Especially since she was born during the reign of her grandfather, she saw her uncle become king and her father afterwards, the question undoubtedly arose for her at some point.
Agreed. The first act by the new Sovereign is to decide which regnal name they want to be known by. This and other aspects of the immediate succession to the Crown are all stipulated by the Act of Settlement (1701) which formalised the Accession of the new Sovereign. The Americans are not expected to know this. They gave up any pretence for knowing the process of Accession once they declared independence in 1776.
Great scene, but honestly I can‘t imagine someone first in line to the throne has never heard about reginal names or thought about what theirs would be.
I wish they's gotten the history right -- Edward VIII's name WAS Edward -- David was the last of his names and the one the family used. So he did not in fact change his name to Edward it already was Edward.
I've often wondered how things might have been different for her on a psychological level if she had taken another name like her father and uncle before her did and kept her birth name to herself. Perhaps she would have been happier somehow, having another persona as Queen Victoria II while remaining Elizabeth behind closed doors. Still, either way, she had a formidable reputation to live up to considering the legacy of the first Queen Elizabeth. Perhaps she decided to keep her own name because in a way it gave her much needed strength throughout what was often a turbulent reign (at least in the family dynamics but there were also political goings-on as well). May she rest well until All Things End...
I’m sure this conversation was had in different light… And far before the passing of King George, however, there was a moment when she was first addressed as Queen Elizabeth, and it’s interesting to see that played out.
In the UK at least, most royal people have multiple names in their birthname; whatever name is chosen as a reginal name may or may not be that which one went by prior to coronation. Both Edward VIII and George VI each had at least four names, from which they were respectively known as David and Bertie in their youth. Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, meanwhile, had a simpler choice for her reginal name. Now her issue, Charles Philip Arthur George, will be known as King Charles III. God bless both him and his belated mother, the longest serving English monarch.
Regnal not Reginal. King Edward VIII had seven Christian names: Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, the last four names being the patron saints of the four nations of the United Kingdom. David was only used by his own family and his wife.
From 00:55 was for the benefit of overseas viewers. Princess Elizabeth will have known full well about regnal names and wouldn't have needed her father's and uncle's name changes explained to her.
Her uncle did not change his name. His first name was Edward. He was simply known only by close family by his seventh name David. Edward VIII was christened Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David.
Elizabeth knew she would be queen someday for many, many years. It stretches credulity to the breaking point to pretend that she hadn't thought of her regnal name by the time her father died.
She was presumably named after her mother, however, it made complete sense to not only keep it , but to also have the same name as one of England’s other greatest Queens. She was of course Queen Elizabeth I in Scotland 🏴
Of course, Elizabeth would have been extremely aware of what a regnal name is and would have already given it thought. She wouldn't have had it explained to her. The explanation here is for the audience.
I hope you are right. Here in Hungary, I just read the news her doctors put her under medical supervision, in fear of her health, and that the Prince of Wales, his wife and the Duke of Cambridge are on their way to Balmoral.

True and she would not need to be told what her uncle and father s names were .
She was in shock and grieving and fairly young. Her reaction isn’t out of the ordinary, Queen or not
Especially since she was born during the reign of her grandfather, she saw her uncle become king and her father afterwards, the question undoubtedly arose for her at some point.
They just did that for the show to explain to us Americans how it works
Who else is here after the queen's death ?
Martin: “Long live Queen Elizabeth”
Elizabeth: “Understood”
Great scene, but honestly I can‘t imagine someone first in line to the throne has never heard about reginal names or thought about what theirs would be.
I wish they's gotten the history right -- Edward VIII's name WAS Edward -- David was the last of his names and the one the family used. So he did not in fact change his name to Edward it already was Edward.
Long live Queen Elizabeth indeed, as she went on to reign longer than any previous British monarch. Her reign only ending just last year.
Him: "Long live Queen Elizabeth!"
Elizabeth: and I took that seriously
R.I.P Queen Elizabeth...
Now, when I hear, “Long live Queen Elizabeth,” in this scene, I think, "And she did!"
"Then, long live Queen Elizabeth"
And she did. May she rest in peace.
I’m sure this conversation was had in different light… And far before the passing of King George, however, there was a moment when she was first addressed as Queen Elizabeth, and it’s interesting to see that played out.
And she did. What an extraordinary life it was.
That she did for sure. And she will live on forever.
@Peter T It was for audience who didn't understand that. In another seen Churchill was reminding real surname of philip to Queen.
And she did.
Long did she reign over us!!! Long did she guide us!!!!! Now God Save The King!
Except her uncle did not change his name -- was was already Edward. David was the name the family used, the last of his full name.
Just remember too that the new Queen would be in shock at the death of her father and may not have taken everything in as well as she normally would.
And long did She live.
The jacobites don't agree
Of course, Elizabeth would have been extremely aware of what a regnal name is and would have already given it thought. She wouldn't have had it explained to her. The explanation here is for the audience.
I believe she will indeed be the world's longest living monarch far longer than anyone might expect.
I hope you are right. Here in Hungary, I just read the news her doctors put her under medical supervision, in fear of her health, and that the Prince of Wales, his wife and the Duke of Cambridge are on their way to Balmoral.
The queen has passed, long live the King
The late Queen is now reunited with the rest of her family members from the days of her youth. Rest well, Your Majesty.
Queen Elizabeth, second in her name. Huge shoes she had to fill then, naming after an almost legendary queen of England.
Not Martin explaining what regnal names are to someone who had been heir for 15 years to a king who changed his name
Long live the Queen. Sept 08 2022
