...back in the day, I NEVER had a decent coach tell me any of this! Wow! I was largely self-taught and managed to take 1st place at my school's Region's Track & Field Meet in the 110m high hurdles my senior year. I essentially through Trial & Error had to figure out my cadence of 6 steps out of blocks to 1st hurdle, THEN 1-2-3-KICK! then repeat until over last hurdle! I LOVE the hurdles to this day! I got to the State meet that senior year, but was not competitive enough. Great memories though ;) Wish you were my coach back in the day!
thank you so much! i know what i must do now to improve my block start. my back is hunched over, and my shoulders are way in front of my hands/four arm. when i'm in the set position my head and shoulders are ling over the line. and of yes, i'm stepping out of the blocks! i had a friend take a video of my start one day so i compared it to the teachings of this video. i basically was the male version of her. i'm glad i could try to get better before season comes around, thank you.
In reality you have to find the right position for you through trial and error. I have always had bad starts since high school and now as a senior in college, I think I have finally found the right starting position for my body type. One tip I can give is to get into the set position without blocks and if you feel comfortable in that set position, match the block pedals with the position of your feet. So yes have block next to you when you get into the set position and match the distance from the line to your front and back block exactly as your feet were in the set position. From there make any adjustments.
Lol was anyone else patiently waiting for when we would actually see her run 😂 Ik I was but very good info in this video it was very nice u my friend have earned a new like and subscriber
+CompleteTrack my coach's argument is that leaning over the line will force gravity to "make" you get out of the blocks. I feel much quicker out of the blocks when I lean over, but I understand you won't get as much power from your legs. I've never experienced stumbling out of blocks leaning over either. I've experienced more of a "push" from gravity and having my weight over the line.
+Brady Bess Well you do what works for you. I won't debate science and even if you agree with me you still have to do what your coach says. That said, sprinters should never feel 'quick' out of blocks. 'Quick' is the kiss of death for fast starts and finishes. When it's done correctly, it should feel slow.
Good video. My daughter is a decent sprinter but has had zero instruction on block starts or even running. Her running form has come along well since last year but the lack of starting instruction is losing her probably a half second. We're hoping to work on block starts this weekend (she actually wants to), and I'm gonna reference a lot of this video. I don't know if she will take my instruction but from the video maybe I can get her to open up. :-) I would like to know more about your thoughts after a runner is out of the blocks and on there way through the first 10 yards.
+vanessia lynch Look down at the start. Swing the arms vigorously when starting. Come up slowly. Practice with the blocks a lot and try and get the most comfortable position.
+Miss CuteTea Hey, we're all afraid of that happening, it can really happen to anyone so you just need to focus on keeping your feet in the right place. It might have not even been your block start, just a running accident, always embarrassing
Either your angle was too narrow or the muscles in your thigh aren’t getting where they need to be fast enough. Make sure your arms are over your hands in the set position and that your ankles in the blocks aren’t set at an angle too steep for you. If your thigh isn’t getting there fast enough, do plyometric exercises such as jumping over a bar as fast as you can for an hour to develop fast-twitch muscles! :)
I did the same thing at tryouts the other day. Smacked my head on the ground and ended up leaving to check for a concussion and get ice on it. One of the coaches told me to come back for the first practice session. Not sure I want to go back 😅😭
her coach has her using blocks. Running 100.200, and the 400 times 100/13 200/27-27.80 and 400/104 she need help not keeping up with the rest of ther time.
Why is she using a kangaroo start? That close block placement has not been used at the elite level since the 1930s. We see it much too often at the high school level leading to choppy stride patterns.

"1,2,3 take a nap, eat a sandwich, you're out of the final" LOL! Classic Latif.
I'm glad you showed the mistakes...most every other vid shows the perfect ones.
lol take a nap eat a sandwich your outta the final love that XD its so true
Her form was still bad
You are very very good at explaining techniques. Thank you.
the whole attack the ground/ dont wait for it thing sounds pretty common sense but might actually be part of whats wrong with my start
Lol was anyone else patiently waiting for when we would actually see her run 😂 Ik I was but very good info in this video it was very nice u my friend have earned a new like and subscriber
ive been taught to lean over the line......
+Munib Abid Same here, also nice profile pic
+Brady Bess HAHAHAHAHAHAHA CRACK UP *
+Munib Abid +Brady Bess Leaning over the line causes you to stumble out of the blocks.

Do you have a video where it shows what a perfect takeoff looks like ans broke down?
What software are you using for your slow motions and lines? Thanks 😊
Hi. What programm did u use for the analysis? I like the line and arrow things!
If I post a video of my start could you critique it for me
No
The basic concept of pushing out is a good one, however -- thanks.
What drill or practice can improve starting technic?
Great video! Thanks.... You're very good.
Yeah
Does Latif post videos anymore? Does he have a new channel?

Daughter runs track 13 yrs old. Need help in form and coming out of the blocks
cool
+vanessia lynch First, stop letting her use blocks. Completetrackandfield.com will help with all elements of her form.
+vanessia lynch Look down at the start. Swing the arms vigorously when starting. Come up slowly. Practice with the blocks a lot and try and get the most comfortable position.
Awsome video!
Where cud I post a vid of my start for u to n critic on me ? I really need the help his one..
The other day I started off a block and after 2 steps I fell and it was embarrassing. What did I do wrong? Please help

+vanessia lynch She needs to get stronger and be patient. Those are solid times for a 13 year old!
Daughter feeling like she is not progressing. 400 is 101 and she feels like she should be going faster. I feel bad because I want to help her.
Thank you
good
Thankyou
Bad positioning, that a good way to eat track
I don’t know who the f this guy is, but according to his technique alot of the top olympic speinters are doing wrong.

um.... if you look at her back angle on her first step it should be straight not rounded up..
Waste of time.
Most HS coaches! Just saying
you're not actually 'just saying' anything.
