By the time Dany was born, there was no one left alive who knew how to make a dragon saddle. But I think even if they could figure it out, she probably felt she didn’t need one.

She might have not even known they were saddled, also. She always admitted that her knowledge of her family history was lacking, and the little she did know she learned from her brother Viserys who just bullshitted most of the time.
I feel like there’s something rly cool and divine about her riding without a saddle, it makes her connection with drogon more natural? If that makes sense??? But I love that.

You're spot on in your assessment of Daemon. He is a very complex, very "grey" character. George R.R. Martin has said that he both one of the most loved and most hated men in Westeros. A great character and Matt Smith does a fabulous portrayal of the many facets of him.

In the books, the Baratheons were one of the strongest supporters for Rhaenys' claim to the throne at the Great Council due to her mother being a Baratheon. As a matter of fact, in the books Rhaenys has black hair due to Baratheon genes being the equivalent of a genetic stampede (the Seed is Strong anyone?). I kind of wish they kept it like that here, or at least have her have streaks of Black in the Silver, but I understand the need to make it clear she's a Targaryen visually.

Yes! Aemma Arryn is Viserys's cousin, Aemma's mother was Daella Targaryen who married Rodrick Arryn, Daella was one of the daughters of Jaehaerys and Alyssane, Viserys and Daemon's parents were Baelon and Alyssa were brothers and children of Jaehaerys and Alyssane.
Rhaenyra is 3/4 Targ because of her Arryn blood. Rhaenys is 1/2 Targ, 1/2 Baratheon, although the Baratheons are descended from Aegon's rumored bastard brother, so maybe that bumps her up to 2/3? Targ blood is the only dragon-riding blood left which is the reason for all the incest.

One important thing to remember about Daemon, Rhaenery and Viserys, no matter the appearances and motives, they really, deeply love each other, as family. Daemon loves Viserys, but he also has hobby of pissing his brother off and then winning him back.
I seen the show 5 times now and still seeing the beginning hearing the dragons still tears me up a bit like the first time… peoples reactions get me too 😅😂 im very emotional when im invested in these characters..

I started out this series also saying Rhaenyra would be my favourite character but there’s so many cool characters introduced and developed throughout the first season that I can’t choose anymore 😂 They’re all so great

Otto knew the king was extremely vulnerable right after the funeral. Alicent is not a suitable consort for a King (daughter of a second son) so his only chance was to slip her in when the King could be emotionally manipulated.

Interestingly enough, in the book, the succession came down to Viserys and Rhaenys’s son. Direct quote from the book: “In the eyes of many, the Great Council of 101 AC thereby established an iron precedent on matters of succession: regardless of seniority, the Iron Throne of Westeros could not pass to a woman, nor through a woman to her male descendants.”
It’s a subtle change making it between Viserys and Rhaenys herself but still noteworthy.
Also, technically, the title of Crown Prince had passed to Baelon when his brother died, and thence down to his eldest son, and if Jahaerys tried to retcon the succession by retro-disinheriting his son and grandson, the powder keg would have blown up in his face bc the succession of any house would be completely shredded.
The dark and handsome unknown common born Criston Cole, cutting a very Jon Snow-esque figure, unseats the Prince himself, then audaciously walks up to the princess to ask for her wreath, which she gladly indulges him, her best friend giggling beside her. Such an insignificant thing in the middle of all this tragic and impactful events : the king's wife and the heir's death, a new heir, a rogue prince. And yet...here it all begins.
It's a Good TV show, it improves after episode 5 with the drama and all... hehe you already know the characters and what is happening so it gets smoother. The show was so good and such a hit, they are making a season 2 :) So no worries.
Just an FYI, those people who Daemon punished with the Gold Cloaks were indeed criminals. The people of King's Landing called him (Daemon) Lord Flea Bottom whilst he called himself the Prince of the City because he spent so much time with them in the city and could pick out those of which were criminals and those who were not

Now it’s been like three years and it’s finally here and more perfect than ever! I won’t spoil anything but I have complete faith in Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik as well as the rest of the cast and crew going off how well they’ve developed the show so far! 🤩

One trivial remark: I just finished watching the Australian show "Upright" and at first I didn't recognize her, but it was Milly Alcock / Rhynaera (she is Australian!) who played one of the twon main characters. It was just before House of the Dragon came out and it's also a show well worth to watch.

Re: saddles. Dany was suppose to have one. The Show cut it. It was set up in book one and season one. Tyrion creating a saddle. Old Town also has details on dragon saddles. George Martin said she’d die without one. And show should have included it. She has not become full-on rider in the books yet. She’ll have a saddle. That’s why this was so cool. FINALLY Targaryen red and black clothing, ARMOR, and saddles and other true Targaryen stuff and thangs!

HOTD!! 18:08: I’m sure it’s a depiction of Old Valyria. The architecture looks very similar to Dragonstone. Maybe the Targaryens who landed there sculpted a keep that was an echo of their homeland.

The series opens with homage to her. Dany is the prince that was promised confirmed? 🤔 she did wake dragons from stone and was reborn from salt and smoke. Thats my queen forever, Yuh!

Well, her option was to be cut open in an attempt to save her baby, or die a slow, even more excruciating death. Her true loss of choice was her being impregnated yet again for a chance to produce an heir.

I liked the first episode too. I was so excited when I watched it. I'm so happy you're reacting to hotd. There are little differences between show and book but unlike game of thrones the book hotd is based on is unreliable because a maester wrote it. So it's up to the readers to guess where's the truth. Hotd is fun because it's like the showrunner's truth.

First I'm glad to see your reaction to this show. I haven't read the books but I'm familiar with the lore and by and large I liked many of the changes the show made from the source material. The casting was pretty much on point as well. I'm curious if by the end of the season whose side you'll be on.
Rhaenys mother was a baratheon. House velaryon which is one if the strongest houses of that period, house baratheon/the stormlands and the north supported her line to inherit the throne
but she still lost 20 to 1 against Viserys, the lords of the realm do not want a woman on the throne
@@andyrobin7196 actually that's not true. Yes she lost 20 to 1 but I don't think that it is only because she was a woman but also because viserys' father had previously been named heir.

Rhaenyra was supported by more lords than Aegon was. So the whole talk about how a women could never rule without having most of the country against her is not really true.
I don't think it's stupid to want more of and to enjoy what we have of characters speaking Valyrian. It works especially well when they speak it with a more natural intonation, instead of forced intonation (like how _so_ many characters in other franchises speak Latin, ugh!). Language and culture are two-sides of the same coin of human experience. So, it enriches the immersion and expands our own psychological horizons.

Alot of people ( men specifically as the head of their house 🙂) supported rhaenys as heir even more supported Rhaenyra as the Queen against Aegon. Rhaenyra had men dying for her claim while she sat in her castles.

In which, the benevolent king Viserys choses to torture his dying wife in cold blood like a guinea pig, instead of getting over the obsessiom of having a male heir and letting her pass naturally and less painfully. Viserys, like a true nobleman of his time, cared more to save his precious heir instead of his living, breathing wife. When Daemon was saying in the Vale men like sheep bc they’re prettier and Viserys own wife was from the Vale… Viserys was just letting this man say anything fr.

A lot of us missed this too, Viserys had to choose between saving the baby or letting it and the mother die as they were. Aemma was going to die no matter what. I think his grief is so heavy because of how she died.. he didn’t even explain to her. Glad you’re doing this show too!!
I think he mistakenly thought he could convince her that she would survive (and couldn't bring himself to tell her that she was doomed).

On top of that she is the love of his life. I wish we would have had her for a couple more episodes though.. but perhaps it was better we not get too attached. Lol

Honestly I liked this better than game of thrones because the two uncle and niece thing, they really actually loved eachother and that’s the best you can ask for when you have to marry blood. And Alice’s Dad is the knew/old little finger and he is disgusting. Also he is super hot, the same actor who played a doctor who!!! The hair and the attitude just makes him so gorgeous but yeah the scenes leading up to them being in love are heckins disgusting.
“The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion” this brings a lot more depth into the entire GoT universe. And between the bonding between a dragon and a rider.
It is said if you get cut by the throne you are unworthy… I would say naming Rhaenyra heir was the one decision that Viserys shouldn’t have done, even as kind of a king as he is- he didn’t consider the realm at all
I think the real problem is that Viserys never bother to change the law. He essentially said "Yes, this is the law but I want my daughter to be Queen so we are going to ignore that law just this one time." Did he *really* think that just his proclamation would be sufficient?? As a man Viserys was kind and honorable, but as a king he was short-sighted, indecisive, and...well..weak.
I forgot to say that Viserys was also very wise in many ways. The quote about controlling the dragons being an illusion is a perfect example. He understood what most did not - these are DRAGONS! They CHOOSE to follow the commands of men but at the end of the day they are DRAGONS and they will do whatever the hell they want. As Jorah told Daenerys in GoT season 3 or 4: "They are dragons, Khaleesi. They can never be tamed, not even by their mother."

Tbh most westerosi nobles do not really fear or frown upon the idea of women ruling, more that women inherit on the same basis as men. They are still very sexist of course, so a female ruler would have to be on their best behavior much more than any male ruler would have to avoid rumors and infamy.
But yhea Rhaenys had significant support, with the Velaryons and the Baratheons among some of them, Rhaenys is half Baratheon on her mothers side.
The people whom the gold cloak punished were real criminals.

I'm still a huge Game of Thrones fan (despite season 8 😐). I've already finished House of the Dragon and absolutely loved it. We'll have to wait until 2024 for season 2 😞
Also, I'm doing the same thing with The Last of Us. Once all the episodes are out, I'll binge watch the series.

They didn’t know where to cut the mother to not cut the baby, the often killed both or just didn’t know what was going on but acted like they did. they’d cut way to high and blame the woman for not being able to properly birth a baby so her family would lose a daughter, grandchild and their other daughters wouldn’t be able to be married off to easy.
So excited 🔥 🔥 if I saw Jon in the right in GoT, I had to also see the other side of this conflict as valid. It’s great

The Alicent-Rhaenyra "lost friendship" aspect IS the central driving force of Hotd. It's what provides the show with its emotion, angst & tragedy. Anyone who do not understand this is because they are a petulant Targ Cultist for whom scoring Sports Team dunks is more important than the beauty of the story. They get mad that hotd dares to have substance and nuance instead of being their self-inserf silver queen warlord cosplay/targsryen apology show. How dare the antagonists are themselves victims and made of sympathetic flesh and blood instead of being one dimensional cartoonish mustache twirling doormat villains with no characterization, arc of screentime. The average targ cultist wanted a snow white girlboss warlord vs 65 year old evil stepmom Disney movie. Hotd gave them a greej tragedy like sophocles instead. Well, I guess it's tough luck for them.

I'll be honest with you and I never in a million years thought I'd say this, and this isn't just because of season 8 of Game of Thrones.
I think house of the dragon is far BETTER than Game of Thrones. At least when comparing the 1st seasons of each. I'm fairly certain all 10 episodes of this 1st season made me cry at 1 point or another.

There are rumors that they will use this show to try to fix season 8 failure. Maybe we are looking at a rewritten ending for Game of Thrones.
What? This is a prequel to GOT continuity. There is nothing to fix, HOTD proves GOT was not ruined.

Although I like how GOT had different stories going on at the same time, it's nice to see them focus on one story. Honestly I had my reservations about this series, but my concerns quickly subsided. This was masterfully done with a great story, production, and a master class of actors giving awesome performances. I think you're really going to enjoy the rest of the season and I'm totally here for it. 🖤👍🤍
