- When Midnite Vultures was released at the tail end of 1999, fans and critics were confused whether the album was serious or a farce-was it a genuinely immersive genre exercise, or just an elaborate hipster joke? Either way, Beck managed to turn his idea of dumb sounds and dumb songs into a classic album.

Seeing a Liner Notes on this album instead of Odelay or even Sea Change is a surprising pick, but an enjoyable one as this album still doesn't often get the respect it deserves. Hollywood Freaks is an all time great Beck song.

Thank god this album is getting the recognition it deserves! Its atmosphere creates its own little world and I have so many great memories riding around with my friends bumping this one.

These liner notes are great. A1 job on producing these. With liner notes being dead on arrival with online downloads the video liner notes bring new life to many records, hopefully exposing the material to a new set of fans

One Foot in the Grave and Mutations are much stronger I think but I do think Midnite Vultures is underrated.
@@matthewsutton3682 to those of us who came to associate beck with sheer fun by way of intense musicality those albums were weak. I saw one foot as an rough demo by some stoned kid yet to find his feet mutations was incredible though; there was a serious side that considered it and sea change the best here m he was though busting out like some retro all American boy making a mockery of the climate he was borne into whilst only doing it better. It was spectacular and for a few years in his prime one of the smartest whist most entertaining pop star of all time that went over the mainstreams heads

Yes, great choice. Such an underrated album even when it's one of the most popular (at least back then). Love all that party atmosphere it has and especially the fact he's kind of mocking the sexiness on the media in most of the songs, a real genius

"dumb lyrics"? Yeah, throughout, but there's some real clever moments throughout too. The genius of it all is in the ambiguity. Is it lampooning? Being serious? Is it lauding the genres it emulates, and the themes of hedonistic excess, or is it criticizing? Regardless, Midnite Vultures is catchy, fun, clever, and yet somehow very approachable. The album is amazing start to finish and surprisingly easy to listen and re-listen to, at least for me.
That was beck’s peak. And peak fun far as I’ve heard in music the band was in their prime, the greatest popstar on the planet at that moment putting on the best show by way of parodying that very scene. The stage production was fantastic far as acknowledgement however he was still alternative so the people in general didn’t recognise it whilst the industry didn’t know how to handle it.

Endtroducing.......
These need to be at least twice as long if they want to say anything meaningful. They're all well edited, factually accurate, and cover interesting albums, but I'm always left wondering why I bothered watching. Pitchfork is capable of saying meaningful things about music, they just don't give themselves enough time to do it here.
