You can thank the Dust Brothers. The producers behind the Beastie Boy’s “Paul’s Boutique”. I’m pretty amazed at the amount of samples on this.

It’s amazing how all the songs he made from the samples are better than the songs he sampled from.

Thank you so much for this. For almost 30yrs now I have been trying to hear 'I walk on guilded splinters' in Beck's Loser; all this time I thought there was supposed to be a Dr. John sample, but now I realize he uses a drum track from another cover of that song. Aaaaah ooohh. Another exiting story to tell at the next party with old friends! :D
BTW: I am not entirely sure if all of the samples were actually used as a sample by Beck. I have the impression that a part of them actually have been replayed on the album (and most certainly when played live) but maybe I am wrong. There were many eye openers there, many songs that I know the originals (e.g Jacques Brel) but never ever recognized them. Brilliant! Thanks again.

Paul Weller (from The Jam) also did his own mash up of 'Walk on Guilded Splinters' in 1995 👌😸

Woaw ! How did he get away with this ? Some artists lose all their royalties on a track for just one sample, he uses so many per track. So much stuff I thought were clever arrangements were just samples (provided by the Dust brothers on top of it)

@@robroufla Cool. well it got me looking into it some more. It turned up some interesting info about the subject. In 91 there were cases regarding sampling in music and that 'any amount' of sampling from other's material and used 'for profit' must obtain permission from the owner/publisher first. All of this was going on at a time when Beck was producing music. So, it either must have been unsettled at the time, or he had Label/Contract support to obtain the proper permission. Perhaps his family knew how to navigate the grey areas? Honestly, this would make an interesting documentary on how this all played out at the time.
