Every nightmare like this starts the same. Like a normal dream. Then you start seeing monsters. People killing other people. Infrastructure collapsing. And then finally civilization coming to an end. Except then you realize that it's not a nightmare. That It's real. Then you wish it wasn't real and you want to go back to the way things were. I'm sure that's what it felt like for Joel.
Sad part is that those monsters are still conscious and they don't wanna eat or kill anyone. They are trapped and thats the worst fate anyone can have.
The moment the dog yelps and goes silent is so bone-chilling. A dog barking in the night is so commonplace you almost don’t register it at first on top of everything else happening, but when it just stops so suddenly…it makes you feel the same fear Sarah likely was.
Man, as much as I loved the how the show made this event far more intense, Sarah’s death hits way harder here for some reason. I think the more drawn out chase, showing how much shit Joel went through to keep her safe and how completely terrified she was just for her to be killed by a human, and not just that a solider who you’d think would be a protector. One of the saddest game deaths imo, I can’t imagine how much that would’ve hurt to have your daughter die in your arms
I think the soldier obviously not wanting to do it is a sad touch. He was just following orders, and even resisted them, but he probably wasn’t met with kindness for resisting orders.
It's also Troy Baker's performance, Pedro Pascal is freaking killing it as Joel but especially in this moment, Troy Baker is peerless. the heartbreak he conveys is tangible.
I agree. Doesn’t matter how many times I’ve played the game, Sarah’s death will always make me tear up. The show is of course objectively equally sad and the actors are great, but it just doesn’t hit the same way for me emotionally. I was missing Joel’s constant reassurances and promising Sarah that she’s safe and he’ll get her out of it etc; I totally get the pacing is different in a show than a game but I think this is the one scene where it would’ve benefited from portraying it more gameplay style. It makes it so much more devastating when it happens.
The game shows you how close joel to sarah is, then it make us help joel save sarah from danger, it shows us how situations turn from bad to worse (car destroyed, sarah got injured, separated from tommy who have a gun) and when we tought everything is safe... Bam!!!

The deaf tone Sarah expresses herself with when she is in the car is heartbreaking. You can sense her shock and her fear settling in. Poor little girl!

I love seeing the NPC’s getting assaulted and devoured by the infected. Best part is when the guy gets to scream about traffic being held up, he gets attacked, and then another infected barrels into the car to attack the other person, super claustrophobic, no escape.
Am I the only one who mapped out the road signs to see where exactly they were? The signs don't actually work. There is no I35 exit 15. Exit 13 is all the way down south near the Gulf. San Marcos at 35 miles, San Antonio at 91 miles, and Pleasant Valley at 8 miles come close to meeting up north of Austin.
One of Joel’s neighbors further down the street, That kid and his parents in their driveway packing up their car and getting to leave and I really hope they made it safely and they survived reminded me of Henry and his parents on outbreak day, Henry was only 5-6ish when it happened

It definitely doesn’t seem worth $70, there really weren’t drastic differences to justify the price, maybe if it were $50 I’d consider it, but after playing the trial, it’s definitely not worth it
The military shouldn’t be in this stage for a shoot to kill type scenario, they said the virus is brand new. Unless this is like the Left 4 Dead scenario where the military indeed shoot civilians, but even that was late in the infection. Correct me if I am in anyway wrong on the Last Of Us Lore
They didn't know how the virus spread at this point and presumably they had been warned about asymptomatic or slow-turning victims so it's no wonder they were a bit trigger-happy. Something similar happened in The Walking Dead, you see soldiers shooting patients and medical personnel in the hospital where Rick is comatose because they're not sure how it spreads.

The rest of the movie/game/etc. shows what happens after what's left of humanity has had time to (sort of) process their situation and begin adapting to it. Hence why "The Last of Us" puts increasing focus on the human antagonists over the Infected; by the time of the games proper, what's left of humankind has had twenty-plus years to get used to the Infected and how they function. They know how to stay safe (for the most part) and manage the fungal threat...but other, non-infected humans aren't so easy to predict.

The danger is obvious, so the restrictions would be accepted by the vast majority as necessary. That's what happened with covid-19; it was only the least respectable elements of society that fought against the restrictions. If something like this were to occur, I think that there would be gratitude and respect for the security forces, not grumbling about nazis or whatever. Yet this scenario seems to paint the government forces as immediately the villains; brutal, corrupt and uncaring. Only interested in maintaining their unilateral authority. It makes for a great story, but it strikes me as a bit off in an otherwise very well done scenario.

It's likely that the military's security measures were accepted for some time, save for some non-compliants (who may have lost people important to them to the crackdown). But as the years went on and supplies began running low, the military probably had to increase their restrictions; some of them may have also become corrupt and started outright abusing the civilians in their jurisdictions (as hinted with the Kansas City QZ in the TV series). It's like Marlene herself says in her broadcast; when you're lost in the darkness, look for the light. The Fireflies probably built up a power base in one or two QZs where the populace was really getting sick of the military's restrictions; after they deposed them and took over, they were able to start calling to others around the country, inspiring the downtrodden and despairing to join them with the promise of "fixing" the world. When you're desperate enough, you can be pushed to do crazy things, after all...and society has had 20 years to decay by the time of the game proper.
Joel should've let Sara sacrifice herself to stop the outbreak. He only wanted to save her to be selfish. Think about all the infections that were stopped by killing Sara. It was for the greater good. Would you doom all those people by saving YOUR daughter, hmmm? :^) The game tries SO HARD to make the gov Purge killing Sara and the Fireflies killing Ellie THE SAME THING... and it still flies over people's heads... That is to say; killing people "for the greater good" is completely pointless, useless, and evil. The whole story comes full circle to beat this into your head. But people still don't get it.
It’s meant to be unnecessary.. he survived all that - just for a *HUMAN* to be the one who killed his daughter so he becomes cynical and shuts himself off… the TV show didn’t emphasise that he’d been through hell as much as the game did.. in the game he sees gas stations exploded, police get overrun and carries Sarah through it all.. in the show he gets chased by one zombie and then gets saved by the soldier.
The game is way better than the HBO show. The actress playing Sarah was too old. And her and Pedro had no chemistry. It's a good show...just not close to the game.
A lot of the dynamic was taken away. Joel was in his 30’s rather than his late 20’s. It took away the “young father but made it work” aspect. Also, HBO Sarah fixed the old watch while game Sarah bought a brand new one. The idea that the watch was new gave it a “parting gift” feeling that was taken away with the old watch being fixed.
The show is very uneven. Some eps are masterpieces, some are just shite. Re-casting Sarah was a big mistake. Making Bill's town a Hallmark Romance movie was another colossal f-up. Other eps were good though.
I know. It just doesn’t feel right. HBO Sarah wasn’t Sarah. We didn’t get to see Bill, the “paranoid schizophrenic” and his infested town. The bond between Sam and Ellie was different because of the decision to age Sam down and make him deaf. The speaking made their final conversation so important, and the point of Sam being close to Ellie’s age was so he could finally have a friend his age and feel like a kid. Also, HBO Henry had crayons. CRAYONS! In the game, Sam wanted an action figure, but Henry said no because they “only take what’s important, nothing more.” Even the toy was important. Ellie secretly took it to give to Sam, but Sam didn’t accept it because he knew his childhood would end by the next morning. And most importantly, Sam keeping the bite a secret. HBO Sam showed it to Ellie, and they just had her rub her blood on the wound to stop the infection. The reason he kept the bite a secret was so he could get an honest answer from Ellie about what happens after you turn, to find some sort of reassurance that even after he turned, he wouldn’t feel anything. And don’t get me started on Henry’s underwhelming reaction to Sam turning.

It’s meant to be unnecessary.. he survived all that - just for a *HUMAN* to be the one who killed his daughter so he becomes cynical and shuts himself off… the TV show didn’t emphasise that he’d been through hell as much as the game did.. in the game he sees gas stations exploded, police get overrun and carries Sarah through it all.. in the show he gets chased by one zombie and then gets saved by the soldier.

The game is way better than the HBO show. The actress playing Sarah was too old. And her and Pedro had no chemistry. It's a good show...just not close to the game.
A lot of the dynamic was taken away. Joel was in his 30’s rather than his late 20’s. It took away the “young father but made it work” aspect. Also, HBO Sarah fixed the old watch while game Sarah bought a brand new one. The idea that the watch was new gave it a “parting gift” feeling that was taken away with the old watch being fixed.

The show is very uneven. Some eps are masterpieces, some are just shite. Re-casting Sarah was a big mistake. Making Bill's town a Hallmark Romance movie was another colossal f-up. Other eps were good though.
I know. It just doesn’t feel right. HBO Sarah wasn’t Sarah. We didn’t get to see Bill, the “paranoid schizophrenic” and his infested town. The bond between Sam and Ellie was different because of the decision to age Sam down and make him deaf. The speaking made their final conversation so important, and the point of Sam being close to Ellie’s age was so he could finally have a friend his age and feel like a kid. Also, HBO Henry had crayons. CRAYONS! In the game, Sam wanted an action figure, but Henry said no because they “only take what’s important, nothing more.” Even the toy was important. Ellie secretly took it to give to Sam, but Sam didn’t accept it because he knew his childhood would end by the next morning. And most importantly, Sam keeping the bite a secret. HBO Sam showed it to Ellie, and they just had her rub her blood on the wound to stop the infection. The reason he kept the bite a secret was so he could get an honest answer from Ellie about what happens after you turn, to find some sort of reassurance that even after he turned, he wouldn’t feel anything. And don’t get me started on Henry’s underwhelming reaction to Sam turning.
