I used to admire Chorchil with passion for defeating Hitler. But after I saw the episode I learnt with the most horrible way possible that all the politicians, whether they are fascists or not that they are the same: twisted and self-centered. Oh and by the way... although your father was only a child in 1952 he was definitely a hero for surviving and making out O.K. You should have been proud of him! :)

Props to the effects department for not only recreating the 'pea souper' toxic smog for the outdoor scenes but also the indisputably smoky air for the interior hall Palace scenes which, as per the accounts, was somewhat accurate as building interiors are by no means sealed bell jars re outside air and it was reported rooms did seem a bit smoky (not unlike how dust storms at the peak of the Dust Bowl often made interiors dusty). It also needs to be mentioned that a large portion of the thousands of Londoners who died from choking on this smog were elderly folks who'd stayed in their own homes the entire time!
I'm not sure that the young Queen Elizabeth actually went through any appointment with her aged grandmother Queen Mary during that time but I CAN imagine that if she had that she WOULD have utilized any needed escorts and lights to guide her as she walked the 200 yards from Buckingham Palace to Marlborough House.

Not her job, it was Churchill's job, she's a figurehead, He was the true leader, and he said on 10 Downing Street, 'it's just Fog, if there's too much sun, it'll be called a drought, if we have too much rain, it'll be called deluge, it's an act of god, and I can't do anything about it.' Churchill handled the fog poorly, Elizabeth had no real power unless the situation is dire that she can request that the old man resign to make way for a new PM.

glaring problem in the opening 15 seconds..... none of them would have opened their own curtains. I like the show, but they take so many fictional liberties, that one would think with the finer details they could err on the side of realism.

It basically reads as follows: The smog descends on London, major characters dither but ultimately don't do anything at all, and four years later, actual legislation is passed to address the issue but it has nothing to do with these characters. As it is, “Act of God” is an episode about people making the choice to do NOTHING.
To its credit, the episode dramatizes the difficulty of doing nothing fairly well. Elizabeth’s meeting with Queen Mary feels like a thesis on the entire project of modern monarchy.
