I like my A2 because I'm weird. Boring, dumb, *normal* people won't like it. With my heavy foot and city traffic it's more like 5.5 to 6L/100km, something like 45 to 50mpg. Even if the fuel savings were as good as they look on paper, after 20 years it just always needs repairs that add up. While the body won't rust, some steel suspension parts do rust and can be a huge pain to replace. Electrical problems are common, I don't have interior lights and sometimes the boot lid won't open. Likely every A2 has a broken glove box light switch - the bulb remains lit as long as parking lights are on, it gets hot and burns a hole in the passenger air bag and eventually burns out. You can replace the bulb but it will soon fail again without fixing the lid switch. Until like 2002 the diesels had an additional Webasto heater. Expensive to repair so it's rare to have one in working condition. I did the repairs myself since the shop wanted as much as installing a new one costs. Some times the air conditioning might actually be fine but the air flap servo motor for controlling temperature could be dead, same with all the other air flap servo motors for directing air to different vents.
