He had a very wide range, but I considered him as a tenor, first and he could sing like a counter-tenor, as he proved it on the incredible B-side "Exercises in Free Love", that became "Ensueno" on Barcelona, with lyrics by Mrs Caballé. I liked a lot Montserrat Caballé, actually I knew her before the album with Freddie, she was so famous. And I knew Queen before Montserrat Caballé, i think... I saw her live once, in a recital in Paris. So when they did this album together, it was heaven for me. I still wish it had been a tad different (it would have been better with a real orchestra but this has been done now) and a little bit longer with maybe a classical music adaptation but it's still a very good album. As for the translation, maybe there's one or two mistakes in the English translation I couldn't figure out but thanks to some comments, I understood... AIDS instead of "eight"... nevermind, as a whole, it's nice you did this.
He had a tenor voice, maybe she meant to have him do a baritone duet with her because I don't think he would be able to do a tenor duet in an opera style. There is really nothing I can hear in Freddy's voice that sounds like a baritone. Also sometimes great singers are bad teachers.
Thirty years ago I worked for an international acadic exchange NGO at a major state university which was hosting about a dozen Soviet university professors. I became close to one through our love of classical music and opera. One day I offered to bring to work an assortment of my vinyl records for him to transcribe to tape. He told me how hard it was for them to get much in the way of Western recordings. As he sat in my office humming with anticipation he clasp one to his chest and tears came to his eyes. Oh, I love Zarzella! Monserrat Cabal! And this Monserrat and Placido Domingo Sings Zarzuela. After he went home we corresponded for some time and he told me how difficult things had gotten and about not being paid for months, but of the pleasure of my music and the wonderful warm reception from the Americans.
It's really interesting she says she wanted him to sing baritone bc I just read about a study on his voice that indicates he was probably actually a baritone. I really wish he would've agreed. It's crazy to think of how good he is singing OUTSIDE his natural register. What would he have sounded like in it?!
That doesn't seem right to me. He casually sang Bb4's in a number of songs with no real training. Seems reasonable to conclude he had a tenor voice. How was this study you refer to conducted exactly?
Freddy is definitely not an operatic baritone which you can hear from his timbre, the lower notes and where the voice enters the passagio. In some people it is more difficult to make the distinction but not Freddy Mercury.

Thirty years ago I worked for an international acadic exchange NGO at a major state university which was hosting about a dozen Soviet university professors. I became close to one through our love of classical music and opera. One day I offered to bring to work an assortment of my vinyl records for him to transcribe to tape. He told me how hard it was for them to get much in the way of Western recordings. As he sat in my office humming with anticipation he clasp one to his chest and tears came to his eyes. Oh, I love Zarzella! Monserrat Cabal! And this Monserrat and Placido Domingo Sings Zarzuela. After he went home we corresponded for some time and he told me how difficult things had gotten and about not being paid for months, but of the pleasure of my music and the wonderful warm reception from the Americans.

It's really interesting she says she wanted him to sing baritone bc I just read about a study on his voice that indicates he was probably actually a baritone. I really wish he would've agreed. It's crazy to think of how good he is singing OUTSIDE his natural register. What would he have sounded like in it?!
That doesn't seem right to me. He casually sang Bb4's in a number of songs with no real training. Seems reasonable to conclude he had a tenor voice. How was this study you refer to conducted exactly?
Freddy is definitely not an operatic baritone which you can hear from his timbre, the lower notes and where the voice enters the passagio. In some people it is more difficult to make the distinction but not Freddy Mercury.
@@susandrakenviller3683 I just thought I'd share bc I thought it was interesting I happened to have read something a day or two before. I don't claim to have anything beyond very basic musical knowledge, but I still think it would've been cool to hear, even if only bc Montserrat Caballe thought it would've made for a good show.
Freddie Mercury was definitely a tenor, not a baritone.
As I said in other posts, the way Freddy was looking št her tells us all.
