Islam actually gives more rights to women than most if not all major religions. Here I will focus only the 3 Abrahamic religions. Islam is the first & only religion that assures women have the same right with men to enter paradise. As contrast in Christianity women aren't worthy of Kingdom of Heaven, pious law abiding women - even Mary mother of Jesus herself - should be first transformed into men, clones of Jesus to be exact, in order to enter as stated in Gospel of Thomas 114 & Philippians 3:20-21- this means there will be 0 female in christian heaven. Islam is the first & only one that give women rights to inheritance, property etc. Judaism & Christianity don't. Islam dont have barbaric laws such as Deut.22:13-18, Deut 25 11-12, 22:28-29 Revelation 2: 22-23 etc. Islam elevates women.

Technically speaking, you can’t burn the Quran. The Quran is the recitation, not the book itself. Aside from that, I believe you should be allowed to burn any book you wish, and on the opposite side you’re also allowed to be angry at the person that does it. Any holy book or political symbol can be burnt to express criticism because it doesn’t actually hurt anyone, just incites anger. The line is drawn at physical violence or threats of doing so.
It’s a political message against a political ideology (Islamism, ie political Islam).
Mind you, it’s a message made by an ex-Muslim, and an act of protest on his part. He was subject to death threats for his apostasy (Islam mandates that those who leave are to die), his life was threatened and to show them he’s not afraid, he did this. It was stupid, but brave. Wasn't worshipping Allah the whole point of your life for salvation in heaven and the quran is supposed to be your simple guidebook to achieving that? Show me one verse in the quran that explains the steps on how to pray compared to the amount of sex and marriage mentioned in there. It even says that your false prophet as a special rule only for him where he can sleep with any women (regardless if they are married or unmarried) who offer themselves to him. The only thing that could make that happen are our courts but they have been very much aainst that for obvious reasons. Freedom of speech absolutely means you can disrespect someone. Because its subjective. A vegan/vegetarian might be very offended by someone eating meat. Should eating meat be illegal then? Probably not. From the perspective of many people, when a holy book is burned... they just see some paper being burned while others get offended. But being offended is not a crime. He forbade her but she did not stop. He rebuked her but she did not give up her habit. One night SHE began to SLANDER MOHAMED and abuse him. So HE took a DAGGER, placed it ON HER BELLY, pressed it, AND KILLED HER. A CHILD WHO CAME BETWEEN HER LEGS WAS SMEARED WITH THE BLOOD THAT WAS THERE. When the morning came, MOHAMED was informed about it.

When I was a kid more than 50 years ago, we were encouraged to burn any paper found in the street with arabic letter including the wise Quran pages, it was like better burned than soiled as the Arabic letters are considered divine. We use to be encouraged as well to remove food found in the street (Like bread, dates etc) away from pedestrians path by kissing it and putting it close to where birds or other insects can find it.

@jessicaras4540 We can't take some verses of Qur'an partly, and to interpret it literally. Historically there were the reasons behind those verses that seem "controversial".
But also we have to read the whole book completely to understand.
The "controversial" verses/teachings not only found in Islam. For example in Hammurabi Law there were a law to throw a cheating woman into the Euphrates River with her lover; to cut off the thief's hand, etc.
Basically Bible and Torah teach also their adherents of goodness.
Yet there are some verses in them that also seem "controversial".
Like the teaching of "eye for an eye", or the teaching of other peoples are "goyim" (inferior), etc.
To be clear and fair there are also the verses in Qur'an about helping others, some are Al-A'raf: 56, Al-Isra’: 7, Al-A'raf: 56, Al-Maidah: 2.
Over 50 verses about charity.
Or at least 7 verses about doing good to parents.

Personally, before I reverted to Islam, I was trying to find a morality that made sense, societal morality if filled with contradictions and baseless dogmas which are literally human arbitrary fabrications...
At one point, I was into property rights-based morals, from that point of view, sure you can burn whatever is yours, and can also cut your pp or your arm, it's yours anyways and you don't harm others directly at all.
But that is, in my opinion, just following assumptions, first assumption is thinking your body is yours, you didn't create it, to begin with, and also, if the creator exists, following property rights, he's the only one who can legally make laws...
So if he makes a law, over his creation, his property, and someone just ignores it and does transgression, that person is perfectly fine to be punished, it's like if someone enters my house and they break stuff, they will gonna get kicked out... and it won't matter if they shout "I don't believe you own this", I do own it, so their opinion doesn't matter.
Anyways, God is even more just than our laws, because if someone doesn't know the laws, they still are punished if they break them, in Islam tho, as long as I understood it, you are not accountable for stuff you do without knowing, but also the point is that you do know innately certain stuff is wrong because before you come to Earth, you do know the terms and conditions, including the part where you do forget some stuff... that is part of the conditions.

So you see, the Quran is a clear book, only those who are liars decontextualize the verses and take out and mistranslate to make the religion look either bad morally or wrong...
I love you for the sake of Allah, and I expect you to benefit from this knowledge, we are entering harsh times, and we do need guidance it seems.
Also, some Muslim brothers, sadly aren't perfect, and if you see their actions, you may think Islam is that which it isn't.
But you also shall realize, in Islam there are prophecies, that near the end times, of Islam only the name will remain, meaning the teachings and moral codes will disappear, and only people who want power will lead people... does that mean the teachings of the Quran are evil? How can people who aren't following a clear text and its good inside make the text be bad?
To conclude, I'm a revert from Spain, and it has been a pleasure to write this comment, I know some people don't like Islam no matter what, but for me, if this benefits even a single person, that's enough for me.

They are the goal, and it's critical, because not everyone who isn't a Muslim is a kafir or bad people, a lot of them are just unaware of Islam, and part of them being open to Islam is what they see us doing.
We have to be firm, but also not harsh to everyone, look at hadiths about the character of Rasulullah saw, how did he respond to insults?
He did so in a beautiful way, the companions were furious but Muhammad saw wasn't (at least in the hadiths I have in mind, every emotion does have a place to be, don't get me wrong)
Then who do you follow? Muhammad saw or the companions?
I follow Muhammad saw, and then if I don't have an example, then I follow the companions because they learned...
But this is important brother, otherwise our heart is gonna get hardened and our relationship with Allah saw may get worse...

Reading a number of the comments, it seems there are many who can't seem to reconcile their personal feelings (about not wanting to offend or insult another) and the freedom of conscience and expression. You can personally choose NOT to insult another person or religion, but still believe in the freedom of another to do so.
As a Christian, and a what I consider to be an ethical person, I would never burn a Quran or any religion's holy book, HOWEVER, also as a Christian, and hopefully an ethical person, I do believe in freedom of conscience and, as long as the expression of your conscience doesn't infringe upon another's freedom, I believe in freedom of expression. If someone burns a Bible, I believe in the person's right to do so (as long as it wasn't my Bible). It doesn't matter if I'm offended. It's their right to do so. WE DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO NOT BE OFFENDED OR INSULTED. IF we limit other's freedom of the expression of their conscience (as long as it doesn't affect our freedom of conscience), then they could potentially limit MINE.

As a Polish person I am not into burning any books. For us, Poles a very bad memory comes to mind: Nazis and Soviets burned many of our books to show that they can get away with it. I don’t think it’s a good and beneficial in any way for our society. I believe in free speech but not in offending other people for no reason, even though I fundamentally disagree with their beliefs. I believe in dialogue and communication. A debate would be a far better idea. I have read many of books of Muslim scholars, such as Khomeini, who is the highest Shiah scholar and I can say that I strongly disagree with almost everything he said in them. I have read the Quran and I also disagree with following it blindly because it was written thousands years ago and many of the things there are metaphors, irrelevant in today’s world, just like I disagree with following the Bible blindly. We need to use our common sense and critical thinking rather than always follow without asking questions. If a book tells me to kill apostles, infidels when they refuse to convert, should I do it? If a book imposes jihad upon me, should I do it? If a book tells me to cover myself from head to toe which is repulsive to me, should I follow? The answer is no. We should follow state’s law, which is updated regularly rather than following a book which wasn’t updated for thousands of years. This is what freedom of expression is for me. We are intelligent enough to know what is good for us and for the society we live in and choose things to follow wisely.

What are these comment? "it's about tolerance and respect", you can only get so tolerant until it becomes weakness. The burning of it was an act of defiance that stood against oppressive backwards values and beliefs that are still going strongly today in the Muslim world. Most Muslims wanted that man's head on a stick for simply leaving Islam and he said "suck it I'm not bowing down to you, who has oppressed me and many others". If you don't support this you're either a dogmatic Muslim who cant think for themselves or another increasing weak European who doesn't do anything to uphold modern values (like treating women as equals and allowing gay people to literally just live their lives).
