A few years back I was with a friend at an LA Porsche dealer where he had purchased his car. Next door was a Bentley dealer. I was looking over their used cars and twiddling my thumbs. The salesman came out and said "jump in". It was a Continental gtc. He didn't even flash my license. Directed me on the freeway and told me to give it the beans. What an amazing car! When we got to the off-ramp he told me to "slam on the brakes with both feet at the stop sign, like somebody threw a baby in front of a car". I did so and the car came to a very composed halt. It was astounding. Never bought it and the salesman never cared. I think he just wanted to get out of the showroom. Great memory. Great car.

I'll have to be financially stable in every sense before purchasing my first supercar. The best thing to do with your money is to invest rightly because money left saving will end up with no returns.
No doubt being financially free and able to afford these luxuries cannot be overemphasized, making smart plans and setting up diversified investment portfolios is quite essential.
Most people miss it but the secret to retiring comfortably is finding a way to make returns while your money works for you. My Dad, as i remember started saving for retirement quite late but I know he was making more than 10k returns from his investments monthly and it was completely passive,

I just googled the man you mentioned, I am quite impressed with his credentials, will get in touch because I need all the help I can get, and consequently schedule a phone call. Thanks.
Sam, I had a phase 2 V8. Full disclosure I did not daily it but used it as a weekend car. I traded it in on a Ferrari which I love but I do miss the Bentley . All of the things you point out in the video-quality of the interior, ride, exhaust noise made it a fantastic car with a sense of occasion every time I drove it and I definitely would consider another one. I think you will find that if you stretched yourself into a higher mileage phase 2 that you would have few regrets especially if you can find an aftermarket warranty that covers the suspension, turbos and electronic bits. Also the v8 gets pretty good highway mileage compared to the w12
Sounds like you and I live in similar worlds. When I wanted a GT, I chose the AMG S63 Cab over the Bentley, but it was a really tough decision. I agree with all of your advice to Sam, except that he stretch his finances. I am 64 and have done very well, so I (probably like you) can stretch without risk. But Sam is relatively young, starting out with a family, probably a mortgage, etc. And his car collection is already amazing. So maybe as he inferred (and I would say) he is still young and could leave this for when he is actually a bit older - something to look forward to. A lot of my buddies drive Porsches (which I love, owned a bunch), but the Grand Tourer is more my speed now. I don't want to race anyone. But I do love an all wheel drive, 600hp/664 ft lb tq Grand Tourer that will waft almost silently down the road if you keep your foot out of it. But I'm 64.
If you saw the carwow video on the most expensive car to keep on the road . It’s that Conti GT. Had a friend who had one , cost 10/20k per year in repairs . So one to avoid
I had one and no they are not expensive to maintain. The secret is don’t buy parts from Bentley. All the parts are shared from VW group. Spend some time and cross reference part numbers. You can buy same part for very little money. I did most of the work myself and the car was very reliable. I sold the car in 2022 for a nice profit. Now I’m searching for a preowned 2020-2023.
Sam mate, we have a Panamera GTS Sport Turismo, it´s my wife´s every day driver. It has a V8 petrol, that we achieve around 20-21mpg in. We bought it for the same as this Bentley, 65.000 EUR with 40.000kms on it (2021 model year). It is the best car we´ve ever had. I´d definitely look into one of them, or even a 4S E-hybrid. Those are amazing too!
Before you spotted that Aston Martin in the carpark, I was thinking that you should consider a Rapide as a daily. It has four seats, it's practical and it will be a comfortable grand tourer, plus they are within budget (I think). Also, a later model DB9 could be a good comparison to the Bentley as well. Perhaps a Virage or DB9 GT is stretching it a bit (around 60k), but the clean elegant facelift design is gorgeous. Overall, the Bentley is a great car, but I think you'll get a more friendly smile from the public in an Aston. Another car to compare could also be the Maserati GranTurismo, as I'm sure you'll get full support from Vicki on that one!
Im so glad you did this. I was given a chance to buy a 2007 continental flying spur for £7999. It had one issue, it was a none starter - the starter motor had been diagnosed to be the issue. I still thought this would be a great bargain for a car I can use to comfortably cruise up to the football games on the weekend in. The excitement very shortly came to an end when I had quotes from £4,500 to as high as £8k for a starter motor change 😱 then I looked at the maintenance and common issues and it would probably be the best way to go bankrupt for a working class person like me. I know the cars not aimed at people like me but, a Bentley for £8k sounded great! My research and speaking to a couple of owners having brought the phase 1 w12’s have spent more than what they paid(£33k each) for the cars in their 5 year ownership. 😮
I have a phase 2 Continental GT V8 (twin turbo) here in Australia with 31,000 miles. Since the engine is really Audi, many of the parts of the car under the skin are Audi or even VW.The trick is knowing which ones. Any bespoke Bentley parts are expensive, especially here in Australia as they come from Crewe. But with a knowledgeable after market European car specialist, these cars are not too expensive to own and run. My service people use Liqui Moly oils and genuine VAG parts and the Continental is a happy car.
Huge fan of the Conti, would love to watch a whole series on these. And if something goes wrong you'll have content for the channel, and if everything's perfect you won't have huge bills - win win!
While at 58 i will never be in financial postion to own a £30k car, i would love to see you testing a rapide S, because i have always thought they seem a nice idea, V12 with 2 occasional rear seats and an aston badge for way cheaper than any FF
At around £15000 for a good running example and £25000 for an exeptional one I recommend the Bentley Mk.6. They are delightful to drive, you can maintain it yourself and 22 MPG is possible. It's also appreciating in value. Register it as a classic and it's Road Tax exempt, MOT exempt and ULEZ exempt. What more do you want. ? The hunt ball in the back seat perhaps.
What happened with your late Dad‘s Defender? Would be amazing if your make it your "classic project car" and restore it. A worthy family heirloom for the future generations!
I’ve got a BMW 540i and honestly I really want for nothing else. Comfy, rapid and can cruise forever! Highly recommend. I know it’s not super sexy but god damn it’s an all rounder to end all rounders!
Sam! Consider the A90 supra as the next daily. Essentially a BMW Coupe GT cruiser….with Japanese styling. I daily mine and it’s a dream. B58 Engine is one of BMWs best as you’ll know and the ride is extremely comfortable. No issues with speed bumps around London. Also get about 32+ MPG average. Boot is massive too + great sound system which I know is your thing. Worth considering!
Sam I am in the same boat! I really like both early and later cars until I went to view one... Tried to ignore the sweet smell of nappa hide and the condition as he started by showing me the history and the last invoice was for over £10k. £10K!! It needed starter motor (engine out), heat temp sensors, TPMS units, various sensors, 12 coils, 12 plugs, turbo gaskets, solenoids, lambda sensors and 46 (46!!) hours of labour. My heart got a kicking from my head and still sore about it.... Beautiful cars but they just need so much attention as the motors are crammed in with dreaded early 2000s VW tech. Oh before I go early cars need the vacuum hoses replaced as they go brittle after several years and Bentley decided to run them across the top of the transmission and that £25 part needs the engine out. It's really to ensure maximum revenue for Bentley dealers.... Let's cream every penny out of these rich folk! I'm thinking Lexus LC now as the shock pushed me in the opposite direction.
STG Has quickly become one of my favourite automotive channels Sam, love these Kind of shopping videos and wanna see more test drives hopefully! Love from, India
I feel your pain, I was very tempted with one. I decided on a 2012 Audi S8 with the same engine as the continental. Proper seats, faster, subtle, sleeper. Beware repair bills though, a fuel pump failed and, to replace the pair a mere £1500. They eat tyres, I don't dive hard and only expect 10k miles. However I do love it.
I think you passed the answer to your question whilst driving around the building, the RAPIDE! I have owned 2, one original, one S model. I currently own a DB11 Volante which I adore, but maintain that the Rapide is the best "Car" (not the best "Aston," that is..) they have produced. Trust me, a Rapide S would suit you to the ground 👍🏻
Sam, I would stretch the budget and buy the phase 2 Bentley GT you test drove...It will have a warranty and be fully checked over before you buy it... Interior was perfect and appeared to be a very well looked after car....go for it 😊😊
I love this my next daily series everytime it comes around. I can’t wait to see you buy a really perfect financial mistake like the rs6 in green and tan 🤣
I have had various Porsches (944, 968, 911 C4S Cab - yeah I´m old AF) I now drive a BMW 640d Cab get 800km+ from a single tank when going places, comfy, fast, economical, good looker, go GC if you need more room. Heated/ventilated/massage seats, B&O sound system, adaptive CC so for motorway driving look no further.
23:16 - thanks for that. I saw a Bentley phase 1 very clean looking ‘showroom fresh’ and he was driving with 1 headlight. I was thinking you own a Bentley replace the bulb. Now I know you need to take the bumper, front wings and doors off to replace the light unit. WTF 😳
Thanks for your charming content, Sam. And I owe you a couple hundred for the money I just saved having to pay a therapist. I looked at these and the AMG S63 Cabs and went with the Benz - it was a really tough choice - both amazing cars. As you said, it's a bloody Bentley. Soooo beautiful. But my biggest concern was the "tosser" issue. I do want to enjoy driving amazing cars, but I don't want anyone to ever think that I feel that I am better than them, or God-forbid, a snob. And ultimately, that's what pushed me to the Benz. Yes, it is just like the Bentley: over $200K new; incredible interior finish, ride and performance. But we see so many Benzes every day, that nobody really pays attention to them. Whereas, the Bentley gets noticed. Hell, I notice them. So, thank you again for this video. And in the end, you did drive away in a GT3, so all is good!
I got my 2004 W12 conti GT in 2021 for 17k. Was a well kept example with a few minor cosmetic issues but mechanically sound. I must admit keeping it perfect I have spent a total of 19k at a specialist and main dealer over 2 years of ownership, but some of the bills with these things can be a bit scary, especially with the W12 models.
As a family car that is super comfortable, I’ve been really happy with our Volvo XC90 hybrid Inscription Pro (has the air suspension) - for the money it’s just great.
Sam, go for a late Phase 1 model. I brought a GTC Speed with the W12 engine and it is an awesome drive. It is civilized, quiet (with its double glazed windows) and yet can still pull that 2 tonne machine to 60 in 4 seconds flat. The interior is the best place to be - no one does interiors better than Bentley. I have a Ferrari 612 as well and that is a totally different machine, much more of a driver’s car. The Bentley is not a sports car: it is a car to waft around whether at low speeds along the strip or across continents. Go for it!
This will be unpopular, but if your daily can be a little bit boring, give A6 Allroad a try. It’s very hard to find a more comfortable mile-eater for the money. And it’s a wagon!
Glorious review Sam! They are very tempting- 8years old well maintained, lots of VAG/Porsche parts under the hood - 12 month warranty so you can sleep easy?
As a potential alternative, Jaguar XJ V8 like what was on Top Gear in the race against god? Has basically everything that the Bentley has along with 2 extra doors and more spacious rear seats, you could get a great condition example too for that budget.
I tried to buy an S8 at Alexandra’s, they said we can’t let you see it because we are still prepping it, and we’ll call you back as soon as it’s ready. I never heard a thing , so went to Redline. Seems nothings changed !
Sam, how about a left field choice? A car that would fulfill the role of a comfortable, rear drive, petrol, spacious work car (tool for the job) you're budget would get you one of the best examples with up to 7 years warranty remaining as as it won't go wrong the money you'll save can go on the exotics. You could call the series "what's in a badge?" The car is a Kia Stinger 3.3 GTS!
Absolutely worth it! The fun memories it provides and the relationships you get to build with repair shops and your credit card company are priceless…😂 Seriously, though. Worth it.
You can have my old Flying Spur for £12K. 06 plated W12 92k miles with over £25k spent on it over the last 4 years. Loads of room for the accountant and the Kids!
Great video Sam, I feel your pain as I love the thought of an older Bentley but those costs are frightening if something let’s go. Oh well, what else is around.
If you are ok with something a bit older, but still very modern looking (in my opinion) while keeping a conservative budget, look for a nice SL 55 AMG from the early to the mid 2000's. 5.4L Supercharged V8, 500 HP, sounds phenomenal and the M113K is probably the most reliable V8 ever to come out of AMG. Sporty, elegant, hardtop convertible, it does all you need really!
Loving my GTC V8s - had it 5 years 20k miles no issues other then infotainment module crashed. Go for it you won’t regret it. I usually change my cars every year so testimony to this car I kept it so long. Btw I also had a CS in TDF, F Type R and have a 996 C4s and 599gtb - seems we have a very similar taste in car !
I went to by a very low mile phase 1 spur once , drove beautifully. Put it on the lift found oil coming from near the drivers side turbo 😢. I still think about that car
Love the GTC in Ice Blue metallic! The V8 Continental GT is the more agile sporty one.... But no, I remain very happy with my Ford S-max 200HP daily which is a sleeper GTi
Naim for Bentley is an unbelievably great hifi system and while very expensive if you like music then so worth having. Naim is a British hifi manufacturer that make what most would call high end hifi and if I was going to buy a Bentley it would be one option I would definitely want and would not purchase car without it.
I have gen 2 almost for 5 years, no big problems. Only one trunk hinge ca 300pound fix. Just oilchanges and filters. Soon plugs and gearbox fluid. Also one of my tpms is gone.
You could do a series where you go car shopping with a viewer that is looking to buy something interesting, your experience could make it quite interesting.
Even as a huge Car fan but not the most mechanical minded I know that white Bentley just looks an ever ending cash burn. I’m sure if it’s at Alexander’s its been checked over before they got it but even still. Bentley suggests plush and quality when it all works.
I'm actually looking at switching out my Panamera that I've had for 6.5 years to go back to a Continental GT or get a Rapide, and I noticed how the Rapide in the video caught your eye. I had a '07 GTC and then '04 GT before the Panamera.... when my son was on the way we decide we needed a 4-door for car seat purposes, he's almost 7 now. Which would you and you all prefer... a 2013 GT or a 2011 Rapide. We still need a good amount of space for luggage, but my son can get in and out of his car seat and the car by himself now, so 4-doors is no longer a must, but we can't have anything smaller than a Continental GT cargo wise. I like the Bentayga too but I'd want those to drop like another 10K so this is maybe a 2 year intermediate step but my Panamera is on it's last leg, lol.
a while back i bought a Bentley continental flying spur it had been a one owner from new seemed good but in 18 months of ownership it cost me £8000 in repairs!! i got rid, it does seem that one would expect a high quality build from Bentley but given my experience and the car you showed they are not well made. I have a BMW now totally trouble free and much better build quality
i have a long list of toys but love the Bentley C convertible been tempted for years.. but I went in the other direction at Christmas ... I bought a Plumbs and Custard 2cv and love it... nobody has keyed the sides parts all are available new and second hand. and 50 mpg will do 70mph well 80 ish actually will carry 5 dogs in the back and go to the tip with trailer and tow bar sun roof full length simple to maintain with suspension to die for it so soft... and put a smile on my face... and get signs of love>. My Merc C and my TVR and Brabus might be redundant... great fun x and almost impossible to steal.
You and I are always thinking of the same things. I need a motorway cruiser for the garage and I've been thinking about an old bentley too. I would also like an M5. You can get an F10 M5 for £18-22k. If I was spending 40k, I'd get the f10 generation of M5 which has Xdrive and fantastic self driving. The only thing is boot space. I don't have an SUV so I think S4 / RS4 would be wiser.
Honestly, In my opinion, if you plan to keep a Bentley like this for more than a couple of years, I'd really consider spending the extra $10,000-ish on one that you really like and is well maintained. If you bought a cheaper one, you'd most likely spend more in maintenance and spend more time noticing the flaws knowing you!
Sam if you want a comfortable little cruiser Alpine A110 have 0% finance. Super mpg and same daily as nick mason, Gordon Murray and James may. Less space but a comfortable sensible eco friendly little cruiser.
A few years back I was with a friend at an LA Porsche dealer where he had purchased his car. Next door was a Bentley dealer. I was looking over their used cars and twiddling my thumbs. RCF too, same great engine but about half the price used

Hope you decide quicker then Paul!!
STG Has quickly become one of my favourite automotive channels Sam, love these Kind of shopping videos and wanna see more test drives hopefully! Love from, India
I love Alexander’s!!! Always a treat!!
I have the same quandaries Sam, the difference being that I'm looking at used Fiestas and Fabias :D
Hmm I can't really explain why but in that space I prefer the Seat Ibiza, basically the same as the Škoda but a bit prettier
Sam, I would stretch the budget and buy the phase 2 Bentley GT you test drove...It will have a warranty and be fully checked over before you buy it...
Interior was perfect and appeared to be a very well looked after car....go for it 😊😊
Gen 2
For a daily - I have a Jaguar XJ 351R-Sport, its comfy, great ride, reliable (Jaguar main dealer) and looks great, but go for the car you want.
Buying a car is not the issue, it's the maintenance that costs the money, especially older high end cars.
Such a beautiful car, currently work at Bentley & have done for 22 years,2nd generation continental was truly a wonderful car ! # proud 😊
WTF 😳
Such a shame that British cars have absurd reliability issues cuz they're absolutely gorgeous vehicles.
are ranges/jaguar as bad? but to be honest they're not really british anymore now that its an audi product?
@@neo4102 wait what. Lol, Land Rover/jag are owned by tata which is Indian. But theyre still British brands.
Go for it!
This was the perfect video at the perfect time. Im in the market for a 2015+ Continental. Thank you for the information!
This will be unpopular, but if your daily can be a little bit boring, give A6 Allroad a try. It’s very hard to find a more comfortable mile-eater for the money. And it’s a wagon!
Love them but they have a bad reputation for reliability
@@theseb1979 volvo v60 crosscountry is much better
Glorious review Sam! They are very tempting- 8years old well maintained, lots of VAG/Porsche parts under the hood - 12 month warranty so you can sleep easy?
Have you ever considered a 2016+ Mercedes CLS 550 or 63? Looks, quality, reliability and add a Renn Tech tune.
GOOD NEW I JUST BOUGHT BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT PHAES 2 IT’S COMING OVER FROM UK TO LIVE IN SUNNY CYPRUS 👍👍
Skip to 3:00 for him to start talking about the Bentley.
Thanks. Couldn’t stand the yapping
Go for the Bentley Sam! It’s not the destination but the journey! It’s your journey we all tune in for and watch!
Couldn't agree more on the silver/chrome trim.
The more chrome a car has, the fundamentally uglier it is.
I’d really enjoy seeing more videos with this camera angle, I’m a big fan of
My new daily is an Alpina XB7, its perfect for a larger family
Loving my GTC V8s - had it 5 years 20k miles no issues other then infotainment module crashed. Go for it you won’t regret it. I usually change my cars every year so testimony to this car I kept it so long. Btw I also had a CS in TDF, F Type R and have a 996 C4s and 599gtb - seems we have a very similar taste in car !
You should go for a lexus lc500
It fits ur budget, reliable, sounds & looks amazing.
I am in the exact same position. Need a comfortable daily for around the same budget. Was only looking at used Bentleys yesterday 😂
Would like to see you drive a Cayenne Turbo GT.
That yellow MC20 is gorgeous.
Bang on about the craftsmanship & quality & in the next breath questioning the reliability & repair. Who buys the risk, second hand.
Sam, that white phase 2 was mint, love the black & white interior😍super low mileage too🤔surely worth considering😎
ive got a Bentley gt v8. I done pcv valve £1500, boot motor £700, coolant pumps £1500, battery £200, handbrake motors £500 each
I went to by a very low mile phase 1 spur once , drove beautifully. Put it on the lift found oil coming from near the drivers side turbo 😢. I still think about that car
Since the F Pace SVR is going back, why not try an XJR or an XJR 575? V8 power, comfort and plenty of space and RWD fun
You should reconsider the ALFA Stelvio! Drives like a sports car and you have space for the family
That’s a great suggestion.
For that kind of budget you’d probably be better off with a M340i or M340d for a daily.
Yep especially as a station wagon.
Great video I've been eyeing one as well. This has solidified my decisions as well
If you can stretch to it I think it's worth the extra £'s for the 2nd generation. Inside and out they look much more modern.
Sam! Jaguar XJR 5.0 V8 2016/17 and away you go!!
I’d suggest an LC500 or an M850i - both fit in your budget, coupe V8 GTs. Heard nothing but love for those cars
I love this type of content! Lovely raw reactions
Great! 👌👌
Panamera (ST), LC 500, M340i, Old C63 T, Arteon R SB, CLS 500 or 63 SB, 650i, 750i, 850i, S6, S7, S8
Why is almost everyone in the comments moaning about maintenance, personally I think if you love it and can afford it buy it.
I have a 996 turbo as a daily. It’s ace tuned to 500bhp and not so expensive I’m scared to park it’s up. I reckon that’s a good shout Sam
I have gen 2 almost for 5 years, no big problems. Only one trunk hinge ca 300pound fix. Just oilchanges and filters. Soon plugs and gearbox fluid. Also one of my tpms is gone.
My audi and other cars had been more expensive to maintain 😂
I fixed the hinge for 0£
You could do a series where you go car shopping with a viewer that is looking to buy something interesting, your experience could make it quite interesting.
I like how surprised Sam was when he realized the Bentley was a lovely car to drive! It's a boat but nevertheless a cool ride!
Even as a huge Car fan but not the most mechanical minded I know that white Bentley just looks an ever ending cash burn. I’m sure if it’s at Alexander’s its been checked over before they got it but even still. Bentley suggests plush and quality when it all works.
You can look at an Aston Martin V8/V12 Vantage ...... looks and drives fantastic
Have you thought about an Golf R, A35 AMG, Hyundai i30n, Civic Type R? All practical for the boring stuff, and can be lots of fun when in the mood.
I have a BMW now totally trouble free and much better build quality
you should get a phase two!!!!!!! im actually thinking about getting one next year thank you for this video
Buying a Bentley is like buying a yacht, its the cheapest part 😂
I love how Sam has basically a driving test to just get out of the lot lol. I do love this car.
And there is nothing cheap you could hit 😂
Bentley is a cool car.
Keep looking, something better will be out there that you haven’t considered.
Happy smiling Sam.
😎😎😎👍👍👍
i have a long list of toys but love the Bentley C convertible been tempted for years.. but I went in the other direction at Christmas ...
1st thing I noticed is your Beemer parked on a disabled spot, well done!
Brilliant video Sam 🔥🔥🔥
Honestly, In my opinion, if you plan to keep a Bentley like this for more than a couple of years, I'd really consider spending the extra $10,000-ish on one that you really like and is well maintained. If you bought a cheaper one, you'd most likely spend more in maintenance and spend more time noticing the flaws knowing you!
Sam if you want a comfortable little cruiser Alpine A110 have 0% finance. Super mpg and same daily as nick mason, Gordon Murray and James may. Less space but a comfortable sensible eco friendly little cruiser.
