Badass tune, It's like I got the motor out of the Lexus GS 350 now 😂
I bought a 2023 sr5 v6 4x4 with 7 miles on it expecting to experience gear hunting and throttle lag. I decided to wait until after the first oil change to make any changes. Since the truck has broken in, I haven’t noticed a bit of gear hunting, and have gotten used to making bigger changes in throttle input and using a larger range of the throttle’s travel. I use the etc button every once in a while on really steep hills to keep the revs up, but otherwise all miles have been in regular drive mode. For those of you with brand new 3rd gens, I’d wait until you get at least 1500 miles in regular drive mode before you make any changes.
How's the tune holding up? I'm wondering if it improves the gear hunting with cruise control, can't stand it dropping a gear with the slight inclines on the thruways around WNY lol
Love the OTT tune. I flash myself with their files. John made me a premium fuel only tune and I'm very happy with it. Currently running the medium/spicy variant.
@@westcoasttaco The only added weight I have at the moment is the factory tri-fold cover and bed mat. I like it. It definitely has more punch to it and you do notice a difference. I do put the mild/medium on the truck before it goes into the dealer for oil changes (only a year old, so I'm letting them do the free oil changes right now). The time I didn't change it back to mild/medium one of the techs took it and chirped the tires as he took off. The service manager chuckled at that and asked me what tune I was running. He has a Pro and we ended up comparing which tunes and settings we were using.

I know the primary reason for these tunes was the automatic transmission shifting issues, but what about those of us with manual transmissions. The laggy hesitation and flat spots are still a problem for us to.
thanks for the info, I also have been thinking getting this tune but was concerned with warranty or engine long term effect. you cleared a lot up for me. thanks and nice taco.
My pleasure man! If you’re curious about what a former Toyota Master Tech has to say about tunes, check out 32:00: th-cam.com/video/oPHNLLP6z88/w-d-xo.html
I know it’s to fix the gear hunting and some better low RPM torque but I’ve heard of tuning getting around 20 extra horsepower on average. I’d like to be around that 300 hp number I don’t feel like that’s unreasonable for a tune but I haven’t seen many dyno graphs for the OTT. Some people have shown KDMAX tunes that have around 20hp increase but I just want to know that the OTT tune is similar. People act like it’s better than the KD but to justify the money I want to know I’m getting a little power boost. One of the only things I can do unless I get a supercharger 😂
Does the OTT allow the engine/transmission to downshift sooner than factory? Very hilly where i am with a lot of up and down. The gear hunting is really annoying and i find my self using the ECT button and the shift mode gear up and gear down to try and manage the transmission response. Gearing down is an important factor i am looking for in the tune. Great video BTW
It does, it allows the truck to shift up and down when it should versus what the factory setting has set, when rolled off the assembly line. The shifting all around is smoother, quicker and methodically mapped. Appreciate the feedback👍🏼🤙🏼!
I had my 2017 SR 2.7 liter 4 cylinder about a month ago flashed with the new file and am completely satisfied with it. It makes me think that there is a V6 in it. It is an excellent modification to your Tacoma it should be your first upgrade.
1. ECT Power mode will work for the meantime. 2. 4 cylinders make me cry. If you have a V6, you REALLY need a Magnuson supercharger. 9k and you'll be set.
Thanks! The biggest reason why Toyota has the vehicles tuned the way they do, is because of emissions.. even if the truck or vehicle doesn’t run as good, they have to adhere by regulations and by going for the best emissions rating they can possibly obtain.. it’s sad to see how much control the government has on even how vehicle manufacturers can make and engineer vehicles.. but that’s the honest answer as to why this is the way it is.. Hope that helps!
I was scrolling through the comments and read that the Ott tune increased your miles until empty by 70 miles. I have an 23 OR that says 310 miles until empty after full tank so when i get the tune will that increase to 380 range until empty?
So that was one of the benefits I have noticed since getting the tune and after a few gas tanks have been cycled through. Not sure if everyone will have the same results?? But I was averaging about 309 miles on a full tank and I am now around 370..
I have a 2019 gen 3 trd off road 3.5 tacoma with a manual transmission. I have about 16900 miles on it currently and have made some modifications like a afe cold air intake and a awe dual exhaust. I was basically just trying to give the tacoma a little more pep in its step. The manual was absolutely a must for me after driving the automatic, but it still feels like it's being manipulated. Does the tune on a manual transmission actually make a difference, especially on the low-end torque side of things. I currently hit the 3300-3500 rpm power oomph and would like to see if that could be better distributed into the lower gears. Low end grunt is what I'm looking to gain. I get that it's a truck, not a race car. I would just like a little better throttle response on both up revs and down revs. The current drive-by wire throttle setup just seems enimeic at best. Truthfully, is this actually going to make a difference in a manual tacoma, or is it just a butt dyno feel good good purchase?
21 Sport MT here. With the stock tune, the throttle lag makes in hard to do any fancy footwork like double-clutching or even a normal rev match because you have to stomp on the gas and wait. And the knocking/pinging/banging at low-mid rpm makes me cringe. Sounds like this tune might address the throttle pedal lag. Does it also fix the knocking running 87?
The tune will adjust to whatever octane you run. I personally run premium and my truck runs so much better.. here’s a video I did with a manual transmission:Tune A Tacoma With A Manual Transmission? - All Hype or A Must Have??? th-cam.com/video/1Cki22DsAQo/w-d-xo.html
I was debating between a 5.29 regear or OTT for my 17 OR until it was totaled a few months ago. Waiting on the 23 OR I ordered a couple months ago. Definitely gonna get the OTT once I can.
Man!! My truck getting hit or totaled is like my worst nightmare 😬.. glad you were at least able to get a new one before production stopped!! You will love the tune👍🏼
I would love to have seen the mpg screen on the consul, but I am baffled by the mileage you’re getting I have a stock Trd off-road 4x4 and my distance to empty is as you said always about 305 to 310 after a fill up and I usually average 18 mpg on the tank. My concern with the tune is that it changes Toyotas variable valve, timing. And the tune pushes more torque and horsepower at lower RPMs. And for whatever reason, Toyota seems to not want that engine pushed hard at lower rpm not sure why.
Regarding the variable valve timing.. it is true that Toyota does seem to have a habit of not wanting the engines to get pushed harder at lower RPMs.. but I can’t help but wonder if this has to do something with the emissions and fuel economy.. the guys that have developed these “aftermarket” tunes spent quite a bit of time researching and developing this software. There’s also a lot of people that have had these tunes for a very long time on their Tacomas, and to my knowledge they have had no issues.. nor have they jeopardized the longevity of their engines and powertrain. However, there is always a risk, even if it’s a very small percentage… I honestly enjoy the truck so much now that the tune has been done that whatever slight risk there is.. to me it is worth it. I definitely don’t drive the truck hard. I’m not trying to race away in it every chance I get.. it’s just nice having a truck that has better shift points and doesn’t gear hunt so much… a well and balanced machine now.. I’ll be keeping an eye on it and report any issues or problems I may encounter. Good to hear from ya!🤙🏼
Justin stated the VVT system is re-worked for the tune. I think stock it uses VVT-iW almost all the time. OTT feels like it disables this system until part throttle cruise is reached. @@westcoasttaco
Hey man great video, I have the same setup, lite/mild, have you tried mild (ect) button on the highway? If not try it out and let me know what you think?
Sorry to bother, question for you thought you might know. Will there be and update on our OTT? 🤷🏻♀️ I see KDMAX has a 10.0 now so I was just curious if our tune would even need and update.
No worries at all! From what I’ve heard a lot of people have been making the switch from KDMAX and going with the OTT as of late. A lot of people say the shifting on the KDMAX is kind of aggressive and they aren’t super satisfied with it. I believe OTT has fine tuned their current version to the best of their capabilities. However, you never know?? They could change or add something, but I doubt it.. if they did upgrade something I believe that would be included in the initial fee you paid and you could upgrade without having to pay an additional fee. I’ll ask Q and see if he thinks anything new is on the horizon 👍🏼
I really appreciate you and fully agree that we have the best! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question. Keep making videos I enjoy everyone of them! Have a great night!!
On this video, I was on the light/mild.. however, they have been doing a mild /medium and everyone I have seen has really liked it.. they put me on a medium/spicy and that gives me a ton of torque.. some people depending on their build may not like it that much so I would say the mild/medium is probably going to be perfect for you if your truck doesn’t have a ton of weight on it. The tuner will let you try different levels before you leave. If you’re not happy with the first one, he puts on. I would say try what they recommend first and if you want it adjusted they can do that for you.
@westcoasttaco what motivated your move from light/mild to the medium/spicy? Anything in particular you didn’t like about the first set up? Any pointers to help us decide on the best setting possible for everyday driving? Just like you I’m easy on the truck and after watching your video I was almost convinced that the light/mild would be the right set up for me. However after reading that you stepped it up a notch or two I started second guessing. Thanks in advance
Yeah I gotta do this. Every time I turn on to my road if I don't floor it the truck up shifts way to fast going up a small incline and then immediately down shifts. Its so damn annoying. Makes me wish it was a manual. But even the manual guys get OTT so its just the software I guess.
Yes, this truck's transmission was electronically nerfed to meet EPA nonsense. If the government wants to accelerate electric car adoption, it should build a next gen battery technology. Instead, they just seem to be obsessed with making gas powertrains worse. Unfortunately, retunes have a dark side. They technically void your powertrain warranty and if you don't declare it with your insurance company, a bad accident will bankrupt you.
Currently have the tune as well, on 265/75 r16 P rated Falken's AT3's. Its better but I can't say it completely changes the truck. You are not getting 50hp, it just doesn't gear hunt 90% of the time. I am running 93 octane to get max performance and you still feel bogged at 2 to 3.5 rpm on the highway. The throttle settings just makes it shift more aggressively, I would not say it COMPLETELY fixes the response. Cruising on the highway is much more relaxing as it will hold gear and pull nice and slow and that is my biggest take away. Top end power is nice too! Take aways are that gear hunting is almost gone after this tune and there is a little more power across the rev range including top end fun. I am not getting instant torque when you touch the throttle, thats a little misleading from how it was advertised to me. Re-gearing may be the real solution to big gains in low end torque. For 400-500$ its a great upgrade for the truck if you have money BUT tire size, tire rating, rim weight etc will add or remove rotating mass = noticeable changes in performance.
Thanks for the feedback! Always great when someone else chimes in and provides feedback on their experiences and outlook on the tune, or whatever mod is being discussed.. are you running stock rims or do you have an aftermarket set? Thanks for tuning in. And thanks again for your honest feedback.🤙🏼
@@westcoasttaco stock 16's. The tuner recommended staying with 16's or finding lighter rims if I am concerned with performance. Light rims are super pricey so going to a set of Michelin LTX all seasons would be my best bet for amazing grip and good snow and dirt performance. Would shave a couple pounds per tire which is huge. I have come to terms with the fact that the Tacoma is no Cummins lulz!

If higher octane fuel costs 20 percent more and you are only getting 10 percent better MPG, you are wasting your money. Just buy your fuel from an oil company and not walmart. @@pamlucchino4878 Sweeeet! 👍🏼👍🏼 So I have been running premium.. 87 is totally fine and the tune will adjust to whatever octane you use.. But I noticed the economics were essentially the same because my mpgs approved by 60-70 a tank.. just my 2 cents.. hope this helps!🤙🏼
I know the primary reason for these tunes was the automatic transmission shifting issues, but what about those of us with manual transmissions. The laggy hesitation and flat spots are still a problem for us to.

I live in temecula! Haha awesome 👌
My 2022 SR5 V6 averages 345ish to the tank right now, before getting a tune.
Check out this link: overlandtailor.com/truth-be-told-dyno
Also the OTT is the only federal legal tune.
2022 $ Runner ORP. I have 6K miles on it. I am ready. First step is the OTT.
Thanks for the review. 👍🏼
My pleasure man👍🏼!
Hey thanks for the info ℹ️….did also the ott dive you some betters MPG improvements??? Man this things drink gas ⛽️ like dragons
I did! About 3-4 mpgs per gallon!
Great video. Does anyone know why Toyota does not have it tuned this way? Thanks for sharing your video!
Thanks for the detailed answer! @@westcoasttaco
Here’s a good thread on this: www.tacomaworld.com/threads/overland-torque-tune-ott-by-overland-tailor.759590/
Justin stated the VVT system is re-worked for the tune. I think stock it uses VVT-iW almost all the time. OTT feels like it disables this system until part throttle cruise is reached. @@westcoasttaco

I’ve hit the ECT Button before and it kicks the Taco into another gear for sure! 🤙🏼
Cool video.
Can you delete the tune and go back to stock if ever needed?
Yes, you can definitely have it reflashed back to the stock tune if you wanted.
So you are on light/mild or mild/medium?
Great video by the way thank you for all the info !
@@westcoasttaco yes based on what I heard the mild medium seems to be the nice Goldilocks. Thanks for your reply.

Does it change the motors torque curve or just the transmission shifting?
Both! This Tune transforms the Tacoma.. DO IT! You will thank me later!
What do you think avoid installing headers in your truck?
Is there somewhere in Panama City fl I can get this done?
Yeah I gotta do this. Every time I turn on to my road if I don't floor it the truck up shifts way to fast going up a small incline and then immediately down shifts. Its so damn annoying. Makes me wish it was a manual. But even the manual guys get OTT so its just the software I guess.
It’s a game changer.. no doubt about it 👍🏼
Did you notice any changes in the gas mileage at all?
Any issues with the tune
And you been able to pass emissions?
👍
