I just watched Don play this evening at Sheffield City Hall. Tears rolled down my face as he played. He acknowledged it was his final tour and this song means a lot to me and to everyone I believe.
Wow lucky you. 😊 I forgot just how magnificent this song is. I was addicted to it in the late 70s n 80s and it sort of passed me by. So glad to have rekindled this fond ballad of truth and self reflection. cheers Tom 👍
My father has passed and he showed me this song as a young child, so this being uploaded by me years ago really hits home when I get new notifications. Bless you all, I hope you all find a deep meaning in this song as much as I did. Thank you.
Thanks for the upload. We played Crossroads at the start of my father's funeral service. Dad was a huge Don McLean fan and always went to his concerts when McLean came to Australia.
Don McLean is a musical , lyrical and poetic genius . The words and notes tug every heart string . His songbooks are an emotional rollercoaster . Adore him . Xx
The love of my life and I got together the 4th of July weekend 1978. She had the album but had only listened to American Pie and Vincent. We spent the weekend making love and listening to the entire album. Winterwood became her favorite. Crossroads and Everybody Loves Me are mine.
I saw Don in concert locally way back in the 70s. The memory finally inspired me to tackle this wonderful and inspiring song. It's here: th-cam.com/video/-2ZXfDe69X4/w-d-xo.html DL, Staffordshire, UK.
@@sharrongodfrey8141 Obviously you have good taste in music. My favourite tracks; Crossroads, Winterwood, Empty Chairs. And of course Vincent. My take on it is Here: th-cam.com/video/iIKF7aCfyAc/w-d-xo.html 🙂
this is such a beautifully written song, how could anyone ever write a masterpiece like this,? its really hits my heart, wow, how piano and words can make emotions run so high, x
Some of his early stuff was simply stunning! This has to be one of his best. The lyrics are so moving and brought to life by such beautiful music, I never tire of hearing this! Saw Don the last time he came to Birmingham, going again on May 16th, can't wait!
Carolyn Hall Was at that concert too. Carolyn. I thought he was very relaxed and amiable this time round. Although he didn`t sing this song in May it was altogether a much better concert than 2 years ago. I went to both with four of my children (one couldn`t make `cos he lives the other side of the world! ) They were brought up listening to Don and still appreciate his music. Linda
So many good people love this song. I have nothing to add except that this song healed something that was nagging my heart. Thank you, DM, your beautiful song helped me find my own answers.
It's been awhile since I've uploaded this but thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts and dreams on this video. As the years pass on, the meaning behind this grows so thick. I'm glad I have this song to look back on time & time again. Bless.
I'm happy to have it now as I approach my 70s. So many more roads have been walked since I was 22 and heard this for the first time. Births, deaths, marriage, divorce, remarriage to the right one, loss of loved ones. So many pains lifted and peace restored. Still life is a mystery but a joy to travel on those roads of life.
This is up there with one of my very favourite songs ever. It's just so moving. From the lush piano chords to the lyrics. Don McLean is a master at getting To people's souls through his lyrics & music that's universal to Human feelings.
My 14 year old daughter recently passed through our front living room as i was playing this song again and just said the words.."DON McLEAN, EMPTY CHAIRS...love you dad!!".....and waltzed off into the kitchen. I CRIED........my life is complete...i know she'll be ok now because............................................................................................... "she'll remember me, when listening to this song, in the future when i'm gone......THANK YOU DON".
This goes out to my Dear childhood friend a friend for life who sadly passed away far to young. We listened to this song many of drunken nights plus many others. But this song in particular was so special. Always in my thoughts. Miss you James. Forever young. xx
Hello 👋 diamond How’re you doing. Thanks for this comment, I'm nothing without fans like you who appreciate my musical craftiness It's nice meeting you here.
This song makes me cry and die. I know it since I was 14. That's 20 years ago from now, even by then the song was old. The lyrics always touched me so very deep inside. I'm gonna cover it on the piano and sing it to an old friend of mine. Because the lyrical I, that's just him. He's so sad a person. Always finds reasons to hate himself. Always looks for them. I guess some people are just made for living as a personification of agony and suffering. I'll always hate and love you for that, my friend. Ten years, we made music for other people and ourselves. What great a time. Everybody loved us making music. Guitar + piano + two harmonizing voices, so very young those times back in the days.
That was me in my 20s. I tried so hard to be perfect and could never excuse (or forgive) my many faults. I ended up driving my first wife away. That seemed to wake me up to the realization that I'm not meant to be perfect, accepted my imperfections and worked on improving those things that I could.
you just put into words what ive been thinking/and struggling with my whole life, this song is just so beautiful, to know there are people that can relate to how i feel... you give me hope i thankyou
Although this is not from my generation, it just puts it all in perspective. It does not matter when or who, good music and emotion know no time and place...
Some how I seem to end up listening to Don McLean songs at lowest points in my life and he always has the right one for each occasion. I just love the poetry in his lyrics. Always touches my soul
It's a down to earth song. The lyrics project true life & love. The melody is soft and cool. The voice touches everyone's feeling. Thnk you! Don McLean
Beautiful song! thank you for the lyrics. Being able to read them and hear the beautiful music at the same time helps me understand it so much more. Thank you!

Can you still feel it? Can you find my pain? Can you heal it? hershenso Yep. I remember being about 13 years old and not understanding growing up or depression or anything I was going through... I heard this song and cried and cried and cried.
I've enjoyed Don McLean's music since i was a teenager in the 70s. But i never heard this song until yesterday. I typically listen to the words of a song imagining myself as the speaker. But, about halfway through this one, i realized it was the words of my wife who has severe Alzheimer's and has not spoken for over 3 years. Some how, Don McLean wrote a song giving voice to every victim of Alzheimer's who wants to speak again to the person they love. I cannot listen to this song without crying and hearing my wife's sweet voice reassure me that we are walking all our roads together even though I can't heal her pain. Thank You Don McLean.
This song brought some respite to my soul, as my wife’s journey through Alzheimer’s disease progressed to the end. I needed all the help I could get to survive myself😢 I miss her ❤
Wow. Definitely never heard that and I am sure I listened to the vinyl many times. This song to me is sooo beautiful and profound and wonderful and intimate.
Awe. I love this man. Absolutely awesome song. He is without a doubt the best singer/songwriter ever. I wished I had met him before he got married. Lol.

Quite possibly one of the greatest songs ever written. Right up there with Lennon’s Imagine.
The Words are so profound & the music just touches the Soul.
Truly beautiful.
What an Amazing talented Singer Songwriter this Man is.
Love it.
Indeed they are....
The body of work that is the original American Pie album, is one of the finest works of art of the 20th century. Don McLean a true master.
He’s one of the greatest lyricists to have ever written music.
Certainly my favourite.
Totally agree. His best --- OUR best!

A wonderful song, beautifully sung, but respect, too, for the pianist, Warren Bernhardt, never overplaying his welcome.
Nicely worded sentiment
Bought this album in 1981, still listen to every single song over and over, the man is and always will be a genius.

Pure brilliance. Under-appreciated artist of the highest order.
I had completely forgotten this song! Wow, the memories it brings!
Is your name really Butt ?
Art at it's finest.
I've got nothing on my mind
Nothing to remember
Nothing to forget
And I've got nothing to regret
But I'm all tied up on the inside
No one knows quite what I've got
And I know that on the outside
What I used to be
I'm not
Anymore
You know I've heard about people like me
But I never made the connection
They walk one road to set them free
And find they've gone the wrong direction
But there's no need for turning back
'Cause all roads lead to where I stand
And I believe I'll walk them all
No matter what I may have planned
Can you remember who I was?
Can you still feel it?
Can you find my pain?
Can you heal it?
Then lay your hands upon me now
And cast this darkness from my soul
You alone can light my way
You alone can make me whole
Once again
We've walked both sides of every street
Through all kinds of windy weather
But that was never our defeat
As long as we could walk together
So there's no need for turning back
'Cause all roads lead to where we stand
And I believe we'll walk them all
No matter what we may have planned
An intelligent, moving and beautiful song, perfectly sung and played.
This song and Empty Chair both by Don Mclean tell my story.
