a look over?
