Reporting from Aug 4th, 2023: Just ReFormated a Early 2015 Macbook Air with 128 GB Flash Storage and 8 GB Ram. MacOS used: Monterey I updated, installed every app i wanted, including my indexing my entire Photo Library. Then i thought about your upgrade: I bought EaseUS To Do Backup, Cloned my drive to a Silicon Power 2TB NVMe M.2 PCIe Gen3x4 2280 SSD. Bought the adapter ofcourse. Thanks for the attention to detail. Popped off old 128 GB Flash Storage Drive, added the cloned NVME+Adapter and Voila! Works like a charm. I am now going to download all my photos and videos from my iCloud just because i can. Thanks for the great video Brady, Easy to pull the trigger on this project. Im about to do the same to my sister in laws mac, and my wife's macbook air. All we do is photo viewing, sending generated memories, and light word processing.
I recently got this MacBook Air in a trade. For what I use laptops for, this is good for me. While I ill say the display isn't the best, it's not the worst I ever seen. Overall, I am pleased with this.
I can agree with you on the display, but it runs so smoothly and runs like new tbh I don't care for all that extra blah, I even upgraded to Monterey on it. Got mine from BackMarket.
Just got the 11in early 2015 MacBook air last week for school. Love the portability and it can be updated to the newest macOS. No lagging and didn't spend no more that $200
I got a second hand early 2015 MacBook air about 3 years ago and I'm still using it. Just upgraded the ssd to 500gb and it runs like a dream for all my school work. The only thing I needed to fix about it was the battery about a year ago. It's awesome and I am going to use this thing until the day it dies on me
I’m thinking of getting a refurbished 2015 macbook air. Seems like a good choice as it’s cheaper and I just need a laptop for school. I know the new macbooks are really great.. but as a student, saving that extra few hundred dollars means a lot. Do you think this laptop will suffice in 2022? Softwares and everything. Any problems like slow loading etc?
Congrats! The unibody air will continue to be a viable option for many who are just looking to perform average daily tasks (especially students!) for years to come. I’ve enjoyed using mine for college.
Seems like the best MacBook for me. I got it for $427 so yeah, worth it for a MacBook as I'm a reseller and need to be able to list on the go and transfer photos easily between systems. AND I can install windows if I want. Great
I have one of these I bought used in 2019. Has the i7 and 8g ram. Still use it for field machine but it needs a new battery and I'd love to upgrade the storage. Was going to go the iFixit mac approved storage route but looks like this will save me quite a bit. Thank you sir!
You can grab a cheap 2015 MacBook Air on back market. I snagged a 2015 11in air for $200 but it was in fair condition. A little more gets you one in better condition. Not the best in terms of hardware but it runs the latest Max Os but windows 10 is much faster. For my needs it’s perfect.
Great video I have an early 2015 with 4 GB and I was getting frustrated as to why I can’t do something as simple as using my Apple ID and now I know I need to upgrade my OS . Thanks for this video I will now order what you recommended .
If you get an OWC ssd you don’t need an adapter it’s plug and play. I also use grizzly thermal paste and thermal pads to keep my 2015 MacBook Air running cooler so it doesn’t throttle. Runs like a dream!
THE EXACT VIDEO i was looking for....my dad bought me a macbook air 2015 last year but it is just not as fast as I need it to be in 2022 for college trying to finesse the system like you
I feel that haha. Exactly what I did. You’ll get a lot out of it! Just make sure you upgrade the latest version of Mac OS before you swap the SSD. The firmware update requires the original SSD to update the bios before you upgrade it to Monterray.
That’s awesome! Thank you for your support, I sincerely appreciate it. I still use my Air from this video daily and love it. Hope you enjoy your MacBook Air!
I did that btw… bought the 2015 MBA a few years ago, put Apple 512gb drive in it for a while then put the ADATA 2TB in it… have all my movies music and pics onboard…
Nice video. I've owned several of that form factor (2010, 2012, 2015 2x). All 11.6" models. I love the portability, and the 2015 11.6" Air is still a good basic task machine. I did spring for i7 models in the 2012 and 2015 units, as it gave a little more oomph to some of the AV tasks that I was doing with them. The i5 is fine for most folks. 8G is a must. While 4G was available back then, the 4G models can struggle.
Did you ever do a detailed video or write up about how you copied the drive to SD card and then back to SSD? Also this video was perfect! My friend gave me his 2015 Air (he did NOT take care of it) and I’m in the process of cleaning it up and doing some upgrades. It’s been a fun project and I didn’t even think of dual booting until you mentioned!
Hey, man! I just grub a Macbook Air 13 (2015) 4/128 yesterday for doing the things for my kids's school iPad. That's really a good deal and I looking for upgrade the storage as your video do. Thx for sharing!! Stay healthy stay happy!!
I have the MBP Early 2015 version 512gb ssd, i5 dual core 8gb ram handed down to me by my bro in law for free. What's surprising is this 7 yr old laptop is only at 510/1000 charge cycles when I got it so the battery was still fine. I just had it cleaned and repasted and it runs good enough for basic tasks (web browsing, emails, streaming netflix) I'll also remove the anti glare film with alcohol to make the screen better. I love the hdmi port since it makes it flexible as a media source.
I recently got this very MacBook Air on a barter deal & I really like it. It has 256GB SSD & 8GB of RAM. I like it a lot! I now have a complete Apple ecosystem.
MacBook Air 2017 is absolutely fast for 99,99% of users even nowadays. It even plays 4K videos without any delays and of course it can render them fast.

I feel SO GOOD now about my somewhat impulsive buy of a 2017 macbook air. Ive never owned a macbook before and wanted to buy something cheaper, now im almost happier I bought the older model!!
It was a bit of an impulse by for me too haha! Really glad you've liked yours. It's such a solid laptop even in 2022. The build quality and software support from Apple are amazing.

As much as I like reusing old tech, you will probably spend more money in the long term, as you’ll need to upgrade faster compared to a modern M1 MacBook. Definitely more of a holdover for college students until they can get a new one after graduation.

Awesome video! Outstanding content and production quality!! Are you still using your MacBook Air? Maybe a "1 Year Later" video? :). I'm looking at a 2015 MacBook Air 13" for around $250. I just want it as a second computer to my M1 Mac Mini.
Hey dude. What a video. Totally underrated. I am looking to pick up a MacBook for general usage as I have a great PC for my main tasks. My most resource heavy task would be using Photoshop. So it's come down to this, either the 2015 MacBook Air or the mid 2012 MacBook Pro. Which one would you suggest? I personally like the design of the 2012 MBP. But would buying the Air 2015 be a smarter decision? Thanks mate!
I recently bought the same MacBook Air with a faulty battery for 160€. Then I paid 60€ for a new battery. Now when I use the MBA unplugged it shuts down with around 20% battery left (used to be around 30%). I guess I still need to recalibrate it by completely draining and then charging the battery in one go.
It depends on your use case, if you’re looking for a great all-around ultra book for average daily tasks(web browsing and writing documents) you can’t go wrong with one!
Man, this is a really great video... thank you so much! Just a question, after the upgrade, did you experience some incident? I've heard some people have to restart the MacBook after it went to sleep.
@@ClipPlayTV I just got a 2017 a couple of weeks ago but the space it's been kind of a pain. I'll do this upgrade probably with the 1TB disk. Thank you so much again!

Hi Brady, how you’re doing? Very informative video. Anyway just wondering whether the RAM is upgradeable if we purchase the 4GB version. Best regards!
Nah I don’t think that u can modify it without losing warranty
Hey Afrizal! The RAM is soldiered in unfortunately, so you’ll need to prioritize looking for a model with 8GB
@@ClipPlayTV Noted with thanks. Take care!
@@owenevans3703 Thanks Owen.
Yes. It’s upgradable. I’ve upgraded mine maxed out to 16gb ram.
This is so helpful but can I edit basic videos please do reply
The production quality!!!! Excellent video bro. Just subscribed.
Should I buy a MacBook Air 2017 in 2022 I’m thinking about buying one
It depends on your use case, if you’re looking for a great all-around ultra book for average daily tasks(web browsing and writing documents) you can’t go wrong with one!
Man, this is a really great video... thank you so much! Just a question, after the upgrade, did you experience some incident? I've heard some people have to restart the MacBook after it went to sleep.
Thanks so much John!
Glad it was helpful.
My 2015 has been totally fine
@@ClipPlayTV I just got a 2017 a couple of weeks ago but the space it's been kind of a pain. I'll do this upgrade probably with the 1TB disk. Thank you so much again!
Really great video thanks for your efforts
Excellent video! Keep it up, really helped me make the decision! 🙌
I install linux mint on this machine and it’s doing amazing
Very practical, thanks
No problem!
would you consider doing a more in depth tutorial?
Good review. But how did u tolerate the 1440×900 display?! No retina, no color gamut and weak viewing angles.
Low expectations. Fr
Love your editing style! subbed!
Am I the only one to feel Obi-Wan Kenobi’s vibe after his “Hello There”?😂. Great video tho
