First congratulations on the 200th episode. Oh man I could pick the brain of those two for hours and hours, such a wealth of information they must have. Cheers
My boating time (sail & motor vessels) was late 1970's to late 1980's. Compared to today, navigation equipment, safety gear, communication was minimal or non existent. I was even using charts that were from Capt James Cook - as these were the most up to date at that time in that region (still have those charts) So many sailors I met and we just got on with it. Today YT is filled with so called superyacht captains all claiming how great they are, and ebegging sailing channels that have no idea of how to navigate and handle boats - take away their toys and they they wouldnt be able to get anywhere. To all the real sailors (this includes you Thomas) my congrats and admiration.
Thank you so much for watching and for sharing your story as well. It doesn’t take much to set sail today, so I guess it’s the reason why so many feel confident even with limited experience in good and bad. Thankfully the reality are quite different from the impression YT brings to the screen. I share your experience using only paper charts and no GPS. The most advanced equipment was a radio tool to triangle radio beacons from light houses when approaching challenging waters in reduced visibility. Worked very well. I guess I belong on a museum talking about navigation pre GPS 😆 All the best ⛵️
@anthonycook1406 I do the same in some situations. We share the ideas about just take down all sails and surf away on the rig only if possible. But sometimes it’s better to ride it out pointing into the weather by engine. There is no blueprint as the conditions are never the same. Sometimes just wait it out, sometimes surf away, sometimes try to sail out of it. It really depends what’s waiting in the other end. However this is strategies when it’s from 60 kts and above. Not TH-cam storms but violent storms and cyclone force winds
Great job Thomas. I hope you keep in touch with them. It would be great to get an update on their status this time next year. Please let them know I enjoyed their interview. I hope to share a beer with you again.

I've found your channel recently and immediately became a subscriber. I've been watching your videos and appreciate the realistic approach and mindset you have. Lots of people believe they must have all gizmos and have a large fancy yacht to travel the world. It is like saying that you must have at least a fully equiped Bentley to go on a road trip. 🙂 Gizmos provide comfort but are also failure points. One truly interested in ocean crossing must invest in themselves (knowledge and experience) and ensure their yacht/boat is strong enough and have the safety equipment for the task it will be put through. Stay safe!
A great spontaneous interview with an amazing adventurous couple. I think before everyone heads off to Antarctica with their production yachts 😀it would be best to fully digest the years of sailing experience / skill and the fact that they state their reliance on modern weather forecasting and good preparation of their yacht. Watching other sailors such as Skip Novak and Kirsten Neuschäfer - Pelagic expedition yachts and Phil and Lynda Christieson on Windora you get a better sense of what you're up for at these high latitudes if you need to wait it out or get caught in a storm.

Bavaria was not satisfied with Lewmar anymore and have moved on with higher quality. Many high end brands are still with Lewmar.
Bavaria have also switched to Jefa for rudders and bearings etc. For lots of other out of the shelf products they use good quality products.
So I believe it comes down to brands, and maybe rumors originate from jealousy or competitors. Who knows.
If I could afford it I would buy a brand new C57 from same brand I’m sailing ⛵️
@@SailingwithThomas Thanks, good to know. The Aussie channel Travel Sketch detailed their problems with a factory new Leopard which is still on the hard getting repaired for over a year.
@Leo-vk6qm I believe the old good saying if you want a good boat with less trouble, buy a 2-3 years old one. Then the previous owner have taken the biggest loss and all child diseases are cured and you can go happy sailing. Still under warranty. That’s what I did buying BE FREE ⛵️
