This video!!! If anybody is having the infamous Tacoma shudder, trust this video!! I was falling down the rabbit hole spending tons of money servicing my truck trying to find the issue until I came across this video. Followed exactly what he did, and my Tacoma is running buttery smooth. Thank you for helping out us fellow taco owners.
Thank you so much! I just bought a 17 Tacoma that’s doing the same exact thing, initially I thought it was misfire and changed all the coils and spark plugs. So glad I came across your video. Thank you!
Man you have done a hands down jam up job describing this to a T. I couldn't have said it any better myself. It's like you were describing my truck in every symptom. It has is exactly what you said exactly at 40 mph. Everything is exactly the same in my 2019 Tacoma. And yes I am in that problem solving phase and I am so glad I found your video. Thank you so much! It was such a great help
Sorry to hear you’re having this problem!… never fun to work through these issues, especially when it comes to a transmission.. but it’s been several months now and my truck has been running absolutely phenomenal after doing the fluid changes and getting the Overland torque tune.. I’ve seen people throw in a bottle of shudder fix by lubeguard.. my mechanic said it wasn’t necessary and I didn’t use it on mine.. but some people swear by it.. anyhow, if you have any questions, always feel free to reach out and good luck to you man! 👍🏼🤙🏼
I’m having the same issues with my 23 Tacoma, as does my friend who owns a 19. I forwarded this video onto him. We both plan on having our Tacoma’s Tuned
Dude, you're a life saver! This has been driving me crezy! 2016 Tacoma! I usually get it coming out of a turn or maybe a small bump but never thought it was speed related. Then again, I never get it on the highway.
Great video, our 2016 Taco TRD is having the same issues, while debating on the next move on what to do what to do. This video kinda sums it up with doing drain and fills and quite possibly a tune.
Thank you now I know exactly what I need to do. Bc you describe exactly what is happening to my Tacoma. I haven’t been having this problem till recently. Thanks
Awesome video. Now subscribed. I appreciate your honesty and walking us through the process of problem solving. I shake my head because it's hard to know "proper maintenance" especially when the dealership tells us otherwise. Side note. I had to use a 3 ft breaker bar to loosen my oil canister after they used an impact gun. They also didn't even replace rings and the crush washer during an oil change. That broke my trust in dealerships.
Thanks John! Glad you tuned in and thanks for subscribing. I do my best to just give a very honest and thorough backstory to how I ended up where I am now. I have had too many unpleasant experiences with dealerships to ever want to go back to them for services… thankfully, I have a great mechanic who knows the ins and outs of these trucks very well, and I no longer have to rely on the dealership to do my services..thanks again for tuning in!
Same here. Dealership damaged paint 2 times on my 2020 Tundra which they had to repair. Let them do my final free oil change then when I changed it the next time the oil filter housing was torqued on so high(over 49 ft lbs) that I used a breaker bar and it broke my housing taking it off. I told Dealership and they replaced the housing free. I'm so scared of Dealership maintenance departments now
@@dalephillips8250 oh my gosh… We had an Escalade we took in to the Cadillac dealership.. they scraped our passenger side mirror… said it wasn’t their fault.. and it was like that when we brought it… paint was literally flaking off still. I took it to the body shop and paid $500.00 to have it repainted etc..
Hi, I had same issue, I replaced my VVT Solenoids - (Variable Valve Timing Solenoids) and a transmission drain and filled. On my 2015 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner V6 I now have no issues.
It's not just a problem with the torque converter hunting, what you are calling shudder. That occurs at around 45mph when the TCC gets the command to engage. It's also happening at slower speeds like 15-30mph, not a converter issue. Hunting is generally less severe as the TCC engages and chatters or it hunts (engages and disengages rapidly). The low speed shudder can feel like a bucking bronco because its generally shifting back and forth between 2-3 or 3-4 before it makes up its mind. But both issues are usually caused by old trans fluid. It can occur at 30K or at 150K, depending on how the owner uses the truck. I suspect that the friction modifiers in the fluid have broken down. Similar to the friction additive in a limited slip differential. Having clean fresh Toyota ATF WS fluid (or equivalent) will correct the problem 90% of the time. If after a good fluid change the problem still occurs I would disconnect the battery to force the tranny computer to relearn it's shift points. Only after that, if still a problem, would I have the tranny tuned to tweak the shift points. Toyota wants the vehicle in top gear asap for better emissions and MPG. But that is causing driveability problems. There are also some TSB's for certain models that call for updating the trans computer software. All part of the Emissions warranty.
Have a 2017 ,214000+ miles. I also did the pan drop , filter wash, magnet cleaning, new gasket , and fluid replacement. But I replaced with Amsoil ATF , and now have zero issues . I religiously do drain and fill every 30000 miles . Love my truck now.
I have the same issue with 2016 SR5 4/4 Tacoma and I just did the drain and fill this morning and the symptoms got better and I would definitely do another drain and fill and maybe change filter and clean the pan as well, thanks for the video it help me a lot.
I noticed this problem from the moment I brought the truck home brand new. I returned it before using the first tank of gas reporting the problem. After multiple attempts, two different service managers, I finally just gave up on it because the dealership just kept stonewalling me. I’m just over three years and 25,000 miles and not not sure if the warranty will still cover dealing with this problem. In the process of moving from Alaska down to Vancouver, Washington, and I’m gonna try and take the cars back up with a better dealership. I made at least one call to Toyota motor Corp. complaining that this dealership was stonewalling me, so there should be a record with them, but I’m not holding my breath as I’ve had zero luck with this issue in three years of trying. Love the truck otherwise but this issue has made me hate this truck from Day One. Next dealership says there’s not a problem then I’ll just trade it in for something else. Hopefully interest rates will drop soon with the current crisis underway with the Fed.
6/23/23 Strong work on this video WCT... I am relieved that there is some sort of light at the end of the tunnel now. Was looking today to trade my 23 trd off road off. 1100 miles on it. But gonna try this as a last resort. Great detail pal. Appreciate it.
Should I do the same approach for a 2007 Tacoma? Shutters at 35-40. My truck has high mileage, 245,000. Shifts well and everything just that annoying shutter here and there.
You can, I would also recommend throwing some of the shudderfix lubeguard in there as well. A lot of people have had good results from adding it when doing the fluid change.
WCT, excellent communication on this topic and your experience with resolving this issue. I spoke with John Gobbels (OTT) today in regards to scheduling. I’m just waiting for decent weather to get the tune. I have been doing a 1000 mile brake-in on the new ‘23 Off Road - 55 mph, anything but interstate driving and then an oil and filter change at 1k that I did myself because I would rather do that type maintenance. I am now of the mindset that the sooner one gets this tune, the less stress the drivetrain has to endure and that has to be better for the Tacoma in the long run. You are fortunate to have a “Jason” that you can trust and is willing to let you be there while he services your really fantastic looking TRD Off Road. I know the feeling when turning my vehicle over to a service department and not knowing as they drive away. This will be my daily driver as well and will probably never see any off roading. Because of this video, I will probably have my transmission ATF fluid level checked while it is still new to confirm it is as it should be from the factory. I have a Toyota/Lexus shop here that I can trust for that, not the dealer. At least it will give me some peace of mind on the unknown. And yes, 30,000 mile service interval for me too.
Michael, thanks for the post! Really glad you’re getting a jump on the tune! In my opinion, that should be the number one modification Tacoma owners should do to their trucks as soon as possible. I truly come from a mindset or at least used to… that the manufacturer, is going to tune and build these trucks in the best way that will keep these trucks driving for the longest and keep them running the best.. after getting the tune done, my opinion has been forever changed… at least with the Tacoma.. I think even with the shudder problems.. that the Tacoma would still run for a very long time, but that it’s life span would be decreased significantly at least the powertrain.. once I started having issues I probably put no more than 150 miles on it while I was getting the transmission fluid cycled through and then eventually the torque tune. Finding a trusted source to work on your vehicles is probably one of the most challenging aspects of being an owner of a vehicle… like you mentioned, I am very fortunate to have Jason and his plethora of knowledge on the Tacoma. I’m doing my very best to pass down the information I’m getting from him in hopes that it will help other viewers like yourself that are looking to get the most out of their tacos and best experience from it. A well maintained truck is a longer enjoyed truck. As always thanks for tuning in. Enjoy!
@@westcoasttaco I couldn’t agree with you more on the mindset of what we once automatically assumed about a vehicle’s factory setup. However, as it is, fortunately we have options now that we would not have had in the past. I am really glad to see that your issue was taken care of the way you did and as soon as you were able to. It helps to fortify the confidence I have had in Toyota for decades and continue to have. The way I see it, in large part, Toyota’s value is in their reliability & longevity. I buy them to keep for extended periods of time. The returns are long term in my opinion. As for the tune being the number one mod to the Tacoma you should make after the purchase, YES. John G. told me in an earlier conversation that when he brought his latest Tacoma home from the dealership with a little over 20 miles on it, the tune was the first thing he did to it. Thank you for taking the time to pass this information on to help others!
Thanks for this video I was stressing out so bad, bought my Tacoma ( like 10months ago used 54k miles ) currently has 67k and shuddering started I took it to a shop and told me I needed a new transmission smh. Definitely going to try this the only issue is finding a trustworthy mechanic now and days. Thanks for the video
Flush does not require a machine. Use the hose off the tranny cooler to let transmission pump fluid out 2 qt's at a time and pour 2 quarts in after draining and filling the pan. Do until new fluid comes out then do procedure to adjust for proper level.
Super true… but the best way is the way this guy did it because for one reason and one reason only as the clutches in the torque converter locks up it slowly scrapes off the varnish that is the lead cause to all of this. Your way is really really great way to exchange fluid but it’s not a flush all you’re doing is moving new fluid in and old fluid out just like a drain and fill because no clutches are scraping off the varnish. Honda trans service is like kind drain and refill 3 time first step was drain and fill drive for two miles repeat 2 more times service is done.
I noticed the TC shudder shortly after purchasing my 23 SR 4x4. Mine was about as bad as your video. I first got the ott light/mild combo. That seemed to help, but I was still able to recreate the shudder. I started using only top tier 87 gas and that too seemed to help, but I could still recreate the shudder with the right conditions. The problem is the overdrive gears. The transmission tries to get in the highest gear as quick as possible, so you end up in 6th gear when you are at the 35-45 mph range. Add the gearing the 6th gear has, the transmissions strange desire to hold a higher gear than it needs, and the little baby v6, and you end up with this TC shudder problem. Toyota does it to increase fuel economy while driveability suffers. I have yet to try 91 gas onl, but that seems to help a lot of people. I have learned to command my truck with s-mode. I have driven it enough to where I know the conditions that cause the shudder. I keep the truck is s5 99% of the time, unless its a really big hill, then I pop it into s4. You don't need 6th gear going under 65 which most roads don't exceed that speed limit around me.
Oh man! That’s super soon to notice the TC Shudder.. Did you try going up to mild/medium on the tube? May cause it to hold gears longer? I’ve been running mine with Premium fuel and have had no issues since.. between the transmission fluid changes, the tune, and premium gas everything seems to be running very smoothly now.
@westcoasttaco I would like to add that checking the atf(I was a 1/4 quart low), using top tier gas, and ott fixed the shudder in almost all situations where I was feeling it. I actually thought I had solved it, but over the weekend, I was going through the Great Smokey mountains in traffic going around 35 mph. It cleared going up a big hill. Hit the gas and it started shuddering. I think premium gas is the last piece of the equation that I'm missing. I think my truck did it from day 1. I just never hit any hills big enough to cause it on the test drive..
@@Logan-vl8ek yeah, that makes a lot of sense.. I actually drove someone’s new Tacoma recently, and could feel the shutter already on there’s. Seems like it bothers some more than others . I’m very particular with my vehicles and something being the slightest off sends off warning flags for me. I’m one of those guys that won’t stop until it’s completely and totally fixed, OCD kicks in I guess🤣.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I am having the same issue with my 2011 Tacoma pre-runner when I almost getting to 30 miles vibrate after 30 miles stop if I step on a gas fast I won’t feel it. Maybe I will do oil change on that transmission.
WCT…again an awsome insightful vid..thanks for letting into your world of this recent challenge and surprisingly poor customer experience at Toyota. It seems the common theme for most Tacoma issues is the TUNE. Will definitely get one ASAP. Look forward to next vid.
Thanks, Larry! I always appreciate reading your comments and feedback on these videos. Glad that you seem to be enjoying them. I am excited for you to get the tune. It honestly changes the experience of owning a Tacoma entirely. Definitely the best mod I’ve done yet! thanks for staying tuned, and I look forward to catching you on the next one!
I have a 2022 3rd Gen Tacoma. I have my truck tuned by OTT and after the tune. My truck feels way better, drives better responds to throttle much better.
Have a Toyota Tundra 4.6 automatic and 2x4 transmission would shutter about 35 to 45 . I did a transmission flush and used valvoline full synthetic maxlife multi -vehicle ATF Toyota WS approved an added Lube guard shutter fix and it hasn’t done it again. Hope you have the goof luck I had.
The best Automatic Transmission Fluid Additive to stop shudder, sticky valve body operation, and basically bullet proof the unit, Is Prolong Automatic Transmission Additive. It is only 8 oz and can be added to any fluid level without the risks of over filling. I've been using it for years, towing 5th wheels, and fixing issues on friends vehicles. I had a issue with my Mercedes S63 AMG, changed the fluid with Amsoil and prolong. It is like new. Mercedes fluid does not handle moisture very well. It tends to squeeze it out into the valve body making valves corrode, and stick. Prolong is pulled deep into the metal surfaces, and prevents corrosion. It is also heat activated, so no metal surfaces will get hot. Excellent for the planetaries. My secret is out
@@westcoasttaco The best of the best. It makes the solenoids glide so smoothly that the transmission works as designed. No friction material, or moisture can stop them. I love it! Amazon has it
@@joshuaclaygaines my mechanic used one of these when doing my fluid changes.. it got the job done. www.amazon.com/Slippery-Pete-Fluid-Quart-Bottles/dp/B07CX4XKFH/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=Q3N32TYI6RQ5&keywords=transmission+fluid+pump&qid=1689639702&sprefix=transmis%2Caps%2C186&sr=8-3
I've been following that forum thread. After hearing your shudder in this video, I'm hoping that cause of my bad vibes isn't TC shudder, but something less worrisome, because what I hear in your video isn't the same as my bad vibes. I'm 6 days from installing brand new Falken Wildpeak AT3 275/70r17 (currently on AT3 in 265) , and less than 30 days from installing the Eibach stage 2R kit, ECGS needle bearing. If I still have bad vibes, I will replace the carrier bearing or likely the entire driveshaft assembly with one directly from Toyota.
Although I have never owned a Tacoma, as soon as I saw the word sudder in the video description, I could almost sympathize immediately. I have owned a 2018 SS Camaro, and currently drive a 2020 Hyundai Kona that has the same shudder issue. Similar to the explanation that your service department told you, I was told by my Hyundai service manager was that I could bring my car in to check out my issue, but would be charged $150+ dollars should they not be able to replicate the issue in their opinion. Also that the transmission was sealed, so no fluid change or other servicing could be performed and would just be replaced if Hyundai felt it was warranted.
After downloading the Overland Torque Tune, did that stop your Tacoma from Hunting for Gears? I hate this in my 23. Also when my Tacoma downshifts into 5th gear, the whole truck vibrates and makes a groaning sound. Any ideas? I’ve got less than 7K miles on it
Definitely get it tuned. It will feel like a completely different truck.. trust me, you won’t regret it.. it will fix all of these issues you are having.
Have not experienced this issue, but did a half of fluid replacement in the transmission at 65K miles. Yes, the transmission was under-filled--only about 1.5-2 qrts came out. I was all shocked after reading the instruction from the Toyota TIS, on how such a low quantity of fluid came out. So, at the factory they did a shitty job. Mine was built in Mexico. Now, I am wondering if this maintenance was too long overdue. Toyota dealer said to do a full fluid replacement at 150K. That is crazy.
Yikes! Glad you did yours sooner than later.. amazes me that dealers don’t double check this before putting them on the floor.. what year is your truck?
Mine is a 2017 TRD off-road. Thinking about it, I am wondering if the dealer had changed the transmission fluid, or messed with it, when I previously took it in for a check of the transmission, when I had less than 20K miles on this truck.@@westcoasttaco
Hello! I have 65 k 2019 sr 4x4 Thanks the video! I did one drain and fill but mine got slightly worse shudder wise. 1 to 2 shift is also kinda hard. So I’m thinking about doing more flushes. My question is on the the flushing procedure you described. There’s several other videos on it on TH-cam and most go through the connecting certain pins together with a wire in the odb port and putting the transmission in a “self flushing mode” when done correctly it expels excess fluid out of the overfill. Your mechanic did not tell you to do that? Just wondering based on the description of the procedure in the video thanks!
@@RUGBYmusic hope your shudder goes away soon! So what he did was pump the fluid into the transmission until fluid came out of the overfill drain. Once it slowed and came to a dribble he tightened the plugs. You could also try adding a bottle of the line guard shudder fix platinum. A lot of guys have had success with that as well. Would also strongly recommend the tune. It’s a game changer.
@@westcoasttaco thanks for the quick reply and clarification! I’d definitely like to the tune after watching your video you can tell it shifts so smooth!
I have a 21 Tacoma 4x4. So far no shutter at 33K. I plan to do the transmission drain and fill at 60. If you watch the car care nut channel he’s a former Toyota Master technician. He gives a detailed account how to do the transmission drain and fill. That’s what I plan on doing good luck
Did you try the additive Lube Guard for transmission? After your transmission flush you put this in with the new trans oils and it eliminates the shutter. Saw several TH-cam videos on this.
The method you described is missing a lot of details. You have to get the transmission to a specific temperature. There is a specific method for doing this. When it reaches the proper temp, you remove the "check" plug, let it drain, then tighten all of the plugs. You have a small window of time to drain the fluid from the "check" plug and to replace/tighten the "check" plug. "Team Oil Drop" youtube video has a good video on how to replace the transmission fluid.
Same experience. Toyota told me I should replace my transmission for over $5k. Went to an independent transmission shop, they flushed it and added a shudder fix additive. That was over six months ago and the issue has resolved.
I recently bought a 2017. It does a little shutter at low acceleration, I don't know if it the fluid has ever been changed. It has 114.000 miles on it. I'm going to look into getting it survived.
@@westcoasttaco I'm in canada. I thought about it a little more and it's more of a little vibration. It doesn't do it all the time. But your video sure made it clear. It shifs very smooth. It's my first time owning a tacoma over all I love the truck.
My problem was & still is on my 2017 Tacoma TRD off-road 4x2 that once I am coming to a stop sounds like my driveline has a clank sound & feels that I was lightly bumped into from rear, my truck only has 42k miles on it now when I took it in at 25k miles to have it checked they said it's normal to have the sound & kick coming to a stop which is not true I had many trucks that never done this, a mech drove with me going around the blocks didn't do it just as I left the dealership started up again, what I do notice is if I come up to a sudden stop it will do it if I come up to a stop in a slow coasting speed it won't do it it's a real head scratcher with this issue.
We were on the exact same page your video is like you read my mind. I've owned so many toyotas I am completely let down by this truck. I've done the drain and fill. It helps significantly my next service. I will drop the Pan and change the filter. I am at 150000 miles.
@westcoasttaco good to know I've heard about the OV tune a while back, and one other can't think of the name. But like all things I'm skeptical when it comes to having to run aftermarket anything to make something work as it should.
Had the same problem with my 2014 rav4 new torque converter under warranty now shift problems. So drain and fill with valvoline maxlife no Toyota WS fluid I’m on my 2 gallon of fluid and added shudder fix lube works great try the max life fluid way better than Toyota WS fluid
@@westcoasttaco has not solved my problem still have a jerking when in 5-6 gear so I have been manually shifting 1-4 not using 5-6 until I get a pressure shift solenoid replaced and another fluid change we’ll see
Really good chronicleof this issue! I have a 2nd gen Tacoma PreRunner, stock at 280k miles. My shudder happens at 10-20mph on acceleration from a stop. I've changed the spark plugs prior to getting this sudden shudder[never had an issue before]. I've read your replies about an ATF drain and fill. Is that a good start to try?
Hi there… I got the same issue with my 2017 Tacoma and Toyota dealer wants to replace whole transmission, you think replacing only the torque converter resolve the problem?
2016 Tacoma changed the oil at 120k at the dealer flush. I hit 160k it’s cold temps and I start to get the shudder and figured out how to get out of it the same exact way, let off or press the gas more. Took it to the dealer did 3-4 consecutive drains. Fixed the shutter for me. I’m at 194k(I drive a lot) now the issue is i can be cruising 75-80mph and out of nowhere i get this hard jerk almost like if you’d be stepping on the gas and drop it from park to drive instantly thats how hard it feels. The whole truck just takes a big “hit”. Yesterday cruising 35-45 it started the shudder again(cold, didn’t fully let it get to temp like I normally do) get out onto a backroad/highway cruising 55-70mph for maybe 40-50 mins, nothing happens, kick up in speed going 80 and at around the 25 min mark of driving at that speed it starts to jerk hard, I let go and drop it to 70-73 and its fine again. Unlike this past time where it was doing it at that speed randomly or at the 35-45 area, after I get off the freeway, come to a stop at a stoplight and it turns green i press on the gas and instantly shudders on me like if it wanted to stall almost the same feeling/symptom. Took it to the dealer going to do the 4 drains again hopefully that helps, but like how you said, got to be strict on the 30k mark it seems like. Anybody else with high mileage experiencing this or if you haven’t maybe this’ll keep it in mind when you get to that high mileage point. Thanks for the vid.
Man that sucks.. sorry to hear you’re dealing with this as well. It’s a very frustrating thing to work through.. and to have it pop up again after already getting the issue fixed once is so frustrating.. just curious, is your truck tuned? Also, I’ve seen some guys on the Tacoma forms, recommend lubeguard platinum, shudder fixx. It’s only like $20 a bottle and a lot of people seem to have really good results… might be worth throwing a bottle of that in.. probably wouldn’t hurt anything. Let me know what happens. Best of luck to you.
If you have a similar problem, you will read all the comments below and there is a soution. First, Toyota does not confirm their ATF WS to be fully synthetic, I believe that 2 commenters below and various forum contributors (I'm on Bill the oil guy) use fully synthetic atf and it is likely far superior. This shudder problem is not unique to Toyota and I agree that it has everything to do with fuel economy rating that causes the manufacture to shift to higher gears earlier and in Toyotas situation to institute a flex lock system in lower gears (I have a 12 4runner but not sure if taco has it). I've successfully used lubegard shudderfix on my 2014 honda crv for over two years which only has a slight shudder
115k miles on my 2016 TRD Off-road. I got this shutter like 2 weeks ago. Toyota said 3k for torque converter 😭 I’m going to see if the dealership I bought the truck from will cover it but if not I’ll definitely do the drain and fill
Mines a 2011 and the exhaust from accelerating is loud and mine feels like hitting a million potholes my truck is 112,000 miles ..mine shakes on the highway ..
@West Coast Taco my son purchased a 2023 off road in February early on I noticed it seemed to Rev up when I really wasn't hitting pressing the gas that hard but that's gone now. Also noticed a slight studder or hesitation when taking off after slowing for a turn 1 time. But most of all I'd like to know is it normal for the brake pedal to press back against you when starting the truck? You have to press the brake to start but it presses back after starting...maybe I'm press too hard when I start it but this doesn't happen on my 2020 Tundra.
@@dalephillips8250 Yep the brake pedal does push back against you after the start up. That’s totally normal.👍🏼 I’ve even heard that the clutch on the manuals comes back to you slowly when you press it in .. not sure how slow, but it sounded like it did something similar to the break pedal on a start up for the automatics.. I really did notice the shudder when going from a stop into a turn, especially as I was accelerating slightly in the turn.. I wonder if you felt the same thing? Definitely wouldn’t hurt having the transmission fluid level looked at to make sure it’s at the proper levels…
@@westcoasttaco Thanks for the input sir. Won't be able to get that tune though as we are in Ohio. Unless we visit CA. Taco's are the most reliable mid-sized for sure but even they have their little issues. Will it help if when going up long hills you use the ECT or use the manual shift and keep you gears under 4th when when going up a long hill under 40MPH . Maybe this is why Toyota looks at this as a normal operation of the transmission. A real problem with a TC is noticed even on flat roads.
Possibly.. Honestly, I never really tried but I was getting the shudder even on flat roads so I don’t know if that would really make too much of a difference.. besides, I feel like a vehicle should not be doing this regardless, especially an automatic transmission.. if somebody is bogging down because they don’t know how to use a manual and which gear to shift into.. then that’s a completely different problem… but I’ve never driven another automatic transmission vehicle that required me to engage anything or put it into manual shift mode just because I’m driving up a slight incline either.. however, I understand your theory here👍🏼🤙🏼
@@westcoasttaco ok that’s true shouldn’t do this shudder especially if it’s doing it on flat roads. Toyota should of came up with a bulletin to re flash ecm for this condition. They are capable of doing so .Thank you for the reply and all your videos . I just got a 2022 trd sport with 8k on seems fine to me as of now . But will do all my fluid changes as your mechanic Jason has recommended.I always change engine oil at 5k and trans fluid at 20k on all my other vehicles .I had a 03 Tacoma I sold 2 years ago do to frame rot . I kept all the fluids upto date on it and she was good to me . The northeast salt roads took the frame out on her lol 😂
@@albono780 congrats! I think a lot of people are going to be very happy that they went with this last generation of the V6. There's a lot of people who swear that the Toyota factories in Mexico that assemble Tacomas underfill the transmission. It's hard to believe but I guess it can be true.
Check your transmission fluid level. Chances are that it's low even when they tell you that it's at a perfect level. It's never at a perfect level. What happens when there's not enough transmission fluid? Shudder cause by torque converter due to lack of insufficient fluid. Your torque converter is perfectly fine when there's enough fluid in it. My 2028 Traverse started getting that shudder at 35 to 45 mph. At first I thought my torque converter is going bad, but after doing some thinking I decided to add a a quart more. Did the shifting between gears to get it all flow nicely. And guess what....the shudder went away. 18:33
My 2021 has a shudder but its completely different from your rumble strip style vibration. Mine feels more like a hesitation with a jerk. Like how fuel cut feels but not as intense. Same deal...40-55mph...low rpm...high gear... slight incline. If I let off the gas or punch it to force a downshift, it goes away.
Same. Like a worn u-joint or a slight misfire. I think what you're experiencing is the same as everyone else. Luckily, the fix seems to be a bottle of stuff 🤷♂️
I’m currently experiencing the same problem. Would you recommend for me to do a drain and fill or do a flush ? I also see that you’re from north county any shop recommendation?
I would just do a drain and fill. Call this guy, he did my work for me. Jason Tacoma Mechanic (Located in North County San Diego, CA): 1-760-566-6157. Tell him I sent you.
Thanks for sharing! I’ve been trying to diagnose this problem for 2 months. I’m at 91K on my 18’. 4 Drain and fills and an OTT tune will fix this. How often to I change between those four drain and fills?
Hey! Congrats!! Yep I live in Vista. If you’re open to it.. would love to meet up sometime. Maybe even do a side by side comparison of the two of them.. would be cool for people to see the changes between the two. What color did you roll with?
@@westcoasttaco A meet up would be great. I have considered some of the mods you have done to your truck. I would love to ask you some questions and get some additional feedback on those mods. My truck is white. 650 miles to date.
@@mattbayer3986 Great, I look forward to it 👍🏼. Sweet! The Ice Cap looks very nice.. they will look very good side by side. What days are usually best for you?
How much fluid did it take each time you drained and refilled the tranny? I watched the whole video. maybe I missed it? Thank you for sharing this info about the shudder issue, my 2018 TRD OR is doing it now. 150,000 miles
Sorry to hear this man.. It should drain about 3.3 qts of fluid. Since you have over 100k on yours it may not be a bad idea to throw in a bottle of that lubeguard platinum shudderfix as well. Some of the guys on the Tacoma forum rave about that stuff and have had good results.. let me know how it goes 👍🏼
West Coast ... I'm in Orange CA...having same problem and would love to have the place that your going for the tune and the tech Famous Jason. Please share
Saw a couple your videos, Jason servicing your truck and the converter shutter. My experience is actually a bit worse. We bought a brand new 23 model and on the 5th day of ownership it went to misfire. Took it to Toyota dealer and was told it was bad gas. We were told the tank was dropped fuel replaced and system was “cycled”. Cost was $300 becuadro that is not covered under warranty. Got it back after they had driven it as well as my wife, with no problem. After getting home my was gonna go to her zumba class only to call 5 mins after she took off, that the truck was acting up again. Had towed back to the shop and now being told that they are diagnosing injectors and so on. My thought was, why wasn’t this done to start off. Get this bought it 9/4/23 drove it for 201 miles and here we are 9/18/23 tuck still in the shop. Fortunately we do have a loaner but still this does not feel right.
Wow!! Talk about a nightmare.. so sorry to hear this is happening.. I would probably try to claim “lemon law” and have them exchange it for a new one… that’s absolutely terrible.. what trim level is it?
It doesn’t matter if I have a manual or automatic transmission, but I Always change the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid Every 30K miles, as well as the brakes are bled and the power steering fluid is changed. I also change the oil and filter every 5K miles with Mobile 1 High Mileage Full Synthetic. The high mileage oil has additives in it that reduce wear. With the prices of vehicles nowadays, maintenance is far cheaper than buying a new vehicle. I’m almost 60 years old and I know that my 23 Tacoma will be the last vehicle that I’ll ever need to own. We drove our last one for 28 years and it had plenty of life left in it, but we needed a double cab for our aging parents who can no longer drive.
Tunes wont get rid of the shudder. Ive had Kdmax done. I have the shudder and so do others Ive talk to omline. It comes back a short time later. High octane fuel 91/93 is the only thing myself and others have found that helps.
@@equalizer2233 Oh dang.. well if it comes back you guys will be in store for another “troubleshoot” video.. I’ve ran 91 octane pretty much since I’ve had the truck and the shudder started regardless.. how long after you got the KDMaxx tune did it take for the shudder to return? I have the OTT but I doubt the tunes vary too much.. but you never know. Thanks for the feedback 👍🏼
@@westcoasttaco It was a few months afterward. First I added a tube of Shudder Fix. I used it before and it helped on another vehicle but didnt help for this issue. Then I did a drain and fill on the transmission to make sure the fluid level was good. That didnt fix the problem. Then i had the dealer do a transmission flush. Still had the shudder. I hope to see u do a followup video at some point whatever the long term results are and hope things continue to be good for you.
I had the same issue on a 2016 2 years ago. Got a transmission flush (power purge is what they call it) at a local transmission place and it fixed the shudder immediately. Haven’t felt it in 2 years. It was $330 with tax.
I drive my 2017 tacoma like theirs no tomorw 80-85 mph on freways, never go speed limit on streets i get 11-13 mpg, never had a problem ,,drive like you own it,trust me
I have a 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD OR Automatic. If there's a vibration on accelerating from a stop in 1st gear and it goes away before shifting into 2nd gear, what might be the cause of this? I've researched this thoroughly and the only common issues are vibration at particular highway speeds but I haven't found anything with my particular problem. Please help!
@@westcoasttacoYes but it did it before and after. No change in 1st gear vibration. Although if I accelerate more aggressively it doesn’t do it as much.
@@jp.taco.tues.colorado could be your torque converter.. mine kind of did the same thing. If I hit the acceleration harder it would usually not make the vibration.. I would start with a fluid change and refill. Maybe consider adding the “lube guard shudder fix platinum” as well. Some Tacoma owners swear by that stuff. You can see if that helps and then a tune would probably not be a bad idea. When you lifted did you replace your needle bearing?
Mine doesn’t make that sound it just has a little bounce at 40-45mph after it downshifts but it’s got 16k miles it shouldn’t do that! And I HATE how it always shifts to I higher gear expecting you to brake to “save the brake pad life” I want to disable that so bad idk what to do
Same is happening to me after I went thru 2 foot of water. Took it to a mechanic told me to buy 14 quarts trans filter from Toyota which I did he said there was water in the fluid after he replaced the fluid and drove it he said it was still doing it but less he added Torque converter shutter fluid to the trans and it went away. I drove the truck for 5,6 days it was perfect now it started doing it again on low rpm slight incline . Should have him drain and do the same process over is it possible that there is still water in my transmission. Any help thoughts would be appreciated thank you
Never had a issue until now with 212,000 on Tacoma sport. Now there's a whistling supercharger Sound when charging gears. Dealer says it's probably the torque converter. Oh started after paying 4k for Timing Cover leak. Took it back to the dealer and they added ATF. Still the same noise and rougher shifting at times. What should I do?
That’s a tough one… especially since your truck has a significant amount of miles on it at this point.. when was the last time your ATF was drained and filled? Did they just add ATF or did they do a drain and fill it and then add some more once you came back?
I noticed in in my 2019 Tacoma also. I was not sure what it was. But my problem was not nearly as bad as what you are experiencing. Mine was mild compared to that. Just by coincidence, I chamged the transmission fluid 2 weeks ago (35k miles). I have not notice if the shudder is gone or not, but I will pay attention more and see if it is gone.
I have a 2017 and it has 107k on it and it just started doing the shutter at 20-30 mph I haven’t done anything to fix it yet don’t know where to start it only happens with low RPM or easing it off the light or from a stop If I put a good amount of gas it won’t do it through that speed only at 20-30 with low rpm? Any suggestions?
I’m new to the Tacoma world with a 23 Off Road Taco. I see a lot of videos on the “Pedal Commander?” Would this be a solution? What is the difference, if any? Thanks for a great video!
Hey Dave! Thank you for tuning in and congratulations on joining the Tacoma world! The Tacoma is really what you make of it… you can leave it stock and live with some of its flaws.. or you can tap in to modifying and adjusting certain portions of the truck that just aren’t refined… and come out with a much better and smoother running machine. So to answer your question… the pedal commander is essentially a switch that intercepts the signal between the gas pedal and the engine. It’s essentially tricking the engine by telling it, that you’re giving it more gas than you really are, regardless of where your foot is really at on the gas pedal. For example, the pedal commander has several different modes in which you can adjust the way that the signal is interpreted by the engine.. so giving it a little gas on eco-mode will feel a lot different than giving it a little bit of gas on sport plus mode.. at the end of the day the tune is technically and probably arguably the “right” way to fix a lot of the engine, transmission, and lack of power that the Tacoma gives you from the factory.. all of the power, and the torque is already there under the hood, but due to emissions and regulations when you buy this vehicle stock, you’re not able to tap into the true power and resources that the Tacoma holds under the hood.. I’ve spoken with several people that had the pedal commander prior to getting the tune, and they were so happy with the results that the tune provided them because it’s really fixing and re-programming the computers that are talking with each other when the truck is deciding to shift up or down. I’m going to put a link of the video below that I made regarding the OT tune and I hope you enjoy it. Let me know if you have any questions on it. I’ll be happy to help. The reason a lot of people opt for the pedal commander is because you can buy it and plug it in and then just unplug it when you don’t want to use it or not turn it.. when you have someone tune your vehicle, there’s always potentially a risk of somebody doing something wrong which is why it’s vital that your tuning is done by a certified tuner, who is licensed and doing it legitimately.. I hope this helps answer some of the questions you may have, but feel free to reply back with anything that did not make sense or I was not clear on, but essentially the pedal commander masks the problem, but doesn’t actually change the way your transmission and engine are communicating.. while the tune actually fixes and addresses the problems and gives you a very smooth and refined Tacoma. Enjoy! th-cam.com/video/amkDEr8YoVc/w-d-xo.html
This tune won’t pose any problems when I need to get it smogged here in California? You do still recommend the Trany fluid change as well? Thanks again!
@@davehughes6798 great question, so I would recommend making sure your transmission fluid is at the correct level. Since your Tacoma is so new, I think getting a tranny fluid change would be a little overkill but that’s gonna be your decision to make. Regarding the tune and your truck passing smog… as you may notice from my videos. I am also a California dweller and I got my tune done by Q with TK421 Tuning. Here is his link. tk421tuning.com/ Not sure where you live but if it makes sense, I think making the trip to Q would be well worth it. Before you get the tune done, you have to sign a waiver, and the smog question is a part of it. Also make note that you can always have your truck returned back to stock and then back to tune once you pay the $450 it’s essentially a membership and you’re not going to get charged to have modifications done to the tune in the event you need to change something. Here’s what it says regarding the smog: Will my truck pass smog [READ CAREFULLY]? • Our test trucks have passed the new smog checks, we don't guarantee results because our tunes are not CARB (California Air Resources Board) approved, nor do they have an E.O. (Executive Order) issued by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). However we are confident that your vehicle can pass since we do not tamper with existing smog, emissions or CEL/MIL in your vehicle. • California vehicles less than 4 model years old can pay a smog abatement fee for the first 8 years the new vehicle is registered AKA you don't have to smog your truck after 8 years if you're the original owner. (www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-registration/smog-inspections/) • Starting 19 July 2021, CARB (California Air Resources Board) has imposed new regulations in which your vehicle may or may not pass smog checks and their testing requirements, by tuning your vehicle you acknowledge and accept this responsibility as your own.
@@davehughes6798 correct, Q is in Santa Ana. I would email him as he schedules tuning sessions all over and may be planning a meet closer to you at some point. I’m more than happy with the Tune and wish I would have done it sooner.. Are you having a shudder problem or just looking to get your truck running well? In regards to MPG’s haven’t noticed a change to be honest.. I was averaging 309 miles per tank and seem to be at the same as of now. I’ve only gone through 2 tanks so far since I got the tune so time will tell if this changes. Feel free to reach anytime if you questions or concerns. Always happy to help! Stay tuned 👍🏼!
This is a awesome video , i have a 23 coming next week , in wonder if i should wait to see if i have this issue or start replacing factory fluid right away ?????
I would just check to make sure your ATF is at the right level and then get the Overland Torque Tune. The Tune will allow the transmission and engine to operate in a better and more efficient manner.
I bought my 22 tacoma new and now 8 months later at 25,000 miles it feels like the transmission is slipping. I have an appointment to take the truck to the dealership tomorrow and I suspect that they will find that the transmission fluid is low and just top it off and try to send me on my way. I'm sure that damage has already been done if it is low and I want it resolved rather than covered up.
Man.. sorry to hear this.. is the “slipping” different then the example of the shudder I show on the video? You don’t happen to live in SoCal do you? Would be more than happy to help if you were nearby.. thankfully your truck is so new that Toyota shouldn’t be able to deny your warranty etc.. let me know if they try to pull the “normal characteristics” card.
What kind is your truck, ? Looks so cool 😎. I have a 2023 off road ,dark gray in color! With only 15 hundred miles on it , got it in January, don’t drive it much it’s my retirement truck , I drive my ranger to work . Soon as I pay it off I get to retire! Thanks again for the heads up 🆙 on all the troubleshooting!
Thank you! It’s a 2020 DCLB TRD Off Road 4x4 with the TRD lift kit and a bunch of other TRD accessories. Sounds like retirement is coming soon for you! Thanks for tuning in. Enjoy!
There are a lot of options of the drain and fill maintenance. I follow the procedure and consistently only get 2.5 quarts when I drain it. I. Not sure why this video says 3.3 to 3.7 quarts should be the amount.
I have a 2016 Tacoma TRD sport. And around 20 to 25 mph at tend to shake. I’m currently at about 113,000 miles but at 85,000 miles I had the transmission fluid changed. Do you think I should just go with the overland tune to fix this problem?
I would definitely do the Overland Torque Tune. You may want to do a fluid change on your ATF one more time before doing so just to make sure the fill level is correct and that there aren’t any warning signs in the fluid. I’ve seen a few guys on the forum also recommend www.amazon.com/Lubegard-63010-Platinum-Universal-Protectant/dp/B002MB57UI/ref=pd_aw_fbt_img_m_sccl_2/144-4976799-0387147?pd_rd_w=yemjo&content-id=amzn1.sym.7e08813e-b3a0-49ca-880a-9bdd964e1dd4&pf_rd_p=7e08813e-b3a0-49ca-880a-9bdd964e1dd4&pf_rd_r=G28GR21RWAGHP38D77T4&pd_rd_wg=HhzFU&pd_rd_r=c90a00c4-a255-4fbd-9605-c398ec3c1574&pd_rd_i=B002MB57UI&psc=1 as well and have appeared to have good success with it. May not hurt to add a bottle of this on the drain and fill. Let me know how it goes 👍🏼
Definitely no clunk.. however I had another guy reach out on this video that had the same issue you were having and the dealer told him the same thing. His comment is somewhere in the thread.
Have you checked your gas mileage since you’ve gotten the tune cause I just got a 2023 Trd off-road and I got about 5000 miles on it with no tune and I’m getting around 20 miles per gallon and I really don’t want to mess with that. but I don’t want to destroy my truck to get 20 miles to the gallon. I would rather have my truck last for 300,000 miles.
For me, it actually increased my MPG‘s. I’m averaging about 19 to 20 on the highway and probably 14 to 15 around town.. there are some people that actually lose MPGs when they get the tune but to me, that seems to be more of a rarity.
Stoked for you man! Never fun dealing with truck issues, but glad the same remedy fixed your problems as well 👍🏼🤙🏼
I highly recommend Royal Purple Max ATF it was made for this problem and it can reduce heat by 20 degrees and it last much longer
This video could of been 5 minutes long but he goes on and on.
It's ridiculous
Whomp whomp whomp wah womp wah whomp...
Holy Crap, its like the engine mounts broke. Glad you found the fix, thanks for sharing
Dude, you're a life saver! This has been driving me crezy! 2016 Tacoma! I usually get it coming out of a turn or maybe a small bump but never thought it was speed related. Then again, I never get it on the highway.
Thank you! After hours of searching I finally come across your video. I don't have a port 13 and I was about ready to give up
Thank you for your Video! Just bought a 2023 Toyota Tacoma Trail and Toyota says it just normal drive characterists!
Great video, our 2016 Taco TRD is having the same issues, while debating on the next move on what to do what to do. This video kinda sums it up with doing drain and fills and quite possibly a tune.
You certainly have the "gift of gab". I'll give you that much.
Thank you now I know exactly what I need to do. Bc you describe exactly what is happening to my Tacoma. I haven’t been having this problem till recently. Thanks
if anyone wants to know the answer without listening to the entire 30 minutes of story telling, skip to 24:09.
thx lol
People complain this video is long, but it was well done and relatable all the way through if you've been through it..
Hi,
I had same issue,
I replaced my VVT Solenoids - (Variable Valve Timing Solenoids) and a transmission drain and filled. On my 2015 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner V6
I now have no issues.
I have a 2017 Camry with the same issue, and it has 170K miles. you did the fluid replacement 214k and no problems?
I have the same issue with 2016 SR5 4/4 Tacoma and I just did the drain and fill this morning and the symptoms got better and I would definitely do another drain and fill and maybe change filter and clean the pan as well, thanks for the video it help me a lot.
Glad to hear it👍🏼. Keep me posted and consider getting it tuned once the improvement continues.
My 2016 just started doing this.
Thanks for sharing.
Nice truck I have the exact truck and tail light just like yours.with out any.torque converter problems.cheers from Indiana.
Make sure to get that truck tuned with the OTT🤙🏼
I have a 22 just started feeling the shutter 28 000 miles. I thank you 👍
Should I do the same approach for a 2007 Tacoma? Shutters at 35-40. My truck has high mileage, 245,000. Shifts well and everything just that annoying shutter here and there.
You can, I would also recommend throwing some of the shudderfix lubeguard in there as well. A lot of people have had good results from adding it when doing the fluid change.
I have same vehicle/same mileage. Did you fix your shudder?
Hope it gets worked out!
Make sure you find the right mechanic that knows I took my truck to2 shops $1500 in it’s doing it again

88k on mine. Bought it new in 2020.
Snow, desert, mountains, off road, loaded. Not a problem at all.
Haven’t touched the tran fluid
Whats do you mean by getting a "tune"? A tune up? Changing the coil packs? (Newbie here).
My local transmission shop did a flush on my 2016 Tacoma. It didn’t help. Is it worth doing a drain and fill?
you should try royal purple max atf
I have a 2022 3rd Gen Tacoma. I have my truck tuned by OTT and after the tune. My truck feels way better, drives better responds to throttle much better.
Have a Toyota Tundra 4.6 automatic and 2x4 transmission would shutter about 35 to 45 . I did a transmission flush and used valvoline full synthetic maxlife multi -vehicle ATF Toyota WS approved an added Lube guard shutter fix and it hasn’t done it again. Hope you have the goof luck I had.
Don't ever flush a transmission.
My secret is out
Awesome 👍🏼👍🏼! Never heard of it before?? I’ve heard of shudder guard, but prolong is a first for me.. Thanks for the info!!🤙🏼

Great looking Taco! Thanks for the video!
Thank you!
Man this video patinually saved me a ton of stress and time if it happens to me.
Hoping it helps a lot of people working through this issue or may people that may have have this issue down the road.. was a nightmare 🤣

You are correct. And, procedure is not complicated.
Same experience. Toyota told me I should replace my transmission for over $5k. Went to an independent transmission shop, they flushed it and added a shudder fix additive. That was over six months ago and the issue has resolved.
Glad to hear you got it all fixed up!
What "shudder fix" additive?

It’s only like $20 a bottle and a lot of people seem to have really good results… might be worth throwing a bottle of that in.. probably wouldn’t hurt anything. Let me know what happens. Best of luck to you.
Haven’t had it myself. I have stock size Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws, no lift. I just did a drain/fill of my transmission at 30K.

3:25 to see if your Tacoma has this symptom. Thanks, West Coast Taco!
Holy crap that’s bad
I have a 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD OR Automatic. If there's a vibration on accelerating from a stop in 1st gear and it goes away before shifting into 2nd gear, what might be the cause of this? I've researched this thoroughly and the only common issues are vibration at particular highway speeds but I haven't found anything with my particular problem. Please help!
Is your truck lifted?
@@westcoasttaco I did not but like I said the vibration was there before and after the lift.
Mine doesn’t make that sound it just has a little bounce at 40-45mph after it downshifts but it’s got 16k miles it shouldn’t do that! And I HATE how it always shifts to I higher gear expecting you to brake to “save the brake pad life” I want to disable that so bad idk what to do
Get the Overland Torque Tune.. all of these issues should be fixed by that.
@@westcoasttaco oh alright, it won’t affect my warranty will it?
@@mistardoyle3042 there is always a risk, but no one to my knowledge has had an issue yet: th-cam.com/users/shortsxrU_VtNrWEg?si=g8YHrt3sPap7VFWC
@@westcoasttaco oh boy I’m gonna see what the dealer says when they do the axle nut recall and go from there
Same is happening to me after I went thru 2 foot of water. Took it to a mechanic told me to buy 14 quarts trans filter from Toyota which I did he said there was water in the fluid after he replaced the fluid and drove it he said it was still doing it but less he added
Torque converter shutter fluid to the trans and it went away. I drove the truck for 5,6 days it was perfect now it started doing it again on low rpm slight incline . Should have him drain and do the same process over is it possible that there is still water in my transmission. Any help thoughts would be appreciated thank you
Probably wouldn’t hurt doing that and maybe dropping the pan this time and replacing the filter and gasket..
Sorry if you have answered this previously. What transmission fluid did you use when you did the drain and fills??
No worries! I used the Toyota OEM ATF fluid.
Good looking truck, How many Quarts dos it take for a drain and fill each time ? great Video
Have four qts hand.. will take about 3.3 qts. 👍🏼
I have a 2017 and it has 107k on it and it just started doing the shutter at 20-30 mph I haven’t done anything to fix it yet don’t know where to start it only happens with low RPM or easing it off the light or from a stop
If I put a good amount of gas it won’t do it through that speed only at 20-30 with low rpm? Any suggestions?
If it were me I would start with an ATF drain and fill and get your truck tuned.
2013, 150K my shudder incident just occurred recently. Yes at 40 mph. Never occurred before until recently at 150K
I have a 2023 SR5,,And have 8400 miles, never felt this,, so should i expect it to begin? Maybe at a certain mileage??
Thank you
Hopefully you never have this issue but if you do that’s how I fixed it.
Enjoy!

Here’s what it says regarding the smog:
Will my truck pass smog [READ CAREFULLY]?
• Starting 19 July 2021, CARB (California Air Resources Board) has imposed new regulations in which your vehicle may or may not pass smog checks and their testing requirements, by tuning your vehicle you acknowledge and accept this responsibility as your own.
I’m in Fullerton and I see Q is in Santa Ana? Sounds like this is the way to go. Thanks again! Btw…any noticeable difference in MPG?
@@westcoasttaco 👍👍👍👍
@@westcoasttaco as far as doing the Overland torque tune do you have any you can recommend for New England?
@@eckos2310 no one specific. They’ve all been great from what I have heard. Here’s a map of their tuners: overlandtailor.com/retailer-locations
@@westcoasttaco okay thank you 😊
That's when you start yelling and pull out a combo between pissed of al Pacino and Mike Tyson.
Do you have a clunk sound when you first take off? Dealership told me it was normal but I don’t think so
Definitely no clunk.. however I had another guy reach out on this video that had the same issue you were having and the dealer told him the same thing.
