But Islam prevents people from learning not only other religious texts, but even scientific things.
For that matter even Christianity does the same. But today , Christians dont listen much to those religious heads.

I read the Autobiography of a Yogi in 1960, when I was 16. It became my Bible. I have been practicing the Kriya Yoga every day since 1964. What has it done for me? Remarkable inner bliss and happiness. No matter what happens in the outer, I can sit for a little while in meditation and be filled with love and peace. THANKS, Yogananda. Also, I am NOT a member of ANY spiritual or religious organization....no need: While meditating, Yogananda, Jesus, et al come to me inwardly. All people become my fellow parishioners.

In 1972 was living and surfing in Jeffery's Bay, South Africa when a man, out of the blue, gave me a copy of Yogananda's book. Like all who have read it, my life changed. A few months earlier I had, for want of a better word, undergone a spiritual awakening. The timing of receiving his book immediately after those experiences tied it all together and set me on the path of Love, for life. I love you Paramahansa Yogananda.

The 2 volume book he wrote on Christ, I dont think thats been changed but they made a shorter book based on that, I read it and its good. Nothing seemed too different from what yogananda was saying But it is true of autobiography, so get the original version. Not a big difference though. SRF in general sort of softened a lot of his teachings but thats not a big problem to me. The only thing I dont really like is that Yogananda authorized other americans and other people to teach and carry on the lineage, but after he died, SRF released a statement that said to pray to yogananda and that he was the last of the guru lineage, and that there would be no others after him from the organization. So the organization has been somewhat less alive ever since he passed, but organizations dont matter. The important thing is the message and that there are people alive who are carrying on this kriya tradition. See the work of Roy Eugene Davis, he is my favorite disciple of yogananda who was directly authorized to teach. Yogananda sent him off to run the PHX center early on and he ended up setting up his own center in Lakemont Georgia. The Center for spiritual awareness. Check it out, he teaches Yoganandas teachings directly as Yogananda instructed him, with no embellishment. They are not radically different from SRF though, just more getting to the point of the matter.

I'm not keen on Islam, sharia law is gross. But the moderate Muslims I've met here in America aren't to keen on Sharia either, that's why they came here. The Koran could use some weeding, get the bad ideas out of it.
I'm leaving this on a thread because I want it to be read...
I read 'Autobiography of a Yogi' about 30 years ago. Very interesting book. Yogananda described seeing a paranormal manifestation that I witnessed about 6 months before reading his book. I didn't doubt what I saw, it was real and amazing. I had been practicing raja yoga for a year plus before seeing the amazing thing. This is important, through Yogananda describing the exact same thing he saw I knew I had been given a blessing when I saw the amazing thing. Piqued yet about what I saw?
It was a blue lightening storm inside the house, clinging to the walls like ivy. I believe now that I saw St. Elmo's fire, a phenomenon possibly related to ball lightening, and I didn't see a touch of it, it was all over the walls and I walked through it. OK, I saw what many people have accounts of seeing, including Darwin inside the HMS Beagle, Caesar saw it too. The difference between what I saw and all other accounts, including Yogananda's, is this; what I saw displayed intelligence, it reacted to something going on in the house. I believe I was contacted by God, a type of abstract writing on the wall. This was the last piece I needed to become Christian for real. Logic says that no man can rise from the dead. I have no solid interpretation of what I saw, I can only guess at it. But what I saw was so amazing that I am able to completely believe that God sent a son to Earth named Jesus on a mission to reach people like you and me with a message of love, hope and peace, and his son died and rose to life to prove he was God's messenger. Anything is possible. I can believe Jesus is God's son and God at the same time. To come back to life he sure wasn't your average bear! Jesus could have merged with God while meditating in the badlands for those 40 days he went missing. He came back to the disciples different than when he left. Jesus might be the worlds only super yogi, not just seeing the universal form, but merging with it, merging with God and staying with God and becoming God.
If you think I'm crazy, then Yogi Yogananda is crazy too. If you think I'm lying, then Yogi Yogananda is lying too. I know he was telling the truth and isn't crazy because I saw the same thing. And if that bit of story is true then there is no reason to doubt anything in the rest of his book. Might be time for me to read it again, after 30 years of letting it rest.

I remember my husband handing me a book by Paramanhasa Yogananda at Barnes and nobles. I read in one of the pages that says " The kingdom of God is not in the clouds or somewhere out there in the sky but the kingdom of God is within you ". It somehow impacted me and it made me contemplate about what I read and made me contemplated my life in general. From then on I met many spiritual gurus with the same teachings in books and the internet.

2019 was his first time to say "hello" to you in this lifetime maybe? It doesn't mean HE is the one to give you all your answers but he also Might be the One. Stay true to the teachings and you will find your own universal truths. A guru certainly helps. Use discernment, wisdom and love if you choose a guru or they say they have chosen you. Feel from the heart. Yogananda's teachings are the safest route but you may not be into "the safest route". Karma is involved in everything. Whatever route you go, best journey to you my friend. Yeah I like a lot of Indian spiritually and knowledge they have recorded books about all this going 15 thousand years or more... And people are threatened by yoga it simply means union with life... I don't get the fear ..some christian woman on TH-cam says I started going to yoga classes and felt all this darkness and evil forces and she was literally doing yoga classes stretching out that's all ... You mean to tell me doing some stretching caused you evil??? Lmao no more like someone brainwashed you.. I am a Christian I absolutely love Jesus Christ but I listen to other people who are Yogi's and Buddhist they have great knowledge and love for people .. it doesn't affect my love of Jesus and I know Jesus loves them and wherever the act of kindness and love exists and truth I believe God is there we need to drop the label games imo.. love to all

Those who are interested in the history of spirituality should take note that Swami Vivekananda was the first Hindu guru to travel to the West. He addressed the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893, and went on to found several spiritual centers which are part of the Vedanta Society today.

I was driving in the City, I am thinking it was around 2005, suddenly I felt like I was being directed and I started turning down back roads until I pulled up in front of a second hand store. I walked in and headed straight to a bookshelf at the back left and pulled the book right out.
Paid for it and left. I had never heard of him before and was quite amazed by what I read. Even my husband was compelled to read it.
I think this was my first experience with this inner voice.

Previous lifetimes maybe. You yourself is the truth so explore the truth of yourself inside you.
Every universe is covered by seven layers - earth, water, fire, air, sky, the total energy and false ego - each ten times greater than the previous one. There are innumerable universes besides this one, and although they are unlimitedly large, they move about like atoms in You. Therefore You are called limitless (Bhagavata Purana 6.16.37)
Because You are limitless, neither the lords of heaven nor even You Yourself can ever reach the end of Your glories. The countless universes, each enveloped in its shell, are compelled by the wheel of time to wander within You, like particles of dust blowing about in the sky. The śrutis, following their method of eliminating everything separate from the Supreme, become successful by revealing You as their final conclusion (Bhagavata Purana 10.87.41)

Vivekananda taught Advaita Vedanta, and Raja Yoga is considered one of its tools. Swamis Abhenananda and Paramananda preceded Yogananda as teachers/residents in America, one In NYC (1897), the other in Boston (1906). But once again they were teaching Advaita Vedanta. Swami Paramananda was doing lecture tours across America before Yogananda. The current leader of Ananda Ashrama, which was founded by Paramananda in La Crescenta, CA, says that Yogananda was a great friend and visited there. It's only a few miles from SRF Mother Center on Mt. Washington in L A. Both were Bengali and devotees of Divine Mother.

I am here, your brother and friend, Yogananda.
I wish to explain the differences and similarities in meditation and prayer. These things sometimes separate, but can also be the same. In traditional Eastern meditation, one is taught to go within, to let the mind go, to find the stillness in the center of one’s being in the heart chakra area, to relax the body completely but maintain awareness. In this place there is peace, there is a oneness.
In my own teaching, where I presented Kriya Yoga, learned through my teacher Sri Yukteswar, I focused on this going within and allowing the body to be a vessel of light, opening each chakra so that it was as if there was a beam of light extending from the lowest chakra all the way up through the Sahasrara (crown chakra) into the heavens. I presented this in a very scientific way and this method in the West became every well-known back in my day. Many thousands of people tried this approach with great success, finding great peace, feeling the light, feeling the oneness with the cosmic forces and the consciousness of love pervading their being.
I must confess, my own meditation was a bit different. I went within and of course I experienced tremendous bliss and energies in being at one with the cosmos and often had visions (third eye - 6th Chakra) as you know. But I also spoke to God from the longings in my soul, sometimes just very simply asking for my soul to be at one with God. Other times I would have questions about my work, situations that had arisen, such as my separation from my homeland. At the beginning, my wondering why am I here? How can I possibly be successful at this mission my guru has given me? All those questions were answered in prayer. But also, my deep desire in my soul to connect with the Creator brought God’s Love into my soul and began to transform it. So I would mention to my students, talk to God, think about God all the time.
I always gave credit to God, not wanting the focus to be on myself. At no time did I seek to be worshiped as God on Earth, but rather as someone who had self-realized what I call Christ-Consciousness, at-oneness with God. Where there are ashrams and monasteries and temples where devotees pray, there is often a rapport created between the heavens and those longing to connect with their Creator beyond the oneness of feeling at one with the universe, into the gloriousness of truly feeling at-one in love with the Creator.
This indeed is the meaning of the words in the Gospels when Jesus says “I and the Father are one.” He did not mean he was God. In the East when they interpret that wrongly as God incarnate, with Jesus or any other teachers they are in error. For truly He was the first divine Son of God, but there have been others, although He is the greatest. Are not we all children of God, sons and daughters of our Creator who wishes us all to be at-one with His essence which is the Divine Love?
So my intention today is to draw a bridge, create a bridge between the meditation of going within and being at-one with Creation and the universe and opening up in humbleness to our Creator to receive the Great Love which is given to all who ask. If we take the meditation of going within and the humble prayer of reaching out for the Essence of the Creator to be ours, we can call this a Divine Love meditation, for it is a combination of the two - prayer and meditation.
I would encourage you to go within and be calm. Find that place in your heart, in your soul where there is the beautiful natural love given to all. Allow your mind to become still, your heart to be opened, your body to be at peace. Allow for the longings of your souls to reach the Creator in the humbleness that is required in the recognition of the Great One. This is truly becoming transformed in Christ-Consciousness, becoming anointed with the love of the Creator. Being transformed as a soul from the mere image of God to at-onement with the very substance of God and immortality, eternal life. This is the gift that is offered from our most loving Creator. I encourage you to ask, for you truly shall receive.
I thank this one for taking the time to receive this message which I have longed to give to my students and to the world. May you all be blessed and transformed in God’s Love. I love you and I thank you. Go in peace. I am your brother and friend in the celestial heavens, Yogananda. Thank you. God Bless you.

Yogananda's contribution is very hard to measure. When Lady Frieda Harris released her paintings of the Thoth tarot deck she gave a speech in the gallery calling each card 'a mediation' piece. While not as widespread meditation, prayer and concentration existed in London during the 1920s.

No one is saying the word meditation did not exist before him, its just there was before yogananda and after and it is a big huge canyon like difference in our culture as a result. I think it is very measurable but not down to the inch, no.

I read about his death and how there was an absence of any visual signs of decay and no physical disintegration visible in his body even twenty days after his death......No odor of deacy emanted from his body at anytime- Mr. Harry T. Rowe, Los Angeles Mortuary Director, Forest Lawn Memorial Park, sent Self-Realization Fellowship a notorized letter regarding him entering mahasamadhi( a yogi's final conscious exit from the body). This was enough awakening for the hunger and thirst for his Autobiography!!!
