      The side and back look good, but the front end of Bentley's has always looked hideous to me. Round headlights and a rectilinear grill shape can work together well, just look at a lot of mustangs. But it just doesn't work on this car. Something about a boxy, blocky grill with weird quad headlights just doesn't work for me.

    • @yammmit

      Kevin B I think it looks good.

    • @KB-bh9hp
      @KB-bh9hp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@yammmit I respect your opinion and I recognize that this grill and light appearance is a call back to older Bentleys and that's in part why it looks the way it does. But to me, rectilinear( straighter and somewhat boxier) shapes just clash with rounded shapes in product design. There are exceptions of course but that's just usually what I think.

    You have to admit, it's one hell of a beautiful car. I'd absolutely love to own a Continental above any other car out there, even a first gen GT. You also have to realize that Bentley, like Aston Martin and Ferrari, aren't forgetting their heritage or history - luxury and comfort before speed and noise. I cringe every time I see a Bentley in a rap music video, it's such a waste.

    Just over 600 horsepower from a twin turbo w12 from 11ish years ago. And now there’s the 1.6, 3 cylinder turbo gr corolla coming out making almost half the Bentley. Crazy the power from such small engines now

      @Xantiiiii1 ปีที่แล้ว

      They been able to do that from the 80s/90s with group B rally cars 600bhp in 1.8l
      Its a bentley so a little tuned 1.6 with the same power is never going to rival the smoothness of a V8 or V12 as power is besides the point.

    Love the Bentley Continental. I think its a gorgeous car. I must be getting old. I would rather drive that then a Bugatti Veyron. I know I'm insane.

    • @Stryke607
      @Stryke607 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      +William Smith You are not. The Veyron is a failed project, which is why VW dropped it. It's ugly as hell, the power output is pretty bad when compared to the engines dimensions, it is in fact less aerodynamic than most regular cars, and Bentley is losing around 5 Million Euro on every peace they sell, because it is just way too expensive to build and was too expensive to develop.
      The Bentley, on the other hand, is a VW Phaeton with an even bigger engine and a more beautiful design.
      I would definitely prefer it, too.

      +Stryke You said on you previous statement, "Veyron is a failed project that is why VW dropped it."
      I am asking when VW "dropped" it?

    • @Stryke607
      @Stryke607 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      jhay pena That's correct.
      They dropped it, because it is far to expensive (afair Bugatti actually loses around 5 Million Euro on every peace they sell), and it's just poorly engineered. It is less aerodynamic than a standard VW Golf, and even though it is fast, the engines displacement power is actually really bad. 1000HP sounds like a lot, but if you consider that it needs an 8l quad-turbo W16 engine for that, it's far from being impressive. (not even speaking about the fact, that it empties it's whole fuel tank in 15 minutes ... which is just stupid, even for a car like that.)
      On top of that, the car is heavier than most luxury limousines, which makes it really struggle in corners and at breaking. It isn't a sports car.
      It is desperately impractical as well, you really can't use it on a normal road ... which is the opposite of what most sports car manufacturers are aiming for.
      I guess, all of these problems had their part in VWs decision to drop the project and give it to Bugatti to do something with it, that would at least gain them some status.

    My friend had a DBS and now he has the Supersport and to be honest I think the Bentley is the better car. The DBS felt cheaper, slower and constantly had things going wrong, however it does sound better. But overall the SS is such a good all round car. The rear seats can be put back in on request, its quieter, more comfortable, better interior and materials and it is a lot faster, while still slightly cheaper.

    If I was Bentley, I would be really pissed off having a new car thrashed. I don't know why Clarkson has to cane the crap out of the car and destroy the cars tyres to prove the bloody obvious. The Bentley does not weigh the same as a Porsche 911. Bentleys have always been big, heavy luxury cars. The difference between a sports car and a luxo barge like the Bentley is that most (but not all) sports cars ride like icecream vans and are noisy with it. The Bentley is quiet and comfortable and generally not driven by cashed up yobs..

But Bentley never had chance to pass me lol. Still, a surprise seeing one on the really track =)

    6L Twin Turbo 12 cylinder engine and it only produces 620 hp?? Considering the price, the sporting intentions, and the weight the power is saddled with. That's pretty weak... I'm not an American car fan (more of a Japanese car guy), so I'm not trying to come to the defense of them here on a top gear vid.. But isn't Clarkson always bagging on the American cars for making so little power with their big engines.. And doesn't the Corvette ZR1 make 640 hp with it's 6L of boosted displacement?. 20 MORE than this overpriced VW.

      That's because even after all that Sport stuff added to it, Still is a Luxury coupe, it should be smooth, The Bugatti Veyron for example, is a 8.0 Lt W16 quad turbo engine, Quad! and ''only'' produces 1,000hp, while there's Nissan GT-Rs with V6 and ''only'' 2 turbos, putting out 2,000 hp, BUT! Bugatti's engine is more smooth, In the 2,000hp GT-Rs and LS engines you have the BRAPAPAPAPAPAPAAPAP idle and the ultra high RPM redline, but then in the bugatti you have the quiet idle, the Amazing smooth sound at 6k rpm.
      Big engines with high displacement and ''low'' power outputs are usually more quiet, easier to live with, more smooth, and reliable.
      Another example, taking it this time to everyday cars, The CrownVic/Marquis/Town Car, is a 4.6 lt V8 and only produces 210 hp, while the ''same'' engine in the Mustang could get up to 310. I ride in a Marquis everyday and damn that thing is smooth, Is like riding in you bed:)

      It's not signed for people who want to go fast, get insane track times, and stick your head in the engine bay tuning it up. It's designed for rich people who don't know what any of the specs of the car are, how its built, or how to tune it, rather they buy it for the looks, luxury interior, and the fact it can go fast at the same time.

    • @bliglum
      @bliglum 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Serenity "It's not signed for people who want to go fast" You know we're not talking about the standard Continental here right? This is the the one that's got "SUPERSPORTS" in the name!!
      And you're right, it's not about lap times, it's mostly about acceleration and power... Yet, it was a top shelf, fastest Bentley ever with a big, sophisticated, twin turbocharged V (or W) 12 with less power than a cheap little Corvette running a humble supercharged pushrod V8.

    Paddleshift gearboxes are a type of automatic gearbox. It operates exactly like an Automatic gearbox on the road, only there is a mode in which you can tell the car when to change gear by pushing the paddles behind the wheel. There is no clutch pedal. Once in Automatic mode the car shifts by itself. In short, if it has no clutch pedal, it's not a manual.

  • @dude2106
    @dude2106 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its not just a gimmick. There is a reason that Rolls, BMW 7 series etc. use V12 engines. Not because they are supposed to be fast race cars, but because its smooooooooooooth and it just delivers power relentlessly. It has massive torque and because its so smooth you never really feel that you are pushing the engine when going on the road. Even when you accelerate fast. That is what you want in a super luxury car. And that is what the W12 is build for.

One day I was flipping through channels and I saw three guys in some outlandish vehicles driving across a Syrian desert (season 15 Special ep.) and had to watch. Now I DVR the show whenever it's on. It's one of my favorite shows on TV. I even bought a notebook to jot down some of Jeremy's quotes like the one about the car's interior mentioned at the start of this clip.

    @NickDG14 More to the point, the Camaro is actually Australian underneath. It's not that America doesn't make good cars, we just don't make cars. The small Fords come from Mazda and Volvo and are built in Germany. What pisses me off is that when the Bugatti Veyron came out, everyone was focused on the top speed, thus the SSC Ultimate Aero. What no one understood is that the Bugatti was the fastest AND most luxurious car in the world, but SSC only went after the top speed...then lost again.
