    I got myself an 11” inch MacBook Air 2015 with 8GB RAM and 256GB ssd in 2018 for $450 on eBay (nowadays you can still get them for around $250-300). Still using it now in 2022 for basic task like web browsing, music, content consumption, document editing and light gaming on Steam. Those things are awesome (it can run Monterey - sadly that’ll be the last supported MacOS version). Battery down to 80% capacity but I think I will replace the battery and it would give at least 2-3 more years of use out of it.

    My day-to-day Mac until recently was the last iteration of that old design with wide silver bezel, except 13-inch version, from 2017. It runs latest MacOS (Monterey) well and never felt slow to me for doing the things I do on a Mac… Until I started using my M1 MacBook. Now it feels somewhat slow in comparison, and its not-Retina screen doesn’t look as good. But it’s still very usable; I like the old-school USB ports, TB2/DisplayPort, MagSafe, plus SD card slot. I plan to do what you demonstrated… Connect to a large display and use it as a desktop Mac most of the time. So thanks for showing that your older model does fine with everyday tasks.

    I noticed the FPS on an external display can come down to the adapter.
    On my M1 MBP I got 4k 30fps using a bog standard adapter, but 4k 60fps using a Thunderbolt (USB-C) to DisplayPort cable. That said, the specs page for that MacBook Air doesn't say what FPS you can use, I guess it is 24fps.

    • @asawarai
      @asawarai 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My 2013 11” MBA can do 60 fps, I think it was either his adapter or just a compatibility issue with his huge monitor.

    • @mysteryboyee
      @mysteryboyee 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its probably the resolution of his monitor, back in 2013-2014 4k30 was hard for computers to push out, much less 4k60, 1080p60-1080p75 was the norm, if you want to use this older mba with an external monitor, that'd be the way to go, a 1080p monitor

    She used to Lightroom on it too and that was a struggle. And edit our church videos which would take 12 hours to render a 1 hour sermon.

Of late I mainly use it as a dual-boot Linux machine with Linux Mint running most days because pretty much everything runs so smoothly and it's better with RAM. That said, I can and do boot MacOS on it whenever I need to run Mac-only software. I even use Windows on it, in VirtualBox, to run TurboTax (Windows only app). Really great how well a 10-year old device can still get a lot of useful things done. 👍

      It really depends on your situation and your needs. I used windows computers my whole life but switched to the m1 MacBook Air in 2021 and I’ve loved it. For me, the most important things were: price to performance, screen bright enough to use outside on an average day, battery life/portability, ability to take written notes and drawings, and build quality/durability.
      I bought an iPad Air, Apple Pencil, and MBA for just over $1500. The windows 2-in-1s I was looking at did not offer comparable battery life, screen brightness, build quality, and power unless I went up in price or compromised on something I wanted. I wasn’t comparing the zbook studio anyway because it’s not a 2-in-1, but it’s also like 3x the price of the MacBook and 2x my budget so that’s completely out of the question.
      I get that my situation is unique since I’m a student that was used to taking written notes on my old dell 2-in-1. I was comparing windows 2-in-1s to a Mac/ipad combo, but that’s why I mean it really depends on your needs. M1 made the base model MacBook Air a good choice for me so I bought one and have been more than happy with it.

    This is really strange, but I did this exact thing over the past weekend... and then saw you do the same thing after the fact. Gotta say though that for $3 more you could have had a 2015 MBA 11 that is supported by macOS Monterey. That price was on Newegg, though. I'd argue that the 2015 MBA 11 is a much better deal given the bump to 5th gen Core processors and graphics. You ought to try doing a video edit with it to really put it through its paces.

    So much better than any new laptop you could get for ~$200 by a long shot (*cough* Chromebooks and HP Streams) but it's still an impressively poor value compared to old used laptop PCs of a similar price.
    This machine with its i5-4260U (2c/4t up to 2.7GHz with 1.4GHz base) and 4GB of RAM with a 128GB SSD, and its tiny low-res display costs $186.
    If you just simply go on eBay, you actually can find these for like $100. So let's assume that is what you pay for one of these.
    A used ThinkPad W540 is $200, and comes with an i7-4900MQ, 16GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and even a discrete NVIDIA Quadro (fairly weak tho, but better than iGPU!)
    The i7-4900MQ absolutely *buries* that little low-power i5 with a Passmark score well over double, meaning that for exactly double the price, it is the better value. And that's just the CPU, we're not considering the more powerful discrete GPU (the K2100M), quadruple the RAM, and the larger SSD. The actual laptop itself also sports a higher resolution (1080p) and larger display, far more ports, better cooling, and better repairability and expandability internally. Not to mention, it has an externally swappable battery, meaning that you can just simply bring a couple extra batteries with you to circumvent the battery life being worse on the higher power CPU. The keyboard on the W540 is also far better, with higher travel on the keys and more tactile feedback. These things all make it a far better daily use laptop, apart from the fact that it is a substantially larger machine. It's not a problem for me even though I take my laptop with me to work and school every day and constantly move it around, but to each their own.
    They're definitely machines meant for different people (the Air is obviously a thin and light while the W540 is a gigantic mobile workstation that comes in at almost 7 pounds and over an inch thick), but if anyone is watching this video and thinking that buying one of these is a good idea if you want a powerful used laptop to save money and get more performance than a newer one, don't. There's so many options out there (the ThinkPad just being one of several examples) that perform better for not much more money.

    I took your advice and bought the 2020 MacBook Air with the M1 Chip for a sale price on Amazon for new of $749 before taxes. I want you to know that I am very pleased with my purchase. I bought a case for it right away and a fan mat for my lap. I thought it would help it stay cool. But now I have to purchase a hub for it as the fan can't connect since it doesn't have one of those portals on it. On my Asus Chromebook, it works great since that Chromebook gets very hot even with fans. Not all the time but when I'm on it for 6 or more hours. I was able to put my VPN and antivirus software on it without too much trouble. The battery life is amazing. I charge my Asus a couple of times when I'm up and working on it. I treat it so carefully to make sure the battery is taken care of. I have to get used to the Apple ecosystem. Thank you again for your information regarding the 2020 MacBook Air M1 chip!

    So a MacBook like this for basic stuff will last you a year or so.. If you're looking for something to pull you through 6-8 years though.. it's best to save and get something with an M1 or M2. I'm confident I'll get a decade out of my M1 MacBook Air.

    I just bought a macbook pro 13” Late 2013 with 8gb/128gb for only $280, i got it cheap bc the speakers are crackling but its not that much of an issue since i always use my sony buds with it. I used OCLP to upgrade to Monterey 12.4 for the sake of universal control and its running smoothly and i dont experience lags since i basically just use it for browsing, meetings, school, and microsoft apps.

    i had a Mid 2012 Macbook pro 💻 that i used for like 9 years and then it just randomly shut down and never turned on again. I took it to a mac Specialist repair shop and they said it was the Logic board and would cost over $250 to fix which is more than the computer is worth.
    So i got an M1 Macbook air lol.
    i still wana find a way to fix my 2012 MB pro if anyone had any ideas of where to find a reasonably priced logic board
