@@jpain97_ i do not work on it everyday. I work on it every 3-4 months for oil (takes an hour or so) and then if something breaks i fix it myself unless it's ridiculously hard. (a month ago my crankshaft position sensor went out and I couldn't take apart my engine)

So don't give him too much credit lol! Engineering is highly competitive. The first thing employer wants to know if whether the newly-graduate applicant graduated from an ACCREDITED engineering program within a not-for-profit public RESEARCH university.

But none of us, including my cousins, most of us millennials, graduated college with debt. Why? Just common sense to us. We shop out choice of school based on reputation and price, meaning we choose only public research universities with the best rates and ACCREDITED programs--ABET for engineering, AACSB for business (ACBSP accreditation is NOT good enough for us), etc.. Second, we negotiate our aid packages for the lowest final price. We threaten not to enroll and go elsewhere if the school doesn't meet our tuition assistance "demands" (we make it very clear that the school needs the tuition from our enrollment more than we need them). Third, we all chose majors that makes us more employable when we graduate (engineering, accounting, business administration, computer science, etc.) and leave our area of interest to either a secondary major or a minor. None of us graduated with student loan debt, and we're able to purchase our first homes within 2 years after graduating.

I downgraded from a $30,000 car to a $2000 Toyota Corolla. I've had that Corolla for 1 year now and it still drives like a dream. I've only done basic maintenance to it. Really recommend it. Best thing is that I don't owe anything to anyone.

3 years ago I bought an old Corolla with not many miles on it. I service it regularly, and it has never let me down. 2 months ago someone side swiped me in heavy traffic, and I had to get an estimate on the damage for insurance. Even though the damage was just cosmetic, it turned out to be worth more than the car itself, which was considered a write off. I was offered a cash settlement for the car or the ability to keep the car with a lesser settlement minus a salvage fee. I thought about all the things I've learned from Dave, and could hear him saying "be weird or be broke" in my head over and over. Instead of going out and buying another car, I hunted down a repair shop that would do the job for the amount I was being offered to keep the car. It was the weirdest thing I've done, but I'm sure I'll look back on this decision and be very proud of it someday.
Doing deliveries is what's messing his car up. To make that much money you have to put lot of miles. Average pay is $1/mile so he puts 2k a month. Whatever car he gets it's going to be run to the ground with this road warrior mentality and this job is not sustainable for long because the payments start catching up to what you make. Yea the money might be good but you'll literally pay half of it just fixing your car
I bought a 2002 toyota corolla for $600 instead of getting a lease which was my initial decision. I'm glad I didn't go with a lease. Saving tons of money every month. In addition corolla is 41 mpg.... cant beat that. Best commuter ever.
Car trading is one of the most difficult things there is, for a private buyer or seller. For professionals it is different. They are your friend as soon as you pass the treshold.
What Dave was saying at the end is how I got my car! A daughter of a passed away grandma was selling a $3,500 car for $1,500. It was a 2005 ford focus with about 25k miles. Just fine condition. I bought it cash, currently have it up to 43k miles, andhave had absolutely zero problems with it. I had one light replaced for $12 and that's it lol.

My first car, a 1999 corolla with about 50k miles has never in my family's ownership had to go to be fixed at all. That's about 6 years, only having done the basic oil change etc. It goes for around 1200$ and is the most worth the money vehicle I think I will ever be driving. No rust and drives great, surprisingly much space. I'm certainly recommending it for anyone looking for a cheap car.

Samuelfish I drive a 1997 Toyota Camry and I drive it 30 miles a day and I regularly drive 400 miles there and back to visit my family. And I do all maintenance myself or with the help of my brother or father-in-law. It is an extremely reliable vehicle and I could only assume a Toyota Corolla would be the same story.

When my brother and his wife were just starting out in the military in 2005 they bought a 1996 Toyota Camry with around 150 thousand miles for 3500 dollars and drove that thing all over the United States for about three years And turned around and sold it for 3 thousand. The car only required tires and a one day inexpensive shop stay during that time. They got lucky lol. Most used cars would not work that well for that little bit of money
At least I educated myself about money in my early 20s . how the money system works, debt based economy, people in big debt with mortgage, school, credit cards, cars, etc. Been debt free for years and always will be.

admittedly I didn't listen to the entire broadcast I'm just going through the comments thank you for highlighting that if he's using his car for delivery then he needs to go with a hybrid that's all there is to it he's putting in the miles they are selling Toyota Prius all day long too and $3,000 you might have to do a little work with the battery if you got 6,000 you can probably get a generation 3 car easy and we're talkin flawless we're talkin automobiles with hardly anything wrong with them maybe a small door ding or something like that we're talking cars that have good air conditioning and heater decent stereos and it just don't break down you talk to the number two most reliable automobile the only reason it's number 2 is because the number one most reliable automobile that happens to have the same engine is not a hybrid. Hybrids do have a slighter reliability risk but oddly enough with a hybrid the more you drive it the better it helps out that system so if you're delivering pizza or something like that and you really want to have a hybrid.

I've had several old cheap cars that I had to commute in that didn't give me too much grief. I saved tons on insurance, and interest and payments. I'm very successful now---it really does work.

And yes, despite common asking prices from dealerships there are good, affordable, used cars out there... if you're not out to impress people at stoplights. My first car I bought for myself- in 2004 was a '78 Bonneville with a bad transmission for $600. Replaced the transmission myself for $150 and it was clean! Loved that thing. Sold it for three times what I paid a couple years later.
Shouldn't be too hard to find a dependable used car for 3k. Used cars these days, especially imports made after 1999, are way more dependable than used cars were say in the 1990s. Toyotas and Hondas are a good choice. I'd say a Corolla, Camry, Civic or an Accord would be a good choice.
In my city i've found accords and camrys for a good deal around 3k, and older Nissan cars are great, and some GM and Ford's mostly their full size sedans, suvs and trucks are good
Bought a $2000 Toyota and couldn't be happier with it. Starts every morning like a charm. I literally just had to put gas in it and change the oil veery once in a while. Love it.
I have a 2007 Mitsubishi Galant and let me tell you I have had that car for 6 years . It has 263,000 miles and its still going. I check everything monthly , almost every 3 months I chang the oil . This car has been my life saver and I haven't wasted a lot of money .
The caller points out the issues (which Dave often ignores) about buying too cheap of a used car clunker) in one year you dropped $1400 plus $2000 in repairs...so you are paying about $300 a month for a POS and the headache of it breaking down on you constantly. If you can afford it, buy something a few years old with under 30k miles on it. Should still have a few years of factory warranty on it, and will be, depending on the vehicle, about 30-40% less than what the original MSRP is. Not cheap, but at least you will have piece of mind and not having the headache of constantly taking it to the shop, and then constantly explaining to your boss why you will be late for work.

yes you should. Worst car decision I ever made was to finance a $10k sedan. Best decision I ever made was to sell it 5 years later for $3500 and turn around to buy a pickup truck for the exact same price. Love that truck, and owning it outright is a great feeling.
So true. I bought an 05 Grand Marquis with 45K miles for $4000 from an older woman. It now has 61K miles on it and I haven't had to do a single repair on it yet, just oil changes. It averages 26 mpg which is pretty good for a full size car with a V8. The woman even threw in a set of 4 snow tires that only had one season on them. I love not having car payments!
One important variable about this story is the timing of this young mans ambition and his access to this type of info. Like he said he grew up listening to Dave. I'm 39 and have been listening to Dave for the past couple years and have learned so much. Wishing I had You tube and immediate access to this very important message at 18 rather then a Walkman with cassette tape. The way we can access this information today is huge. It's so weird I bought a Mitsubishi Galant V6 for $1,800 it had tree damage as in a tree dented the roof and couldn't open the sun roof. Man I drove that thing for 3 years all over from Midwest to NYC to the Carolinas and back. I was truly sad when I had to finally decide to let it go. I put 200k of my own miles on it. Had only minor normal issues. It was my favorite car just due to the price.
I’m at the Honda shop now with my 11 year old Odyssey with 150,000 miles and plan to drive it another 50,000. She gets the job done. Buy a good car, with a good service record and single owner if possible. You can still find good deals out there.

Galants are trash anyway. Toyota or Honda my guy. For 5k you can find something good. Thats what i been doing since ever. Buy and resale every few years to upgrade. Keep the maintenance receipts and you'll get top dollar every time you sale to move up. And like wise whenever your on to your next purchase, ask for maintenance records and such. Good luck.

I've purchased vehicles from auctions for great deals. Just bought a 2017 Hyundai Elantra SEL with 30k miles for $5,087 out the door with fees just needed a front bumper cover, driver airbag and front seatbelts that locked up during a very small minor front end collision. Cost me in airbag, seatbelts and airbag module $600 in parts and was able to ziptie my front bumper for now, no fender damage, hood damage nor frame damage litterally just front bumper/grille. Vehicle came with window sticker msrp in glovebox with a couple dealer add ons was $23k just 2 years ago and im under $6k into it and have a very nice reliable car for many many years so don't overlook unconventional places like auctions

Dave is so right. I never liked Ford's and never intended to buy one, but my wife had a Ford Taurus when we got married. It was easy to work on and there were hundreds of them in the junkyard. Parts from the junkyard are stupid cheap. Even though it broke a lot we saved so much money keeping that car, and I learned that I enjoy working on cars. You can make a lot of fun money working on friend's cars on the weekend.

I thought about all the things I've learned from Dave, and could hear him saying "be weird or be broke" in my head over and over. Instead of going out and buying another car, I hunted down a repair shop that would do the job for the amount I was being offered to keep the car. It was the weirdest thing I've done, but I'm sure I'll look back on this decision and be very proud of it someday.

Doing deliveries is what's messing his car up. To make that much money you have to put lot of miles. Average pay is $1/mile so he puts 2k a month. Whatever car he gets it's going to be run to the ground with this road warrior mentality and this job is not sustainable for long because the payments start catching up to what you make. Yea the money might be good but you'll literally pay half of it just fixing your car

I bought a 2002 toyota corolla for $600 instead of getting a lease which was my initial decision. I'm glad I didn't go with a lease. Saving tons of money every month. In addition corolla is 41 mpg.... cant beat that. Best commuter ever.

Car trading is one of the most difficult things there is, for a private buyer or seller. For professionals it is different. They are your friend as soon as you pass the treshold.
What Dave was saying at the end is how I got my car! A daughter of a passed away grandma was selling a $3,500 car for $1,500. It was a 2005 ford focus with about 25k miles. Just fine condition. I bought it cash, currently have it up to 43k miles, andhave had absolutely zero problems with it. I had one light replaced for $12 and that's it lol.

My first car, a 1999 corolla with about 50k miles has never in my family's ownership had to go to be fixed at all. That's about 6 years, only having done the basic oil change etc. It goes for around 1200$ and is the most worth the money vehicle I think I will ever be driving. No rust and drives great, surprisingly much space.
I'm certainly recommending it for anyone looking for a cheap car.

Samuelfish I drive a 1997 Toyota Camry and I drive it 30 miles a day and I regularly drive 400 miles there and back to visit my family. And I do all maintenance myself or with the help of my brother or father-in-law. It is an extremely reliable vehicle and I could only assume a Toyota Corolla would be the same story.
He is a sharp guy for listening to Dave and taking action. More and more people need to do these types of things and succeed. Much respect to anyone who is on this journey of discipline, hard work, honesty, integrity, and perseverance.
When my brother and his wife were just starting out in the military in 2005 they bought a 1996 Toyota Camry with around 150 thousand miles for 3500 dollars and drove that thing all over the United States for about three years And turned around and sold it for 3 thousand. The car only required tires and a one day inexpensive shop stay during that time. They got lucky lol. Most used cars would not work that well for that little bit of money

admittedly I didn't listen to the entire broadcast I'm just going through the comments thank you for highlighting that if he's using his car for delivery then he needs to go with a hybrid that's all there is to it he's putting in the miles they are selling Toyota Prius all day long too and $3,000 you might have to do a little work with the battery if you got 6,000 you can probably get a generation 3 car easy and we're talkin flawless we're talkin automobiles with hardly anything wrong with them maybe a small door ding or something like that we're talking cars that have good air conditioning and heater decent stereos and it just don't break down you talk to the number two most reliable automobile the only reason it's number 2 is because the number one most reliable automobile that happens to have the same engine is not a hybrid. Hybrids do have a slighter reliability risk but oddly enough with a hybrid the more you drive it the better it helps out that system so if you're delivering pizza or something like that and you really want to have a hybrid.

@@GEAUXFRUGAL Prius is a great car, BUT on a $3500-4500 budget he is looking at an older model in the 2004-2008 range. The risk of a $3k battery failure would be to risky. I would stick to a small to mid sized 4 cylinder car. Maybe a Corolla, Civic, Accord, Camry, 2008-11 Focus.
I've had several old cheap cars that I had to commute in that didn't give me too much grief. I saved tons on insurance, and interest and payments. I'm very successful now---it really does work.

And yes, despite common asking prices from dealerships there are good, affordable, used cars out there... if you're not out to impress people at stoplights. My first car I bought for myself- in 2004 was a '78 Bonneville with a bad transmission for $600. Replaced the transmission myself for $150 and it was clean! Loved that thing. Sold it for three times what I paid a couple years later.

Shouldn't be too hard to find a dependable used car for 3k. Used cars these days, especially imports made after 1999, are way more dependable than used cars were say in the 1990s. Toyotas and Hondas are a good choice. I'd say a Corolla, Camry, Civic or an Accord would be a good choice.

Some Accords and Civics, most notably after 2000, are surprisingly unreliable.
I had 2003 civic. It was the best! Someone hit me in 2015 and totalled it. I miss that paid for car.
In my city i've found accords and camrys for a good deal around 3k, and older Nissan cars are great, and some GM and Ford's mostly their full size sedans, suvs and trucks are good

I have a 2007 Mitsubishi Galant and let me tell you I have had that car for 6 years . It has 263,000 miles and its still going. I check everything monthly , almost every 3 months I chang the oil . This car has been my life saver and I haven't wasted a lot of money .

The caller points out the issues (which Dave often ignores) about buying too cheap of a used car clunker) in one year you dropped $1400 plus $2000 in repairs...so you are paying about $300 a month for a POS and the headache of it breaking down on you constantly. If you can afford it, buy something a few years old with under 30k miles on it. Should still have a few years of factory warranty on it, and will be, depending on the vehicle, about 30-40% less than what the original MSRP is. Not cheap, but at least you will have piece of mind and not having the headache of constantly taking it to the shop, and then constantly explaining to your boss why you will be late for work.

yes you should. Worst car decision I ever made was to finance a $10k sedan. Best decision I ever made was to sell it 5 years later for $3500 and turn around to buy a pickup truck for the exact same price. Love that truck, and owning it outright is a great feeling.

So true. I bought an 05 Grand Marquis with 45K miles for $4000 from an older woman. It now has 61K miles on it and I haven't had to do a single repair on it yet, just oil changes. It averages 26 mpg which is pretty good for a full size car with a V8. The woman even threw in a set of 4 snow tires that only had one season on them. I love not having car payments!

One important variable about this story is the timing of this young mans ambition and his access to this type of info. Like he said he grew up listening to Dave. I'm 39 and have been listening to Dave for the past couple years and have learned so much. Wishing I had You tube and immediate access to this very important message at 18 rather then a Walkman with cassette tape. The way we can access this information today is huge. Not taking away from this young man who is in fact a rockstar, but we cant ignore the statement from Dave sayin he is kicking our 42 year old butts.
It's so weird I bought a Mitsubishi Galant V6 for $1,800 it had tree damage as in a tree dented the roof and couldn't open the sun roof. Man I drove that thing for 3 years all over from Midwest to NYC to the Carolinas and back. I was truly sad when I had to finally decide to let it go. I put 200k of my own miles on it. Had only minor normal issues. It was my favorite car just due to the price.
I’m at the Honda shop now with my 11 year old Odyssey with 150,000 miles and plan to drive it another 50,000. She gets the job done. Buy a good car, with a good service record and single owner if possible. You can still find good deals out there.
I spent 2,500 on my 1998 Toyota Camry about a year and a half ago. The only thing I have had to do to it was put on some new brakes and buy about 50 of interior parts. I have since then put about 15,000 miles on it. The point is... buy a Toyota

Galants are trash anyway. Toyota or Honda my guy. For 5k you can find something good. Thats what i been doing since ever. Buy and resale every few years to upgrade. Keep the maintenance receipts and you'll get top dollar every time you sale to move up. And like wise whenever your on to your next purchase, ask for maintenance records and such. Good luck.

I've purchased vehicles from auctions for great deals. Just bought a 2017 Hyundai Elantra SEL with 30k miles for $5,087 out the door with fees just needed a front bumper cover, driver airbag and front seatbelts that locked up during a very small minor front end collision. Cost me in airbag, seatbelts and airbag module $600 in parts and was able to ziptie my front bumper for now, no fender damage, hood damage nor frame damage litterally just front bumper/grille. Vehicle came with window sticker msrp in glovebox with a couple dealer add ons was $23k just 2 years ago and im under $6k into it and have a very nice reliable car for many many years so don't overlook unconventional places like auctions

Dave is so right. I never liked Ford's and never intended to buy one, but my wife had a Ford Taurus when we got married. It was easy to work on and there were hundreds of them in the junkyard. Parts from the junkyard are stupid cheap. Even though it broke a lot we saved so much money keeping that car, and I learned that I enjoy working on cars. You can make a lot of fun money working on friend's cars on the weekend.
Oh and this kid is a total rock star
