My Magnum R/T weight about 4300 lbs. I am going to twin turbo it, and try and do a roadtrip to California and see how many MPG's I get. Thanks C&D for the vid and idea! Really enjoyed it!
Nope, you read correct. In some states like Cali, 91 is top grade because some of those in charge don't like people to have fast cars and 91 is the highest usually sold. Honestly though street racing is a larger issue there than many places. The highest commonly available in the US is 93. But also the system used to determine grade is different than some countries, namely European and I think Asian as well, giving a different # for the same actual grade.
26.4 MPG, that's incredible. I get the same kind of mileage with my 98 ES300 - it's a 3 liter V6 with 200hp, and the car weighs around 3500lbs. The best I've done was 27.5 and my range is only around 400 miles to a tank.
This was very nice, and that's a fine-looking example inside and out. I prefer the V8. It's on my short list, and Santa has occasionally come through, so it's possible...
Thanks for this video. I am from Cali but I have been away in the east for about 3 months and this made me really home sick.. love and know all those freeways! doing 70 MPH on the 5?!?? I'm sure semis were passing you.. this is a grand Tourer. crazy price, but really nice..
I had been considering the Aston Martin Rapide but I'm now seriously thinking that the Bentley makes as much if not more sense. And don't tell me that people who buy cars like this don't care about gas mileage because we do, as much for the sheer, damn inconvenience of constantly hunting for gas stations and filling up! It makes us feel a tiny bit greener too....just a tiny bit!
Doug M Have you decided yet? I have a friend who currently has a Rapide (not the s) and he loves it. However he really doesn’t drive it more than 600 miles a year (kinda sad). I know the Bentley’s are nicer in depreciation when you put miles on them compared to Aston Martin’s lineup. Someone I recently met told me about how he had the opportunity to drive a Lamborghini Gallardo, GT2RS, Continental with the W12, and many more. He said out of all of them he would choose the Bentley. Perfect combination of sportiness and pure relaxation.
I'm leaning towards the Bentley even more now, recently visited the Bentley factory in Crewe and met a guy from my home town of Glasgow who may be selling his GT V8. It's a 2012 V8 model with only 8k miles on it!!! In my mind that means I could get 95% of the new car for 50% of its new price!
Also one other little factoid, US mpg figures are worth about another 4 UK/imperial mpg. Meaning you can add at least another 4mpg to the average figure on any vehicle tested in the US.
Weight only plays a small role in cornering. It involves more of grip which means thick sticky tires and lots of downforce pressing the car down hard on the road when turning fast. Also the center of gravity helps a lot as well.
Your are very correct, but for high performance brands like ferrari I think lightness is more for cornering ability and to make the engine a much better match for the vehicle
True, these designers should have put a 4 cyl in this car and then the fuel economy would be great and we could put them on the "Green Awards". Your name by the way illustrates my point. "SHO" - ....Reppin the best of the Taurus lineup I see...Good Call on the spark plugs too...lol I feel your sarcasm
Bear in mind that US fuel is MON rated whereas EU fuel is RON and MON is around 8-10 points lower than RON, so 91 octane fuel in the States is equivalent to 98-99 RON Super unleaded in the UK and EU.
That's pretty good for a 500hp 5Klb awd mega lux car :D I have done a few mileage experiments with my 2011 Mustang GT 6A (3800#s)and F150 scab 4x4 5.0 3.55 rear(5500#s). In cruise at 65mph I have gotten 31mpg with the car with A/C off on 93oct and in cruise at 60mph in the truck I have gotten 26mpg with the A/C off on 93oct.
I think it's just a point to put out there to make it more impressive. I mean the thing can do 0-60 in less than 5 seconds which is impressive, but even more impressive factoring in the weight.
Would you say that US roads are more or less congested? Is the typical US driver (or average US driver then) more likely to drive further and spend longer in their car?
Laws of physics says the more weight/mass an object has, the more the energy is required to move it. So more mass equals worse acceleration, top speed, braking, fuel economy, and etc. That is why most automakers, especially performance brands like Ferrari, is trying to make their vehicles as light as possible. So weight is a factor in everything.
In US rating 91 AKI is pretty much same as 95 Ron in Australia, and in east coast where i live in USA, 93 AKI is premium which is equivalent to 98 ron in Australia.
1:48 - It has an alternator that draws power from the battery? The point of the alternator is to keep the battery charged. If it draws power from the battery, it'll just be using the power it just generated, wouldn't it?
USA has MON 91 octane. Thats like 95RON in europe and aus. So it's not to bad. 98RON in europe is normal premium fuel. In some country's you have 100RON. and in germany some pumps even have 102RON. You really feel the differents betweens 98 and 102. When I'm at the nurburgring i always get 102. The engine response gets mutch better and it feels more happy to rev.
Does anyone who can afford this car give a crap about mpg? Maybe, and only because you have to pump gas 50% less often, avoiding a pain in the arse. I never heard of "hypermiling", so I was expecting something else. Thankfully, you delivered it towards the end of the vid.
not sure you guys said, but it'd be useful to know the volumetric capacity of this car's fuel tank. a critical piece of info for a segment such as this.
idk, but I have always known that to get maximum "mileage" from a car you have to go 80 kmph in top gear (or close) but even on the road the speed limits almost never want you to go at that optimum speed, its almost always 60 or 110 kmph...
I don't think the 19k matters at all. Bentley is making it to reduce the emissions on its fleet of cars. People that do not understand cars will say that it is "greener". The only logical reason to buy it over the W12 is the lower weight plus the beautiful sound.
I wouldn't mind letting people know it's the V8 if I ever own one. In fact I want people to know because getting the V8 over the W12 means I'm a wiser man. Red badges are cool too.
i think bentley should just drop the standard W12 designation and just have the V8 and the Speed model. insideline tested the V8 as having faster acceleration than the standard W12
its all in how you drive your car my saab 9-3 gets 37 mpg's when im babying in on the interstate, but when im mashing the gas and having a bit of fun it can sink below the 20mpg mark
US use (MON +RON)/2 number, most of the rest of the world use RON numbers only, which are typically 8 to 12 higher than MON for the same fuel. Which means that our numbers are about 6 higher than US for same fuel i.e. 97 fuel is 91 in us.
What was highway ONLY consumption? My Lexus LS460 which is their biggest luxury 4.6L with an 8 speed, can hit 33 MPG on a smooth highway. Start and stop is atrocious mpg... but I can get 33 at 70mph. How about the Bentley?
US drivers definitely spend more time on the road and in their cars. In Europe, we rarely eat in cars and we don't drive around like in america. Gas is expensive in europe
beautiful car but 60 in a 70 is not realistic... what does it get doing 70-80 and in mixed conditions? probably low 20s mpg .. pretty good imo for a big car... better than my Ridgeline.
When you are forking over north of $200K for a car, I highly doubt that its fuel mileage is going to be the first thing that you consider when buying said vehicle..
this might actually be the first thing car and driver has ever posted that i dodn't really hate! : )
1:47 "it's got a smart alternator that draws energy from the the battery not the engine"? why what is this guy really saying?
Thank you for proving what I've been saying for some time: it's not what you drive but how you drive it when it comes to fuel economy.
My Magnum R/T weight about 4300 lbs. I am going to twin turbo it, and try and do a roadtrip to California and see how many MPG's I get. Thanks C&D for the vid and idea! Really enjoyed it!
So ten years later, how much fun has your twin turbo installation been?
Nope, you read correct. In some states like Cali, 91 is top grade because some of those in charge don't like people to have fast cars and 91 is the highest usually sold. Wow great video he didn’t even wanna hit on it, go 10 under the speed limit lmao
That was a great review. I loved how you structured it with the hyper-miling start and then the performance bit in the end. Great job!
487 lb ft of torque at 1700 rpm's is very nice driving around town.
Thanks for this video. I am from Cali but I have been away in the east for about 3 months and this made me really home sick.. love and know all those freeways! doing 70 MPH on the 5?!?? I'm sure semis were passing you.. this is a grand Tourer. crazy price, but really nice..
this is the exact Conti GT i would buy, down to the colors. the blue is absolutely stunning.
This was a really great video, Thank you..
Awesome vid, so well presented. Thanks.
Usually not into luxury cars but that is just a beaut. Especially the interior.
Yes, VAG (Volkswagen Automotive Group) owns Bentley. The 4.0T TFSi motor in this car is an Audi engine (basically the same as the D4S8 motor).
I had been considering the Aston Martin Rapide but I'm now seriously thinking that the Bentley makes as much if not more sense. And don't tell me that people who buy cars like this don't care about gas mileage because we do, as much for the sheer, damn inconvenience of constantly hunting for gas stations and filling up! that was awesome! Thanks Car and Driver!! I want that car
Love this!!! Totally Love this!!!
Really have to get this car one day! :D
Agree me too
Hope you finally bought it? 9yrs later!
@@Item7GO Unfortunately, nope..
Hahaha
Excellent video, thanks!
Excellent review!
Where is that Road is it up near Redding CA??
What a great review.
Really informative :)
Also one other little factoid, US mpg figures are worth about another 4 UK/imperial mpg. Meaning you can add at least another 4mpg to the average figure on any vehicle tested in the US.
Great production. Well done.
That metallic dark purple paint job looks like it was created just for this car....on point.
So Epic So Fun To Drive, 2012 The Sky Is The Limit.

Love it......cant wait to upgrade

it depends on the state, some states require oth frnt and rear plate, and some states only require rear plates

oh my god you are Carly and Brian i love Eli belly i love your videos and Jesse and Jenna's videos you guys are awesome!!!!

NEW Bentley Continental GT car, that is my friendly car. That's very good.
Realy it's AmazinG Car.....Thanks For This Video ^^

Wow didn't know that, thanks for clearing that up!
What's the lowest octane you can get in America?
I saw a nice white 1990's GMC. That would be a load of fun with an LSX 454...
Wow I really like this guy!
Thank you so much!
Great video....

woop woop!!! our crib

I'm getting this for my birthday!!!
Max Schneider Jealous ass.

Beautiful color
Agreed. I think it's Dark Sapphire.
Such and amazing and gorgeous car, although I would buy the standard W12 (not the Speed version) if I had the money.
Doesn't matter to a person who is buying a $200k car in the first place...
You remind me of Paul Kellerman from Prison Break, when you're talking with your glasses on.
Why not tested the way back how far you get if you drove sporty? ;)
you do realize the bentley holds about twice the fuel of a prius..
8:22 that was beautiful
So to see the difference, what was the fuel consumption during proper Bentley driving ?
Does anyone who can afford this car give a crap about mpg? Maybe, and only because you have to pump gas 50% less often, avoiding a pain in the arse. I never heard of "hypermiling", so I was expecting something else. Thankfully, you delivered it towards the end of the vid.
I completely agree with you.
You dont have to slam the doors like that (2:58), they are self closing!
these are 40k in the UK now. tempting
whats the song in the background called? please?
not sure you guys said, but it'd be useful to know the volumetric capacity of this car's fuel tank. a critical piece of info for a segment such as this.
is nYc premium is normally 93... sunoco is the only gas station in new york city that carry 91
idk, but I have always known that to get maximum "mileage" from a car you have to go 80 kmph in top gear (or close) but even on the road the speed limits almost never want you to go at that optimum speed, its almost always 60 or 110 kmph...
93 is from my part, but in other countries the ratings are different and a bit higher in performance
I thought you were going to waste that car on an economy run. Thank god for the last segment!
Next project: hypermiling a Lamborghini Aventador!
brand new car that paint color is special looks metalic
When the cylinder deactivation is active two cylinders are shut off in each bank of the V8, so it becomes a V4
My god this car is gorgeous!

One question: In the US is not illegal to drive a car without a number plate, in front?
you have the best job in the world....
Yes I did notice the ram
I wouldn't mind letting people know it's the V8 if I ever own one. In fact I want people to know because getting the V8 over the W12 means I'm a wiser man. Red badges are cool too.
yea, all those little kids trying to cross the street in that busy school zone
depends on the state
i think bentley should just drop the standard W12 designation and just have the V8 and the Speed model. insideline tested the V8 as having faster acceleration than the standard W12
that's the same V8 that's in the new Audi S6 right?
Did nobody else notice the SRT10 RAM truck go by at 2:40???
Ok, I'll forget for a moment that it's an extremely expensive car!
.
Moment's over.
It's not the MPGs at all that justify the price tag.
Our crib army is here SAAANNN
I wonder what the gas mileage was on the way back.
its all in how you drive your car my saab 9-3 gets 37 mpg's when im babying in on the interstate, but when im mashing the gas and having a bit of fun it can sink below the 20mpg mark
91 Octane "Premium"? Here in Australia our Premium unleaded is 98 octane and out base unleaded is 91.
US use (MON +RON)/2 number, most of the rest of the world use RON numbers only, which are typically 8 to 12 higher than MON for the same fuel. Which means that our numbers are about 6 higher than US for same fuel i.e. 97 fuel is 91 in us.
What? 91 octane is considered "premium" in the States? That's our "regular" in Aus. 98 is premium.
What color is this car?
What was highway ONLY consumption? My Lexus LS460 which is their biggest luxury 4.6L with an 8 speed, can hit 33 MPG on a smooth highway. Start and stop is atrocious mpg... but I can get 33 at 70mph. How about the Bentley?
Hal Hansen your Lexus dont have as large fuel tank.
Looks like Violette or Azure Purple (mine's Violette!)
such a nice car
What Does this car cost in the US?
US drivers definitely spend more time on the road and in their cars. In Europe, we rarely eat in cars and we don't drive around like in america. Gas is expensive in europe
My dad drives a Bentley and I like it
