I am happy you found this song. When we feel attacked for being true to who we are, it hurts. Stay strong and know there are other's like yourself. You are not alone. The loser's are the ones who refuse to accept you. Not you
don mclean, my favorite artist, is more than just american pie. crossroads is seriously one of my favorite songs ever. more than i’ve seen in music today, or even from the 70’s, he’s written genius pieces of art. INCREDIBLY UNDERAPPRRCIATED AND UNRECOGNIZED. if you want to get to know him more from music like the incredible song above, start with the album “American Pie” then maybe “Tapestry” and “Believers”. you can’t help but fall in love with his work. his personal life...that’s another story.
I found this song on an LP in 1977. I bought it for American Pie. But I fell in love with this song when I first heard it as a 16 yo. I was too young to understand the lyrics but I connected with the melody. I rediscovered this song when I played it on my iPod last week. "No matter what I may have planned." Profound and brilliant.
I've loved this song for a long time - and I'm older than dirt, so I've loved it a really long time ;-) In addition to the amazing lyrics, I love the surprise chord played on piano just as Don sings "planned" for the last time (this occurs at 3:19, back it up to 3:10 to get the context). This chord brilliantly emotes in us a feeling of the unexpected. Our ears wanted to hear a more settled final chord, and we were expecting that nice, comfy final tonic chord. But life has its own surprises. The chord takes us on a tack that is not what our mind planned - which mirrors one of the song's core ideas: we travel roads we never expected to walk down. We hear chords we never expected to hear. No matter what we may have planned.
What an amazing analysis! I'm glad you took the time to articulate it here. 😊 I'm not finished listening, but I look forward to seeing what you mean when I reach 3:19
@@chrisharro I don't know that song. I will have to make its acquaintance. To me, at least, Crossroads is McLean's life struggle and reaching out to a higher power. Perhaps my interp of the lyrics is all wrong. Thanks.
I wrote the song, I sang with you, I spoke with you, I am complete with you - and all of them listening or listened to this poetry - I am one with them!
This song is about Self discovery - acceptance of the self. No one knows what I got (all tied up on the inside) Kept moving forward & thought he went the wrong direction. He went within & saw both sides of himself & asked - can you find my pain, can you heal it? He noticed that the pain was coming from the darkness in his soul. Then goes on to say -All roads lead to where we stand. We have walked them all - no matter what we have planned. Here he now knows that the love & pain have walked together. Through integration of himself - he can become whole.
Exactly, just because it has a religious sound, it's not a religious song. It's about examining your life, the choices you made, the chances you did or didn't take. It's about accepting who you are.
This song saved my life way back when I was dealing with being gay. Then it wasn't bullying! It was shame & guilt... Love you, DMcL. Thanks,

it is a prayer
To me, one of the most beautiful love songs ever!
I’ve never heard a song that sounded more like a prayer
Because it is. He is reaching out to Christ to be redeemed. That's how I see it.

To me, this is one of the best songs of a man seeking redemption, help, and guidance from Christ. Beautiful.
I know where you're coming from, but given Don McLean's songs like, Falling Through Time, I'm not sure he would agree with you!

@@edwardbyrne4109 Agreed.
Life is a long and hard journey full of pain and very precious few moments of happiness which make the journey worthwhile.

I never thought you could have known
You have to have a lot of insight to write such lyrics.
