@mipmipmipmipmiphey there! Popping in in case you don’t get an answer 😂 - something wide”ish” and fast lets you be more intentional in areas where “range” won’t. Cleaner low light, more bokeh, etc.

100%. The internet has zombified noob videographers into believing that they NEED f/0.95 or faster primes, and that zooms are incapable of usable image acquisition. If you’re a new videographer, listen to this video, buy this lens and save money and tears.

This was the first lens that I purchased for my S5ii (it came with the 20-60). I initially planned to use it to film my children’s sport activities and I absolutely fell in love with it. Yes, my primes are much smaller and lighter, but this covers all of my focal lengths in one lens. Video quality is amazing. Photo quality is amazing. Build quality is amazing. Thank you for another great video!

The 24-105 is like a minivan. It's not sexy, the cool kids will make fun of you, but goddamn, you can get shit DONE with it. Roadtrip with 6 friends, go get a yard of mulch, haul lumber, move your furniture, haul bikes, sleep in it, easy in and out, decent gas mileage, still easy to park. The 24-105 covers all your major focal lengths, even better stabe with the OIS working with the IBIS, plenty of separation/SDOF at f4 as long as you're not a bokeh junkie, great AF performance, not huge or super heavy, affordable, plenty sharp. If you've got all day to get some fartsy slo-mo shots of your girlfriend in a field, sure, bring the fast primes. If you're paying your bills with your camera and you need to get your shots and move on, this is what you need.

It’s my go to lens and lives on my S5II. FYI…Apsc/pixel modes in 4k gets you 158/163mm. Pixel/pixel in 1080 can get you 325mm. Making it a 24-325 if necessary.

@@tonymoreno2558 I’ve used it at several lowlight wedding receptions without issue…however it will depend on your cameras ISO noisefloor. My S5II handles higher ISO’s pretty well. You’ll also need to stay away from the crop modes mentioned above when you start boosting the ISO. The crop modes restrict light similar to a crop sensor camera. All that said…obviously you will have to maintain a balanced exposure more than with a 2.8 aperture zoom.
      Hope that helps.

    I have the s5iix.
I sold the 20-60 kit lens, and bought the 24-105, and the 35mm prime.
Very good lens, the lens ois + camera stab combination is incredibly stable for handheld shooting. Cons:
    1. The weight
    2. Stiff ring zoom, in my opinion.

Couldn't agree with you more about this lens. I have promoted this lens for 4 years now. Always been my favorite lens on my S1H. One thing that you didn't mention in review is that the 24-105mm is pretty much Parfocal. For your viewers that don't know what that is, if you zoom in and focus then zoom out, everything between 24mm & 105mm will be in focus. One of the pluses of good Cinema lenses and very rare in photo lenses. I wish Panasonic would make a 2.8 version of this lens like Canon just did. It truly is the best range

    • @alexanderdavidyuk5027
      @alexanderdavidyuk5027 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

This lens doesn't have true parfocal design. It compensates focus shift by motors. As do Canon, Nikon, Sony and others with their lenses.
You can check it making crash zoom, you will notice lag before lens finally refocused.
True parfocal lens would weights and cost few times more than this one.

    • @RobertJohnPhotography
      @RobertJohnPhotography 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@alexanderdavidyuk5027 I agree with you but I never said true Parfocal. I said pretty much. It's not exact but super close. This is the only Panasonic lens that they do it with. None of their other so called Pro zooms are close. I wonder why they don't do focus shift with those lenses. Didn't know Canon and Nikon were doing that. I was endorsed by Canon through out the 1990's and none of the zooms were even close to Parfocal. Interesting, never thought about doing a crash zoom to test it out. Good advice.

It’s a nice lens for sure but I wouldn’t exactly recommend it for BMCC 6K.
Firstly some examples of this lens create a banding interference mounted on BMCC 6K (same as some 16-35 S Pro). It’s widely documented issue and B&H photo has a warning on the product page of 6KFF to warn of it.
The focus by wire is absolutely unusable on BMCC 6K. If you try to do a small adjustment and turn the focus ring slowly, this doesn’t get registered at all. Focus won’t budge until you move it faster but than you are almost guaranteed to overshoot.
It vignettes quite badly on the BMCC6K. Especially in full frame mode.
Like others have mentioned ruined you can’t mix OIS with gyro. It won’t work.
I like your reviews but this one feels a bit rushed and incomplete

  • @AdamSzarmack

It might technically be a $600 lens or whatever but in Australia you can buy them for about $300 AU and probably less if you're patient... plus my kit was no extra to get it, so it was literally free... and it's just a really really good lens.

I have to say that Ive always been a prime lens shooter. wether gh5 or s5.
on gh5 i have mighty 18-35 1.8 ( best all around lens in the world of video for consumers)
And on s5 i have my sigma 50 1.4 + 85 1.8 ( panasonic ) +35 1.4 sigma art . And there is a really difference , but lately ive been following an olympic athlete on court with him . and I wanted to pick up a zoom for s5, naturally i wanted the 24-70 art from sigma.
and then i sawn there was 28-70 from sigma ( 400 euros cheaper since I bought it used ) . I have to say best buy in a while . I travel lightly even my gimbal is really small and wouldnt have been able to handle the 24-70 instead of the 28 - 70.
    Lighter/smaller , ive shot 90% of the time .

I got it because i wanted a one lens setup for travel and this thing handles it all. Like you said, the dual IS with this lens is bananas. 105mm with e-stabe and it looks like a tripod shot and that's a guy with a familial tremor. It's like the hilux of lenses. The only thing that bothers me about this lens is the considerable distortion when shooting raw photos. It's very noticeable, and worse that the Sigma 24-105 for DSLR's. The Panasonic's lens correction data is built into the raw files, and if the raw processor can't access them, you have to manually correct every photo that shows distortion. There is no provision to load lens correction data into a processor because Panasonic do not provide it. Apart from this, it is an extremely useful and versatile lens.

But for low budget shoots it's ok and stabilization is good.
As I remember, this lens is the only one native 24-105 zoom for L-mount, so no choice anyway.

The 24-70 F2.8 is not stabilized, it weighs 300g more and the zoom range is too limited to meet multiple needs, however it is more qualitative. Its place is rather in a studio. It therefore makes sense to recommend the 24-105 F4 if you only have to have one lens, you will gain a lot in run and gun and in video (focal length, stabilization, weight), it also allows very close shots, and you can also use it in the studio without blushing, the shots are completely correct even if they have a little less sharpness than the 24-70. The 24-70 F2.8 is not very versatile, this should be a second purchase unless you only do studio.

I looked at pdf's for the current manuals for the S1, S1H, S5ii and S5iix. There are menu settings to enable diffraction and vignetting compensation. There's a statement that the camera does color compensation for .jpgs and not for raw, but I couldn't find anything related to what I think in this case is called "Pin-cushion" or "Barrel" distortioin. When you import a raw photo into lightroom, you can apply a lens profile to correct that kind of distortion, but I don't know how you do that for a video in premier. The author (Gary) did saw that it was an issue for raw video, but it might be applied automatically to all non-raw 4K images.

Not sure why you say the 24-105 isn't given proper attention. I'm sure it's the most popular L-mount lens above the kit lens and the 50mm f1.8
It's absolutely the most value for the money lens. I've used it for a few years and it does everything.

I think your videos are great. Direct and to the point. I'm enjoying working through the tutorial.
I wish more people used the S5II/x. I fell in love with the S5, and Lumix cameras altogether.
I only wish there focus peaking was better. The new Sony's are great with focus peaking, but that's not enough to make me switch.
I still love shooting MF whenever possible and using dead lenses. It's much more inventive and creative. @@OBP_

The lumix 24-105 is an L-mount lens and cannot work worth with Sony cameras. That being said, Sony has its own 24-105 f/4 which is also a better lens than is given credit for. I was lucky enough to work for the St. Lawrence string quartet during the year of the great lockdown (helping them livestream). And this video is shot with each camera using it's corresponding 24-105/f4: An S1,S1H, and A7s3. I'll bet you'll have a hard time guessing which is which: youTube.com/watch?v=4jMEjcFRjVw&t=752s
