  • Mike van Erp, known as CyclingMikey, is a camera cyclist who films motorists behaving badly and reports them to the police. He rides around London with a GoPro recording punishable acts such as mobile phone use while driving. He has reported more than 1,400 motorists to the police, leading to at least 1,800 penalty points being given to drivers.

Mikey does an incredible job and I can't understand why the MET Police don't create a team of cyclists that do this kind of work. It would require minimal expense and the word would soon spread around the UK that if you use you phone whilst driving, you will get caught.

Nick is wrong. The more using the phone becomes a habit , sitting at lights or otherwise it leads to another thing to do whilst in the car. So many times drivers are so engrossed with their phones gaps open up not realizing lights have changed colour and when they start off driving it’s with a lurch and more speed not checking if anything is nearby to their car. A mandatory £1000 fine for a first offense and a £2000 fine and a 6month ban for a second etc. look at the videos of horrific accidents of people using their phones while driving.

The only issue I have with CM is his engagement after the act has been captured. This causes people to become irate and arguably puts them at more risk of having an accident, as their mind is elsewhere. Film the act and move on discretely. The offenders will get their FPNs in the post. Stopping people and obstructing roads is unnecessarily inflammatory.

I drive a car, motorbike, I cycle, run and walk. Car drivers are always an easy target. Why stop at cars what about cyclists, e bikes, e scooters and the like who disregard the rules too, talk on their phones, ride on pavements instead of cycle lanes etc etc. Unfortunately we are turning into a police state like the former East Germany where neighbours report neighbours, does it give one a buzz that we can use the law to get others fined etc? I personally don't wish to live in a police state but I guess that is where we are heading.

    • @tyren818

it's not really some rocket science to understand why. It's because drivers have the biggest potential to cause harm to others on the road. Cyclists, ebike, escooters don't. It's just really that simple. BUt you can believe in conspiracy theories rather being reasonable.

A few weeks ago, if I had not been very close to my 99 year old uncle, he would have been knocked over on the pavement by an e-scooter. I find this unacceptable, the rider did not even stop to see if my uncle was ok. I cycle too . I stop at the lights I obey the rules of the road. I do however see far too many cyclists who just don't care for the rules of the road. Well I think to be fair, I like Mikey is doing to a certain degree, but at some point he’s going to have to make some major changes in the near future if he wants certain things to go his way. He’s made a ton of enemies over the years as well as fans, and I do predict that if he doesn’t limit or moderate his reporting text-drivers or pseudo-policing them for their driving errors, he could have a lunatic, a nut or a maniac after him for all the Good Samaritan work he did earlier. Maybe a pack, a herd, or a gang of them, and once he/they get a hold of Mikey or have him right where they want him, he may have a bigger problem than the one he’s trying to solve.
Some of the things that could happen to him may include:
    A. Being tracked down, stalked, kidnapped clubbed in the head if he’s not wearing a helmet, beaten up or assaulted, stabbed, and shot and possibly murdered by bad guys.
    B. He could have his house broken into and have his computer and his electrical devices hacked if he doesn’t have a guard dog or proper security, as well as have is video camera and bicycle destroyed.
    C. Be very vulnerable to receiving death threats via email, social media, and answering machine on his phone.
    D. The bad guys could go after his wife and children if he has either or both, and could rob Mikey at gun point of the royalties he has earned for his TH-cam clips.
The worst part about this is that the cops aren’t always going to be there in Mikey’s defence when they would be needed, and there will be times that no one will have his back, and Mikey might have take on these bad guys by himself.
    So what should Mikey do?
Here’s a list of things he should do to prevent this from happening.
    A. Pursue a career as a police officer, traffic warden, or run for office.
    B. Take advance level self defence courses, or seek counselling or therapy (which he could benefit from, as he has traumatically experienced the loss his father to a drunk driver at the age of 19, and hasn’t passed the grieving stage yet) before his paranoia, and the issues he has with text/drunk drivers, road crimes, and illegal driving get the better of him, and before one of the bad guys or law breakers whom he confronts reaches for his pistol or a crowbar.
    C. Move to a more rural area and carry a weapon, since the cities are overpopulated, and always have a lot of violence and crime, and the lawbreakers are armed and dangerous, that way he can have more space to cycle around without worrying about cars and trucks running over him or other people, and plus it gives him a better chance to stand up for himself if he has to get into a gun fight or if the bad guy had a baseball bat or a knife or something, and had to take on a bunch of gangsters.
    D. Not cycle alone. Mikey should be accompanied by at least two or more other cyclists for protection to prevent him from being seriously hurt, killed, or threatened by a gang of more than two people. Plus, his companions could act as witnesses.
    E. Maintain a low profile, do not brag and boast about the number of crimes he has reported, as well as the number of people he caught and made pay for their mistakes. Keep the bulk of his reports and his cases private. And not post so much on social media. Mikey should also limit the number of videos he posts about the people he caught, and only show them for “educational” purposes and should only use celebrities, political figures, and sports jocks. As for the lesser known people, he should keep his case reports between himself, the culprit, the lawyers, the judge and the jury. In other words: what goes on in Vegas stays in Vegas.
    F. Put bars on his windows, and frequently change and put extra locks on his doors, so the bad guys can’t break into his house.
    G. Frequently change his appearance. Mikey needs to frequently experiment with different wigs, and grow and shave beards and mustaches into different styles, and wear different disguises, as well as go through periods of weight gain and weight loss, so he could continue his mission without being recognized. He has a target on his back and the bad guys or the individuals plotting his demise are paying very close attention to the details on his appearance and are sizing him up.
    H. Make out his will.
    I. Put 9-1-1 on his speed dial, but do not always use it, as the police are not always reliable, and will get tired of him. He should use it as a last resort.
    J. Have his garage cluttered with bicycles. All of them different makes, and models, colors, with different options on them, so he can always have a bike to ride around in even if the bike he normally uses is broken or destroyed. Plus the he should use different bicycles on different days so that the bad guys won’t be able to identify him from the bicycle he rides.
    K. Hoard a lot of camera gear and have backup in a private case in the back of his trunk in every bicycle he owns/rides, and whatever he can’t fit in, locked up in a vault, in case the bad guys destroy his main camera gear in a hurry. He may have a go-pro camera that is which is a back facing camera that is mounted on the tail end of his bicycle, and does have additional filming equipment that he chooses to keep private, because if something really bad happens with the driver, and he gets assaulted, then that's his safety camera and that one streams to his storage or his server back at home, so that even if they so that even if they destroy all of his cameras, they will not get away with it. However; Mikey is not out of the woods yet. He would have to buy more additional filming equipment, and get more go-pros and lock the ones he has that are protecting him in a vault, because not only will the bad guys destroy it or try to figure out a way of doing so, they are also doing research, and studying everything about him, including where he gets his filming gear, what make/model he uses, and are gathering as much information about him and his gear as possible. Plus, Mikey also better hope that Donald Trump doesn't become American President in 2024, because if he does, then it could mean dictatorship for the U.S.A. and that could lead to all the other countries having their own "dictatorships". Mikey better hope his country be it the U.K. or Zimbabwe or wherever he is doesn't end up under a dictatorship, because if it does, and the "dictator" doesn't like him, he could have "all" of his camera gear, videotapes, computers, and electrical devices including his safety cameras expropriated from his home, and he could lose everything. He could also end up being executed, or suffer a series of violent indignities as well.
    L. With all of that happening, Mikey cannot afford to go anywhere or move about without looking behind himself, whether he is wearing his private/safety gear, and riding his bicycle or not. A bad guy could still be stalking him, and trying to find out where he hangs out, where he lives, and works, and could be gathering as much information about him as he can get. The bad guy could be going everywhere Mikey goes, and finding out where to find him. When Mikey realizes this, he could be very uncomfortable, even in the privacy of his own home. The bad guy could be creeping up behind him, and he could have a knife, a gun or god knows what, and Mikey may not realize it unless he has a mirror in front of him. Mikey must also step out of his comfort zone and explore new territory, and expand his interests and activities, so that he could hang out in other places without worrying about what the bad guy catching up to or sneaking up on him, and watch his back and look both ways to make sure he's around safe and nice people, and a clear environment.
My advice to Mikey is “enjoy your moment of tracking down and disqualifying unfit or texting drivers, but be prepared to pay a price for it (that isn’t money)”. I’m not writing this to create ill will or because I like to see suspense occur in a good person’s life. I feel that it doesn’t always pay to be a Good Samaritan as it sometimes get you into trouble and create a lot more grief than you already have. People are always going to make fatal mistakes, and do stupid things, and make bad decisions, especially if they are uneducated or the don’t care. There are always going to be assholes and idiots on the road, and sharing the streets with you whether you drive a vehicle, ride a motorcycle or a regular bicycle, walk, run/jog, roller skate, or skateboard, take the bus, a taxi cab, or subway, ride a horse and carriage, and sometimes there’s nothing you can do about it no matter how much it offends or upsets you, and no matter how hard you try. There are moments when you’re going to have to live and let live, even if you are right and they’re wrong, because if you get on their bad side, and you mess with the wrong person, it can turn you into an incapacitated, losing victim, and make your life a living hell. After all the road to the dark side is paved with good intentions. If you don’t think you could hold your own in a gunfight or a fistfight, it would be best to back off and leave these text drivers and law breakers to the professionals. What I am writing doesn’t just apply to Mikey, it also applies to other cam-cyclists, as well as other people who have the same problems or issues. What Mikey is doing is not safe, and he’s putting himself in a lot of jeopardy. I’m not saying that Mikey should totally stop doing what he’s doing. I think it’s helping people think, and reducing the dangers to some certain extent. Yes I think text-drivers, and people with driving problems deserve to be punished or corrected for not seeing the error of their ways, I’m just saying that he should pick his spots and know his limits very wisely, ration himself, but prepare for the dangers.

In addition to what I have written, I think Mikey should also pursue a career as a driving instructor/inspector, and because Mikey's issues are outdoors when he is riding his bicycle, he should spend a little less time cycling, and riding the bus or subway to work every 5 business days, and spend a little more time indoors. He should also sit in an aisle seat every time he rides the bus or a subway, because he'll freak out over the cars on the street if he gets a window seat, especially if he catches the odd duck using his cellphone when he shouldn't be.

@@dubreg6711 Mum on her shopping bike tends not to do 70mph descents down the Alps in the middle of a Peleton. They're not useful for low speed crashed because the head is not the part of the body most people fall on during them. They've done the science on it, e.g. helmeted cyclists suffer 14% more collisions per mile travelled than non-wearers; and helmets increase the risk of neck injuries.
In a Californian study, the prevalence of significant head trauma was 35% in the group of patients with helmet and 34% in the group without helmets, all significant trauma was 26% in the group of patients with helmet and 20% in the group without helmets, overall mortality was 1%. There was no difference in mortality between helmeted and non-helmeted patients.
Therefore all they are guaranteed to do is
      a) Put people off cycling (fact).
      b) Spoil people's hardos (also fact).

The online reporting system is nationwide and not specific to London. The actions taken on the reports do seem to vary from police force to police force though.
