I could play this for my 98 year old mother but it would make her heart break even more. She has some dementia now, and although Dad still lives with her, she sees him as “some nice man” who comes over to take care of her. As I was snuggling with her one night before she went to sleep, she was crying and wondering why Bill, the man she has loved for 70 years, left without saying goodbye.

Since I wrote my previous comment, they have transferred to an assisted living facility. Dad broke his back during a fall last October, yet he puts aside his own pain to make sure that Mama has everything she needs. Dementia doesn’t get better. Our whole family: their four children, fifteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren have an overwhelming sense gratitude for what he has taught us all these years without saying a word.
Stay strong and have empathy for her as I am sure you do. It isn't her fault and your father sounds like a rock of a man we should all strive to be. Bless you all.

This album at that time was unavailable, I continued my search and eventually got a 6 CD book which included this wonderful song. I didn't have the internet then, neither was TH-cam around. How apropos. My husband always loved Neil Diamond's music and I found this song quite by accident. I buried my husband last week. We married, after knowing each other for 5 weeks, and celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary earlier this year (before he passed). This truly could be the story of my life and somehow it just doesn't seem right that I am left here without him. It wasn't suppose to be that way. . .

It's no wonder that Neil has been considered one of the greatest live performers for 50+ years now. He delivers that same passion in concert, as though he is singing just for you. Saw him and his extraordinary band in Toronto back in '87. Still one of the best live shows I've ever seen...and I've seen a lot of the major superstars.
