Clough - The Brian Clough Story (2009)

  • 2009 marks the 30th anniversary of Nottingham Forest’s first European Cup triumph, masterminded by Brian Clough. A provincial football club broke and slipping towards Football League Division Three when he took charge, had conquered England and Europe inside three years. He achieved many great things with the clubs he managed, most notably Derby County and Nottingham Forest which would be considered impossible and unthinkable now. Clough would probably disagree but he was more than just a football manager.

Every one sings of the Ferguson's and Mourinhos, but this man (and Peter Taylor) took two second tier sides Derby County, and Nottingham forest to promotion to the top tier then the title of the top tier in successive seasons. Nottingham Forest then won the equivalent of the champions league two seasons on a trot. He didn't have the resources of a Manchester United or a Chelsea. What happened is literally unparalleled. A sad man, over opioniated, but in my opinion the best football manager of all time.

Sir Alex took an average Aberdeen and broke the old firm and won the league 3 times. Won the Cup winners Cup by beating Real Madrid.
He then took an ailing, mid table Man Utd, promoted youth players and made them world beaters. Sir Alex is as great as people say.

And he knows, like all the Leeds players of that time, that it would have been Leeds United lifting the European Cup under Brian Clough and likely more than one championship. My dad, a life long Leeds fan, football referee of some note, personal friend of Billy Bremner, Eddie Gray and Peter Lorimer, despite the issues at the club and his loyalty to the players, was utterly heartbroken when Clough left Leeds... I remember him talking to me about it, I was 10 years old, "that is the worst decision the club have ever made son, we've just let the best manager in the world walk away from our team". And he was right. RIP Brian. Respect.

Now anyone with some money spare can watch from anywhere in the world. I never liked Clough but back in the seventies at Leyton Orient we had a centre forward called Ian Bowyer who had absolutely no self discipline. @@AH-be6bu I never knew Mackay managed Forest. In something of a twist, it was Clough leaving Derby that paved the way for Mackay to go to Derby in '73 and win the title in 1975, to back up Clough's 1972 title win. And then Clough obviously had the run at Forest from 75 onwards. One of those situations where both clubs and managers did OK from the swap....although Forest did far better in the long run

Brian Cough was a total hero of mine - I always wished he'd come to manage Arsenal! I would say this to the Clough family, the film version 'The Damned United' is a brilliant testament to the great man. It shows him in a really affectionate light and anyone watching the film could only come away with a real liking for his abilities and attitude. I think given what has happened this week with Allardyce that film is a refreshing and more honest look at football. Clough was easily the best manager England never had - it is a travesty on the FA they never picked him. Shame on those people - not that they seem to learn from their constant poor choices of England manager.

Liverpool fan here. I'd personally rate Clough as the best English soccer manager of modern times. Above any Liverpool manger and even Alex Ferguson. There is a sense that what Clough achieved boiled down even more than any other team's achievements to the manager himself. He made the clubs he managed successful and put Forrest on the national and then international stage front and center. He almost 'invented' Forrest and as Alan Hansen said from playing against them in every possible competition, "They were a real team in every sense of the word." He didn't win as much as some manager, but you knew what he did win as due to the 'Clough' approach and his partnership with Taylor.

I feel so privileged and and proud that i was there to see forest get promoted from Division one and then go on and create something that will never ever be repeated , when i bump to old friends we talk about the trips to wembley and across europe , it was like being on roller coaster ride , the thrill of it the excitement of this journey we were on , i had 2 paper rounds and a part time job at a working men's club to pay to follow Clough's Forest , i still have all my tickets from the game's , programmes , photo paper cuttings ... and when my time comes to depart this world they will go with me .. Thank you brian and peter and the forest player;s for bring such a special time to my life that could never beaten and always in my thoughts . Trentender N.F.F.C

As a Stockport County fan, one of the real highlights during my time watching County was when we got to play Forest over two legs in the League (Coca-Cola) Cup back in 1992 and seeing Brian Clough in the dugout at Edgeley Park. Outside of Stockport County, I don't have many heroes in sport, but out of the non-County ones that I do have, he stands out on his own by some distance. Football and indeed the world in general just isn't the same without him and he is still very sorely missed. Continue to RIP, Mr Clough.

Never really been a football fan at all, only in my schooldays, but Brian Clough's career, docu and film was mesmerising. A giant personality with immense vision. R.I.P. Brian and the narrator of this the wonderful docu, Pete Postlethwaite

+ David McLeod imagine what Cloughie could have done at Villa. Probably have 3 European cups in the bag.
