What makes Brann Dailor such an incredible musician is the fact that he can make his drums sound like an entire band in and of themselves. Not to mention, his vocals are extremely underrated. I really wish Bill still did vocals, though. Even if they’re just backing screams like before. A band whose members all contribute vocally really is something to behold. Each vocalist gives the band a different identity, and to hear them mesh/meld together so well truly is mind-boggling

That outro is ridiculous. This entire song sounds like a Remission track but with modern-era Mastodon vocals. Hopefully there will be more of this on the next album.
It sounds like an EoS track that's as heavy as Remission/Leviathan and I really like it. I hope the new album is similar.
They did their own thing for a while and it was all pretty good..but this is the kind of Mastodon I have been waiting for.

Yeah, I liked a lot of the heaviness in remission but the "always screaming" vocals kind of turned me off a bit from them. Also, their prog-rock feel wasn't quite as matured as it's grown to become, but I absolutely agree that it seems like it's a blend of old and new. I'm def. excited to see what the next album brings!

First listen: I always love Mastodon, this song isn't one of their best ever. Second listen: Don't listen to that first guy, he's a diddler and was drunk.
Honestly for me this is a really good Mastodon song. Not top 10 or anything but still a damn good song. Only wish the production was a bit better.

Emperor of Sand... shit i rate The Hunter as being better and that's saying something. just my opinion of course and i do appreciate them trying different things, but mastodon can be random af sometimes.

In my opinion, this song is a perfect culmination of all the previous albums. the grunge from things like remission, leviathan and call of the mastodon, the clean choruses from oblivion and the hunter, the vague narrative from Emporer of sand and once more round the sun, and the changing tempo of blood mountain. truly a full collaboration of previous musical knowledge and experience, good job mastodon!

M Since grunge derived from sludge , i think it’s safe to say that yes there is a bit of grunge in mastodon.Probably comes from the Alice in chains inspiration since they are the band that built that bridge between the term grunge and sludge. Just my opinion man 😎

This song not being released just goes to show how quality of a band Mastodon is. If THIS couldn't make it on an album, imagine what else has missed the cut. This band's cut material is better than 99% of the garbage out right now

Is it "Shut out the lie in his eyes" or "Shut out the light in his eyes?" I also agree with emeric that it may be "Find" not "Dry" but it's hard to tell

For anyone else that's wondering about the new album, Medium Rarities is a compilation of songs, and it looks like this is the only new song on it.
Now, I know they said they were working on a proper new album, so I guess this will be released in the meantime since everything got delayed because of the virus.
Cattle Decapitation released an album of the same title.

This band was an acquired taste for me. Didn't like them much on my first listens but everytime I listened they burrowed into my head a little deeper to the point they became my favourite artists ever as soon as I heard Toes to Toes.
They just keep getting better and better.

oh well better late than never. Emperor of Sand is one of my favorite metal albums ever, that one was just perfect for me. still listen to it often.
Toe to Toes reignited my love for them. Was a huge Leviathan/ Blood Mountain fan and didn't bother to listen to anything until that was dropped. Have been bingeing the whole discography for months now haha. So happy to see this song pop up.
Exactly the same happened to me. I saw them live here in Greece about 10 years ago with Iron Maiden Slipknot and gojira and they were the weakest act in my opinion. And then one day toes to toes appeared in my recommended songs list. Right now Mastodon is one of my favorite bands.
I had the same experience with Gojira.

I saw them with my kids in Alabama USA a few years back (we even watched the show with Brent's mom of all people and I filmed Brent proposing to his girlfriend on stage - that's on TH-cam) and my kids agreed that they were not the greatest band we've seen live but that they were a lot of fun.

Mastodon has never released a bad piece of music. Whether you like the way theyve evolved or not is irrelevant. They make music they believe in.. Are incredible human beings..and are probably still one of the most original bands known to man even though they have gotten less heavy over the years.
